I'm in full support of Andrew through this new era of DGD and everyone needs to show some respect to this very talented human! 🖤Now that we're in the post-Tilian era (my favorite era thus far), I love the concept of seeing DGD as more of a "collective" than a traditional single-person fronted band. I agree with Andrew that I think that perspective shift will make this all easier to swallow for the fans tuned in! Like Andrew said in the podcast, if we think of this new era like a "Secret Band PLUS" then we'll probably be very happy 🤘🏼
DGD's always been Will, Matt, and Jon (Andrew said that just as I was typing this lol). As long as they're here, I'm here. Andrew is a wonderful addition and he has a rock solid mindset. Take that adversity and turn it into energy. Yeah we like to say it's all about the art, but at the end of the day art doesn't pay the bills. I'm glad Andrew stepped up and did what he felt like he needed to do for the good of the band. I hope he comes to enjoy being the lead vocalist more than he thought he would previously. Love this band
I honestly think this is the best case scenario in transition of vocals and I’m all in for it. When I heard new Eidola I thought man this would be crazy to hear on the DGD side of things.
" None of the other internet bullshit (Rape allegations) stalled us at all, from a professional standpoint. Like, People should know that. I'm not afraid to fucking say that. We had our most successful tours, our most successful numbers, AFTER all of that shit happened. That's the reality, its inarguable, it's hard data. That shit didn't stall us at all, the Rape allegations only made us bigger. "
nah. DGD as it exists is completely different. New age group coming to listen, new sociopolitical environment affecting the music, new vocalists/guitarists, and last but not least the band has been dragging out its existence waaaaaaaaaaaaaay past their golden era. DBM absolutely obliterates anything that came after. Its not even close. The music doesn't even sound similar enough to make a comparison lol. The muse came out for DBM. It will never happen like that again for this group. BUT im glad you guys enjoy the new stuff. Personally, first time i heard Eidola, funny enough, i thought "this sounds like generic DGD with a mediocre singer"
Been a fan since whatever I say is royal ocean. As long as will,Jon, and Matt are willing to continue the band I’m here for it. Andrew is an amazing vocalist and guitarist. We are lucky to have him as member. Keep kicking ass guys. I will always be rooting for y’all!
Isn’t it crazy though? We’ve been around and through EVERY release and it’s almost like these albums have just complimented our lives. I can pinpoint where I was at with any song.
I feel the same. To add, maybe they held back on production because of Tillian. He is an incredible vocalist and very hard shoes to fill. However, Andrew is the guy. These new songs sound amazing. Andrew kinda sounds like Tillian, Kurt and Jonny all combined. I'll miss Tillian, but it's refreshing to hear something new. Can't quit for upcoming DGD!
I love how he puts it as room for collaborations! There doesnt have to be one position or member locked in permanently! Also I LOVE how he says Jon is the front man BECAUSE HE IS!! He has been in it and overshadowed by the audience this whole time! I also like how Will Jon and Matt have been pulling the strings the whole time. They are the backbone of this band
Andrews parts in songs like Nothing Shameful and No Man's Cringe are some of my favorite vocals in any music I listen to. In my opinion he's going to fill the "role" perfectly fine and I'm looking forward to having him on cleans more often. Speed Demon and Straight from the Heart are great, his hooks are catchy. I'd love to hear a Jackpot Juicer length album with this style of music. He seems to have an amazing attitude and it makes me appreciate the music even more. Hope they come to Canada :)
The new single sounds great. I loved Tillian and I’ve been a fan since Tides, but I’ve missed the deeper, soulful singing of JC and Travis, so for me this change is a welcome one. Good luck, Andrew, I’m looking forward to what you bring to the band.👍
Andrew has revivified everything I loved about DGD and that they have been lacking for damn near a decade, These are two of the best songs they've ever made and I am 1000% here for the Andrew Era as someone thats *been* a fan sine before Tilian
i’m so excited for this new chapter, i will admit i wasn’t on board for andrew doing vocals (i even wrote an essay about it when i was younger) but now i am more excited after hearing his vocals in the new songs, plus i love his dedication. also bc he taught gobby how to lift that was also so sweet
I'm sad that I'll never get to see the DGD x Tilian erra, live. That said, thank you for speaking out about the separation, the perspective offered helps me settle with the change and gives me hope to still come see a show if you'll come to Spokane or Boise.
