Homelessness is no longer just for drug users. It’s also for the working class. Those who work 40 hours a week and still can’t afford rent. You make $2000-$3000 a month and still can’t afford anything in this city. I’m even talking about those with shiny bachelors degrees. Heck even EMTs and CNAs can make $16-$20 hour and still not be able to afford housing.
Exactly I deliver groceries. It ain’t much but it’s honest work. It’s about 3-4k a month. I simply cannot qualify for even the smallest place. Cant find anything. I sleep in my car most the week and occasionally hotels to keep clean and feel like a person for a little bit. Tonight’s hotel was covered by Airbnb which was nice. Had a cancellation. It was supposed to be 340/mo (I have actually found rent that low believe it or not) and he messaged me saying it’s actually 7K a month. SEVEN THOUSAND A MONTH. For a one bed one bath place that you aren’t allowed to cook in… l can’t wait to see California real estate plummet. This is ridiculous.
Then move somewhere you can afford to live. I’d love to be living in Kauai but can’t afford it. Guess I could just park an Rv and live like a bum over there… but I have responsibilities
@@christophermedina5894 I’ve never voted for any of these fools bro. I grew up in Georgia and Alabama. And moving back soon. Common sense would be living somewhere affordable before squatting in a busted down Rv if you’re working full time and not on drugs.
Actually if you work a full time job like most of us do, it's not a problem. Was on my own in LA (Hollywood at first) at age 17. I have never been unable to pay my rent, ever. Thing is, you can't be slamming H or taking Fenty every day. It's really not that hard, as long as you are not taking deadly drugs every day.

Exactly! Greedy landlords with strict requirements would rather have a vacant apartment/houses then to rent to anyone who doesn’t have a six figure income/excellent credit or big money in the bank!
Since it is recommended that housing should only take 28% of your income, and rent and/or mortgage payments are $3,000 A month that means a person or a couple needs to make over $10,000 a month. There's not a lot of jobs that pays that much That's $65 an hour or better!
Hey, my landlord told me last week he wants the rent unchanged due to my payment stability and the way I take care of his property. Yesterday got the message from him, that he rethink the case and wants 20% more. Now I understand how Europe history developed in late '30s.

Well when rent is so freaking high, what else are people supposed to do? Not saying it’s right but some people would rather do this than give up virtually their entire paycheck just to get stuck in a vicious cycle.
I don't see a problem with people living in a motor-home, but I DO see a real problem with the mess outside them. Keep the vehicle and surrounding area tidy, and nobody would likely bother them.
We all pay or have paid local and state taxes for the very same "public streets" you refer to. I personally paid taxes my entire working adult life and didn't even use "public streets" for overnight parking at my prior residences. Simply put, it's not as if someone is erecting a permanent structure on some vacant public space an claiming it as their own. IMHO, it deserves a bit more insightful thought before we automatically claim someone is "exploiting" public streets/areas.
There's something very wrong when someone who's working 40hrs a week can't afford rent. Transitional housing is only a temporary solution and wouldn't allow a senior like her to keep her dog. Dogs/cats are very important to and provide companionship to these people.

The many empty warehouses/office buildings in California will be having to pay their mortgage in 2 years, if the office space is used or not, as some companies haven’t been paying since the pandemic 2022, but mortgage rents are collected every few years, sometimes with late fees attached. If the companies can’t pay they’re moved out, yet those empty buildings could be converted to studios/apartments by the government/banks who repossess them

I have a caravan totally redone so you can live in it year round. Though I have an apartment I realized years ago if you have one major expensive drawback and it is usually medical I am in trouble so I bought this van and I slowly fixed it up for an elderly woman the last thirteen years after my husband passed away. I knew the day would come that I will not be able to afford an apartment, medicine and food at the same time. It is sad that you work your whole life for what? A caravan, smh. I started working at twelve and my husband at ten, now in my late fifties and my husband gone I decided to travel around the USA and Canada the day after I retire. America where no one cares until your in the same boat. We are one paycheck from the street and the things the politicians want you to care about isn't paying the bills or putting a roof over your head nor food on the table. I don't care about woke, hunter's laptop, trump, biden, or who hates who for whatever reason their grey cells get all affronted about. I do care about people who for no reason but money constraints will be homeless, I know a few that you would never believe that are as of right now without a home. I am thankful I planned ahead and if something happens to me at least someone in my family will have a use for it.
Very true, people have to move often here in California because the landlords raise the rent when the lease is up $200 to $400 sometimes more! People don’t often get big enough income raises every year to afford all the increases from food to housing, etcetera. Others move often because the roommates move out or they divorce/spouse dies
My thoughts exactly! Then you’re stuck living with a roommate who thinks they’re your parents. Enforcing ridiculous rules like “absolutely no noise after 10pm, or no friends over, no pets, no overnight guests, no drugs or alcohol.” Like I am already paying half your rent, why are you treating me like your prisoner?
Don’t ever become homeless here in australia! My wife and I were some years ago and had no choice but to live in our van. We were quiet, put rubbish in bins and councils moved us on or be fined. It was “the looks” all sorts of people gave us knowing our van was our home was disgraceful and disgusting. We don’t drink nor drug and we’re just chill friendly people. Seemed nobody including councils wanted us anywhere and my question to this day remains “where to you want homeless people to be then huh!” Treating your fellow man like s**t no matter what their circumstances says everything about the people treating you like that. Be nice and kind to everyone everywhere in this life because you just don’t know what someone’s going through.

