  • Installing cleated v-bar tire chains on my flatbed plow truck. These chains have v-bar cleats to provide extra rugged traction. I ordered these chains from Autozone after getting stuck a few times plowing. These rugged chains have worked fantastic.

    Just an FYI that I use. De-inflate the tires. Put your chains on, then re-inflate the tires, and I can get them really tight...

    Cam hooks should always be placed on the outside, the simple hook is used on the back side

    Thanks for the video!! Everyone online only shows installing with the multiple cams on the outside. My chains are just like yours and I can ignore the fact that you put the cam on the inside of the tire. It still helped me!!!

    They were a great work farm tread tire. 😁

    It’s interesting that people keep commenting on the video about how to put the cam locks on the outside. He said at the beginning of the video that this was the way HE did his chain and it may not be the right way.

    Once again, they are backwards. This way forces you to lay down in the snow and crawl under your vehicle to do the final adjustment. I grew up here in western Montana and MAYBE once I had a nice warm concrete floor with a jack to lift your vehicle. This is dreamland.

    The cam goes on the out side of the tire, the chain instructions even says so. I have two four wheel drive trucks and I live at 3400 feet in the mountains of Emida, Idaho. I will chain the plow truck , both axels and my go to town truck, both axels until I get to the pavement. It would be a nightmare to put the cam on the inside especially since you can’t see it. I also use v bar, great traction, kicks some serious ass!

    Thank you for this video even though it is dated by five years I wish I had seen it first I noticed that you do not put chains on the front four-wheel-drive tires … I did and I ruined my shafts on both left and right sides and shattered the u- joints. Within 48 hours I had icy conditions then wet snow conditions and finally light fluffy stuff conditions and I was out of commission on a brand new 4x4 vehicle that was bulletproof. 3 different mechanics from three different shops All said the same thing by adding Chains or low four-wheel-drive. I did not allow any slippage therefore something has to give.

    I also prefer to install chains using a jack.
    I get grizzle from some people about how it is not necessary to lift the tire off the ground, which is true, but in my experience, it requires at least 3 future adjustments to get the chains tight of I don’t use a jack.

    95% of the time unless your snowed in, your going to be putting chains on on the highway or at the side of a road, theres no point in using a jack for little 4 wheeler tire chains. make sure their also tight and properlly set up for your vehicles tires, you should also never need to use bungee cords as for if your chains are tight and not damaged they will never come undone and rip off lines.

    Lay the chains on the ground, then drive on them to get them hooked up.

    • @jacuzzibusguy
      @jacuzzibusguy 3 роки тому

      While this method works, in my experience it requires multiple attempts at driving and re-tensioning to get them tight.
      Generally much more convenient to use a jack. Especially, if like this guy, you are working in a shop.

  • @N8-T
    @N8-T 11 років тому

    I see what the other guy is saying...some people air down the tire and wrap them in chains and air them back up so they are really on there. But you cant really do that outside of your shop....thats where the bungies come in.

    Does it really matter if the cam link is on the inside ? Especially if you’re leaving them on all winter. I’m asking from the U.K. where we rarely if ever need chains but am thinking of buying a set for this winter as I’m fairly convinced it’s going to be bad. Would you fit on the rear only on a 4WD truck (Hilux).

    • @phillhuddleston9445

    The video shows only theoretical information.
    The video has a big error, the adjustment hook should be placed on the outside of the wheel.
    Only a few times you will have the opportunity to place chains for ice as a precaution, you will generally drive and you will arrive at an area with snow or ice and there you will decide whether to place them or not.
    Traveling with chains requires no more than 30 km per hour.
    Placing chains on a snowy road is 1000 times more difficult, you are in height so you get tired much faster, you cool down quickly, and your hands freeze and your fingers get hard.
    Always use gloves, the chain will usually be kept greased, from the previous winter, so that it does not rust. Which is another problem.
