Weekly Slowstitch 2024 - Week 15 - Solar Eclipse and the Stacked Running Stitch
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 кві 2024
- This week we take inspiration from the solar eclipse that will be visible today 8 April across much of the United States, Mexico and part of Canada. I hope that the rest of us who cannot get to not look at it directly in person 😉 can share in some of the excitement. ❤️

Thank you for watching, happy stitching! ❤️

Lovely. Thank you : )
Thank you for this week’sproject ,I have been able to keep up since the beginning and have had much enjoyment trying different stitch projects from your other videos and wonky Wednesday - just finishing my envelope pouch .
I have auditioned my fabrics for this one and was lucky to see the solar eclipse yesterday but here in northern Ontario we had a 85- 90% but the temperature did noticeably drop - great opportunity for us❤
My pleasure, happy you are enjoying it 😊
Budweiser commercials with the horses always used to make me cry!
Anything with horses gets me too ❤️
My hand is up, yes me! I am such a big crier over here. When the sad parts happen in movies my kids all look at me, which I think they use to avoid being emotional themselves lol.
Whoa! I love that piece with the “sun” like image and the stacked running stitch! LOVE! (Thanks for the shout out, btw. Back atchya!)
I always cry when watching "Free Willy", it's a family movie, made in 1993, with a song " Will you be there" by Michael Jackson at the end.
But I sometimes cry watching ads, too, so... 😂
Thank you for another great inspiration and for the laughs 😅
Oh yes that one gets me too 🥰
Fabulous! I want to copy everything you do! 🥰❤️👍👍😊
Oh my! It is 3 am and you have made me laugh out loud! My 3 little pups al woke and came to check n the nut in the room. I will be around the 97% of the eclipse here in Texas. I have started using slow stitch on my art quilt, which I was truly hating beforehand. I believe it is now my best piece so far! Thank you so much!
My pleasure, so pleased you are enjoying your quilt. Please say sorry to the pups that I made you wake them up. 😁❤️❤️❤️
I love this!!
Thank you 😊
My Fathers name is Hilton -from England. (From a town on the hill) We once had a castle Hylton in the 1600’s. My ancestors came to America mid 1600’s.
Then we all became mongrels with all sorts of immigrants. Scots, Irish, German, French. My great grandmother from Scotland smoked a pipe in the outhouse to cover the smell.
My desire to hand stitch came from my mother’s side - PA Dutch immigrants (German).
Your great granny sounds amazing 😁❤️
Heerlijk ontbijtkoek😂 geweldige solar eclipse❤
I am happy to know you recommend Marion....she is Fabulous. Her utube is Marion's World
❤
Yes, she is wonderful ☺️
This is a lovely interpretation of a major event. Your cloth choices and stitches were perfect and how clever that we have done 3 solar samples.
I love not only your demo of slow stiches, but also your interesting narrative as you sow.
You are such a hive of knowledge. Thank you for you contribution to the stitching community.
Perfect project for today. I already have my onion skins saved up for Friday. Looking forward to seeing your technique. Thank you
Hard working woman’s hands….beautiful artistic hands 😊❤
Thank you so much 😀
Beautiful! I’m very new to your channel, about a month or so, and I’m so glad I found you. I have been reluctant to do handwork as I’m not very precise, but this!…I love it! I even did my first little piece to try and really enjoy it. I very much enjoy listening to you as you embroider. Thank you so much for opening my eyes to slow stitching!
Thank you so much and a belated welcome, I am so happy you found me 🥰
Wow … running stitch really is versatile. What a beautiful piece. Thank you as ever for these videos. ❤️🙏Looking forward to watching your onion eco-dyeing and, indeed, your pocket construction.