There are so many empty buildings in Los Angeles...old strip malls etc.. they could turn them into multiple studio apartments so at least people would have a shower and toilet. There is an answer to this crisis of homelessness...of course there are deep problems...but living as humans is the first response!
Good point. No doubt your garage could house a whole family. Time for you to hire a couple carpenters and start spending your money on the conversion- make sure you do absolutely everything up to code to avoid any potential lawsuits from your tenants. While you are waiting on the permits (good luck on that BTW), you should tell your home insurance company about your plans- they will have some adjustments to make on your premium. You will want to look into how this income will affect your tax returns, but of course if you give it to people for free that probably wont be an issue. Also, you probably should also read up about squatters rights in CA- you'll also want to secure a lawyer or two for some point down the road just in case. Thanks for stepping up to the plate and not being a NIMBY.
It’s not that easy.. It costs almost as much money as building something new from the ground up to make these places work. The biggest issue with retrofitting old commercial buildings is they weren’t designed for all the plumbing that would be needed. They weren’t built to code for residential use.. and there’s too much red tape politically. You’d have to get the zoning changed as well, and the citizens near those areas would oppose it. Everybody wants to solve homelessness, but nobody wants them near where they live. It’s a no win situation.
IMHO, the billions being appropriated to "fight the homeless crisis" in California, are at best misused. There are numerous variables that surround the general idea of 'homelessness", so I'll stick to this specific "issue" of RV's being used for housing. I can't imagine it would take much of an investment for LA county to establish a trailer park of sorts, for those who have found hard times and have turned to an RV for their temporary or even permanent residence. IMHO, those who reside in an RV have done so by necessity and by choice. I happen to be one in that group of people. How I got here is too long to get into. Why I have chosen my RV as home is simply because its was my best option to support myself and maintain an avenue to regain the financial stability I once had before I fell into difficult times. I would like to think many are similar to my situation. I do not litter the streets as if its my personal garbage can, I dont hijack public utilities for my personal use, I dont commit crimes against others, nor do I resort to theft for any reason. I'm not confortable by no means, but everyone goes through difficult times and its how we choose to confront it that matters . I don't believe its a "one size fits all" solution for "homelessness" nor is it a good use of effort and resources for a city or county to criminalize or make it more difficult for those who are obviously doing what they can to rise up from their situation.
I completely agree with you. Large, city owned vacant lots or abandoned areas, small RV’s at no cost, 24hr security. Water, electric, showers, washers & dryers, counseling, social workers, etc. I’m completely serious. LA County has wasted close to ONE BILLION $$ on nonsense.
It’s all about the kooky laws and loopholes. The affordable housing builders are in on the program. They want this reality to continue, real estate sector get taxed big time but if they use tiny fraction of their buildings - unadvertised - as “affordable home” they end up making far much more income.
My friend and her husband needed to rent for three months and found a studio apartment for $3000, a month. Outrageous. Have an RV but everywhere they checked could only stay 10 days at a time....if they could even find available space.

What people don’t understand is that many of these ‘homeless’ people are paying the same amount for those RVs as rent costs for apartments. No one is renting to a homeless person because of the well intentioned, yet flawed legislation that makes it SO difficult to evict here.. I offered 3 months rent plus deposit for a place they just would not rent to me because of my credit which was only low from student loans and as an artist with difficult to prove/inconsistent income I got stuck in a cycle of way more expensive subleases. We need affordable houses but more than that we need landlords to actually rent to people with less than a 700 credit score. These RVs are a symptom of this public health emergency, not the cause.
Real issue outside of said discrimination against the homeless, is that there is not one tow company wants to start a contract with the city towing RVs because no wants to lease a lot to big enough to impound those rigs, or dispose of them....
There doesn't need to be more people shoved off land, and or shoved out of their homes. I'm glad to hear they aren't willing to do such caustic things to such unlucky folks.

