I am 100% Congolese, I speak Swahili us my first language and Olso speak Lingala us a second official louange., Little bit of my mother’s dialect and my father ‘s dialect . On top of that I speak French, Kirundi, and I am learning English too .

Swahili was imposed on Kongolese due to slave trade , it was the language spoken by tippu tip. It is a foreign language

In Kenya 🇰🇪 we love Lingala but also wish that Congolese will learn Swahili so that most of East Africans can get to interact with them. My Dads generation grew up listening to Lingala Music even though they didn't understand the language. Some of our most popular musicians are of Congolese decent. and they sing perfect Swahili.
Swahili is actually one of Congo’s national languages and there is a big part of Congo that speaks Swahili, although it’s a little different to Kenyan Swahili. 😊

I am Kenyan and I speak both Kiswahili and Lingala fluently. I think both languages are so beautiful. I feel so privileged that I can speak the languages that are very widely spoken in this region.

It's an official language here. We study in french and we speak french at work. Again this language is the last of the problems congo has. French actually helps unite the western and eastern side of Congo. They both don't want learn each other's language, history and culture for some reason. This is where the work is. Apparently Africans are extremely tribalist, even the best of our kids are to the point exclusion of anything that isn't you. That's not the World I'm fighting for. You all just as weird as yfolks. You will be conquered. I mean look at Congo. A total mess and failure of organization.
I love your thinking and marturity in tackling this issue. I'm South African and my language is IsiZulu (Zulu), but I also speak SeSotho, IsiXhosa, Tsonga, Setswana and Afrikaans. I also speak a bit of KiSwahili. I'm proudly African🙂
I love your point of view on this matter. I am on the same journey as well. I can speak Swahili and Lingala (50%). I want to learn some Kikongo and Kiluba. Our country is amazing. I was born somewhere in Congo in a shwalili speaking enviroment but I grew up in kinshsa it makes me happy because today I can speak both lingala and swahila fluently

I can relate to your story, i was born and raised in a swahili environment now in Kinshasa, i learn another language, and learn to appreciate different culture and mentality. WE all are congolese, we should learn to love each other no matter where we're from😘
It's not just Congolese only even here in Kenya we believe so.The biggest Congolese export to other African countries is music which is 90% in Lingala language. This has made us believe that every muana mboka Kongo should speak fluent Lingala.
Lingala is definitely more widely spoken than any other national language in Congo currently. But it is no proof for being Congolese. I would excuse you guys from outside of Congo for thinking that because it’s coming from curiosity/not knowing. But Congolese people should know better. 😇
Swahili did not start in the Kongo , swahili is a foreign language but spoken in the Kongo due to the slavery of tippu tip

Congolese should embrace their local languages, it is their last line of defense. Mother tongue is always the line of defense. I love my mother tongue...meru in Kenya, besides I am good in swahili, English and other local languages. Am now trying to learn lingala. I wish I were good enough.

Wow and here it is I work with a lot of Congolese people and I'm an African American woman whose first language is English🤦🏾♀️ geez... Idk it was those type of problems on language.... I am actually fascinated that they can speak those many languages and to have a whole conversation and to switch between the languages.... it just blows me away. It's not that many AA on our shift but they embrace us and we do the same.... I'm glad I'm in a place where we can learn from each other.... currently learning French and I can understand some terms in Lingala but it's a well deserved learning process.... ✊🏾🖤👑💯

The western and central Congolese are known for looking down on eastern Congolese
As an eastern Congolese , I have experienced that attitude from western and central Congolese even here in USA
I’m 100 % native Congolese from bembe tribe but they still treat me as I’m not one of them once they here me speaking Swahili or when I tell them I’m eastern Congolese they always give me a side eye

I think people have this type of argument around the world, especially now since native languages or indigenous languages are coming back into fashion. As an American who can't speak Lingala or Swahili, I feel fully qualified to weigh in on this debate. I joke. I've looked into learning both at one time, and I've found Lingala more beautiful to my ears, but not by much. They are both beautiful languages. I once asked a Congolese person if she spoke Lingala, and she said, "What's that?" Damn shame.
You make a very good point. Congolese people you are all equal. In Switzerland for example, people speak French, German Italian, and Romansh.All of these 4 are national languages of that country. In DRC, why can you not all speak at least 2 national languages? Maybe, more people know Lingala. That is ok.Then they have to learn only one other language, either Kikongo , or kaluba or Kiswahili. Be fair to everybody.

