One of the greatest post-hardcore songs of the late 90's/early 2000's. Back when nu-metal was all over the place and new age emo was kicking off it was great to hear bands like Poison the Well doing, essentially love songs in a heavy/hard manor. They filled a need for people that loved hard music but didn't care for the classic metal lyrical themes, or people who enjoyed the lyrics of emo but found the music too soft.

This was my highschool anthem. To like this, you gotta be emotionally disturbed but have no understanding of the emotions yet. It's dark as fuck and an outlet for those not understood, writhing, emotions and feelings. These days I understand how fucked up shit was when I was coming of age so These old songs are pure nostalgia These days.

Poison the well used to be my shit! Love these guys. They epitomized my teenage angst

What a song. Absolute peak of that particular era of metalcore; subtle textures, lyrics that really transcended genre tropes and expressed genuine sentiment, the clearest dry crashing production (on CD, at least), phenomenal live shows. Of course it's defined more by rhythm than melody, hardcore, especially from this era, is dance music.
Basically an all time classic love song regardless of genre.

This very song coined a whole new generation of hardcore music songwriting. If you don't like it, fair enough. But don't go smarty ass all over it.

Seems the composer needs to do some research..PTW intention from the beginning was to set itself apart from it's counter parts..they are true trend setters and pioneers in their genre

This band is the antithesis of The Smiths. I don't know if that was their intention but The Smiths sing about demented things to pretty music and Poison the Well sings about pretty things to demented music.
    I like them both 🤗

Ha, listening to hardcore critically and picking it apart is like touching starry starry night with your eyes closed. You might get something from the texture of the paint but you are not really understanding what is in front of you. By clearly stating that this is not your cup of tea it leads me to think that you probably don’t understand the genre as a whole. Hardcore has always been more of a musical style that is better experienced than listened to. When listening to it think of it as more of a blueprint to prepare your for the live show. Learn the lyrics and breakdowns and you will know how to dance and what to yell when you grab the mic. Interesting take on it none the less.

It's been 2 year since I did this video and I've learned a LOT about understanding more textural, rhythmic music. You're spot on about it being something that you're supposed to feel and that I was overthinking it.

Ahh man i thought you'd like this one. Still trying to find "your cup of tea" love the breakdown of the song. This song is 15yrs old and still holds up in the hardcore/punk scene.
Maybe try Shai Hulud any song from the 'That Within Blood' album the style of singing is similar to Poison the Well but the band is more technical

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  4 роки тому +3

To be fair, I don't think I have a particular style of music that I enjoy so it's difficult even for me to know if I'll enjoy a song based on criteria alone. I've heard songs that I really should have enjoyed as they ticked all of the boxes of my favorite aspects of music and ended up disliking them. I've also fallen in love with simplistic pop songs, which are the exact opposite of what I tend to enjoy. It's all a crapshoot honestly. Even my sister has a difficult time with song suggestions. She knows me really well and still only has a ~60% track record.

@@CriticalReactions This was like 1999/2000 ptw they were very raw still. Their album You Come Before You or beyond to me is much more impressive, and representative of who they are.

One of the most prolific progressive metal bands is Opeth, to the point where someone will hear a song and say it's "Opeth like" as if they are their own gender. I'd like to hear your thoughts on Opeth - The Leper Affinity.

I first heard PTW right when they came out with Opposite of December in 1999 and it was amazing at the time. Their style at the time was unlike anything in the metalcore scene, especially their lyrics. It’s seen as a true classic album in the genre today.

Anything from the album "You Come Before You" is a lot better. Especially "Apathy is a Cold Body". Nerdy is an older song of theirs (even for an older band). They definitely get better in You Come Before You. I would encourage you to check out that album. There are more progressive elements and moody soundscapes. Seriously like nothing else other people were doing

Randomly coming across this vid in 2024. This album was a mess. I distinctly remember interviews in guitar magazines egregious they released Tear From the Red where they talked about instruments not necessarily being in tune, having no concept of music theory, and neither of those things mattering one bit during the recording of The Opposite of December. We all still loved it.

Bro,your over analysing hardcore and what it stands for and what it means..
Hardcore bands aren't straight outta music college..
They play and write honest music with emotion driven lyrics, they don't care about being 100% perfect cause that's not what it's about..
Not dissing you at all but if ya wanna analyse how you do then listen to radioed for perfection not hardcore
