I didn't realize how much I missed hearing this man speak. Now I'm sitting on my bed, cross-legged and *raptured* by his every word. I don't know what part of me needed this but I'm happy I got to listen to this. How in the world people don't see this man as necessary (or men in general for that matter) is truly baffling to me. He's a brilliant mind and communicator. He makes us all better. Interesting how we commune over his words and grow collectively... Kind of like that is the root of the word communicate. The true purpose of communication, to come together in understanding. So much "communication" in today's society is not with the goal to commune at all but to serve a selfish narrative. That is part and parcel contributing to the societal concerns JP is alluding to in this talk.
Then in that case, that kind of anxiety can be replaced with hope. Remember your idealization may not be the right ideal (I do not mean because it is too high). Then remember you are who you are, you can't live life as someone else. Then be at peace and pray and hope that you will continue to reach closer and closer to the ideal, bit by bit, day by day. Then forget about it and just live life without explicit comparison with the ideal in the moment. Rather, examine your day each night before bed and allow for grace and then resolve to be even better tomorrow.
@@itspaintosee I think because of the what if. What if I fail? What if it doesn't work? What if something-another happens? What if the same thing that's happened before happens again? I'm just a peasant, but my opinion is that your brain is basically trying to ensure simplicity (maintain order) by predicting a variety of possible negative outcomes and strategizing to avoid them, and those negative outcomes are more than likely prioritized in a list from most to least likely. The irony is this process induces the anxious psychological state, which may cause things to go awry, like a self-fulfilling prophecy. In short, you can be anxious about the potential to be made anxious. If you've been seriously anxious before, you may be "anxious" to never go through that again. But since it's not possible to ensure the future beyond a 99% guarantee, you either have to learn acceptance (I've done all that I reasonably can), or the anxiety will prevent you from taking action.

Every time my life is a mess of anxiety and depression, and the usual external stimuli, like gaming and binge-watching, no longer help with keeping the chaos at bay, I feel subconciously drawn to Peterson's lectures, and it almost always makes me feel a little bit better. What he explains in this one has kinda made me understand why that is. Chaos is the multiplicity that emerges out of the collapse of the simplicity of order. The salvation from chaos is order.

I think that this is a beautiful description of anxiety and really the nature to overcoming depression. I have struggled mentally for so long and I recently have felt as though I have rediscovered myself in a way, and I mostly believe this was due to the rediscovery of what I concieve to be my purpose in life.
"Don't make a habit of pursuing things that aren't good for you." That's where willpower and self-restraint come in. I think a lot of people inherently know that falling prey to a certain temptation will send their life on a downward spiral, yet they'll indulge in it anyway to satisfy their momentary urges. And that's especially true if someone happens to be in a heightened emotional state.