First off, I love Andrew's voice, I. Excited to see / hear what's next for these guys, doesn't matter who's lead they are always killing it. Also, I was at swanfest right after Tim died, and it was such a heartbreaking yet beautiful experience and anyone who is a fan knew what had just happened and didnt judge the sound thay night, we were just happy they were playing and we sung extra hard to help when tillian was choked up and couldn't sing. It was the most moving and memorable concert ill probably ever experience. Mad respect for those guys
I fucking love how straight forward andrew was in this interview. I've ALWAYS seen jon as the front man and am excited to see the future of this band. they've always given us art and will continue to give us art. ❤️
Andrew Wells is the best thing to happen to DGD in a long time. I have been a fan since 2007 and I have been here through Jonny, Kurt, back to Jonny, and then to Tilian... and I am so excited for the future of this band. Andrew is so right that the core of DGD has always been Jon, Matt, and Will. I had the pleasure of seeing Eidola over the weekend and I met Andrew and he was an absolute class act. He puts his heart and soul into everything he does and it's so inspiring to me.
Andrew had the best part on the last album and I'm beyond stoked to see him getting the support from the band. I just hope that doesn't slump Eidola in return
im going to miss tilian, a lot, i hope he still makes music and colabs together again because he pairs well in dgd... but if he continues his solo carrer, ill still follow him.. loved him in tides of man, loved him in dgd, and loved his solo stuff. but thats more than a decade of them all making great music. heres to Andrew to bring the band to a new direction. also Rest in peace tim
I'm very excited to see the future of this band. I saw a recent interview with M Shadows from A7X and it sounds like Andrew and him have similar mindsets about the scene. They both deserve respect for focusing on their own goals instead of what their communities want
Listened to the new songs... so hard to replace a voice like tilians. Those notes he can hit were unreal and why i started listening to DGD. Sad I won't be hearing new stuff with him in the band.
I remember prior to the release of the Deathstar/Self Titled album, Nic Newsham from Gatsby’s American Dream tried out for them (and was featured on Uneasy Hearts). I’ve always been a fan of his voice on both Uneasy Hearts as well as Gatsby’s. Would be really interesting to see a possible future with him.
Andrew....as a DGD fan from the beginning, please don't listen to the negative comments. I saw you fill in for Tillian during his hiatus and you killed it. I thought you were a better live front man than him and had the crowd in the palm of your hands. I get you don't want to be a lead for DGD but your voice is sick an a great throwback to the old DGD vibe. Keep it up brother!
Andrew has a great voice and i do like his personality. Really like how he articulates the band’s chemistry and gives respect to the OGs. I’d love Johnny back thoughhhh but either way I’m here to the end
Fantastic interview, so glad I listened to this. I’m an even bigger fan of Andrew after hearing this. 1. opinions are like assholes everyone’s got one. The band will continue to do their thing as they always did and continue to set a certain standard because in my eyes there’s no other band like them. 2. The idea of Jon Mess as the front man and continue rotating vocalist for the diversity of music, insanely incredible idea. Absolutely love it. 3. As an original listener from when they first appeared on Purevolume, myself, and close friends included immediately think of Johnny Craig when you say the name Dance Gavin Dance. I don’t think it’s a toxic viewpoint, but if everyone can get along and put the past behind them, we need to get Johnny back on some songs. Johnny, Andrew and Jon together will absolutely melt faces!!
I've always sort of seen DGD as more similar to a hip hop group than a rock band and as the years go by it feels less silly and more actually just what it is! I would love to see an album with like 8 features from all different genres!!! Keep up the great work everyone.
DGD has felt like different flavors ever since Kurt took up the mic. The guitars, drum work and screams are so specific to them that anything else just changes it but not enough to change the band from being DGD. It's good. Speed Demon has been bumping in my brain for three days now. The band will go forward and holy crap does it have a legacy.
The truth is that I had not heard Andrew in interviews, now that I hear him, I respect and support him much more. I wish him and DGD all the best in this new era and I hope we can continue enjoying their music for much longer. I loved the new songs and I'm hopeful for the future ❤
I wasn't feeling the last three albums as much, went from listening to DGD almost daily, to maybe twice a year. So I'm hoping this is the refresher for me.
