Fun fact: The person behind Claustrophobic and Autumn Piano is Christian Henson who is the founder of Pianobook and the creator of Labs Soft Piano I am grateful to him for offering such amazing sampled instruments for free EDIT: Winter Felt is made by him as well
I had constantly problems with the software, library not found, samples not found, license invalid etc etc, uninstall, reinstall, download this, verify that, no thanks! I removed anything from LABS from my system now. Fed up with this $h^t!
When i play the soft piano in LABS i get this click sound everytime i press a sertain note & it's kinda annoying. Does some have a solution to get rid of that sound?
My personal favorite use of Claustrophobic is to narrow it's stereo field and then pair it with a brighter piano at a lower level that I push into a wide stereo field and gently flowing reverb - it ends up having this sense of being extremely close with Claustrophobic piano, but then a spacious brightness that fills the space, which for me leads to a really intimate, contemplative place. It takes a bit of mixing so it isn't obviously two pianos, but I find having most of the reverb tail being on a bright, low volume piano makes Claustrophobic shine all the more!
I totally agree with you. I've been saying for ages that the best instruments for making music are the ones you have, not the ones you wish you had. I have had folks wonder why I use an MT-32. It's because I have one, and still find it useful. Same with my music room speakers. I use 2 RCF 12's, supplemented by a couple of tweeters - again, because these are what I have.
Not gonna lie. I used to skip over your videos as soon as you said, "Howdy doody, Buckaroonies!" When I finally gave you a chance, I've come to a point where I look forward to coffee with Cameron every Monday, and make sure to try out whatever new instrument, effect or technique you're showing off, by the end of the day. I've been a denizen of internet audio forums since, well, since forums were a thing... Can't tell you how many times I've had the plugin question. Best answer ever was from mastering engineer John Scrip of Massive Mastering: Use what you need, with the settings you need, when you need it.
Thanks a lot for all this and the inspiration. Unfortunately most of the plugins (autumn, winter, claustrophobic) are not any longer available. Any idea where to find them or alternatives ? Agin many thanks.
Great tips Cam 👍 I already had Glass Piano. I just installed Orchestral Tools and Spindle feels great. I'm just off to try the Decent Sample ones now ... Thanks for these ...
I love that Spitfire sent people to sample Philip Glass' own piano in New York for the LABS Glass Piano, it just sounds like him. Thanks for sharing all these gems. Also, hope you're ok and life is treating you well.
I have FL Studio, and it comes with a beautiful piano already that I use a lot. (Or did until my PC crashed). The stage grand is awesome. I think people mainly need to learn how to use their DAW. You can take the same stage grand, and change the sound of it using some of the plug ins that come with the program. You can have the piano soft, ambient, or whatever. Maybe that is sound design, but I just like seeing what the program can do, because I can't afford to buy extra VSTs and plug ins.
@@nkogliaz Yep! But ones that are stock are also free. I was just trying to point out that you can change the sounds of some of the stock pianos to create new sounding ones. There are some other really nice downloadable free pianos that I would love to try, but forgot which ones. I'll have to see if I can find them and post them here as well.
@@nkogliazI found one. The 1928 vintage grand Steinway from Soundpaint. I actually had the pleasure of playing a real 1928 Steinway. I think the samples they offer are better than the one I played, because the piano was tuned to precision to collect the samples.
The main point here is a good one. Find a nice full-range piano that provides enough control over tone, envelope, etc. Then you can modify it to the musical context. that's why I am not a big fan of all these muted pianos that seem so popular. They are one-trick ponies. maintaining lots of plugins for one-off use is inefficient.
Thought I'd give it a watch even though I tend to stick with Vienna Imperial for almost all my piano needs. Some really interesting stuff here, amazing that they're all free.

Nice one Prof. V, loving your work. Christian Henson is one of the great unsung heroes of our profession, I hadn’t heard Claustrophobic Piano but it sounds and plays wonderful(ly).
I've been making lots of music for the past year or so and I've used basically exclusively free plugins, the only two exceptions being the analog lab and gentleman piano that came with my Arturia $100 min keyboard and I haven't *needed* either of those once.

I only recently started to mess around with music production and your content and little "homework" assignments have been an incredible source of inspiration! :) Quick question: what is your professional opinion on the free Soundpaint 1928 Vintage Grand Steinway?
I've found three free plugins that sound fairly good: DSK The Grand MDA Piano Iowa Piano The last one seems to have more dynamics than the other two. Any of the three is good enough to be going on.
Everything you said in the beginning is true, however, Spitfire Audio has a collection of free vsts that vastly improved a few songs I created in Ableton Live Lite using only the stock MIDI instruments.
