- My name is Ranton. I am Shaolin Disciple. And this is my review for Resident Evil 4 Remake that was released in 2023 by Capcom. I always say Survival is just the beginning. Six years have passed since the biological disaster in Raccoon City. Leon S. Kennedy, one of the survivors, tracks the president's kidnapped daughter to a secluded European village, where there is something terribly wrong with the locals.

I agree with the map thing in this game. It can break immersion and it's not really needed unless you're collecting and want to explore everything
Would have been better to still have a map but you need to find a map to unlock it, i have found myself getting lost once or twice so it would be nice to know which doors ive been through, which ones are still unlocked and such

the intialy gameplay would ltierally take 30 hrs with no map. Imagine ashely section or returning to the basement, or countless other times where map is needed. Outrageous

I like gradually revealing maps especially if it adds to the mystery. You enter an area and you get stuff on the map once you have checked it out.
Frankly, I've never played RE games but I would like to try some day. This remake might be the push I needed...

@@liquid1514 the game imo has these unexplained moments that happen. I usually play the for the story the first go around and do all the side quests etc later. I’ve had to restart chapters because of lack of ammo that’s needed to kill certain enemies. The pickups are random and when Ashley gets abducted by design, I’ve seen him pop up out of nowhere to pick her up. Sometimes right in front of me. Right now I have to start over completely from chapter 14 because I’m frustrated.
@@tagjr9744 what difficulty are you playing on? I did it on standard for my first play through and did alright. I HATED some parts of the castle and island though.

I agree with the map taking away from the experience a little. I found myself checking it too much to get the treasures and to see where to go a little too often. I genuinely had a better time on my second playthrough just playing the game and not worrying about that shit. This game is absolutely a masterpiece in my opinon though 7/10
Absolutely ridiculous in like the best way possible lmao. My favorite thing about it is despite the remake being much more serious, the camp of the og was kept intact.

Came here straight from the MK11 intro/outro recreations that popped up because I got obsessed with MK right now once again because a new MK is coming out, and I absolutely loved this energy. I instantly subbed.
Always love to watch Ranton going completely crazy, the review in between is nice too.
I do kind of fell you on the map thing, I think a way they could have gone about it is in the beginning of each chapter you start of with no map, completely lost and always wondering what’s around the corner thus creating a greater sense of exploration and also horror, the greatest fear is the fear of the unknown type beat, and they could use the lack of map to really fuck with you and give you some crazy anxiety while still having the level distinct enough you don’t get lost, and the halfway through or towards the end of a chapter if you choose to keep exploring you can find a map of the area that you can use to find secrets and shit, that way you keep the no map vibes while also having a map, since it’s a bonus and makes sense in games as Leon explore more of the world he would grow accustomed to the layout and gain a bette sense of location as you the player also get a better sense of the level and thus have a map.
Kinda like how it is in Elden Ring

@@abdolpix4581 yhe although you could technically miss the map there were all in pretty obvious places, I’m suggesting some more challenging in the exploration sense, it doesn’t need to be super secret like of some the mr raccoons in re2 remake, but it would be nice if you had to go a bit out of you war to find them.

3:08 for real! the game for its genre performs great when during claustrophobic moments of getting mobbed, even how sparse the combat is, it shines as how satisfying it was when you flawlessy connect shooting, CQC, parrying, and ducking/crouch.

I've always preferred that when I am given a map, it unfolds as I explore whether that's finding an item that unlocks parts of the map like Elden Ring or just based on where you actually go like in Valheim
@10:37 I wonder if Ranton has heard of a fighting game that was made on the Xbox called Tao Feng Fist of the Lotus. It included a body damage system that was implemented in the game and you would burn meter to break the opponents body part or heal part of your own. John Tobais worked on the game, which may have also been a precursor to the x-ray system included in the MK games after.

The REmake automatically got a 10 from me when I got to the Krauser fight.
No QTE like in the original, it was an *actual knife fight*. Pulling the parry chain and landing that big flashy kick as a reward had me on my feet and screaming
That fight was clean. Capcom nailed it.

(And he still manages to do something badass while bleeding to death lol)
OG luis is still better and funnier too, Luis in remake shined in the minecart section

Bruh I agree! The RE engine, the Fox Engine from MGSV, and Decima engine from Death Stranding are all so smooth and snappy.
They are not corporated made engine like Unity or cringy UE4/5, these engines handle bugs and overload much better

a nice middle ground for the map is do an expanding map of the explored areas. Zoomed to fit current size like elden ring so you can't use it to metagame layout from zoomed out size

On the map thing, I prefer the way that Star Ocean does it where your map is drawn as you move forward. You'd never enter a place with a map. But you can create it if you check every crevice. That way, every space feels new, while at the same time, if you wanna be able to retrace easily, you have access to that. And even providing the option to buy a map every time you come across the strange salesman, for those that want to skip that process, gives an opt-out.
That was the hardest plug for patreon I've ever seen and I've never wanted to give my money to anyone any more than I have right now.
I agree about the map. A map makes any game into a bit of a checklist. I'd much rather explore on my own. If you want to have a map, make it one that the player can find in the level they are in. That way the whole area isn't immediately revealed to the player via an automap. Helps to keep some mystery.

The point about the map showing you parts of the area that you havent explored is pretty true for the most part, it takes away a lot of the suspense and mystery of finding new areas and secrets etc. Even so i dont think they should remove it but rather do something like elden ring where the more you explore or reach certain checkpoints the further the map reveals itself. Good balance between reward for exploring and information in case you want to back track

Agreed about the map thing. I think they kind of tried to keep it similar to RE2 Remake because it has the system that shows you the stuff you may have left behind or stuff you haven't collected.
I think a decent compromise is that if you explore the area, it'll appear on the map and until you get there, it's not there. In other words, you reveal the map yourself.
Also agree with the chapter select thing. It'd make the challenges a lot easier to complete because I wouldn't have to play 9 hours to get to the lift to do the challenge to not let the lift stop.

I liked the map system, but i almost never used it to lead me. Just for the secrets. When I was at the end of a part of the map I always checked if I missed something. But i get your problem.

i like the map aspect and if it was removed it would make it a little more interesting here and there but overall it'd just be frustrating, especially on repeat plays where i would personally just end up having a map of the game pulled up on my phone or something, i could maybe agree with collectibles not being visible though, at least first time playing

Not enough reviewers thoughtfully approach this concept. They just throw💩at the devs and hope people like it. Your idea of removing the full map is so clutch. As an old head I even agree with no map. Never dawned on me how much more it would mess with new players. Already added the sound queues for items too.

I really agree with those points. The voice acting for certain characters could have really been better. And having no map would really encourage exploration more. Maybe you have to find the map or make it like a fog of war situation?

Yo I love the idea of the map being gone but for collectable reasons I love it. Maybe make it not visible unless you buy it from the merchant and it happens to have to the collectables with it.
late but I've never really thought of the negatives you mentioned aside from the voice acting, and honestly I agree. There _should_ be manual flashlight controls, there _should_ be chapter select, and honestly? Maybe the ability to turn off the map too...Although I can't imagine a first playthrough like that.
