Skagit County's only low-barrier homeless shelter could close due to funding issues

- Skagit First Step is funded by a county fee put on real estate transactions, and as the market has cooled, so has the funding.
It costs about $90,000 to operate the facility every month.
Executive Director Jonathan Kline says First Step needs approximately $270,000 to stay open until a new round of funding comes through in July.
"I think it will come together. I don't know how, but we provide a key service and people realize that," says Kline.
But even if that funding miraculously comes through, Skagit County has about a million dollars less to fund homeless services this year. Any money spent at First Step would likely come out of another organization's pocket.
The bottom line is the closure would mean 70 more people back on the streets, and so much hard work to get off of them, lost.

Heartbreaking when you work your whole life to end up with nothing. I’m praying for everyone 🙏🏼
The housing market needs to crash now.
Not going to happen. Tijuana to Toronto.
God bless anyone who is going through this me and my husband are homeless at the moment and we feel like our government failed us how can they allow human beings to live outside.......OUTSIDE!!!! they don't think about that or think about our animals etc....I pray God gets this under control fast it's cold out and nobody should be out in that weather
But yet wa state can spend 707 thousand on rocks to keep unless away on free way ramp
I hope them and their dog our going to be OK. The people who do drugs should not be allowed in shelters, drugs is a choice
The "profile" of who is homeless varies. In Canada it's almost ALL drug and mental health related, though I know of one exception I provide employment for: tough outdoor guy. In the UsA you have entire families homeless; different issue.
Hmm. Base funds off a historic housing boom, and then complain you can’t balance the funds. Maybe they should ask Jay Inslee for money, he’s visited twice in the last two years, and promised funds for maintenance and expansion. Maybe keep a close eye on actions, instead of voting for a “D” or “R” next election cycle. Neither party gives two hoots about me or you.
Where is this what state?
Skagit area of Washington state, up north of Seattle (Anacortes; Burlington, etc.)
NC may have low cost housing 😊
