  • If you are the child or grandchild of a person born in Jamaica it is really easy to become a Jamaican citizenship yourself as well as apply for a Jamaican passport. There are a great number of reasons why that you can read on the official Jamaican websites. You will need Birth Certificate and Passport for yourself and your Jamaican parent OR Birth Certificate & Passport for yourself, one parent and Jamaican Birth Certificate and Jamaican Passport of one Jamaican Grandparent.

I got my Jamaican citizenship 3 years ago as it was important for me to be more connected. It was such an easy process! I took my Father's info (my mother is Jamaican too) as I only needed one parent. It felt so good when they told me congrats on your citizenship ❤.
I never went for the passport as yet though. You cannot kill 2 birds with one stone over here in the US. You have to go back again to complete your PP request ONCE you get the citizenship welcome document. I only never made it a priority because my US PP was just about to expire and felt it was more pressing to get that one back first. I am in no rush, but before I go to Ghana, I will get my JM PP 🙌. I have no record of my parents or grandparents information. They are all deceased. I only have whatever paperwork my mother gave to customs when I came to America. I had my green card and am now an American citizen. Do you think immigration would have my parents birth information on my paperwork? I’m trying to get back to JA and reclaim my citizenship. With the birth certificate for your parents or grandparents. You need the long form birth certificate. Not the small birth certificate (about A5 size).
My mum only had the small birth certificate, which the lady in the London High Commision office said wasn't good enough for it.
    Edit:
Applying for the full birth certificate from Jamaica takes about 2 months (at least) so get this in order first.
At the time I am writing this, the next available appointment for me is about 3 months in the future. So it should arrive before my appointment.
Also, check you know people who can sign for your photographs. The amount of people who can sign for the passport is a lot smaller than it would be to apply for a British Passport IF you are applying from outside of Jamaica.
For overseas applicants the following persons, who need not be citizens of Jamaica, may certify the applications
    Justice of the Peace
    Attorney-at-law
    Notary Public
    Medical Doctor
Minister of Religion authorized to perform marriages

I applied for JA citizenship and passport earlier this year via High Commission, and they were happy just to accept his birth certificate on its own. Your grandmother's UK passport should state her place of birth, so I guess this is acceptable.

If you're British, your JA parent's name can be added to your birth certificate. As an adult, this will be in the form of a note added to the original register, which will be copied to a new birth certificate. However, you (or parent if they are living) will have to supply official documentation that proves that they are your parent (contact the registry office for further advice.) The service will cost you £90 for the change plus the cost of a new birth certificate.