All with respect and honor to be able to verbally, mentally and psychologically spar with an ethereal/wondrous and poignant individual with this much caliber! This world is in desperate NEED of a man, a soul and HUMAN like Mr. PETERSON! I adore this human ❤
2 Hours of Masterclass, packed into less than 20 minutes. You gotta re-watch his lectures multiple times to glean the full meaning and impact, because Jordan is such a deeply meaningful thinker - and sharer of his knowledge - that watching and listening to them, is often something like taking a drink of water on a hot day... from a fire hose that's wide open. 👀 In other words: to gain what is needed, you have to approach carefully, or what you deeply need, may end up overwhelming you.
Truth is I do want a job, and I do want to be taken more seriously to reach my goals, but in truth I'm freakin bored and have maxed out most knowledge they can offer me to the point if I myself attempt to seek a therapist all they tell me " I will not insult your intelligence telling you what you already know"... Dr. Peterson has opened doors from day one to expand my knowledge, sparking a whole new level... I want to know more of what he has to offer. I admit, I'm looking up. And because I'm walking into uncharted waters, it gives me a lot of anxiety, feeling brand new.
Maybe you are not listening because you think you already have it figured out, some of the time people will say things like "I wouldnt want to insult your intelligence because you already know this" because A they are being sarcastic or B they do not want to stir up your ego to the point you are no longer participating or listening. With love this person you are describing doesnt really exist we all have blind spots and we have things to learn from most anyone, I'm happy Jordan is resonating he's a force of good! Peace.
Dr. Peterson is doing God's work. I listen to him from time to time since 2016 where excerpts of his college classes were available on UA-cam. After his personal trials and tribulations, seeing him doing these tours is just right in every sense. I'm happy for him and I have more faith in humanity. Thanks, JP!
There's more than needed to be said. Ending on all the chaos is not a good way to end any talk. He touched on the point for a moment in the middle, then rambled on about the negative, never returning to the point that needed to be emphasized for us to all learn and be happier, better people.
I want to share with you what can be another source of anxiety. I had repressed my emotional reaction to an event that happened in my childhood. Within the repressed feelings, was a deep sense of shame and humiliation as well as a deep sense of hopelessness. That’s why I repressed it. After these feelings emerged in therapy, and I had a ‘now I know what happened’ sort of moment, my anxiety reduced by about 25%. Before, there were always negative feelings about myself that in one way or another informed almost everything I did and everyone I dealt with. Having these real but repressed negative emotions can contribute to anxiety and tension associated with keeping these emotions at bay, or let’s say out of your awareness
What a speaker, I've seen this man a number of times live and every time he reduces complexity down to SUCH A MANAGABLE plate full that you come away satiated. Ignorance is lifted and gratitude for the opportunity to explore life in its place. Anyone can talk technically from within their field, but to those who charismatically entice the layman, bravo!
This is crazy. Years ago as I struggled with anxiety it occured to me that my anxiety was mainly due to my conscious knowing that I wasnt on the right path. If you stay focused on goals, even small ones, you will reduce your anxiety. Eventually you can ignore the anxious voices in your head because you know they aren't keeping you on the path.
An employee at a vape shop I frequent recommended I watch Jordan so I can try to better understand my problems. I'm self aware of them, but seem to fall back into the same loop when I try to fix them. I'll have to watch this one again. It's a little tiring feeling the same day in and day out. @jacobrompf5090 if you ever get a chance to listen to him in person. do all you can to be there, any time he is close to us, we go. he is so amazing in person. video, tv, etc doesn't even get close to feeling you will have seeing and listening to him. you can listen for an hour and think you have been there for 15 minutes. you are pulled in the minute he starts talking. trust me, have a great day

Small amount of Anxiety is good, it shows that you care about the results. Too much and constant Anxiety indicates that you are not happy where you are or the cycle you are in. To get rid of Anxiety - let go of the outcome, don't try to control things you can't 🕹️.

We used to be hunted by lions, tigers and bears, and we did a little hunting ourselves. Both running toward prey and running away from a hunter is exhilarating. Running works off stress. Do you sometimes find yourself sitting in your car and getting stressed out at other drivers or bicyclists? To try to relieve this stress you might grip your steering wheel a bit harder. Attempting to relieve stress by gripping a steering wheel will not do the trick. Your anxiety is telling you to get some serious exercise some time during the week. Try to not become stressed as often as possible, and try to work off your stress in the gym or on the footpath or around the track or on the basketball court.
That is true. But it's also true that you can get anxiety from overtraining. I have recently gone through this, and it is incredibly difficult and confusing.

@@tarico4436 I didn't know Stephen Hawking could exercise, (that's what you and I were originally talking about), and I never said I don't get out in the world. (???) Not everyone can take a brisk 5 mile walk though, (what I would consider exercise), or even a 1 mile walk. That was the point of my response. I get out plenty but I wouldn't consider that exercise, which is what you originally said relieves stress. I'm not confined to a chair yet but I can't do any of the things you mentioned to relieve stress. And I'm not alone. But there are many other ways to deal with stress besides exercise - which is very good, don't get me wrong. But if you can't "get some serious exercise", you can relieve your stress in other ways. 25 years with chronic PTSD has taught me a few things about the human mind and emotions.

I'm different than that in that I say don't induce the stress in the first place.......... that's #1. But if you find yourself inducing stress because of your spouse or your job or for whatever reason, then try to reduce it. With alcohol? Well, not to excess, but a little here and there is healthy. With prescription drugs? I am against that. But I know there are many who find themselves taking those pills, and they have doctors suggesting/prescribing those pills, and I just think if they vigorously exercised as if their life depended on it, many might get that stress relief that they so dearly needed. Looks like Hawking could barely move his neck. But he was married. Rumor has it he was so active his wife complained of him abusing her. I mention getting out in the world because there is a stationary bicycle at my gym. And I hate it. I much prefer riding my bicycle among all sorts of others. Some get on my case from the luxury of their motorized killing machines. Then I pedal away from them. Then others seem to be wearing strange looks on their faces when I'm near them on the bicycle/foot path. All of this weird stuff is so much different than the dreary boredom of pedaling in the gym. There is a sort of "do or become unalive" factor out there in the word, bicycling, too: it's if I get a flat tire 8 miles away from home, I can't just get off that stationary bicycle and zip home. Nope. I have to walk those 8 miles in the hot humid sun; this happened three weeks ago; found out I don't do enough walking; I was super sore for like 3 days after that walk. But anyway, the above paragraph is all about relieving stress, and it's sort of like how we relieved stress a million years ago: by running away from those lions, tigers and bears.
The way I view anxiety is this way, as humans our main function is survival. We sweat to cool off and shiver when cold to warm up, anxiety is like our overprotective friend that wants to keep us away from danger. (Or any perception of danger) whether it be psychological, physical etc. It lets us know we need to be vigilant