Oh my… i think Stella and you have become my first ever youtube crush! Stella for the sweet snoring (obviously!) and you for all the wonderful videos and your beautiful stitchings! Oeh…ontbijtkoek: love it! I am laughing WITH you Kathryn!!😀🍀💖
😂😂😂 we laugh with each other 😉❤️❤️❤️
I can cry at anything 😢Wizard of Oz, Lion King . I will have been round the sun 74 times in July😮I love the word catywompus,😂❤😊
I admit that I don't always have time to watch the whole videos through which I understand defeats some of the purpose of slow stitch...however, I have four kids, a farm, and a full time job! Today I'm home sick and it was delightful to stitch along with you. You remind me so much of my mother-in-law Fran, with your little Yorkshire sayings and the way you ramble off on tangents then back on again and chuckle at your euphemisms! Charming and makes me grateful that, after my marriage ended, I am able to keep Fran in my life!
Hello Stephanie, Fran is lovely so I am delighted to remind you of her. Sounds like you have your hands full 😁❤️
What a lovely way you have shown us to mark a solar eclipse, who would have thought, great idea, thank you. I’m so looking forward to the onion skin dyeing
Finally getting around to this prompt … I’m a big boob when it comes to some movies. Shoot, I even cry when I see commercials involving small children in glasses, lol.
I loved do8 g the rays in the running stitch. Amazes me every week that even this week’s hour and 40 minutes went by so fast.
I am glad I am not the only one 😁♥️
I wonder how many of us looked up when you said "look up"!
I was able to watch the eclipse today in Texas! Very exciting!
I 100% looked up! I had only just looked away for a second. 😂
And I didn't even realise until now how significant me saying 'look up' was for this week's theme 😁♥️
@@k3n.clothtales Hi K3n! How fun that "Look up" had a double meaning!
While watching this video, I was looking through my scraps when you said look up. Made me chuckle! And just hours earlier I did look up at the solar eclipse. Thanks for the inspiration. "Look up" will be written on this page of my journal!
I looked up and laughed outloud!!! I was one of those stitching to kathryn’s voice! Lol
My vocabulary has expanded with words like slap-dash and lazy tailor. Who would have guessed!! Thank you K3n😂
I too have learnt lots of new words from our community, cattywampus being my current favourite 😁♥️
I didn't even know how to spell caddywambus😂
😂❤️
Yay, it's 8 p,m on Monday evening here in New Zealand so I can watch Kathryn before I go to sleep tonight 😴
Here in the Pacific Northwest we didn't experience the eclipse at all. We are too far away and had complete cloud cover. I absolutely cry at the movies, in books, even in ads like you. There are movies I won't watch for that very reason. Our daughter was traumatized by ET, poor thing. I've been fascinated by women's pockets of the past too. I look forward to learning how to make my own. 😊
The very worse ones for me are with animals and my daughter Lily has inherited it. War Horse is unbearable for both of us, though we still watch it and sob ourselves into sodden heaps. My prototype pocket outer is stitched, when I figure out the lining and binding, I will make a video. 😉❤️
That sounds brilliant 😊 I'm very interested in pockets.
4 am here in NY! Good morning Dear Kathryn❤. I am in the path of the eclipse and will hopefully be able to emulate the colors that I see this afternoon.
I am a BIG crier over movies. The sadder the better for me! I hope you have a wonderful week! I appreciate you.
Thank you so much, I hope you had a good view ☀️
Did you get to see it. Our weather cleared up at 130 we were able to watch
I’m on vacation in Arizona and the eclipse was only partial here so when I get back home I have it in my mind how it will look. Can’t wait to try the new stitches!
Hope you are having a lovely time ❤️
Just lovely, thank you! Enjoy the precious few days with your daughter.
Thank you 😊
This is so lovely! And I wanted to thank you for mentioning Mirjam, she is so inspiring - as you are
Thank you 😊
I cry when watching certain movies and make sure I do not watch them when my husband is home😊. I hate it when I get to the room I was heading to and then forget what it was I was going to do.
It sometimes does you good to have a cry at something fictional... Though I am not an attractive cryer, snotty nose and red eyes, not like the beautiful women in the movies when they cry 😭😂❤️
@@k3n.clothtalesmy eyes go red and puffy just thinking about crying!😂 I am so happy that we are both June '65 babies. Makes me feel great knowing I have a twin on the other side of the planet. ❤
@@lindadarbyshire7598 hello twinny 😊❤️
I love that I learn about slow stitch and a thousand other random things from your videos! (And yes, some movies and commercials make me cry.)