Tell us please. I speak both Swahili and Lingala and few of Kikongo and I feel good about that. But we need one language to unite us because languages limit us a lot. My first time in Kinshasa I was a total stranger because I didn't know Lingala but Swahili. And in east we used to consider those who speak Lingala like they are bandits or soldiers

Hi! You're welcome. There is no difference between Swahili and Kiswahili. They both refer to the same language but the correct word is Kiswahili.
That s very nice for you to help your daughters learn one part of their culture. You may also find out where their dad come from so that they can know their specific tribe or ethnic group. If I know their name I can guess their are ethnic group bcse some names are specific to a specific ethnic but some are in many ethnic group.It just like when you ear a spanish italian or russian name that how we can tell which tribe they belong to by their name.
Important point my sister I really loved it, this should be stopped for really, when I heard you are talking its remind me so many things I passed trough when I got here in united state. I started go at school in high school and met A lot of Congolese there and I was so happy that I wont ndugu zangu na sitahangahika kivile, but when they hear I cant speak Lingala oooohhh even any project that we will do about our cauntry I will probably do myself and they do their together while saying they from Congo Brazzaville and I am from Congo Kinshasa so we cant do things together so I was like wowwww!!! and that not all...... we are one love guys, we suppose to love each other.

NIce discussion ,at least as somone who doesnt know too much about it .I love listening to LIngala music but dont really understand what the words mean unless I look them up .Swahilli I know some (lived in Kenya 4 years) .I was surprised when I was in Zambia that some spoke swahilli as I associated it with Kenya and Tanzania only.I think you did a nice job in actually building up Congo just by the words you spoke.

@ Neil Hickey people who speak swahili in Zambia are mostly Congolese. Zambia takes in lots of refugees from Congo. We also have Congolese who were born and raised in Zambia and speak swahili and other Zambian languages.

Strange , I'm kenyan but I struggled to learn Lingala because am a natural Swahili speaker. But what surprised me is that when I first got to DRC in 2017 and was speaking Lingala some of our local staff were not happy, they would always tell me "Lingala est une langue trés impoli" , and I couldn't understand why!

Your video is pretty interesting. I have never given these language identity a reconciliatory perspective. Am from the East and some how, have always felt that Swahili hasn t been given justice. Even more, sometimes I feel that lingala is overbearing and oppressive. I like the lingala music and that s about it and my view has always been that loving lingala music is comparable to how i love french or english music. When i think of Congo, the west has always been alien, that other side where they speak a different language and have a different way of living...that place I d may be go for a visit but not to live. For once you ve just made me realize that we are in the same boat and regardless of whether one speaks swahili or lingala, we are one people. Meanwhile, many of my friends do not speak lingala and we proud congolese

I am starting not to like Swahili due to the fact that it has too many Arabic words.
To my best of knowledge Tanzanians speak swahili in it most original Form but even theirs is drenched in Arabic.
I think that since Tanzania and Kenya are situated on the coast and exposed to Arab and non African influence in the past than most Swahili groups then it will be better for me to look in to more land locked Swahili speaking countries like Uganda and and DRC with less Arab influence.
So I need to learn the most adulterated Form of Swahili.

I'm from Katanga. Niko Muhemba. Historically east Congo was has ties to Tanzania, Sudan. We don't speak Lingala. Swahili is nice and smooth in speaking. Lingala is nice language too.

I think one big thing with Swahili is the issue going on in Eastern Congo and because of that Swahili has a negative light. I come from the North of Congo where Lingala originated and i understand that a lot of people don’t like Lingala because during colonisation it was a language colonisers chose to use to preach the bible in, in order to colonise and thats one of the reasons why it spread. I hope Congolese people do what South Africans do a lot of SA people i know can speak a lot of languages regardless of their ethnic backgrounds and i think it’ll be cool for us to know many languages to connect to our fellow Congolese people and neighbours. The conflict between languages however was purposely created by the belge before they left so that Congo never thrives. I do hope though that Congo never loses a single language or if people want to call it creole in the country and that as a country they protect every language and make sure it doesn’t die because these languages carry history and culture. I also hope that they would make dictionaries for every language in Congo so its easier for people to learn languages outside their ethnic groups or for people like me who are born abroad can learn their ethnic languages. I speak lingala and French i intend to learn swahili as of next year and would love to learn Kimongo which is my ethnic language as well as tshiluba because a lot of my closet family friends are luba and i love them to bits but there are no resources.
Parents (Dad from Maniema, Mom from Mbuji-Mayi) speak KiSwahili, Tshiluba, Lingala ,English, French, and English...sometimes in the same conversation..