I love that JP speaks to the ones of us that feel a lot of things. Of course there are those who can live fine with a flat and plain rational explanation for the world, and think there's no reason to suffer and find any meaning, and that the world is the way it is, end of story. Great for them. There are many thinkers, philosophers, smart individuals for them. But, at least lately I feel like there's not many thinkers that speak about feelings, emotions, connection, meaning. (I had to read Foucault and Terry Eagleton in college, that should count as torture lol). I'm so glad I have the chance to hear JP talk❤ Sure the world is not in great shape, but what if I try not to make it even more miserable? What if I make myself a little less miserable? That's the main reason i like so much to hear his talks on life-and-mind matters, it's like someone is talking directly to what i'm thinking - It's cathartic to hear an explanation of things that satisfies your overthinking heart, while still making sense for your rational part.
They take that line of thought because they are entitled, insecure & lack accountability. Of course some things just are. But those things are much more rare than most want to admit. For instance, murder. Murders don't just make THEMSELVES happen. So murders are not things that just are. Somewhere, in each instance of murder, someone made a willful choice. And that choice came from somewhere broken & twisted within the murderer. For those plain thinkers, I'd suggest they want the dopamine rush of feeling like they understand something without paying the price that comes with that understanding in order to cut corners, bc they fear the unknown as well as what they cannot control. They oversimplify things bc they cannot cope with the reality that most things are beyond their mortal grasp. So they ignore complications in order to pretend things are always"simple" to pretend they have more of a grasp on things than they really do/are willing to admit. It's all bells & whisles. So, in many ways, oversimplification (quite ironically) actually complicates most things even further for themselves, & from there, others. Yes, with some things, "It is what it is" does absolutely apply. But most things occur is bc we humans make choices that bring about consequences that can complicate things that should be simple.
Peterson explains the why to anxiety and it helps lift the fog...such a detailed explanation that sums up much for me and in fact i just was in an instance during a car crash and anxiety presented too many what ifs...creating chaos indeed. 😳

This is seriously the best explanation I've heard of what anxiety *is.* Knowing the actual biological *function* of it sounds like that'd be the best way to give it what it needs to calm down when it starts setting off unwanted alarm bells. Currently experiencing anxiety and it’s just like what he stated about the path to your goal being disturbed. My temporary solution rn is to cancel everything and just focus on surviving day by day. Circumstances might stop me right now but I hope to achieve my goals one day.
Probably the best video I have seen from J. Peterson, but these are also many questions. Dopamine increases in pathways where the brain predicts more energy-efficient actions. However, this pathway appears to be obstructed. What transpires when I attain the Optimize State, having maximized energy efficiency? Should I enstablish new goals and proceed in discarding previous accomplishments? Is it necessary for everything in my life to remain interconnected? How will I ascertain this to devise a final plan? If I am unable to create a final plan, will negative emotions inevitably emerge to redirect me? What actions should I take before these emotions are so intense that recovery becomes challenging?

I agree. Forcing oneself to soldier on in bad situations can train us to accept a situation that isnt working. If its for a higher cause...thats understandable. If its someone ekse.s goal for you...ask what you want. Its also to do with the amygdala. Primitive part of our brain. Change course. Follow your own path. Soldiers get ptsd for a valid reason. Sadly the rest of us often just didnt get permission to be ourselves and follow our own goals. Blood sugar levels and food mixes also affect fear mechanisms. Took me to 61 gad and ptsd...to unlearn anxiety habits. Dont sweat the small stuff😮 jp is good advice..

I'm just a peasant, but my opinion is that your brain is basically trying to ensure simplicity (maintain order) by predicting a variety of possible negative outcomes and strategizing to avoid them, and those negative outcomes are more than likely prioritized in a list from most to least likely. The irony is this process induces the anxious psychological state, which may cause things to go awry, like a self-fulfilling prophecy.
In short, you can be anxious about the potential to be made anxious. If you've been seriously anxious before, you may be "anxious" to never go through that again. But since it's not possible to ensure the future beyond a 99% guarantee, you either have to learn acceptance (I've done all that I reasonably can), or the anxiety will prevent you from taking action.