Yay perfect timing! I will enjoy watching while sipping my earl grey tea 🩶
Ooh! I did hope that you might introduce a project involving the sun this week! I will enjoy seeing your tutorial later - an absolute treat when I am resting, later in the day that brings such joy and contentment and I will look forward to stitching during the week, and thinking of others in the FB group stitching too. Thank you k3n 💛a sunny yellow heart today x
Thank you Lesley, I haven't been into the group yet and I am really looking forward to seeing what everyone is making. ☀️

The sun has got his hat on...hip hip hip hip hurray
The sun has got his hat on and he's coming out to play.
Love your eclipse
Thanks Gwyn, I will be singing that all day 😂♥️♥️♥️
I’m in Massachusetts, we had about 95% totality on the eclipse. It really was amazing to see. Love your interpretation with cloth. Thank you. Katherine, no worries about American geography, most Americans can’t even point out what state is where on a map. 😂😂. You are spot on with going into a room for something and not knowing what you went into that room for. I do that several times a day. We call those senior moments in the US.
That's great Sue, so pleased you got to see it. I couldn't possibly comment on American geography knowledge, but it is a huge country to learn 😁♥️
Delightful, totality delightful 🪡🧵😎☀️🌑
A beautiful solar eclipse K3n!
Thank you 😊
I love your Dutch pronunciation. Totally understand what you meant.
Well that's the main thing 😜 dank je wel 😁❤️
Enjoyed this! Thank you for opening my eyes to the effective use of stacked running stitches.
I just love your Eclipse and so I thought I would make one and of course it had to be EXACTLY the same....I pulled out all the bits of fabric I had and set about sewing. I couldn't find any purple/violet so decided to use blue - it just wasn't it....I then joined your FB page and there they were lots and lots of Eclipses in various beautiful alternative colours - now why didn't I think of that!!!! So thank you k3n and FB for opening my eyes xx
So glad you joined the Facebook group, they are an amazing bunch of lovely people ♥️
Here in Lexington ky we will get 96% of the eclipse. It will probably be cloudy ⛅️
Super l'éclipse de lune. Merci ❤❤❤❤❤
Loved the stitches and video did today thanks.
How many spectacular ideas your imagination stores!!! I'm very impressed!
🌹
Thank you so much 😀
Dziękujemy.
Thank you so much ♥️
Thank you for this beautiful total solar eclipse that I can actually watch. I'm about to experience the real thing at home, in Kingston Ontario Canada. In a few minutes it will be dark, but being old and having a prosthetic eye lens I'm afraid of using the flimsy glasses to look at the famous corona. So thank you for being so thoughtful and creating this lovely stitched solar eclipse. Enjoy your daughter's visit. ❤
Thank you Vivian, yes indeed be careful of your eyes and enjoy creating a beautiful cloth version instead. ♥️
i'm sure you've found out by now, but corona as in crown! tickled by how easily corolla(sp?) rolls off the tongue, but i did like picturing the sun driving a toyota corolla like some old greek myth. the eclipse was stunning-i always thought pictures of the eclipse were enhanced somehow, but instead i found out that the pictures couldn't do it justice. really beautiful, i feel so lucky that i got to see one from my backyard.
i swear i didn't cry for movies until about high school, when i let myself go for a main character dying, and i've never been able to stop since!
thank you again for your company as i attach a collar onto my project. they're by far the most stressful part, they're so prone to wonkiness right where it's least wanted. i've never wanted the freedom of slowstitch more 😅
Yes I can't believe I got it wrong but the image of the Toyota is funny 😁
Interesting to hear you talk about pockets. I work with some traveller women and they talk of their mothers, grandmothers having 'beady pockets'. These were pockets onto which they stitched beads and buttons and medals... swapped and found in the places they visited.... almost a visual history. I'm hoping to make one.
