Dear Fiber Spider, the last hank of yarn I bought (beautiful stuff) I didn’t know how to work with it and I spent eight hours untangling it. Thank you so much for showing me how to do this.
Thank you Fiber Spider! I might add another tip I saw a while back that's handy when you're balling up yarn. To make it a center-pull ball, take the beginning strand and hold it against a wooden spoon handle. Wind the yarn around the spoon handle, making sure you keep the beginning of strand held against the handle as you wind. When finished, you have a great center-pull ball of yarn. I even do this with little scraps of yarn so they're balled up and ready to use for another project. Thanks again. I always love your tutorials!!♡
You saved me a ton of misery! I had three Hanks of fine crochet thread. The first one didn't go well at all and ended up in the trash. After watching your video, the second went very smooth and I was able to make three cakes from it. I still have another one but it is no longer antagonizing me from its' place in my yarn cabinet. Adapt and overcome!!! Thank you soooo much!
Thanks for this. I use a chair as well. I don't have a lot of space for gadgets so I use what's available. I also learned how to make a center pull ... thumb ball. I can make it to look like yarn cakes. I love yarn and I love fiddling with it. Making a center pull thumb ball is, to me, as fun as knitting and crocheting. I also crocheted a couple of small baskets to hold yarn balls that are not center pull ones to keep them from rolling around. Easy to store and washable. Love you ... love your voice ... love your vids. Bless you all over !!!
I have 6 hanks to do & you have saved me! I do have a table top yarn winder & a travel nostepinne for winding cakes from skeins *but* I don’t have a yarn swift & had zero interest in buying another thing or giving it space in my home. I had no idea what I was going to do with these 🤬 hanks but when you find the right yarn… Honestly the simplest solution is always the best one. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you so much for this video! I have a few hanks of yarn that I received in a monthly yarn box. They've been stored away because I thought I'd need to purchase all sorts of contraptions in order to wind them into balls. Your method is perfect for me as I also don't have a human willing to hold a yarn hank upright for hours on end! 😏😉 This video is super beneficial! Thanks again!!
OMG thank you!! I have some gorgeous lace weight alpaca yarn that I have been dying to use and too scared to unravel the hank, not knowing how to stop it from becoming an unruly mess! This makes so much sense, you're a gem!!
I love you tutorials. I followed one to the letter and wowed my group making lap afghans for the American Cancer Society to give to centers for patients receiving chemo treatments. On winding hands, I have two things to add. 1. I use two chairs back to back and position them so the yarn is closer to the top of the yarn. 2. I usually wind around the wrapper of the yarn and then fold the paper up for more stability AND I wind over one finger so the yarn is not pulled to tight and not lose any of the “stretch ability” than may have put in during the making of the yarn. I am an older knitter, from before the advent of synthetics, so this is advice is especially important when working with wools. Keep up the goof fun work!
Hi Craig. I haven’t been crocheting very long and have been intimidated by hanks of yarn. This video has given me the courage to give it a try. You have a way of explaining things that I get. Your patience is appreciated. Than you
this video is great! JUST what i was looking for...i just spent over an hour doing this by hand but didn't use a chair...SO MANY TANGLES! thank you SO SO much xo
Thank you so much for this!!! I don’t have a chair like the one in your video so I used two yoga blocks…. and it worked PERFECTLY!!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Thanks again!
Thank you Mr Fiber Spider (I got into a huge tangle last time I tackled a skein ... aaaagh 🤪). By the by ... please never lose your giggle ... I absolutely adore your giggle. It makes me chuckle every time. You are pure sunshine! 💖
I am sooooooo happy I found this. I was getting frustrated with the knots while trying to wind the hank off a door knob. I thought there had to be an easier way. Thank you you tube and spider fiber
Have hung the hank over both arms of a chair like a captain's chair or office chair. I prefer center pull balls so I tuck a short length inside my watch strap and wind a ball maintaining that centre pull using my stationery watch-strapped left hand with the right hand doing the winding. Love the results. Thanks for the lovely video.
Spent about two and a half hours last night struggling with my new, beautiful, hand-dyed Merino yarn, stressed out of my mind as it tightened into seemingly unmanageable tangles, and all I needed was a chair, LOL. Thanks for the tutorial!
dont know if you guys gives a shit but if you're stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch all the latest series on instaflixxer. Been binge watching with my brother these days xD
thank you so much! i just bought my first hank of yarn and was so confused about what to do, this was such a positive and helpful video to find! :) thank you for making me smile today, you seem such a lovely person
So happy I found this. I recently bought a hank and didn’t want to invest in a winder or wood thing just for 4 hanks. I was the unwilling participant for my moms yarn , use to sit in floor , mom on couch and I held the hank as you said. Memories 🎼🎶
I am impressed that a person made a comment and then I saw it addressed shortly after. Kudos to you and very helpful I have stayed away from hanks of yarn for this very reason thanks
Thank you so much for this! I've just started enjoying more pricey yarns and hated the time and mess it took to wind it! Your set up has literally taken 10 minutes 😍
Thank you so much, I have several hanks and had a heck of a time unraveling one of them so I just put the rest up. Now it's going to be simple. Big hugs.
Im so happy to find this video I got 5 "hanks" of yarn today and after completely tangling the first one I went on a mission to find someone to help me figure this out thank you for your help!!!!! only ruined one...
Thank you! I mostly use skeins, so I didn't have much practice with hanks, and the last time I tried it ended up horribly tangled because I didn't know what I was doing. Now I have 11 hanks I ordered for making a sweater and this video was key for not making that same mistake X11.
Thanks Fiber Spider! I never work with light weight yarns but today I bought some on a hank because it was so beautiful. Got home and got really upset about untwisting it :D
Thank you this recording has been quite helpful. Ur living is not in vain🙄😚😁 thanks!! Just opened mine and I did not have this info, needless to say🙄.ugh, messed my whole load. Not having known this video at the.time, ended in countless.cuts and rejoining 😣,ugh. Keep doing what ur doing,it helps another get by. I am increased!!!😝☺️
Your a genius! I had my older kids hold their hands out, well until now👍. You need a yarn/ball winder😉👍. I bought the type you attach to a table & hand crank. It worked just fine but I have 2 plates & 16 screws in my dominate arm so it was just way too tiring on me. So I splurged & got the Boys electric yarn winder😍😍😍. I love buying new yarn just to use it lol. Either one will change your yarn life my dear friend and leave you with more free time 😉. Thanks for this hack❤😘
Thank you sharing. When I got some yarn like that. I did the same thing. I put the yarn around the chair. To me it was common sense lol. Your the best. You Rock.
Perfect timing that I came upon this since my daughter got me a ha k of alpaca yarn from an alpaca farm. I know what I’m doing tomorrow morning!! Great to know I can do this without a swift
Hello fiber spider , l haven’t seen your videos in a few years, l followed you about 4 or five years ago l made several of your beautiful shawls l think it was , and my Dutch grandmother from Amsterdam Holland use to work her yarn into a ball by putting the wool around a chair or she would have me or one of my brothers stand there with the yarn around hands spread out and it would get a little tiring sometimes lol , we got to visit for the first time our Dutch grandmother n grandfather, uncles aunts and cousins back in approximately 1958-1961,parents were actually considering moving to Holland, so we were there longer then expected but they decided against it after realizing that my dad would never be able to learn the language and him being a carpenter n roofer most of his life ‘we returned home to the states but what a wonderful experience as children in that era to get to see another country where they grow the most beautiful tulips and make the most fantastic wooden😮😮 shoes, l also learned the Dutch language and went to school there for a year and so did my brothers boy what fun l had there and being from Florida l got to see snow for the first time the canals would freeze up and everyone would be ice skating we lived in a 4th floor apartment building right across the street from canals l could sit in my bedroom and watch the races they would have and even got to see the Queen of go by in a boat my daddy hung out the window to capture a picture of the queen it was Queen Beatrice l think if my memory serves nme right she was also with her husband and four daughters riding thro Amsterdam, l could be mistaken about the Queen it could have been Willameana spelling could be wrong too thank you for sharing this fiber Spider🙏❤️
Super helpful!!! Thank you so much :) Just got home with a few skeins of handspun Jacob wool from Isle of Skye, and thought how the heck do I ball this???? Now I know!!!
Thank you for posting this!! I had to cut my last hank into several pieces making about 4 small balls instead of one big one 😆 on a side note could you please make a video showing how to downsize things to a smaller scale? I love your hat patterns but I cannot figure out how to adapt them to a smaller size for preemie or newborns and still have them look right!! I would eventually like to make some hats to donate to my local hospital NICU!! Thanks so much for all of your videos I have found several of them to be very helpful in this learning process 😊
Thank you Fibes 😃👍 you have just saved 9 hanks that were sitting waiting to be tortured by me because their 10th sibling died in a horrible accident that was my first attempt before watching your video
Winding tip - don't wind too tight, it will stretch your yarn if it's a natural fiber. Also, some skeins/hanks are tied off with the ends, so be extra careful when you untie them. I have gotten really good at doing a center pull ball around my thumb and I can wind it by hand pretty darn quick.
If you don't have a chair with arm rest, you can use two chairs and I put my cutting board between the horizontal slots to keep the yarn up. So happy when I figured out that you don't need extra tools to buy.
Thank you Thank you Thank you! I've got 2 more that I've been afraid to mess with due to the fact that 1st one is SO tangled, That I'm frustrated to deal with it.
I am really looking forward to what you are going to make with your yarnbox yarn. I heard you say it was over 400 yds but I didn't catch the weight or content. Ooooooo so pretty.
The yarn available here is in Hanks , so I drape it over a chair for a few days, to straighten it out and then drape it over my knees and wind into a ball.have been doing this for many years
I tried this method and it still was a hot tangled mess I got so frustrated and threw away the whole hank of yarn. I’m never buying hanks again. But thanks for the tip. It worked for a little
Thank you so much! I have chairs that go with a high top table, that will be perfect for the job. BTW.. I clearly remember my Grandaddy holding the yarn fir Gramma!