Kikongo but I wasn't interest due to the fact I thought it was the tribe's language.
But all kids going up in Kinshasa we speak Lingala now I'm older would wish to pay attention to my mother, to learn Kikongo better too that only my regret.

My sister our problem, many of our brothers must be educated. jealousy, language is an integrating factor. I have Somali and Ethiopian friends who often teach me their language. When you consider or speak another's language automatically become familiar with that person.
Thank you as a person who is from Kinshasa and speak Lingala I don’t like the superiority complex of some Congolese towards other Congolese people it’s really ignorant but I do encourage all Congolese to learn lingala it’s a very awesome 😎 language not by force but for unity maybe the Congolese education system can do some combining with Swahili and lingala together to make a new language.
Kiswahili is the lingua franca of all Afrikans and people of Afrikan decent. As in the diaspora settled on Kiswahili as the language of all Afrikans and black people. I also request that though Kiswahili is a universal continental Afrikan and diaspora language of choice but please also hold on your local languages like Yuropa, Hausa, Bambara, Tabu, Isitzulu, Amharic, Chechewa, lingala(Music language), luganda, kinyarwanda, etc but Kiswahili unites us all.

Each congolese should master one, and know a little about each 4 languagues (Lingala, Kiswahili, kikongo & Tshiluba). But each one should also know its own Tribal language.

For some reasons a majorities ( not all ) of Brazzavillois/e believe that people of Pointe Noire are not Congolese enough because they do speak Munukutuba. Plus, my cousin is married to a lady from Pointe Noire and my other cousins be talking shit about her like " She's not one of us". Smdh🤦

I usually find that people who speak Lingala look down on others that don’t because they usually make comments like “you don’t know your language or how are you Congolese and not speak Lingala” this irritates me because I’m from Goma and as far as I know we speak Swahili
It makes no sense because most Congolese people live in the diaspora & therefore have very different lived experiences.I just wish we appreciated our own diversity instead of glorifying differences that sow seeds of division

It is important to keep in mind that Uganda and Rwanda are not ethnicities but nations therefore one can not be ethically Ugandan or Rwandese.

Like French which is one of DRC’s official language , Swahili was brought to Congo from the eastern coast due to our close proximity & that fact that these were trading routes. This is why Swahili is now one of the most spoken languages in DRC especially in populous cities in eastern Congo like Goma and Bukavu

As someone who’s not Congolese I have a question… why not just embrace these 4 beautiful national languages and kick out French entirely? I think many patriotic Congolese can agree a European language should have no significant place in the structure of the DRC
The problem is that french was the language congolese people have been colonized with and it's most used at school, administration and sometimes in public places, and for some reasons people still consider it as a sign of someone who is highly educated. And foremost, it easier to speak french with our other African francophone...so banning it will put a barrier communication. Regarding belonging to a country, I agree no country has possession over a language but there definitely is an origin that needs to be acknowledged and respected. All I’m saying is even though France has a relationship (albeit a horrid one) with the DRC they would never in a million years change the official language to Lingala so why hold on to the French language at such a high level within the Congolese government?

There are 2 Congo, the Republic of Congo which Brazzaville doesn't speak Swahili, but in the Democratic Republic of Congo the former Zaïre, do speak Swahili, in the eastern part of the country and the southern part.
The feeling of boycott Lingala or Swahili between Swahiliphones and Lingalaphones is a little bit broad, First of all Swahili speaking people occupies the biggest part of Congo(All Eastern and Southern part) and Lingala is spoken mainly in the Capital Kinshasa and part the province of Equateur and the rest part of Congo speaks Kikongo or Tshiluba. But many people speak Lingala regardless where they are located at beacause lingala is a musical language (Many songs are sung in Lingala). AS you may know in many African countries military and police use one language for communication and Lingala is used as Military and Police language in Congo. As you know military and Police are seen as enemies by the population therefore in Swahili speaking part when a person is arrested by a police , the person feels more offended and the feeling of resistance is higher when the police is speaking in different language. In addition, people who are from Kinshasa have the feeling of superiority toward people from provinces , they assume everybody should know lingala since Kinshasa is the Capital City of Congo, that s make more people to have the feeling to boycott lingala and people from Kinshasa dont consider to learn Swahili as they consider provinces are villages.

Normally the government should have implemented a language program at school in teaching all 4 national languages in all provinces so that people would have minimum communication skills in all national languages.
That is exactly what happened in Uganda. The Baganda and some tribes refused Swahili because it was a military/police language and the military was controlled by the people from the north and north-western part of the country. That is why most of the Swahili speakers are found outside central Uganda, including Kampala.