IMO I’ve always loved the contrast between the vocals. Heaven and hell in a good way. I feel like the new songs did not showcase that. Were Andrew’s vocals purposely drowned out because it’s interim? DGD fans are no strangers to having rotating “clean” vocals. Hope the band makes a decisive decision. Love the nitpicking nerds making an appearance too haha
I always enjoy listening to Andrew, he's extremely insightful and on point! His take on the hate/negative comments he got after filling in for Tillian's temporary departure was very eye-opening as well, I thought that it was subpar when I listened to some youtube clips of them performing live. Now, given the backstory of his personal struggles during that time, I understand 100% how challenging that was for him. I'm all for the new direction of DGD and I think it will be amazing (especially Speed Demon is great!). Many of my favorite DGD songs are songs that feature Andrew, and the latest Eidola album is just slapping 🤘
I personally don't want anyone else to take the role of clean vocals other than Andrew. I know he has mentioned about not wanting to give up having Eidola be his main focus, but I think he is the perfect person to fill that spot. I am also WAY okay with Jon taking more of a lead role as his vocals have been my favorite part since I got into them with Mothership.
Dude i agree with you and im here for it. Been a dance gavin dance fan since i was 16. Just got my wife into dGD and now my baby girl falls asleep to jon mess voice
I don't understand the thought process "we just had our most successful album and tour of our entire career? Let's fire our vocalist and sabotage it?" Like this makes zero sense
We've had 12 awesome yrs with Tillian being here. DGD has been my favorite band the whole time, I don't like the JC era much and Kurt only did 1 album lol so I am open to change with Andrew and Jon, as Jon Mess has been my favorite all along. Andrew ty for clearing this up for people who are intelligent enough to seek this out without judging you all so harshly. ❤ I'm still here !
Dgd was the first band i ever saw live when i was 16 & the only band i still listen to regularly to this day. That sound has constantly evolved keeping it fresh. Interested to see what comes of this vocal change, i like the two singles. The only hate i have is for ticket prices, play the house of blues or something. Don’t want to shell out $400 for this festival bs!!
@@mattkraig Naa he sounds way similar to Tilian. I’d rather them get Matt McAndrew from Rain City Drive. It would be something new with a different voice. He could sing too!
Andrew is the mix between Kurt (my favorite as of now) and Tilian that I need. Ever since Andrews vocals have been on dgd tracks I wanted him to be the singer though. “For the Jeers” was my favorite song on JJ because of Andrew.
Wait who has issues with Andrew being the vocalist?? He's got such a great voice, I just wish he was easier to hear in the new songs. Ever since Evaporate I've been dying for more of his vocals.
Andrew is the secret lead singer of dgd. I have been a huge fan of all the singers of dgd and I wanna say Andrew is the guy. He is the best singer they’ve ever had
Hear me out, here; I feel like, as a fan of all eras of DGD, the instrumentation has been phoned in. I feel it doesn't stack up to any previous albums. I feel like Will, in specific, takes his creativity for granted and phones it in. It feels uninspired instrumentally. Andrew is legit the best thing to happen to them, imo.
If the creative differences were what caused Tilian to depart, and DGD being the best it’s been doesn’t make sense to me for the 3 core members to all agree it’s time for something new. What has been done for 12 years is what made DGD get to its peak, why change the formula?
the core 3 make music they love and want to continue to evolve. creative people get bored when they plateau and that is what i love about Will Swan. Tilian is my personal fav but my Best buddies fav is Kurt and we all have a running joke with our other buddy who doesn't listen to anything but DBM lol I really think features and collabs for the cleans would be an incredible idea leaving Jon as the frontman
Well he did say something like they didn't agree on what songs to play live so clearly there were at least some creative differences. I think tilian really enjoyed the poppier side of his music. But the only ones who really know why they needed to split is the band themselves, I'm sure they had their reasons. You said it yourself, why change unless it was necessary? In their eyes it must have been necessary especially if they see it as their way to make a living. They wouldn't take that risk for no reason
When noone wants to tour with your band because your lead vocalist has valid sexual assault allegations that even the heroin addicted scammer you had as a first singer never had, you likely realize adjustments HAVE to be made whether you want to or not.
