- One man has come up with a solution to his own homelessness which could be an alternative to those opposed to going to a shelter. It's a portable residence called the Cramper - a cramped camper on wheels
I like how it looks like a public utility box or a railroad signal box
make it less likely to be broken into, or have someone complain and call the cops
Exactly! Paint a business logo on the side and it would be very stealth. Few people would question it.
Until you have 100 of them in a row!

Think of the advertising dollars earned on the side of these shelters .
Remove the wheels and store them inside. Paint it to look like a utilities box.
Being able to get warm is HUGE. You can renew yourself if you can get warm and get some sleep.

When I was homeless in the 1990s I would have absolutely jumped on something like that without a moments' hesitation. The 'official' shelters where I was at the time were exploitative and often dangerous.

Staying clean and sober from alcohol or drugs is a very hard battle at times and it's actually exhausting at times. Any praise or kind words can help keep us going for another day.

Any individual who would rather stay in a little "camper" that is at times frosty over a city run shelter, well that speaks volumes about how those shelters really are.
What do you expect? Homeless shelters are filled with homeless people. Aka, mostly mentally ill and drug addicted people.
It's the people not the shelters that are the problem.
People stay up talking all night long, yakking away, very loud and playing their stereos. Great if you get SSI disability or alimony or something every month but if you work and have to get up early to go to a job it's the road to disaster, IS the problem. That was my experience, none of the women needed to work or wanted to work in there and couldn't even comprehend it. Next is there were ladies who had 6 or 7 kids and when they piled on the chores they'd get their chores done in 10 minutes but a woman alone would take her 7 hours to do the same chore and it was unfair. There are some other issues but those 2 stand out for me.

I was homeless for six years, this I a resourceful idea. I just know in my heart of hearts if more homeless did this the local council would just remove them. I think it's ironic because just tonight I thought if a great idea of a product that can tick all boxes if you find yourself home less. Tonight was the first inception, I've ordered some of the materials and I'm going to make a prototype.

After a Toronto bidding war it sold for $1.2 million.

And the city was overjoyed as now his property taxes are over $25K per year and the city officials voted themselves a pay increase

Property currently sits vacant. New owner no where to be found and is in arrears on property taxes.
Original owner has left Toronto for good.

For someone to say homelessness is a form of mental illness is very much misinformed. You would be surprised of how many people who are homeless used be doctors,lawyers, this who lost their jobs their homes. God forbid one day you end up there. Has nothing to with mental health. Your circumstances can change in the blink of an eye and if you're not prepared for it this could very well happen.
And, its secure, the resident doesn't have to worry for their safety.
Unless someone seals the door and pushes it into a lake while he's sleeping!

@@razorman65 a lot of them are mentally ill and cannot hold a job. Those people need mental healthcare and training so they can get a job. However, our economy is not designed for everyone to have a job, there are those who are mentally and physically handicapped who, due to no fault of their own, cannot work. We have thousands of homeless veterans. My daddy was a veteran and between his pension, social security and VA check, he barely got by. Then, when he got a $98 raise on his social security checks, the VA stopped his VA check, because he made $98 per year too much! The US owes these veterans better care.

@@razorman65 I do agree with you there! In my area, our homeless population is mostly veterans and mentally ill. I do see some that are either too lazy to work or do not have enough education to get a job, such as high school drop[ outs or those with learning disabilities that didn't get the right help from the schools. For those lacking education but who wants to work or is working but can't afford an apartment, I think they need training programs to give them a hand up, instead of a hand out.
As a city resident I approve! Anything to ease the load on their unfortunate situation!

Dont get why people are being salty. Everyone has their own life and needs. If you have a job and can live in an apartment or wherever in the city, who should be angry at you for it. Live the life you can without depleting yourself, it doesnt mean you dont care or dont wish you could help, but if helping someone else, especially financially, would put you in danger of being homeless or lacking yourself, youre not really serving anyone from the heart, more like from an idea that you "have to", its not healthy to deplete all your resources, even when its something "good". It could very well leave you in the same position.
I want to build something like this.

Cities don’t allow them because of red tape. Some young people built and donated some shelters in an article I read and the city took them away because of code violations or something along that line. There has to be a way, but they seem to prefer to have people in traditional homeless shelters due to legalities. If I was homeless I would rather have my own small shelter than stay in a building with a bunch of other people.
I'm doing well financially and I would love to live in something like this. True freedom.

All the vacant properties around and there’s people sleeping outside, it’s just crazy. A little sweat equity makes most people feel a little better and the buildings wouldn’t mind. A warehouse would keep a few people out of the snow and cold.

@@deborahchesser7375 It helps the owners and neighbors because they don't have homeless living there spreading trash, feces, and drug needles everywhere. It may sound harsh, but that is what happens in homeless communities. Pretty sure you wouldn't want that next door. Then, after someone complains, the owner has to pay someone to come in and clean up the place. So yea, there is a reason why vacant places are not used for homeless.

I'm living in a car with a heater and air a 97 this would be too small for me. Some local all night parking lots are letting me park for a night. I try to only stay one night except for our campground. When it warns up I will use a tent part of the time. My situation is difficult to explain. I could rent a room in a house at any time.

Don't give up though, no matter how difficult it may seem. I hope one day soon it'll be all but a distant memory to you. After living in a semi truck for years, I can relate to this. He's got a little bit more room than I have though.
Frankly, it has some benefits over a shelter. They can be pretty bad. I know.
Shelters are run by little tyrants that constantly make up new rules as you go.

