This man was a substitute teacher for me in high school chemistry several times. He is a kind man who has never shied away from this horrible situation. He kept his name and dealt with it all head on. Could have changed his name and moved across the country, but he didn’t. I pray for this guy often, he’s been through too much.

Lionel is such a commendable father. He has never once stopped loving his son, despite everything. It never meant he excused Jeff, but he loved him unconditionally and wanted to repair what he could with what was left of his son until 1994. If you look at his book, A Father's Story, and what he was saying back in the 90s, he's always asked what he could have done or tried to better understand why things went the way they did, the affect /he/ had on Jeff. He's always held himself to some responsibility for what Jeff turned into.
It's heartbreaking. Lionel never stopped caring and he always tried the best he could. He just never knew the extent of the damage going on with Jeff, even early on, nor how to help him and I think he carries that weight with him still. God bless him.

It can be argued that it was his parents' troubling marriage and neglect that led to Jeff being an alcoholic as a teen, leading to all the needing somebody to stay by his side, not really knowing if he was worth loving.
