  • As a Real Chinese Person and as a Real Shaolin Disciple, I have to say that Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a new dark fantasy Three Kingdoms action RPG from Team NINJA, the developers of Nioh. Yes yes. That is what it is and that is what I am reviewing today. I am very proud of this video. The kung fu in the beginning is so epic. I hope you enjoy!
    Shoutout to my boi 会功夫的丁小圆 for the kung fu inspiration. Always so awesome to see some fun choreos to recreate!

    Straight up Koei's story telling caters directly to us history enthusiasts, and from watching a lot of Wolong and Nioh streams, there's always a huge difference in chat towards the game's story. In JP, CN, KR streams it is full of Three Kingdoms and Sengoku era lore and every cutscene is hype with chat dropping lore bombs and memes. People quote stuff like 马中赤兔,人中吕布, talk about Diao Chan's most famous beauty trap that earned her the title of one of the 4 great beauties of China, or dumb memes from how Cao Cao is pronounced Jojo in KR.
    And in Western streams, nobody understands anything, I'm actually surprised that even Ranton didn't understand anything when the Three Kingdoms is the most influential history and story in East Asian culture, it literally is the last great conflict that CN, JP and KR all enjoy together. In KR streams people would ask the streamer to use CN VA because CN voice is the best for Three Kingdoms, I even learnt from KR chat that in the 15th century the KR emperor claimed that Guan Yu appeared in his dream to provide guidance.
    I learnt so much lore watching Wolong Asian streams from chat, Red Hare supposedly ran so fast he sweats blood turning him red, Guan Yu's head and body was buried separately because the enemies wanted to make sure he doesn't come back to life etc.

    So, i can actually provide something like an „explanation“ as to why the story felt so bad and disconnected from each other.
    It was kind of the same with NioH. They focused to cover the most important parts of the historical events of the game and not the whole thing. So it‘s rather common that in one scene, you just met a historical figure from one War and are fighting another historical Figure in the next war with the in between basically being: „everything in between these 2 events happened as in history, so no need to cover it“.
    But with Wo Long, it might even be a bit *more* extra. Team Ninja alone wasn’t working on this game but in collaboration with Koei Tecmo who are mainly known for the Dynasty Warriors games. So they probably expect Wo Long players to have played the Dynasty Warriors games and go [insert Leonardo DiCaprio pointing finger meme] „hey, i remember that from the other games!“

      Let me make it simpler. Tecmo/Koei can't tell a decent story to save their lives. I've played TN games for years. You won't find anything CLOSE to good writing in any of their games. Not DOA. Not Ninja G. No point in caring about Nioh's story. And sure as fuck NOT Wo Long.

    • @youradhere3476
      @youradhere3476 Рік тому +5

      @@ZombiAstral true. Surface level references does not a good story make, as far as i'm concerned. I liked nioh 2 as a game but the devs managed to make a retelling of sengoku period japan - a very interesting, dramatic, and well documented period in history - barely coherent and really difficult to get invested in for more reasons than i care to talk about in a comment section. The whole story was already there, they only needed to tell it competently while adding a few nice twists here and there to give their version of the story a reason to exist, instead they pretty much butchered it.

    • @kubasliwa204
      @kubasliwa204 Рік тому +4

      Team Ninja was collaborating with Koei Tecmo on Nioh 1 and 2 as well. So I don't think it has anything to do with Wo Long being even more disjointed, seeing as Wo Long is to Dynasty Warriors what Nioh is to Samurai Warriors.
      I'd say it comes down more to personal preference, which of these games is easier to follow (or rather, which is less shitty). I think I had an easier time keeping up with Nioh's story, because I'm more fond of Japanese culture than Chinese, so I'm just naturally more interested in a game with a Japanese settings than a game with a Chinese one. Also the names in Nioh were easier to differentiate to me, the Chinese names are just too short to me.
      But all this notwithstanding, you still have to commit to reading tons of flavor text in item descriptions and glossaries if you actually want to have a better grasp on what the fuck is going on in the story.

      @@ZombiAstral there's an exception: Final Fantasy Origins: Stranger of Paradise. The story starts out like average TN fashion with just skipping everything and getting straight to the point with no reason and then the plot takes a wild twist.

      Actually this is the first video from Ranton I felt that he has limited cultural knowledge. Wolong is based on the Three Kingdoms, one of the 3 great literature of China so literally everyone in East Asia knows something about it and a large number of people especially Chinese would know the characters and story by heart.
      Ranton not understanding the story of Wolong is actually shocking to me because it's a summary of the main arcs and plot lines of the Three Kingdoms and has direct quotes from the literature.

    I'm not as familiar with the history of the Three Kingdoms period, but stitching together what I know from Nioh and Nioh 2's story and general history of feudal Japan; the story is usually just a very loose retelling of real world history with character motivations and significant feats being replaced or based around whatever new magic demon crystal they came up with. I feel like they just kind of presume that anyone playing is already aware of what actually happened so they don't bother to explain what military campaigns are happening, where they're happening, or why. They just throw Guan Yu and Lu Bu in your face so you can point and go "oh hey I know that guy."

    Wo Long's magic abilities could've been simply improved by making them flow with attack combos, so that using magic does not interrupt the flow like Rantoni said in 6:15. It's too bad that they decided to loot spam rather than making each magic and weapon synergize beautifully.

    • @aryabratsahoo7474
      @aryabratsahoo7474 Рік тому +5

      It actually flows well if you know what you're doing instead of always being aggressive. The magic is more utilitarian than just basic offensive attack. When used correctly, you can get more spirit, completely annihilate boss spirit, negate their elements, and gain health back from attacking them.
      Funnily enough you can make weapons and magic synergize by using weapon type that cater to a specific magic affinity, then putting in those "small number" stats in the weapon and armour, and then use the respective spells that have more affinity with that weapon.
      It's bad for newcomers and casuals, but extremely engaging for players who are willing to delve deep into it's mechanics that TN is well known for. It's funny that it's has an easier learning since you mostly have to get good at deflects to survive compared to learning Nioh 2's stances, yokai shifts, 3 different burst counters, 3 stances, ki pulse and yokai soul attacks in order to complete it.

  • @justs_
    @justs_ Рік тому +8

    Having a couple hundred hours of playtime on the Nioh games and endlessly trying to replicate the badass and incredibly difficult combos people do, I was really hoping the game would build upon those games' stance/combo system, cause the different stances opened up a lot of room for experimentation, it was punishing to make mistakes but so rewarding if you pull it off, look up any Nioh combo videos and its absolutely insane how much badassery you could pull off if u can master the mechanics. Somewhat disappointed they stripped a lot of those deeper combo elements for something much more simple and completely removed stances essentially, despite us having more weapon types, combo variety is a massive downgrade in my opinion. And yeah "wall of text" type ui, loot garbage and abysmal droprate for good shit is a problem in the Nioh games and its a problem here too.
    Complaints aside though, I still love this game and I managed to keep up with the story and resonated with some of the emotional bits.. but mostly cause I watched that 2010 Three Kingdom tv show so I have a general idea of who everyone is. And despite my disappointment in the limited combos, the new parry system is awesome, had so much fun with the overall rhythm of it, and I'm sure the magic system could substitute for some flashy in-between combos tho I'm gonna need to experiment with that. 7 out of 10 is a very fair score and I 100% agree with that.
