Here is an idea that I do that may help someone out..... I purchased a wooden t.v. tray (cheap at Walmart) and mounted my Stanwood cake winder to it. This way I can leave my winder mounted, but move it around with me. It works great for me. Thanks for showing this. I could spend an hour watching yarn caking as it is so relaxing. 😊

When I was a teenager, my mother use to have me hold out my arms and she would put the yarn around them and wind the yarn into a ball.
    Great tutorial, Crystal!

As a child I held my arms out for my grannie to wind balls manually. You could get a good rhythm going between the "human swift" and the "human winder", there was a knack of moving your arms (maybe the hands more than the arms) so that the wool flowed smoothly and complemented the movements of the one doing the winding. The balls my grannie wound were so neat and regular. If I ever have to wind a ball because of yarn barf, it is nowhere near as neat. I guess that in the past most yarn was sold as hanks, so hand winding was a regularly-used skill.
I have a query about centre-pull yarns, perhaps someone can help me out? I get the impression that centre-pull is very popular now, especially in the USA (maybe that's a reflection on the nationality of many UA-camrs, and the current popularity of cake-style yarn) but I don't think it is so prevalent in the UK. I have only tried it once, knitting a shawl from a colour gradient cake yarn, and I didn't really enjoy the experience. I found the yarn was inclined to get twisted as I knitted and kind of tightened up the ply. Also, as the cake was used up from the centre it started to get messy - I found myself having to use a rubber band or a hair scrunchie to hold it together so that it didn't collapse into a barfy mess. Maybe I'm missing something, but working from the outside to inside just seems more natural and a much tidier way of working. Is centre-pull just a current novelty or fad that will pass? I am open to being persuaded if anyone can explain any benefits. I realise with graduated colours or ombre yarns that you might wish to start with the inside colour, but I think I would rather rewind the cake to get my starting colour on the outside.
This has ended up a much longer comment than I intended, so if you are still reading thank you for your patience, and I would be interested to hear the views of others.

@@elainemacdonald6541 I think that the center pull is here to stay. In the USA they recently came out with O'Go made by Red ♥️ Heart yarn. It's not supposed to tangle at all.

@@judylake8464 Thank you for taking the time to reply. I wouldn't refuse to use centre-pull if it was yarn I really wanted, but maybe I am stuck in my ways for preferring the more traditional "start outside and work inwards" approach.

And I appreciate seeing the tools you have so I know what the heck I need to save up to buy, lol! Invaluable information, as usual. You are priceless, literally, Crystal. This was a great tutorial especially for those who have not seen a hank being caked before or a swift. I love to use my winder and tend to use it when I am working on a project and the skein has a lot of knots for some reason or after finishing a project and I want to keep the yarn contained so I can use it easily for another project. It is such a relaxing activity and makes me smile every time I cake some yarn! I have an Amish tabletop swift but I would like to get an umbrella swift . It just takes a lot of space to use but it is lovely. Thanks again for the tutorial, Crystal!

My Grandmother always had hanks of yarn. She would open it up. I would hold my arms out and she put the yarn around my wrists. She would start winding it into a ball and I would move my arms slightly right to left and she was winding the ball. I loved doing that for her and I have done several of them during my youth. Thanks for showing this to us and thanks for bringing up some beloved memories of time with my Grandma.

I wish I had known a year ago what a swift was, I would love to get back the one I gave away, which was my my mother’s who had just passed. I could really use that now! She had a lot of fabulous yarn in hanks in her stash that I received and I’ve been trying to use up.
She was a knitter, I am a crocheter, and a fairly new one at that. Just 5 years or so. I just started learning Tunisian crochet as well, which works well with the finer yarns.I, like you, find it difficult to crochet with a fine yarn and small hooks. With Tunisian crochet, it’s easier!

    Hey Crystal.
    Thanks for sharing.
I put the hank over my knees and hand ball it.
    Some day... 👍😊💛🏵
That is a nice winder! Works beautifully. Checking out the end results.
    Happy yarning.

Well that method sures beats mine! Upside down, 3 legged milking stool. LOL! I wind center pull balls, but I sure have become fond of cakes. Thanks, Crystal. This was cool to watch.

I love my Stanwood Yarn winder. I have the 10 oz one. I also purchased the Stanwood tabletop Amish Swift.
I don't cake my hanks until I am ready to use them. I will cake my yarn leftover in a skein because it keeps them from getting tangled and it also makes them easier to store.