Those sound wonderful thank you so much ♥️
I'm home with Covid and kept pausing the video because I wasn't sure who in my house was snoring...haha! My trusty hound is by my side and I also have two kids home sick...but you've solved the mystery by explaining that it's your pet snoring!
I am sorry, I hope you aren't too poorly with it. Feel better soon. Yes Stella is a great snorer, when my husband is away, she sleeps on my bed and she snores louder than he does. 😂❤️
Очень интересно, спасибо!💐

Hi 👋🏼 I’m just watching the video and you mentioned water ship down, I sure did cry in that one! When the song “bright eyes” came on 😭 if someone is crying, I cry, there’s nothing I can do to stop it.
That's the most beautiful song 🐇❤️
@@k3n.clothtales
It is, it still touches me when ever I hear it and my thoughts of Hazel ❤️🐰
Oh don't, now you have set me off ' and he left his body lying in the ditch because he didn't need it anymore ' 😭😭😭♥️

Oh no! I had to you tube that part with bright eyes and now I’m off! 😢
The solar eclipse! What a brilliant idea! 👍🏻
Another yay. Just dyed some fabric today with passionfruit skins, which will suit the project perfectly .thank you so much.
What colour do you get from these skins?

Kathryn…I was traumatized by the “movie” Old Yeller. When I was in first grade, my elementary school played film strips for an after school activity. I cried for a week. Mind you this was in 1964 and I grew up with no television in the house.
I so feel for 1964 you. ❤️❤️❤️
I am in path of the eclipses but cloudy and so I can just take a nap. lol. Storms are also on the way. Oh joy. Stitch stitch and relax. I am in Tx. Weatherman said Maine was the only place with a clear view. Thank you for this sew along. Blessings ❤
I am sorry it's cloudy 😔❤️
@@k3n.clothtales what a hoot. It’s over and the clouds parted. I am north of Dallas and their clouds parted and gave them a good view there. It got very dark. Now to get through the next two days of storms. Some tornado warning out already. Well if you live here that’s what happens. Now for some sewing. Blessings.
Stay safe, happy stitching ❤️
Dallas had lots of sunshine, perfect for totality.
@@judithgrace8359 how wonderful ☺️
Another great project, thanks. The movie that always gets me is my all time favourite...Beaches. I always tear up when Bette Midler sings 'Wind Beneath My Wings' ❤
That's a great tear jerker indeed and Bette is wonderful, also in the Rose 🌹
Haha! I don’t get all the ones in the middle right either! As you noted, it’s sort of an obscenely large country.
Well that makes me feel better 😂♥️
Love this solar eclipse, so pretty.
Oh yes😢 i cry … cry at commercials( altho dont watch much telly any more … rather watch you tubes )😂 hearing a song, reading a book, seeing things in nature as God winks … thinking of someone or a remark … animals … guess about everything … sometimes happy cry 😊 thankYou for all you do ❤
Thank you Vikki, I will try not to make you cry at my videos, unless it's happy tears 😁❤️❤️❤️
Had no black scraps, so had to resort to a circle of navy from an old cashmere sock that is beyond darning and I’m turning into an eye pillow.. perhaps we could have an Earth based theme next week?
We could work our way through the entire universe 😁❤️
I’ll have to do me with this one, no eclipse in South Africa 😮
Going to date piece as to eclipse?🇺🇸 USA veteran. Never would have thought to stitch like you are. Really like the rays 😊and looks realistic💜
I remember watching the countdown to the last eclipse on the TV and running out into the garden with my children...and being really shocked by how cold it got so quickly in the eerie twilight. It made me realise how dependant we are on the sun.
We are on day three of a crazy gale here and It was lovely to snuggle down and watch you stitch while listening to Stellar's (?spelling?) sweet snores.
I cry at films. Forest Gump was agony but the one thing that is guaranteed to.finish me off is the Christmas Coke ad of the lorry..."Holidays are coming" because my daughter always got so excited when it came on.
