  • Week four of my weekly slowstitch-along for 2024. This week's prompt is 'choices' and it's more of an exercise than an attempt to make something beautiful. I suspect some of you may be a little freaked out by it but I hope you give it a go. 😉
Here is the playlist of all the videos in the series, including the two part tutorial for the stitch journal

Oh yes, a coming together as a group of stitchers sharing time, space and resources-- would be a lovely community. Isolation doesn't usually bother me, but there is an appeal to the sounds of sharing with like-minded friends

A few years ago, I learned that we make at least 35,000 choices every day! It’s freeing to not have to make some choices. I’m glad you chose to twine your hair; it looks beautiful and it’s so appropriate for you! I love your scrappy string quilt and the fact that Joey was the “designer” of it. What a wonderful part of your history and such great memories for you both.

I don’t have much of a stash either. I went to some secondhand stores and looked for pillowcases made of 100% cotton. I bought a variety of shades. I also found a couple of linen napkins, and embroidery floss. I used tea and onion skins to dye some of the pillow case fabric. So, increased my variety of fabric for very little money. It was a fun little treasure hunt!

Love this piece and that random can be so fun. What I see is an amazing base to stitch on, some appliqué. I see a landscape … blue sky with bit of pink, mountains, a river, more land and a grove of flowers.
I’ll try not to be naughty and make a piece allowing it to just be itself without a bunch of added top stitches/appliqué’s.
Have a great week everyone 🫶🏼

Years ago I belonged to a quilt group. We were made up of a lot of a lot of different styles. I made string quilt blocks that I was so happy with because I used so many of my scraps. They all were so surprised that I would share these. Haha. One lady trying to be nice said " this could be so nice if the colors matched" hahaha

I had a great time with this one. I had prepared a huge bag last year, of all kinds of strips, for scrappy squares. ArtyFartyAnnie had made a mini quilt. I did not use very many and I had two huge bags. I just closed my eyes and pulled each one out, some were too wide, and I just folded them too. I did not mind the look of my square, I had a lot of variety in mine. I think it helped me that I did not look at them! LOL. But I must say I had to trim three sides. All in all, it was very good. Thank you, Kathryn.

I find this theme really interesting, because I only started thinking about it when I created my instagram account in 2021. I possess almost no planning skills in what art is concerned and I never thought about it, until I read comments and posts on instagram about planning and giving up control.
For example, when I made both rice bags, I didn’t do what you did: the previous layout of all fabrics, that’s why I never use that invisible stitch (I forgot the name in English) to attach them. I choose the base fabric and then I start adding bits of fabric or lace randomly. Before I started making the bags, I chose a huge variety of fabrics and then I would look at one and if I liked it, I would stitch it. And if I liked two, I would think: I will stitch this one next. But the thing is that when I went to get it, I had lost interest and I would choose another one. And both bags (and my books and pouches) were all made like that: in the moment. Choosing the stitches is the same, I can’t plan. The same thing when I crochet or even make a paper book or paint.
And I started to think about why it was like that. I am the most disciplined person in the world. I have schedules for everything, I never get late to anything, I never got late to school in my life, I do all my chores way before they could be in fact done, I have my house all organized, and it hit me: is it because I am so disciplined and organized that I need a bit of chaos in my art practice? Because my art room looks like it belongs to a different house! Last week, I spent 4 days organizing everything, because I couldn’t see my table!
I guess that my disciplined side needs a chaotic side to balance it, I don’t know, because I don’t know anyone who likes any kind of art, so I never discussed this with anyone.
But I love my disciplined side. I feel comfortable and happy the way I am. I was always like that, even as a child. Not once did my parents need to tell me to do my homework, because that was the first thing I did when I got home!
    I write a lot, don’t I?😂
    Well, thanks for reading it🙏
I would like to add that I love your hair. I used to have really long hair too, not as long as yours, and I loved it, but my hair is really wavy and wild and I lost patience and cut it and I am now happier, but I still admire ladies with long hair.
Also, again, maybe because I love random, messy pieces, I really liked this piece.
And, finally, I would like to ask: is it Kathryn or Catherine? Because I see both ways, and I like to call people by their name 🩵💚🤎♥️💜💙🩷🧡🤍💛🤗😘🌹

