Hot Shots is in the Naked Gun category with the outright absurdity + deadpan delivery played completely straight. Lloyd Bridges and Leslie Nielsen were outstanding at it!
That actors name is Lloyd Bridges & to us older folks he's considered one of the great actors of our generation. Although the shocker for us was, Lloyd Bridges was known for dramatic work. We didn't know he could do comedy. (There were several dramatic actors dropped in to shock us, it worked) & Both actors, Beau & Jeff Bridges are his sons. The sons did a film together called "The Fabulous Baker Boys" w/Michelle Pfeiffer. 👍
Back when parodies didn't pander to the audience, but rather let the jokes come at a breakneck speed and tested your ability to keep up. I love that style! 😀
On the channel 'Movie Munchies' (Korean gals) they thought the prisoners in Shawshank were cheering about the bus arriving with Andy was because they were getting new friends. 😂 They are so wholesome.
Top Secret is the underrated ZAZ movie with a devoted cult following. It is Val Kilmer’s film debut and also features Omar Sharif and Peter Cushing. It’s a Cold War spy movie spoof. A major plot point requires a passing familiarity with Blue Lagoon, otherwise it pretty much stands on its own.
The guy getting hit offscreen with the pool cue was like a ten minute laugh for me in the theater. It's stayed with me ever since. I like Hot Shots: Part Deux. I miss funny spoof movies.
'92 in the Navy we had a helicopter attached to our ship, the call sign was Red Specter. We'd refer to the crewmembers personally as Scarlet Sphincter. Good humored fun. If you enjoy Val Kilmer in a equally funny movie, check out 1984's Top Secret!
Admiral Benson comes back and goes even harder with the stupidity in Part Deux. Sadam also somehow comes back, and they go mano a mano in one of the spoofiest fight scenes ever filmed.
Hot Shots was one of the movies that nurtured my sense of humor. It's been over 30 years and I still laugh at them like I did the first time. Thanks, guys. It was nice to watch again and see your heartfelt reactions.
Same here man, My earliest memory of a comedy is one of the police academy movies (citizens on patrol). Followed closely by SpaceBalls. 3 or so years later I found Hot shots, naked gun 33 1/3 was just out in cinema and Top Secret borrowed from family friend, I would have been 12 or 13 by that time. Absolutely gave me my sense of humor I have today thats for sure.
That old guy from “Airplane” was Lloyd Bridges, Jeff and Beau Bridges father. A star in his own right, he had his own series, Sea Hunt, and appeared in movies.
Lloyd Bridges is hilarious every time he's given a comedy script. His cameo in Joe VS the Volcano is as breath-stealing from laughter as his scenes in this. :D
I love the fact that the call signs of the pilots in this move are actually closer to real life accurate than Top Gun. In the actual Air Force/Navy, the callsigns are almost always inside jokes that make fun of the pilots. They would get something like "Polka Dot" if they got caught in a picture wearing a polka-dotted thong.
The welding could also have been a reference to the finale of "An Officer and a Gentleman," where Debra Winger is welding, and Richard Gere shows up in his dress whites.
Lloyd Bridges father to Jeff and Beau Bridges, both are also amazing actors. Also grandfather to Jordan Bridges who played in Rizzoli and Isles. A very talented family. ❤
This movie takes aim not only at Top Gun but also a lot of other movies from the 80s and early 90s. The hut scene in the beginning was from the movie Dances with Wolves. The piano singing scene was from the movie The Fabulous Baker Boys which ironically stars Lloyd Bridges 2 sons Beau and Jeff Bridges. The food sex scene is from the movie 9 1/2 Weeks. A few more I may have missed but you’ll get the jokes better if you’ve seen those other movies. Hot Shots 2 takes aim at other movies too but I won’t spoil that one for you guys
@@NiceDudeMovieNight I watched that later and I must say Part Deux will always be special for me as that's the one I had a VHS of growing up. The best part about these movies are, as you mention, Old Serious Men playing complete buffoons. Lloyd Bridges, Leslie Nielsen and George Gaynes (to some extent) are playing these characters like it's a straight up drama and the best part about the movies of that nobody looks like they try to be intentionally funny.
I can't imagine having the opportunity to act in a parody this crazy. Of course, you'd need the right acting chops, but being able to act out such weird and fun scenes in a movie that doesn't take itself seriously would be a blast.
Lloyd Bridges, who played Admiral Benson, was a terrific serious actor (I remember him in the very successful tv show Sea Hunt) and later in his career reinvented himself as a great comedic actor in movies like “Hot Shots” and “Airplane”. So talented. He is the father of Beau Bridges and Jeff Bridges (two great actors in their own right). RIP, Mr. Bridges. Thank you for sharing your talents with the world. 😊
The "sensual singing on the piano" is a parody of The Fabulous Baker Boys (a movie of the time with Jeff Bridges and his brother Beau Bridgers - incidentally their father plays Admiral Benson here). The "sex involving food stuff" scene is a parody of 9 1/2 weeks, a very famous hit movie from the late 80s, with Mickey Rourke (then a hearthtrob) and Kim Bassinger (then considered the ultimate Hollywood bombshell). And of course Admiral Benson is a parody of 2021-2023 era president Joe Biden.
@@Danspy501st Haha, no worries! I’m in the U.S. and I couldn’t get the similarity to President Biden out of my head. It’s sort of funny but embarrassing.

Adding my vote for Down Periscope. It's Kelsey Grammer's first big screen showing (before then he'd been only on TV), and it's a brilliant ensemble comedy.

A few missed jokes: they "split the pole" as he went under a ladder, the S.S. ESSESS, taking a bazooka round... at Little Big Horn. You gotta stay on your toes. They come at you quick and heavy. I hope y'all check out part deux.
The actor is Lloyd Bridges. He is the father of Jeff Bridges (Big Lebowski, Tron) and Beau Bridges. The brothers made a film, "The Fabulous Baker Boys" which is spoofed in Hot Shots with the piano singing scene.
hELL YEAH! was one of my favourite films when i was young even when i had no idea what top gun was and only watched it with my native language dub! as always im gonna learn a lot and probably wake up my cat laughing!
Top Gun: lets show off what fighter pilots can do... Hot shots: [parodies Top Gun by showing plane doing cartwheels] Top Gun 2: that's a cool idea. Let's do that.
Not only John Cryer but also Ryan Stiles (Dr Herb Melnick on two and a half men) was playing in hot shots that is where all met each other and later on went to play on two and a half men together.
9:22 Fun fact: The main aircraft in the film is the Folland Gnat. It’s a trainer aircraft from Great Britain. Unlike many other aircraft at the time, the Gnat was small and cheap.
The sitting on the dog i think is the best joke in all of the movie. Like he said, someone getting hit off screen will always be funny. To me, the dog reminds me of the cat that screams off screen. Classic humor and completely innocent. They picked the perfect bark for that dog too. I swear I could watch this movie thousands of times and laugh at something every time. Timeless movie.
The olive in the belly button trick is supposedly a mediterranean thing - and the actress claimed (sarcastically?) that she only got the part because no other actress could do it. Also, the cooking eggs and bacon on her belly was actually talked about a lot by the media, and the props team revealed the ceramic stovetop they made to do it.
I never heard of this movie before. But as soon as I realized it had the same humour as Airplane, I knew I had to watch it. It’s also on Disney+ alongside the sequel. My brother and I laughed so much. I basically stopped watching this video, just to watch the movie.
