Maybe I have a tip fot you...... I started making my own vanilla extract for my wife. It is so easy but it will take paitence. Take 4 whole vanilla beans and cut them in half. Slice them down the middle and open them up to expose the bean inside. Put them into a 1 pint canning jar and fill the Jar with rum. I used the kraken to get a dark vanilla. It needs to sit on a shelf for a year and periodically pick it up and shake it. Yep that's a long time to wait but when you open that jar and use it as you did here you will never buy that from a store again. You can use vodka as well but I like the rum.
@@RobsHomeBar That's what I thought. I started two pint jars with vodka and one pint jar with Kraken dark rum. It is black now and the vodka jars are a deep amber brown. They each were started in Decenber so we have a while to go but I have been told you can start using it in 6 months so my wife more than likely will start using one in July I suppose which would be 7 months.
I appreciate this video because like you said it is hard to find bottles. I didn't know how easy it was to make. I have been wanting to make a snow ball so this will help! Cheers Rob!
Just came back from the UK. While there we bought 3 bottles for about 38 GBP. It's what we used to have around christmas growing up but we had some early since I was coming back to California. Looked online to see if I could buy some here, $15 plus about $50 shipping lol. Ridiculous. could get 4 or 5 bottles back home. Think I'm going to make this, thanks for the inspiration. Mine will be without ice though lol.
That looks like some really good Advocaat.>.it looks as good as Warninks…which is the brand we used to use. I believe it is pronounced advocar, could be wrong. In the 70s I grew up with snowballs at christmas, back then we used lemonade(sprite) too but to make it extra special instead of lemonade we used Babycham which is a sparkling Perry drink. Not sure if it’s still made. Also we added a dash of orange cordial as well as the lime ..and garnish with a cherry. Can’t wait to try this recipe, thanks very much for putting it up. Just subscribed!
@@RobsHomeBar thanks for letting me know I’ll see if I can get there! I was just pondering…progressing with the babycham idea…to make it even more special I suppose champagne would be perfect. I was a Barman for about 13 years in Yorkshire where snowballs were very popular and have made my fair share of these….but have only just thought of the champagne!…or maybe I’m remembering the idea of it. Don’t get old mate..the memory starts to play tricks! Keep up the great work. Prosecco might be a good idea too…definitely just thought of that!
oh that's too bad, I am in Ottawa and the Metro grocery chain does carry. It's just as good with plain Sprite! ... but experiment with wahtever sodas you have available :)
I can remember my mum making this but the process involved whole eggs sitting in a bowl with halves of lemons over the eggs and turning daily until the shell dissolved.
Hi Rob, I stumbled on your video while looking for Warninks Advocaat at LCBO Can you comment on the taste difference between your DIY creation and Warnink's brand.
Anyone know how to covert this regular Advocaat recipe to a Cherry Advocaat instead. A favourite at Christmas time but no longer available here in Australia
@@NicoleP1100 VOK haven’t done the Cherry Advocaat for a few years now. I have emailed them direct and they confirmed no longer a product they manufacturer. Only Cherry Brandy. There are a few comments on Dan’s page to bring it back. I found this recipe last year and seems fairly close if anyone else wants it. Cherry Advocaat Recipe... Ingredients: 4 large or 6 small eggs. 1 x teaspoon Vanilla extract. 1 x 400g tin of Condensed Milk. 1 x teaspoon of Grenadine or Cherry Essence. 1 x cup (250ml) Cherry liqueur or Cherry Brandy (Luxardo Maraschino Originale gives most authentic VOK comparison) Method: Place all ingredients in a jug and blend for 1min until creamy Bottle and allow to stand for 3 days. Makes 800ml
Recipe says 1 month. Last year I made it mid December and it lasted until end of January. I just made my batch of Advocaat this weekend. I fully expect it should last until after the holidays. That said, I always check it before using.. making sure there’s no visible mold and it doesn’t smell off
You can use the banana peels to make an oleo. I’ve done that to use in syrup, nice banana flavor. I’ve tried it with both regular white sugar and then also brew sugar with a little cinnamon which Mr it kind of like a banana bread syrup.
I think that all over Europe the english word "lemonade" is basically any kind of soda. We don't use the word soda, it's never really tought to us in school. Also we really don't have or use your kind of "lemonade", at least here in Finland. (I realize this is an older video, was looking for advocaat recipe...)
Impressive, but such a waist of the lovely creamy Advocaat. You can consume it also in the following Two table spoons Greek yoghurt Just poor over the Advocaat til it lightly covers the yoghurt Top off with whipped cream.(home whipped is the best) Enjoy

In the UK, our snowballs literally consist of just Advocaat, lime cordial and lemonade (that’s fizzy lemonade, similar to Sprite).
Haha yea that always confuses me when recipes call for lemonade 😂🤦♂️ …it is uk lemonade or us lemonade?? LOL
@@RobsHomeBar Depends of your watching football or not ;)
Don't forget the Cocktail Cherry :)
you never put lime I it ruins it.. or ice.. proper snowball is just advocat lemonade and a cherry on a stick
I’ve always had it served with lime in it in the UK.
I'll make 10 whiskey sours with those leftovers. Great job man!

It’s creamier and thicker and a fresher custard taste… that said, the store bought brands are also great!
I actually just uploaded a new video: 7 cocktails with a advocaat! Made a new batch just a few weeks ago!
I’ve never seen the Warnink’s advocaat at lcbo but they do sell Bol’s advocaat and it’s decent
Can i know after making this how long can store it (shelf life)?
Technically a month in the fridge however I’ve had mine last up to 5 months+ no problem.. it does require a good shake if kept longer though