Inflation is not making the rent prices what they are. And rent is the biggest issue for people becoming homeless. Our leaders caused this problem of homelessness --- they don't care about people. They see them all around - living under freeways, families living in parks, encampments on the same streets as City Hall in downtown Los Angeles - and they "don't see a thing." They keep telling us they're spending $$$$$$$$$$$ to help the homeless - but the problems keep getting worse. Where should people live? Where should they go? How could they function?
LA spends 3 billion, with a b, dollars a year on the homeless. Clearly no amount of money is going to solve a problem while the people living it are content to do so. When getting drugs means more to them than having shelter and food, there really is nothing you can do to change that.
@@nobodyspecial4702 Where did that $3 Billion go? Not to help the homeless, I'm sure. Not everyone is on drugs, alcohol or mentally unstable. Is the govt trying to stop the flow of drugs into America esp. Fentanyl - NO!!! Many people are working - and many can't work because of ill health, age, alone with no family or bad circumstances. Our govt likes this problem - they help many others who aren't deserving - and that includes Big Businesses.
My friend works at McDonald's on Lincoln and can't afford an apartment. He rents an RV for $600 now. He was in his minivan before. He's safe and happy with his dog. Give him a big raise, lower rental costs and you guys won't have this issue anymore. Have you forgotten these people are part of your community too?
Unless you're the manager, you're not suppose to earn living wage working at McD. Homes should be for living and not as an investment. I issue in the last two decades are people who should not qualify to buy a 2nd home are approved to buy one and now they have to have renters pay their mortgage. If you force to drop rent, this will put these people in bankruptcy. This is the reason why rent will not go down anymore unless these 2nd, 3rd, 4th and even 5th homeowners lose their homes.
@KennyWagnon-jo5et you don't understand the severity until something bad happens. One of the tenants commits a crime or rape inside the mobile homes. no citizens or cops want mobile drug homes with fentanyl exposure.
That's nice. No more tents, just streets filled with RVs 🤣. That will look beautiful. LA the RV capitol of the world. I wonder if Robin Williams would approve 🤔?
These vanlords are trying to find solutions that are affordable, I salute them. Just gotta make it safer and more hygenic, wealthy people who want to make a change should work with this vanlord, and make RV parks that are affordable! 👍
If you can't take care of yourself, no sane person would get an animal. Dogs need to go to the vet. They get sick, need vaccinations and sometimes good.
Build a lot more low income housing, and renovate empties homes for use. Even though many snobs opposed this in their neighborhoods, I think it's still better than having people in the streets or living in a van or camper. We'd see our neighborhoods improve and tax dollars at work helping others instead of going overseas for political/destructive wars
There were 22,000 patients in mental hospitals in California in 1966. Then Ronald Reagan became Governor and over the next 8 years, he kicked them to the streets. In 1980, Reagan became President and took his CALIF model to the other 49 States. This is the start point. Add in the Bush created war of 1991, plus 2003 and the homeless problem grew. 200,000 or more of these persons belong in an institution. Republican lawmakers prefer to let First Responders deal with the issues. The numbers will grow.
So the plan is to legalize Vanlords renting out RVs parked on city streets????? How about the city building RV parks with proper sewer, water and electricity and rent the spaces out themselves? Maybe if the city became landlords they'd understand the problems more. Homeless polluting public streets is not the answer.

Better than being on the street in a tent.
Not if there’s 20 RVs parked in front of your home, on your street, affecting you and your property values and your safety.
I have sooo much respect for that guy who rents out RVs to ppl. I need to get his info just in case I become homeless….. inflation is real yall! 🤦🏽♀️
Inflation is not making the rent prices what they are. And rent is the biggest issue for people becoming homeless.
Corporations are buying up the houses, they’re buying apartment complexes and charging the highest amount they can.
It’s just good ol fashioned capitalism. Which is good for a lot of things, but it will always hurt the people at the bottom the most.
He’s my friend I work with him. We’re always available and can work with you. Weekly or monthly.
I left almost a decade ago. I had to be making 3x the rent in order to stay in my apartment, and I made groceries work, had my utilities paid, but for nothing else. And then getting burglarized and all valuables being taken was the last straw. Cops showed up 14 hours later. 🤦🏾
Exactly, as if the high exorbitant rents weren’t enough, criminals are marking the buildings/units they intend on committing theft/burglary, sometimes it’s flyers left in cars/doors or stickers/spray paint. It’s beyond unnerving that renters can’t live with peace of mind, and sometimes have to sleep with one eye open!

So the city is going to take the RVs away and replace it with...what? We're just going to see even more messy encampments springing up. Nobody is fixing the problem, they're just trying to move it.

They will replace it with tax EXEMPT churches and then more people can get wealthy while the homeless jump off bridges. Murica

The RV is a home with all the services of a little apartment or house if they have good generators but those batteries are expensive to replace. Some choose to liv in an RV to save money/afford nutritious food, etcetera.

Normal landlords have to deal with eviction moratoriums and rent control. Meanwhile this black market is exempt so prices are low. As soon as the city regulates the vans the cost will go up and van rent prices will go up.
City subsidizes the taxes, partial expenses. Tenants can volunteer at whatever they can do. They get some self esteem back.. the more hours volunteered the more the rent drops. They keep telling us they're spending $$$$$$$$$$$ to help the homeless - but the problems keep getting worse.