1st let me say in my study of indigenous languages of Afraka I have purist leanings, meaning unless absolutely necessary I hate even loan words of outside languages. I would rather when necessary we borrow from a fellow tongue of the Continent of Afraka than IndoEuropean or elsewhere.
Also concerning Kiswahili it was selected by the OAU in the 1960's to be the unifying international language of Afraka but people particularly west Afrakanu rejected it. Even in western diaspora in spite of being the language of Kwanzaa ( Furaha Kwanzaa by the way) it was rejected by many Christians claiming it was a muslim language and other afrocentrics on grounds it was too corrupted by arabic. Many others rejected it because it was said it is not a language of the regions where most of those who came through trans atlantic slave trade come from.
So considering this past experience brings to the question of what must be considered when unifying by language no matter if Kiswahili, Lingala, or Kikongo. Most languages usually spread based on religious or trade factors, yet not always and it doesn't have to be. I just mentioned this because we must consider human nature and impulses in our selection. So then the questions are: *what tradition(s) does the language support and will help facilitate it's spread? Example: I noticed that in the States Asians may use English for business, school,and sometimes trade but through their marital arts traditions have kept alive Korean and Japanese and so on coupled with the habit of speaking their language at home. Kikongo ( as I have stated here in other comments) or possibly Mbundu can do that Capoeira ( N'golo or Kipura). For Capoeira is one of the main factors facilitating the international spread of Portuguese. Another thing is Kikongo can be used to purify Kiswahili of the corruption of arab loan words for both are Bantu. Also keep in mind that the spread of arabic on The Continent wasn't solely religious but trade as well. Just as Kiswahili spread primarily due to trade. *What is the numerical amount of the body of speakers that already exists? For we don't need to recreate the wheel. * What is the geographical spread of the body of speakers? To my understanding Kiswahili is primarily spoken only in the Eastern Congo border areas and never penetrated the central or the west. So concerning the Congo which is more widespread Lingala or Kikongo (& I mean Kikongo not Creole-Congo called Kituba)? Since we must be international in our thinking it is worth considering how well spread the language is outside of the focus area of the Congo. For we know the most wide spread language of The Continent outside of Afraka is Kiswahili. Yet as for Lingala and Kikongo I'm not sure but it's I would think likely Kikongo. For Lingala just isn't mentioned as much and Congo singers are known and praised throughout the Continent and somewhat in diaspora. This will prove useful in travel when people have a common indigenous language they can use.
*A simple practical question is how easy is the language to teach and learn? It's a reason that only Khoikhoi is preserving Khoikhoi. That is not a slight at Khoikhoi and I am not implying that they shouldn't preserve it but simply it's hard as well as what I know of it impractical for use outside their ethnicity.
***Another extremely important practical question is how well equipped is the language for modern scientific technological use? If one is not considering this question I question their validity and seriousness. For we know when observing the state of israel transition from yiddish to modern hebrew they used ancient often obscure terms to construct scientific technological modern terms. As stated previously when this can't be done we should turn to borrowing from other tongues indigenous to Afraka. For example we know through the study of Dogon cosmology that has so captivated the world it is equipped with astronomical terms as well as those that refer to phenomenon on a molecular level. This means it is a good source for scientific terms just as also is Kemetic shown in what has been called Smith and Rhind papyrus as well as others. **Finally my question why are we not listening to our scholars? Specifically as it concerns the Congo, specifically concerning its language and culture(s), why are we not aleast considering Kimbwandende Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau? Also of the Congo Theophile Obenga. What of Cheikh Anta Diop of Senegal? What of Nana Bianche Darkwah? What of the many other Afrakani scholars of Afraka and the Diaspora? What of those that sincerely made a life study of preserving us and our culture that dedicated their life, mind, and study to our upliftment? What did they recommend? What did they suggest? What were their instructions?
Note the EU has 24 official languages which English,German, French, and Spanish top. English has been declared a must for all passports and is the international language of airports. All the European countries have kept their national languages yet go along with this program. I have never heard Greek complaining about the status of anything nor a Romanian conflicting with the program. Kiswahili penetrated deep up into Maniema which is the center eastern province of the D.R.C with no border to Tanzania. From my observations, Swahili might be the one with a lot of speakers in Congo followed by lingala, Tchiluba, then Kikongo although lingala was imposed to spread by selecting It as the language of the army and promoted in music by the late president Mobutu. So if you know about Congo history, you will notice that if It wasn't for the Belgian to impose lingala in the army after the revolt of swahili-speaking part of the colonial army (Bahuni Revolt), and later the Lumumba assassination, Swahili could have penetrated more than It is now because P.E. Lumumba was a speaker of both Swahili and Lingala. Also, as a speaker of both swahili and lingala, I can testify that there are many words in both lingala and kikongo that are very similar to the words in swahili.

