If I have hanks I take them to the LYS to have them caked. But I have wrapped it over the back of two chairs and balled it old school, I drop the ball an awful lot though 🙈.

I guess I am an old school ball roller. I have even balled skeins, as I get annoyed with the yarn barf and or knots. I haven't really purchased Hanks and don't have a gadget to spin into a cake. Willing to try the center pull old style.

Your old school style combines yarn work and yoga. I don't think I could sit that way for very long

I spent hours as a kid holding yarn between my hands so my mom could wind it into a ball. Now she’s 90 and I plan on having her return the favor by holding my hanks for me as I wind them into balls. Mom would drape the end of the yarn between her fingers when she’d start to wind a ball so it would be a center pull ball. The hook trick was new to me. Think I’ll stay with moms tried-and-true method. I’ve been using it myself for decades and it works well so far.

When i do center pull, i hold onto a few inches at the end when I start winding. I think a winder could be fun, but don't do enough with yarn to justify the cost

The first time I used a hank of yarn...
I successfully created the world's biggest knot.
    😳🙄

Thank you so much for this video! ❤

I did the same. I finally got it undone with my husband help and a few hours. And it was a 50 gram hank....

    • @eileenhaag4822
      @eileenhaag4822 3 роки тому +2

Been there. Done that. I had enough patience to I work the knot up to the last 1/4 of it then I got the scissors and just cut the biggest pieces I could pull out of the knot-mess-monster.
Then I used the joining ends method I found on YT to attach it back together.
Never want to do that again so now I carefully ball up my skein after I remove the paper wrapping.

My dad was 6'4" so his legs hung off the end of the couch when he was laying down. Mom used to wrap the hank around his feet as they hung over the arm of the couch. She is only 4'8" so it was really a perfect height for her to work.

I'm so glad you use the hanks in this video. I have been thinking about buying some of those to try but after watching this I won't. They are just to complicated to deal with. I'll stick with skins, cakes, etc.
I like to ball the yarn the old fashion way. However, I may use the last technique when doing three strands at a time projects. I made a yarn box with a rod in order to hold the yarn balls separated to keep them from tangling together.
Thank you so much for this and your other video's. I have learnt so much from you and so grateful.

Method Nr 2 is what I’ve always used, balls are rounder. Think I learnt it even before I knew how to crochet. My mom often frogged, I helped her- up to where my little hands could hold the ball. Eventually she taught me how to crochet. Good memories!💖

Do all skeins have center pulls? Sometimes i can't find one especially with certain brands. I didn't know any of this and just let my skein flop around like a fish out of water or sat next to my empty top loading washer machine with my yarn in it and the skein couldn't get lost. Then I found out about the center pull skeins it was like eureka....why would they sell skeins without a center pull? Seems mean. LOL I'll buy a hank when I can afford one.
I wonder what Crystal thinks of those new stearing wheel looking ones??

Thanks Crystal, I was old school, but now that I know how, I'll be doing old school center pull. I just love when a ball of yarn stays where you put it - a bit like my kids and dogs!

Thank you, I like the school and my wooden bowl that my brother-in-law made me.

I old school wind my yarn. That's how I was taught and have just kept doing it that way. I will try the center pull on the hook. Once again you taught me something new. YOU ARE WONDERFUL !! Thank you! 🥰😘💗

This was definitely educational. My arms got tired just watching you do that old school but I still to this day do it that way too.🌹