Thank you so much! Last time I had a hank I got it so tangled that it no lie took me longer to untangle it than it did to complete the project.
😂
Yes . Found this video since I just spent 9 hours untangling 😕
Awe sweet memories of being the holder of yarn for both grandma's. One a crocheter & the other a knitter.... I learned to crochet 😀 💖

thank you so much. I was gifted with several hanks of yarn, and now I know how to use them.
Thank you, Spider. So much better than the 3 hours it took me last night to untangle and ball my single hank of hand dyed yarn LOL.
Used to wind it this way but bought a swift and winder which has changed my yarn life! Its so much FUN! :)
Well-done demonstration, FS. Thanks! Nice kitchen, too!
you are a great teacher. Thank-you for your enthusiasum.
Thank you so much. I was given a hank of merino wool. Didn't know how to unravel it. This is so BOSS

I wasted two hanks until I realize I should probably learn how to unwind it. Thank you so much for this video!
Your home is so cutely decorated! I love the color yellow and sunflowers.
Thank you sharing. When I got some yarn like that. I did the same thing. I put the yarn around the chair. To me it was common sense lol. Your the best. You Rock.
Thanks for showing me how to wind a ball of yarn without a buying a contraption.

Oh I adore you 🥰
Thanks so much. I am winding my first hank now. 😘
Great and easy way to rewind a hank! Thank you!