Because at a certain point, as you grow you have different ideas where that next direction is. Tilian is very obviously leaning more and more into the groove and pop. After increasingly having that flavor over several albums and that span nearly a decade and hitting its peak with Afterburner and especially Jackpot Juicer. it wouldn't surprise me that Will, Jon and Matt (as well as Andrew though more so on the last two albums) likely have tons of other material that didn't fit that bill for groove and pop. So they say "Tilian, we have had enough of a groove era, let's lean away from that to a new direction" and Tilian thinks "But that's where I want to go". These two directions become irreconcilable and they just all say "we have very different ideas, Tilian, DGD is going the new direction and you can pursue the groove and pop but it won't be with us because the greater majority here agree". Other personal issues can play into it but I do believe this is the core of the issue with the other interpersonal stuff being added pressure to decision.
4:16 so tastefully ironic coming from a band with album covers tht feature a slew of many different animals. elder goose or count bassy--the battles in instant gratification or acceptance speech
It's a good interview and Andrew is certainly one of the more forward-facing members of the band in that he goes on podcasts regularly and gives good insight. That said, I wish they would just address why Tillian left/was asked to leave/chose to leave or whatever the mechanism for his departure was. It's hard to just let it go when Andrew himself in this interview says they just had their most successful album and tour EVER, even with what occurred with Tillian and the domestic violence allegation. So what changed? What happened? Why on a random April Monday poof Tillian is gone?
seriously and tilian is a part of the reason this was their most successful album\tour, all these fans and even the band members thinking they're better off without tilian are mistaken. Tilian fit with this band soooo well i dont even think people understand.
@@flexxn6770 I agree on all. I think it was financial. Andrew made a point to go straight into the money and this is a business at the beginning. My bet is Tillian wanted more money after that last album and/or he was getting too big for the band/core 3 members. If it was the domestic abuse thing, they would have fired him two years ago. If it was because he got married they would kick Will out too since he has a baby on the way. So that's why I think it's financially driven. They'll rotate singers and become one of those "DGD feat. insert singer name" on a lot of their songs going forward and have core songs that Andrew can sing on tour.
The triplet of Jackpot juicer was so good, the universe could not let it have a sequel. I sincerely wish to hear Strawberry swisher pt.4 by Andrew 🍓 even more inspiring to hear Tree city Sessions 3 ❤
This fuckin sucks. Will has a great voice but dgd without Tillian is tough to follow. Tllian brought the clean ass vox that just fit and brought it all together.
There is a Band called Cat Company wich is insanly good but under the Radar that Sounds a lot like you Guys. I woud die for a Collab but since CC is kinda Dead (thier words) i doubt that wich is kinda sad.
One of the things that really sets DGD apart is the next level singers. Not that Andrew isn't great he just isn't on the same level as past leads. Bring Jonny back! =)
All great stuff… many are justifiably disappointed about touring with Ronnie Radke after saying things like “what’s the trade off” - that’s just a bad look.
They should've gotten a lady singer. Hear me out. Tilian's range would fit easier in her vocal register (ensuring the continuation of the Tilian Era songs) while allowing them to create unique stuff in the future.
I'm in full support of Andrew through this new era of DGD and everyone needs to show some respect to this very talented human! 🖤Now that we're in the post-Tilian era (my favorite era thus far), I love the concept of seeing DGD as more of a "collective" than a traditional single-person fronted band. My issue with the 2 new songs is that Andrew's vocals are mixed too low, he sounds too good to be muffled out by the rest of the instrumentation!
Yeah the audio technician that mastered the vocals did a shit job completely agree with you. Musically wise, the songs were dope.
I feel the same. Its a production "issue". Andrew is awesome.

His part in “nothing shameful” is one of my favorite moments in dgd history, and I’ve been here from the beginning.
Don’t forget his part in evaporate either, pure soul
You listened to Eidola?
The new single sounds great. I loved Tillian and I’ve been a fan since Tides, but I’ve missed the deeper, soulful singing of JC and Travis, so for me this change is a welcome one. Good luck, Andrew, I’m looking forward to what you bring to the band.👍
Jc was definitely soulful but KT is so whiny I can’t do it at all 😂
Andrew has great self awareness of himself and his position, very humble dude overall
Those 2 singles are the most excited I've ever been for DGD in a decade. I hope they continue with Andrew!

My only complaint is we don't have enough andrew. I genuinely believe he's been my favorite DGD vocalist, and I can't wait to hear more
Omg. Please release a full album and headline tour with this lineup!! These 2 songs are soooo good!! I cant fucking wait!

