I worked on this film as one of the Purple Crewmembers on the aircraft carrier. The carrier was built of wood on the cliff bluff in Palos Verdes, CA at the old Marineland that had just closed. The planes on the carrier were fake and could be pushed around easily. I worked on the sequel as a prisoner of war and it was funny too. Lloyd Bridges who was on ""Airplane" sniffing glue etc was the admiral in this film and was the President in the sequel "Hot Shots Part Deux".
You guys didn't recognize Lloyd Bridges who played the Admiral who also had to quit smoking drinking and sniffing glue in airplane? He was one of your favorite characters then too. Also Lloyd Bridges whose Sons include Jeff Bridges Beau Bridges and Garrett Bridges
Guys the dentist scene at the end was from a movie called MARATHON MAN with Dustin Hoffman - a classic 70's action thriller - when Topper spoke Native American, it was really the names of Michael Jackson's family - great review as usual guys ✌
As with the movie Airplane, a lot of the humor is missed because of references to prior movies. I still laugh thinking of reaction videos missing the Yuban coffee commercial spoof in that earlier movie.
For the Indian parts, you'd have had to see Kevin Costner's "Dances with Wolves" for the reference. And the joke about him carrying her up the stairs was a reference to "Gone with the Wind."
@@sebswede9005 "More bodies than ROBOCOP..." Boy, when that guy isn't crossing Jordans or running a corporation that makes robotic police officers, he's out there in jungles, breaking the 4th wall with his true passions! LOL

Boxing scene referenced Don King who many believed fixed hi fights as well as the Mike Tyson championship fights which, at the time, tended to end early in the first round.
10:50 On the topic of "I've never landed a plane in my life" AND "being the commander of an airforce operation ... you should look into the *Major General's Song* ... because "incompetence being promoted to high rank" is quite an old tradition in some places. The Wikipedia entry has all the explanations for the lyrics. P.S.: There is also a video by "Mentour Pilot", which explains to you how to land a big passenger airliner (with the help of automated systems) ... ~13 steps ... you wont ever get to do that though, because even if the pilots are incapacitated ... no one is going to get through the door.
Hot Shots! is parody of The fancy flying block buster summer flick of 1985 TOP GUN. Jon Cryer and Charlie Sheen much much later in their careers, reunited and starred in the sit com Two and a Half Men. Yes these are the same type of jokes like Airplane! Top Secret! had done.
I'm sure someone else has mentioned it by now but the second bit from the musical part of the film (where Ramada wears that big red dress) is a reference to the infamous staircase scene from Gone With The Wind
The "love scene" where he cooks breakfast on her was spoofing 9 1/2 weeks, a famous/infamous "sexy" film from the 80s with Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke.
i was hoping with the Top Gun sequel and people (re)discovering that movie, some would find of stumble on to this one ....i knew most would enjoy it, they just needed to find it
Yo listen up! I subscribe to many reactors. None tickle my old bones as much as Cam and Zay. Hell, Cam and Zay are now even showing up on my spell check. That has to say something. If you are watching these two and are not subscribed then what the hell? Look at it this way. You can't angrily un-subscribe if you don't subscribe. I don't normally go into a movie theater and pay for a ticket only to turn and watch the audience reactions to the movie, but I would if these two were in the audience. SUBSCRIBE! please.
Have you guys seen the Leslie Neilsen spoof comedy, "Repossessed," where he plays the elder priest, in the spoof sequel to "The Exorcist," wherein Linda Blair reprises her role as "Regan?" @CamAndZay, listen to me. If not, you're missing out. Talkin; J.J.Abrams, have you guys watched, "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer?" If not, WHY NOT?!?!
When I had just started puberty,y parents brought me to that movie not knowing what was in it. As the movie progressed an my religious mom kept saying "Oh my" I couldn't sink low enough in my chair. I wished I could have sat anywhere else in the theater than next to my mother. My father on the other hand, almost needed resuscitation from laughing so hard. Amazingly, we sat through the entire movie. On the way home all I could do was stare out the window and try not to considerate on my ever growing other situation. I ran up to my room.
You're missing so many cultural references. Around @27:00, the things the Chief are saying are the names of members of "The Jackson Five," and since you won't know who they were, that was the sibling group that included baby sibling, Michael Jackson. You may have heard of him. And his younger sister, Janet. Every time the people are "speaking a foreign language," they are throwing cultural references That includes the previous time they showed Charlie with the Natives. If you look up the words they are saying, you will REALLY be glad you did.
Much of the first nations "words" were just listing the names of the Jacksons (as in Micheal Jackson's brothers). Dances With Wolves came out about 10 years after this. Love watching comedies with you two. Your laughter makes me laugh.
hile some of the visual and running gags (eg people repeatedly sitting on a little dog) are great, for me it was Lloyd Bridges that sold this movie for me. His delivery and reactions come so naturally yet are totally divorced from reality in a way that only a highly skilled actor could pull off. The world is a poorer place without Lloyd and his Airplane! costar Leslie Nielsen.
I worked on this film as one of the Purple Crewmembers on the aircraft carrier. The carrier was built of wood on the cliff bluff in Palos Verdes, CA at the old Marineland that had just closed. >fake planes
So accurate to actual IRL US army. Amazing attention to detail.
@@KawayolnyoWhy would the Army have aircraft carriers?
That must have been a cool experience both times that's awesome!! Thanks for sharing.
Part Deux is definitely worth watching. Somehow Lloyd Bridges is even funnier in the sequel.
Seconded.
I agree, it is better than the first and one of my favourite movies due to more action and spoofing of movies like Commando/Rambo.

The staircase scene was spoofing _Gone With the Wind_ . The dentist chair scene at the end was from _Marathon Man_ .
In case you didn't notice, the actor who is Topper's nemesis was Robin Hood in "Men in Tights".

The words that aren't Jackson family members are cities and place names in Minnesota.
As with the movie Airplane, a lot of the humor is missed because of references to prior movies. I still laugh thinking of reaction videos missing the Yuban coffee commercial spoof in that earlier movie.
This movie was HUGE when it came out! Getting to see the mostly serious dramatic actor break loose like this was so awesome amd hilarious!!
Idk if anyone has mentioned it but the actor who plays Topper's dad voices TARS in Interstellar.
For the Indian parts, you'd have had to see Kevin Costner's "Dances with Wolves" for the reference. And the joke about him carrying her up the stairs was a reference to "Gone with the Wind."

He's basically Joe Biden.
The chihuahua bark makes me crack up every time, I don't know why! Hot Shots is one of my favorite comedies, thanks so much for your reaction :)
@26:05 Even in 1991, this reference to Marathon Man (1976) was a bit obscure.
"God, I love a good funeral." 😂

the three best parody series of those years: naked gun, scary movie, and hot shots!I will never get tired of them!