As for Lingala and Kikongo let them then be secondary language choices in schools. Just as in the US, where english is official but most schools offer spanish and some french as second language study option.
In addition to this as I stated in previous commentary we could use Kikongo or Lingala or maybe Mbundu and previously stated by making it the official language of the art of capoeira. I know many may not understand how the last statement plays a part in the Congo but one must study the history of the art to understand. Another thing is regardless it would preserve that language in a practical function way without disturbing the program of making Kiswahili the official language of the Congo region. I never got into portuguese but it would be great to stop trying to sing in that then translate the terms, songs and stories to Kikongo. As for Kiswahili I study that( or I am a mwanafunzi) but I'm rusty. Not only because I am self taught alone but I recently was planning to travel and so I sent all my Swahili study materials ( dictionaries and phrase booklet) ahead of me then a delay came up. So I am down to checking a few term online every now then and speaking every blue moon by phone with an elder I know that studies by self teaching method as well.
Also I am unsure if you ever heard of the combat system known as Kupigana Ngumi but the practicianers (wapigana) use both Kemetic and Kiswahili. The only problem with that is it's only the high ranking practicianers that even have some what of a grasp on either language.
My personal goal is to do my part in preserving indigenous language and when I personally master one that will be for my home and inner circle. English I say is just for doing business in english speaking regions. However of course ever so often after mastering an indigenous language I communicate with those that have not.

Now swahili is know as a only one language to unit Africa. Lot’s of Languages. The DRC is a big country that contains numberous tribes and some that aren’t known.
Here is a briefing: DRC has more than 400 tribes, but people have some language that help as a link whether you're in the North, south east, west or center, to make communication a lot more easier the government decided to vote for those 4 languages among all the dialects, cause they regroup people(north east, east and south-swahili, center- tshiluba, North west, west-kikongo-lingala and in the capital lingala) and will shorten misunderstanding so i'll say that french IS a language that can help you understood wherever you go in Congo.

Kenya we have 43 languages Some are Cushitic, some are Bantu, Nilotic, and Nubian but they are not recognized under Kenyan constitution even though we use Swahili to unite as we have tribalism that divides the country for Africa to Unite we must start with ourselves or will continue having tribalism that device as apart from Nationalism which is still in a lot of peoples mindsets in Africa out said of our individual countries.

Consider this perspective, somebodu is born in the Kivu, tribes around Kivu have cross border relationships with tribes that speak swahili, whatever is imported into Kivu comes from the ports of Mombasa and Daresalam which speak swahili, it is even easier for a Kivuian to get to Nairobi and Daresalam than Kinshasa, most business connection people from Kivu have are East African look at all those perspectives then ask yourself why would somebody from Kivu speak Lingala.
Someone from Kivu would speak Lingala because they're Congolese despite their proximity to other African countries. That being said, my point in this video was not to say that people from Kivu must speak Lingala, you misunderstood my message at that part. Kivu is a Swahili speaking part of Congo, just like Kinshasa is a Lingala speaking part of Congo. My message was to encourage young Congolese people to be interested in learning about their country in all its sides. Thanks
That's exactly my experience. My family was in import export businesses in Kivu with Kenya and Tanzania since the 60's. I often visited East African countries until the war came then I ran to S.A. Funny enough, It's in South Africa that I started learning lingala until I became fluent now in the U.S.

No actually, political power in Congo has always been shared in the sense that we have had leaders from all language groups. I do believe however that our political leaders have to promote national unity...they have to make it attractive. So far, they've been using division to promote their political agendas and this is just my honest observation. They can do more in this area really. Glad you like the videos by the way! Also, some of the tribes in the east are actually from other east African tribes (babemeba are from Zambia) these tribes consider themselves ethnically congolese when they are not. If you are of East African origin and have lived all your life in Congo then you are Congolese nationality and not Ethnicity.

Some people mistake the Lambas speaking people of the copper belt who trace their origin from the Luba-lunda kingdom to say they are related to the Bemba of Northern province.
The Bemba history is more aligned to the tribes of East Africa.

Also, one of the reasons whites are able to divide us is because we do not have a strong national identity. We identify based on our tribes first before country. Isn't it important we all communication under a language that can be found in Congo only, instead of French or Swahili?