I'm homeless and living off a bicycle. Right now I'm camped in the woods, working on a Bushcraft Camp. The problem with what I'm doing is the cops can come kick me out anytime and write me citations... Someday, I'm gonna build one like this, but probably smaller to pull behind my bike. There's a guy in Washington who builds them as a hobby and a guy in Texas that drives a motorized bicycle contraption.. Those guys got it figured out... Because my biggest problem is people messing with me at night time... Not that long ago, I was laying in my sleeping bag, and somebody came up behind me and threw a bunch of bugs on my and ran off... I need to build one of these so I can lock the door and have some security

They didn't show his face so the city and negative people can't readily find him. If the city knew who or where he was they would most likely destroy the whole thing. That's what every other city does with these type of structures unfortunately

And what if he doesn't want to build them for others? He probably didn't want to build his own, but reluctantly did it just out of necessity. I've seen homeless people taken off the street and given a nice apt, clothes, food, etc and they returned right back to the street because that's what they like. You can't make people live the way you do.
If you had half an ounce of creativity you would contact the news org that interviewed him as they obviously know who the guy is. Probably all talk though.

Whine. Whine whine. I started out at 35 cents per hour. There is a different minimum wage for those capable of jobs with capability of tip vs businesses without tips. The restaurant , casino, etc with tip capability pay less in govt federal tax vs business owners of businesses without tips capability.

Business owners are destroyed if you are a straight retail brick and mortar business, not service.

You have a very loose understanding of our economy.
Raising the minimum wage to $15/hr, does little to help, or hurt the average worker.
Business owners simply compensate for the increased overhead expenses, by raising the cost of goods and/or services offered.
Only the Tax Revenue collected by the government, is increased in the long-run.
This is because income taxes increase proportionately with earned wages.
And, when the wages are used to buy food, clothing, fuel, housing, electricity, etcetera ...
then, Sales Tax is increased proportionately with the cost of those goods.
Thus, the government is the only entity that receives More, without providing anything.
They are not going to teach you this, in your high school Economics class.

Just adding a heat lamp would help out a lot. Great that he helped himself. They should hve parking lots with solar panels free for the homeless. That would provide them with shelter from weather above and free power to pwer their little homes.

There was a guy who built many of something like this in Los Angeles , for the people sleeping on the streets but the city removed them!
Guy's name is Elvis Summers. He builds tiny homes for the homeless. Then the city yanks them away...so he builds more. You can find him on Facebook.

The City should fund Tiny homes ( a group of homes ), with a communal bathroom and kitchen, a communal washer and dryer would solve so many problems, and give homeless people, dignity and some hope.

I did last year
Cheapest house in Bozeman, MT is $500k, thanks to the Californians moving here and buying up houses sight unseen. Look it up if you like, it was it's own epidemic in the last year. Locals can't afford a home. People are basically feeling forced to move because they can't afford the area, and people with dreams of living here have to lose out because they can't find affordable housing in the area. Builders are offering dollars on the penny to buy land to build condos that won't be ready for another year.
Mom bought her house for $172k 5 years ago. It's worth almost double that. My neighbor bought his 4 years ago for $200k and he said it's valued at $372k.

So... technically not “homeless” when you have ownership of your own home... in this case “aka” cramper.
The government doesnt consider you homeless in the u.s unless you can prove to them their way that you live on the street. If you have any other possible way of maintaining normal sleep patterns and health youre not homeless according to them. Thats why its hard for anyone and everyone to get their foot in the door with housing cause there are alot of hoops to jump through many arent capable or willing to put up with
I love the concept and encourage those in government to find a way to help these people be independant.
Government "help" creates government dependence and it isn't free.
I approve of this. All is needed is an empty lot so people can park them and pay a little cash to do it. Homelessness will not end unless society gives people in this bad position a place to recover so the can one day be homeless no longer.

The least you can do is to Dip into your savings to feed, clothe and shelter them, and do it consistently, not just once.

Bless him, l always want to ask if these people have family? How could they let their Father or Brother or Son live like this? I know there is always another side to a life story but very sad.
these are the types of stories that the lame stream media needs to put out there!!! this man who made that shelter is not only innovative and amazing but he's a true American Patriot !!!! throughout everything bad that he's been dealt in life, he still built his own shelter from almost nothing,,,, how many people out there actually do anything about problems other than talk about them? this man deserves a GoFundMe account! this man deserves a real home!!!!!!!
Again, why is housing the homeless an issue? Between tiny houses and alternatives like this, the massive amount of foreclosed buildings, etc... It CAN be done. Just the people in power CHOOSE not to. Ya can't tell a guy 'go get a job' when he has nothing to put for an address, a phone number, and has to bring ALL his possessions with him every day.
Most of those places controlled by democrats. Shows they really don't care. Just lip service .

Keep him anonymous because once the local council hears about that they will try and find him and take his cramper away from him. Seen it happen before. Dude built little sleepouts for homeless people, can't remember where, and the city removed all of them and made the homeless go back to sleeping on the road.
It's disgusting that These people only get interviewed when they start finding solutions for themselves and not needing help from their city officials then all of a sudden they get interviews for what they just want it to be somewhere safe and warm why do you care so much now