Thank you Alexandra you do write a lot but it's always interesting 😉 You are blessed with a good eye and a trust in your own intuition because your work is beautiful. It's interesting that you say maybe it's a balance to your self discipline elsewhere in your life. Maybe I should have asked you to plan a piece right down to the last stitch then stick to the plan to the letter. 😂 My name is spelt Kathryn, but my whole life I have been called all kinds of variations, all the possible spellings of my name, all the diminutives, Kate, Katie, Kath, Kathy, even Ryn by one of my cousins. That is why Hans invented k3n, so had one simple name which is literally said as it's spelt. But it's just added one more name to the list! I don't mind though. 😂❤️❤️❤️

i loved this one quite a lot! probably because the rules are simple: choose fabrics by shape only and get stitching. i am easily overwhelmed by new projects, especially by planning them, but this one is very easy to simply start :) now if only i had more scraps...
on the theory (and why i think it works, even with the less-flashy fabrics): by choosing a consistent fabric shape, you've given yourself a consistent texture (even if the colors are determined to fight you 😅😂). your strips remind me of hatching (as in cross-hatching), which is one of my favorite art shading styles ✏️

Have to think that the results for a lot of people are going to look a lot like mine, since my theme for the whole project is to base it all on textures and not worry about what it looks like to other people. Worrying about colours and such has been a block for me with so many crafts, so slow stitching and doing things that feel good without caring what they look like has been fun.

I'll definitely be cutting my fabric strips shorter to avoid pulling out the same strip over and over 😂 in saying that, I really like how yours turned out 👏 and i love the string quilt you made for Joey - the photo says it all 🥰

I just taught a class this past Saturday where my students were given prompts which eliminated most of their personal choice. They were having a great time and making fabulous works. As soon as we got to a point where they had complete control, many started to flag. They got caught up in the angst of "will it look good". As much as I try to teach "play", there are always some folks who can't remember how to let go and just enjoy.

It's the hardest thing to teach grown ups I think. I used to threaten my Slowstitch group in England that one month, I would have them work on a piece all day, using my materials and at the end of the day, we would go out into the carpark and burn them all. 😱😂 Sadly never got to do it, but it's the spirit of those mandalas drawn in sand or chalk dust. All about the process, not the end product. 😉❤️

This is going to be a real challenge. I have always done patchwork and quilting all by hand but also always followed all the rules and instructions that come with that. It is no longer pleasure to me and feel that as this is my 70th year I want to break free from rules & rulers and “GO ROGUE.” However I have to admit it’s harder than I thought, I doubt myself all the time and am afraid of making mistakes. I’m looking forward to the chance to stop overthinking things and just get on and produce something. So thank you K3n for showing this and I’d love to know how you made the transition from traditional quilting to this wonderful slow stitching, if that’s not too personal.

I am now obviously in a different place as I want to follow what everyone is doing as a result of this channel, and as it grows, I will have to find a balance between keeping up with it all (which I love to do) and still having time and head space for my own creativity and planning content for the videos. I don't think your piece is ugly at all. It looks like weather worn driftwood. The only bit I would struggle with is the pink. It is odd because normally, I love a pop of colour among faded ones but here, I think that the pink strip blocks the flow of the colours.
I really enjoy the choosing part and see it as integral/essential to the finished piece - (does that make me a control freak?) so It's going to be a very interesting (and scary) exercise! I will have to remember to breathe!!!

I loved this lesson! And I laughed multiple times during your process...having felt so many of the feelings you express as you pick...and don't choose...and stick with the program without cheating....golly gee...not sure if I can do this without a cheat or two! I am excited to try! Making choices and getting embroiled in the process is one of the things I love about slow stitching...making it up as I go along and changing things midstitch liberates me. Measuring and 'exactness' and I do not get along. And, also, the more of a strict agenda I have, the more stressed I feel. So doing this exercise will be revealing in many ways. I think it could be actually quite beautiful....or maybe not...but it will be fun! Thank you!

My pleasure. Isn't it interesting that to some, a strict agenda or plan is like a security blanket and to others it's stress making? I think I used to be very much the strict plan type which attracted me to 'proper' patchwork and quilting but at one point, it became like a strait jacket so I rebelled and went the opposite way. Thank you for giving me food for thought and I will talk more about it in future videos ❤️
