Wow. I've been a massive Stereos fan since I first heard 'What Is Soul?' in '88, and I can't believe I've never heard Rob in conversation, and this has truly struck a cord with me. Thank you both.
Seen them twice at the glade at glasto, once with three female singers/dancers, mesmeric, and rob stalking the stage like a shaman, also at the fleece in Brizzle, 3 or 4 years ago still, hot and deep, musically so interestingly sonic, love them, great people.
Seeing this interview really let's me know just how old I am. The first time I ever heard/seen the stereo MC's was on a roller Derby halftime show back in 89, I think. Rob came out and lip syncd elevate my mind. It was an American show. I remember seeing young mc doing another halftime show, he came out and did bust a move. If anyone remembers that show, let me know Please, I've totally forgotten it.
Totally underrated lyricist I quoted him in one of my earliest songs back in 91. Elevate my mind is still a classic. But connected lyrics are deep. “Gotta get your self connected the writings on the wall coz if your minds neglected stumble you might fall”
I remember people used to diss them back in the day and I just didn't get it, not because I was friends with them, but I genuinely thought what they were doing was innovative and great and I could relate to the lyrics, so quite often ended up in argumentative debates about why I thought Stereo MCs were great. I think I managed to convert a few into their work but there was always going to be a few ignorant ones who just didn't want to hear that. Says more about them really...
Yeah gotta agree. Back then it was about the bass line and the melody, now I'm older, fcuk, the lyrics give matt Johnson a run for his money. Wisdom beyond there yrs back then, they've just had to wait for most others to catch up. Saw them at holmefirth last yr, by far the best gig I went to, and I went to some "big" do's. H&R Rob 😎👍
Been a massive fan since "what is soul" also in my brief time as a MC in dope inc, highlight supporting stereo mcs, great open n chilled guys, nice one Blade
“...On 33 I’m setting you free On 45 I’m coming alive On 78 suckers just can’t wait coz it’s live! and we ain’t no fake...” yeah man! Loved this band from time, big up Rob B n all the stereo crew!
It was actually On 33 that Robbie Williams rapped! I remember it was a Channel 4 documentary that was marking the (eventual) release of Deep Down and Dirty! I video'd it, maybe it's still somewhere in the attic!
I THINK YOU ARE FREAKING AMAZING ROB AND THE RESTA THE STEREO MCs , YOUR LYRICS ARE INSANE AND IM 58 I’m A FEMALE FUNK LEAD AND RYTHMN GUITARIST KNOWN AS “Spiritlevel “ I was at GLASTONBURY IN 93 RIGHT AT THE FRONT ON GUYS SHOULDERS ABSOLUTELY SMASHED , I WAS CAMPING WITH THE GREENPEACE CLAN AND IM ON THE FRONT OF THE GLASTONBURY 93 GREENPEACE LP GOING NUTS TO YOUR MUSIC I LOVE YOU I WAS AT THE WEDGEWOOD ROOMS PORTSMOUTH NOVEMBER 2023 I threw my cd at you ❤❤❤❤
Rob said he's rarely complimented for his lyrics but he should be really, because his songs often talk about how hard life is, and all that's not right in this world. I love this guy, he's remained true to himself and that's what the music industry needs now more than ever. Stereo Mc's were the soundtrack of my 20s, will always be their fan. Cheers to Blade the other Legend 😊
Im at a bus stop waiting on the 33, i can see for miles cos my mind is free. How relevant with todays masonics. Rob is a prophet weather he knows it or not. Get Connected 😊
Saw Stereo MCs open for Janes Addiction right after Deep Down & Dirty came out and they absolutely brought the house down. Such a powerful live show. Rob commanded the stage and the 3 ladies singing were one of the sexiest things I've ever seen on stage. Fucking brilliant
To be fair it's true that rob was a very under rated lyricist. Creation is the one that comes to mind, always thought they were superb lyrics. Elevate My Mind too.
Rob still looks just like he did in the early 90's but with a few more wrinkles 😃 such a humble guy who's love for music always shines through and inspires. I don't really believe in fate, but he definitely found his right path in life 🎶👊👌
I think it must be an amazing feeling to think that your music brings memory's back to people .at time when they were young and carefree..without worry and uncertainty.. before kids..before bills before old age...keep going for as long as possible..music is food for the soul
Music needs more people like Rob Birch
‘A model of travesty, you’re falling thru gravity
Ya try to get a grip, but you slip on your sanity’
Beautifully crafted.
I’m always a fan.

Fantastic group and amazing lyricist. Such a lovely man. Rob and Nick have produced some brilliant albums and are a great live act.