Dude i agree with you and im here for it. Been a dance gavin dance fan since i was 16. Just got my wife into dGD and now my baby girl falls asleep to jon mess voice
I won't see them in concert with this current line up. You need someone that can hit the notes like Tillian did.
Andrew is great.
He slapped on those songs tho omfg
I don't understand the thought process "we just had our most successful album and tour of our entire career? Let's fire our vocalist and sabotage it?" Like this makes zero sense
Facts!
Gotta be more complicated. I bet tillian wanted more 💸💸
If we don't get DBM3 (which honestly we shouldn't) as an album sounds like we'll get it as a song at least.
go andrew 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
15:20-16:20 is straight facts
I hope it is still funky even if its heavier I'll listen either way.
They shouldn’t have parted ways, Tilian being with the band was the best man
We've had 12 awesome yrs with Tillian being here.
I’m all for Andrew taking the cleans. Just some thoughts , the lead from Body Thief has the perfect range for this band.
I was hoping Dani would get a chance so badly, haha
@@mattkraig Naa he sounds way similar to Tilian. I’d rather them get Matt McAndrew from Rain City Drive. It would be something new with a different voice. He could sing too!
Andrew is the mix between Kurt (my favorite as of now) and Tilian that I need. Ever since Andrews vocals have been on dgd tracks I wanted him to be the singer though. “For the Jeers” was my favorite song on JJ because of Andrew.
Hey i dig the new stuff you guys just keep rocking
Wait who has issues with Andrew being the vocalist?? He's got such a great voice, I just wish he was easier to hear in the new songs. Ever since Evaporate I've been dying for more of his vocals.
Bring Kurt back, he’s one of us.
Tilian was great in the band, but I think DGD still gonna be great.
I'm assuming this means Tillian won't be joining the gang for the When we were young fest
His confidence & self assurance is so attractive 🤤🤤
It sounds like they are going to take their time and eventually find another front man.
Andrew is the secret lead singer of dgd. I have been a huge fan of all the singers of dgd and I wanna say Andrew is the guy. He is the best singer they’ve ever had
Alright time for the Andrew tree city sesh😁
1 album with Andrew
Downtown battle mountain 3 with Jonny
Happiness 2 with Kurt
Then life would be complete
i would love andrew to sing whatever he wants and not trying to do it higher to be like tilian or any other vocalist that have been in dgd
At 15:03 is the best part of this video
They’re praising Jonny HES COMING BACK GUYS ITS OFFICIAL (not really but here’s my prayers)
Andy Cizek would make a great member.
I thought a good deal of jackpot juicer was awful, am I alone in that?
I’m loving the new songs
Andrew is a fan of jonny craig? Me too. 😍😍😍
This fuckin sucks. Will has a great voice but dgd without Tillian is tough to follow. Tllian brought the clean ass vox that just fit and brought it all together.
He's acting like he didn't want the spot but inside he is grinning from ear to ear. He wanted that lead spot and he's happy about it
You think so?
There is a Band called Cat Company wich is insanly good but under the Radar that Sounds a lot like you Guys. I woud die for a Collab but since CC is kinda Dead (thier words) i doubt that wich is kinda sad.
One of the things that really sets DGD apart is the next level singers. Not that Andrew isn't great he just isn't on the same level as past leads. Bring Jonny back! =)
❤ great interview I’m excited for this new era and FUCK THE HATERS
All great stuff… many are justifiably disappointed about touring with Ronnie Radke after saying things like “what’s the trade off” - that’s just a bad look.
I didn't like the tillian era but I think this dude is a great fit
Imo, they should have just made Secret Band LP3 to hold us over. This all just feels so sudden
They should've gotten a lady singer. Hear me out. Tilian's range would fit easier in her vocal register (ensuring the continuation of the Tilian Era songs) while allowing them to create unique stuff in the future.
that would be super fun! i also think someone could sing Tilians songs in a different octave and it might sound cool too
so no jonny craig, raight?💀
I just need Kurt in the band
I tried, but it’s hard to enjoy their music without Tilian’s vocals, it just doesn’t sound as good.
Stay away from heroin and you’ll be fine!!
Idk man, if you guys have had a problem with MULTIPLE lead singers, then maybe you guys are the problem? Idk.
What does he mean don’t make this band my entire personality? I don’t understand.