Hope you have a lovely time with Lily.
Mary x
Thank you Mary, it's pretty awful here too, wind and rain. Stay warm ❤️❤️❤️
I love this. Oh yes I cry too. Coffee comercials...
A big one for me is the Disney film Bambi. That one always pulls at my heart strings. The incredible journey was another for me. When the animals come running to the family....I am getting chills just thinking about it. Thank you for the fun❤
Oh no, Bambi, I can't bear it. My son Joey was watching it when he was around 5 or 6 and I left the room for something, when I came back in he was sobbing, heartbroken. Poor little lad, I had left him alone for the most traumatic part. 😔 He is now nearly 22 and still a big softy. And he has forgiven me for his Bambi trauma. 😉♥️
It's a tough one. Disney knew how to get emotion from us. For sure
Hello! I’m late 😣, I know, but at least I didn’t miss the class 😂
I love that running stitch, I tried something like that some time ago, but I must do it again.
I never cry on films, in spite of feeling deeply touched and moved. Unfortunately that’s seen as a sign of not being sensitive 😐
And, yes, you’re not alone, I go to a room, I forget what I was going to do, I go back to where I was, I come back again and …. I remember 😂
♥️🤎💙💚💛🤍💜🧡🩵🩷
Hello Alexandra, I am very happy to see you here ❤️❤️❤️
Super!❤
Awesome!!!
Thanks
Thank you so much 😊
Beautiful ❤❤
Thank you 😊.
Great project!
Merci une fois encore c’est très intéressant.
I love your interpretation of the solar eclipse. I was fortunate enough to travel to Ohio from Nevada to see the solar eclipse. It was an amazing experience to see the light dim and get dark. And to feel the temperature change enough to put a jacket on.
I am so pleased you got to see it 😊
Old Yeller. The earliest I remember crying at a film. 60 years ago.
It's the very definition of a tear jerker 😉❤️
I cry at ads, movies and books. I've even teared up at some things on FB
I am glad I am not the only one 😉❤️
Enjoy your videos it’s like setting and sticking with a friend . Thanks so much for sharing. . I’m in the north east in New England in the USA in the state of Connecticut . Their a lot of people here that are very interested in the Solar Eclipse
Gearing up here in Ohio for the solar eclipse today. We are directly in the path! Very exciting.
I hazard to say that your USA geography is better than 99% of my American fellows UK geography.
😁♥️♥️♥️
As always another inspiring idea….. loving the pocket book also !
Oops so I can ….not the same though🤗
The eclipse was visible in Canada as well, at least in my part of the country. Unfortunately it was mainly cloudy at the time but I did see a silver covering the sun at the begining and at the end. Thanks for another great week project!
Thank you for being so generous with your ideas and your knowledge. I am so enjoying this series. You may know of this book but it is a good one for wordsmiths and textile makers. "Rigamaroles and Ragamuffins: Unpicking words we derive from textiles" by Elinor Kapp is a nonfiction reference book about the etymology of textile related words. It was published in 1988 in the UK and so may be out of print but I found a used copy a number of years ago and continue to enjoy it. I thought you might enjoy it too.
Thank you for that, I didn't know it, I will try to find it secondhand, it sounds wonderful ❤️
Ohmigosh! So I'm not the only one! All they have to do is add violins to a soundtrack, and my tear ducts overflow. I'll never ever live down crying over a suiting commercial (I kid you not)... My daughters have been threatening ever since to put a relevant comment on my gravestone...😂
😂 I believe it, years ago there was an advert for the Yellow Pages, an elderly gentleman ringing round book shops asking for a book called Fly Fishing by JR Hartley. When he eventually found a copy and gave his name to have it reserved, he was JR Hartley. I don't know why but it made me cry every time. I am filling up now just thinking about it 😭😭😭😂😂😂❤️
I remember that advert very clearly - very moving 😢
I look forward to creating this eclipse with fabric. I am in Oregon and not really in the path of the eclipse today so I will enjoy creating my own fabric eclipse.