Every time my life is a mess of anxiety and depression, and the usual external stimuli, like gaming and binge-watching, no longer help with keeping the chaos at bay, I feel subconciously drawn to Peterson's lectures, and it almost always makes me feel a little bit better. What he explains in this one has kinda made me understand why that is. Chaos is the multiplicity that emerges out of the collapse of the simplicity of order. The salvation from chaos is order.

I think that this is a beautiful description of anxiety and really the nature to overcoming depression. I have struggled mentally for so long and I recently have felt as though I have rediscovered myself in a way, and I mostly believe this was due to the rediscovery of what I concieve to be my purpose in life.
"Don't make a habit of pursuing things that aren't good for you." That's where willpower and self-restraint come in. I think a lot of people inherently know that falling prey to a certain temptation will send their life on a downward spiral, yet they'll indulge in it anyway to satisfy their momentary urges. And that's especially true if someone happens to be in a heightened emotional state.

2 Hours of Masterclass, packed into less than 20 minutes. You gotta re-watch his lectures multiple times to glean the full meaning and impact, because Jordan is such a deeply meaningful thinker - and sharer of his knowledge - that watching and listening to them, is often something like taking a drink of water on a hot day... from a fire hose that's wide open. 👀 In other words: to gain what is needed, you have to approach carefully, or what you deeply need, may end up overwhelming you.
Truth is I do want a job, and I do want to be taken more seriously to reach my goals, but in truth I'm freakin bored and have maxed out most knowledge they can offer me to the point if I myself attempt to seek a therapist all they tell me " I will not insult your intelligence telling you what you already know"... Dr. Peterson has opened doors from day one to expand my knowledge, sparking a whole new level... I want to know more of what he has to offer. I admit, I'm looking up. And because I'm walking into uncharted waters, it gives me a lot of anxiety, feeling brand new.
Maybe you are not listening because you think you already have it figured out, some of the time people will say things like "I wouldnt want to insult your intelligence because you already know this" because A they are being sarcastic or B they do not want to stir up your ego to the point you are no longer participating or listening. There's more than needed to be said. Ending on all the chaos is not a good way to end any talk. He touched on the point for a moment in the middle, then rambled on about the negative, never returning to the point that needed to be emphasized for us to all learn and be happier, better people.

I want to share with you what can be another source of anxiety. I had repressed my emotional reaction to an event that happened in my childhood. Within the repressed feelings, was a deep sense of shame and humiliation as well as a deep sense of hopelessness. That’s why I repressed it. After these feelings emerged in therapy, and I had a ‘now I know what happened’ sort of moment, my anxiety reduced by about 25%. Before, there were always negative feelings about myself that in one way or another informed almost everything I did and everyone I dealt with. Having these real but repressed negative emotions can contribute to anxiety and tension associated with keeping these emotions at bay, or let’s say out of your awareness

This is crazy. Years ago as I struggled with anxiety it occured to me that my anxiety was mainly due to my conscious knowing that I wasnt on the right path. If you stay focused on goals, even small ones, you will reduce your anxiety. Eventually you can ignore the anxious voices in your head because you know they aren't keeping you on the path.

Do you sometimes find yourself sitting in your car and getting stressed out at other drivers or bicyclists? To try to relieve this stress you might grip your steering wheel a bit harder.
Attempting to relieve stress by gripping a steering wheel will not do the trick.
Your anxiety is telling you to get some serious exercise some time during the week. Try to not become stressed as often as possible, and try to work off your stress in the gym or on the footpath or around the track or on the basketball court.
That is true. But it's also true that you can get anxiety from overtraining. I have recently gone through this, and it is incredibly difficult and confusing.

@@tarico4436 I didn't know Stephen Hawking could exercise, (that's what you and I were originally talking about), and I never said I don't get out in the world. (???) Not everyone can take a brisk 5 mile walk though, (what I would consider exercise), or even a 1 mile walk. That was the point of my response. I get out plenty but I wouldn't consider that exercise, which is what you originally said relieves stress. I'm not confined to a chair yet but I can't do any of the things you mentioned to relieve stress. And I'm not alone. But there are many other ways to deal with stress besides exercise - which is very good, don't get me wrong. But if you can't "get some serious exercise", you can relieve your stress in other ways. 25 years with chronic PTSD has taught me a few things about the human mind and emotions.