Have fun Leona ♥️
Very enjoyable. Looking forward to the onion dying. I haven't done it for 2 or 3 years and I have several gallon bags of onion skins!
Wow, then you are all set 😁♥️
I love this block! Thank you.. My daughter and her family have traveled about 3 hours to see the eclipse..
I hope they get a clear view 😊❤️
Hi. I've not yet finished watching (in fact I'm only at the beginning) but I want to say something. I like eclipses. Probably because they look like a miracle, but still it's possible to explain how it works, with the sun and the moon (or the moon and the shadow of Earth if it's a lunar eclipse). In the Summer of 1999 there was one I went to see, together with my youngest son, in the North of France. We saw it from a camping-site at Le Havre, together with many others who came there especially to see this eclipse! Very special! 🌚
I hope you had a wonderful time with your daughter.
Thank you Barbara, we did. We made her journal and she will be home again this weekend to do some more creating in it. ♥️
Time with grown children is precious. Mine are married and have families of their own, so one on one time with them is rare and special. Enjoy.💕
Beautiful piece. Hope you had a lovely weekend with your daughter. Looking forward to the eco dying. Love Tineke
Thank you Tineke, we had a great time and bonus, she's coming home again next weekend too. 🥰
Enjoy!
C'est le pull que vous avez sur la vidéo " wonky log cabin" introduction. Merci ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
C'est en anglais 'double moss stitch ' 😉♥️
Double point de riz en français je pense
This is really beautiful and so was the other piece you showed. There is a clip of The Daily Show here on UA-cam that does a bit on the eclipse and who is the star, the sun or the moon, I found it pretty humorous. I definitely have cried during all the movies you mentioned and many others😄. Will be making my 74th trip around the sun this year. We can add a flip to our journals to include week 53. Looking forward to Friday’s video and onion dyeing, haven’t tried that yet. I’ve done avocado, tea, coffee and some synthetic type dyeing. Off to select some fabrics to try this one. TFS Kathryn. Love your videos.
Thank you 😊
The last solar eclipse in America I spent with my sister and her daughter, it was a hot summer day and we drove a couple hours to see the total eclipse in a small town called Lugoff, South Carolina. The town graciously opened the town park for out of towners to park and picnic. We had a fun excursion! My sister has since passed away, I'm so happy we decided to see the eclipse together. Can't wait to get started on this entry for my book. We only get a partial eclipse at my home today , too far to drive in one day.
Speaking of junk Journals, I want to make one of junk mail! My recycle bin gets full of junk mail every week!
A junk journal with junk mail would be great ❤️
I am in the middle of the US. Central Missouri
Did you get to see it? 😊
Oh..wow, my journey around the sun is also in June. June 1st. I’ve had several more laps around though. About to be just over 60 for me.
You are not far ahead of me, I will be 59 on the 3rd June. ♥️
Kathryn
Your slow stitch this week is very appropriate for what’s happening in our part of the world. I’m in Texas(U.S.) and will reach 92% totality in our area during the solar eclipse. Your work is lovely as usual. Love Stella’s snoring-so comforting and real.
Thank you, I wanted to 'join in' with the excitement. ❤️
❤
Well Kathryn,
Just wanted to update you on today’s events. Darkness was darker than dusk due to overcast skies. Eerily quiet outside. The birds in the trees were quiet and our cats were calm, but we were with them in the catio(enclosed patio). Darkness was about 4 minutes, once eclipse was over the birds started to chirp and a breeze started. It was a very
interesting event.
Thank you so much, it sounds very atmospheric. Also loving that you have a catio, I won't tell Fredfred or he will demand one for himself 😁♥️
😂
I'm also a big crybaby. My kids laugh at me all the time. 😂
I think it's a parent's job to make their kids laugh. And to embarrass them whenever possible. 😂❤️
I finally finished a project at the same time as k3n, only to realize that I had settled so deeply into my task that I only heard Running Stitch. Will have to do something else using Stacked Running Stitch.
😁❤️❤️❤️