But if you find yourself inducing stress because of your spouse or your job or for whatever reason, then try to reduce it. With alcohol? Well, not to excess, but a little here and there is healthy. With prescription drugs? I am against that. But I know there are many who find themselves taking those pills, and they have doctors suggesting/prescribing those pills, and I just think if they vigorously exercised as if their life depended on it, many might get that stress relief that they so dearly needed.
Looks like Hawking could barely move his neck. But he was married. Rumor has it he was so active his wife complained of him abusing her.
I mention getting out in the world because there is a stationary bicycle at my gym. And I hate it. I much prefer riding my bicycle among all sorts of others. Some get on my case from the luxury of their motorized killing machines. Then I pedal away from them. Then others seem to be wearing strange looks on their faces when I'm near them on the bicycle/foot path. All of this weird stuff is so much different than the dreary boredom of pedaling in the gym. There is a sort of "do or become unalive" factor out there in the word, bicycling, too: it's if I get a flat tire 8 miles away from home, I can't just get off that stationary bicycle and zip home. Nope. I have to walk those 8 miles in the hot humid sun; this happened three weeks ago; found out I don't do enough walking; I was super sore for like 3 days after that walk.
But anyway, the above paragraph is all about relieving stress, and it's sort of like how we relieved stress a million years ago: by running away from those lions, tigers and bears.

The way I view anxiety is this way, as humans our main function is survival. We sweat to cool off and shiver when cold to warm up, anxiety is like our overprotective friend that wants to keep us away from danger. (Or any perception of danger) whether it be psychological, physical etc. It lets us know we need to be vigilant

I love that JP speaks to the ones of us that feel a lot of things. Of course there are those who can live fine with a flat and plain rational explanation for the world, and think there's no reason to suffer and find any meaning, and that the world is the way it is, end of story. Great for them. There are many thinkers, philosophers, smart individuals for them.
But, at least lately I feel like there's not many thinkers that speak about feelings, emotions, connection, meaning. (I had to read Foucault and Terry Eagleton in college, that should count as torture lol). I'm so glad I have the chance to hear JP talk❤

That's the main reason i like so much to hear his talks on life-and-mind matters, it's like someone is talking directly to what i'm thinking - It's cathartic to hear an explanation of things that satisfies your overthinking heart, while still making sense for your rational part.
They take that line of thought because they are entitled, insecure & lack accountability.
Of course some things just are. But those things are much more rare than most want to admit.
For instance, murder. Murders don't just make THEMSELVES happen. So murders are not things that just are.
Somewhere, in each instance of murder, someone made a willful choice. And that choice came from somewhere broken & twisted within the murderer.
For those plain thinkers, I'd suggest they want the dopamine rush of feeling like they understand something without paying the price that comes with that understanding in order to cut corners, bc they fear the unknown as well as what they cannot control.
They oversimplify things bc they cannot cope with the reality that most things are beyond their mortal grasp.
So they ignore complications in order to pretend things are always"simple" to pretend they have more of a grasp on things than they really do/are willing to admit.
It's all bells & whisles. So, in many ways, oversimplification (quite ironically) actually complicates most things even further for themselves, & from there, others.
Yes, with some things, "It is what it is" does absolutely apply.
But most things occur is bc we humans make choices that bring about consequences that can complicate things that should be simple.
Peterson explains the why to anxiety and it helps lift the fog...such a detailed explanation that sums up much for me and in fact i just was in an instance during a car crash and anxiety presented too many what ifs...creating chaos indeed. 😳

This is seriously the best explanation I've heard of what anxiety *is.* Knowing the actual biological *function* of it sounds like that'd be the best way to give it what it needs to calm down when it starts setting off unwanted alarm bells. In the same way that, knowing the 'chirp' in the air means that the smoke detector wants new batteries.

Probably the best video I have seen from J. Peterson, but these are also many questions. Dopamine increases in pathways where the brain predicts more energy-efficient actions. However, this pathway appears to be obstructed. What transpires when I attain the Optimize State, having maximized energy efficiency? Should I enstablish new goals and proceed in discarding previous accomplishments? Is it necessary for everything in my life to remain interconnected? How will I ascertain this to devise a final plan? If I am unable to create a final plan, will negative emotions inevitably emerge to redirect me? What actions should I take before these emotions are so intense that recovery becomes challenging?
I adore this man, helping me save my life.

Change course. Follow your own path. Soldiers get ptsd for a valid reason. Sadly the rest of us often just didnt get permission to be ourselves and follow our own goals. Blood sugar levels and food mixes also affect fear mechanisms. Took me to 61 gad and ptsd...to unlearn anxiety habits. Dont sweat the small stuff😮 jp is good advice..
