8:12 Yeah, it'a sounds like a Western because Ennio Morricone literally defined how Westerns sound like. No other composer has impacted an entire genre the way he has.
exact words I was thinking I ought to point out and here it is. lol Of course! When you hear something defined as Western, its Ennio who made it so. Beautiful piece. Beautiful movie.
Weird how the popularity is even around today; I remember being a kid and the popularity of this and other Morricone Western music had the same popularity; timeless.
This is not classical, it is epic and orchestral though. Metallica did make a cover on Ecstasy of Gold but it was the Fields of the Nephelim who composed a cover on Morricone's Harmonica Man from the movie Once Upon A Time In The West.
One particular habit of Morricone, especially in his cooperation with Sergio Leone, that distinguishes him from most film composers, is that he often wrote music based on the script alone, before even a single scene was shot - and he and Leone understood each other so well that Leone occasionally changed the pacing of a scene to have it match with Morricone's music. Where others compose music to simply enhance the scene, Morricone distilled the scene itself into music.

The Danish national symphony orchestra is by far and away the best orchestra there is for movie music in my humble opinion! I spend many hours watching and listening to this fabulous group of multi talented performers and it never gets boring.
I have since learned from watching many reviews of this musical score that the conductor is from the Minneapolis Orchestra. I live in MN and I definitely need to attend one of her concerts. I “borrowed” the following from another person’s review but I think this was some excellent information … “”The conductor here is an American "guest" conductor for this concert. Sarah Hicks is the principal conductor of the Minneapolis Orchestra, graduate Magna Cum Laud with a BA degree in music composition from Harvard University. Sarah is highly sought after as a "guest" conductor the world over and has worked with dozens of orchestras all over the word in both hemispheres. What does a conductor do? In this case Sarah chose all of the music for this concert which centered on Ennio Morricones' Spaghetti Western movies sound tracks. She spent hours studying the entire score, making notes as she went along that she would later share with the musicians during rehearsal, She then rehearsed the Orchestra and choir sharing her vision for the various songs, what the dynamics would be, play softy here, a bit more fortissimo (with force) there, establishing what the tempo will be, applying her leadership to inspire these very "Top Shelf" musicians to project her vision of the music and concert. Sarah does have a series of UA-cam educational videos addressing this very question that you asked: "What does a conductor do?'" She is quite an impressive young lady, very talented and, I feel quite gifted!””
Operatic treatment. Love Harmonica's theme and how it plays together with Frank's bad guy theme. When those 2 have their fi al showdown, both themes are played together and they fit like a glove. Chyanne's theme music is very representative of a man on a horse. The female leads theme music is achingly beautiful. It is also used as the closing credits music. Way to go, Ennio!!!!
Ennio Morricone is one of the most innovative composer of XX century. It's a pleasure to listen to his music. Thank you for react to this magnificent piece of music.😊❤
Yes, the Wah-way is part of the original score, performed by an operatic Mezzo-soprano,; the Soprano voice is also in the original. The first two flutes are a recorder and an ocarina.
IMHO Ennio Morricone is the Puccini of our era. All of his sound tracks are terrific. My favorite of his melodies are the love theme from Once Upon a Time in America (Deborah's Theme) and Gabriels Oboe (the Mission) are among the most beautiful melodies of the 20th century. Vocalist Sarah Brightman convinced Morricone to allow her to set lyrics to the theme to create her own song, "Nella Fantasia" - a favorite of crossover singers with Operatic skills. The whole soundtrack from Once Upon a Time in the West is a work of art, the main theme just gorgeous.
This piece has given me chills every time I have heard it. I get goosebumps. It's so simple and sparse yet dramatic, full, and rich. The way it starts is so unique. the instrument palette is very diverse and effective. IMO it's perfect. And it's the way it is because they had no budget for the soundtrack. 🤯
In the first one there was an instrument for each character , the flute for the Good, an ocarina for the Bad, and human voice for the ugly , and you can hear them in the movie accordingly the character on the screen.
9:12 I'm in my 50s and never really paid any attention to the Spaghetti Westerns, but watched a couple in recent years, including this one: they are amazing (duh)! The scene of the "ecstasy of the gold" must have been epic, back in the day, in the theatre, which such a score.
People need to realize how important movie soundtracks are. They make or break a film. A great score elevates any film to another level and make it that much more enjoyable to watch. The music for the spaghetti westerns make the 3 incredible films even more incredible.

Had Morricone been an American he would have had a stack of Oscars, including for The Mission and Once Upon A Time In America, but the Academy likes to take care of their own. Of his six nominations, five were for US movies, ignoring the vast number of European movies for which he deserved to win. In the end the Academy was shamed into giving him an honorary Oscar and then the "oh, you're going to die" Academy Award for The Hateful Eight, which wasn't even deserved.
@@mournblade1066 It was wonderful use of the music considering the "The Hateful Eights" was simply a retelling of the "The Thing" against a Western background.

The flute is an Ocarina! And the "Wah Wah" lady is one of the best Mezzo-sopranos in the World! American Conductor, Sarah Hicks only works when she want to and feel for it, so it is joy to have her also, for this occasion!! This Concert has been seen at least 23 mill. times and a year before he died, Ennio Morricone gave a Concert in Copenhagen. I would have loved for him to listen to this performance!
Bravo! The globular flute that plays at the beginning of the piece is called "ocarina" which is part of a large family in various keys and was invented at the beginning of the twentieth century in Budrio di Bologna in Italy. Ciao
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was the final part of a trilogy of Sergio Leone films; all three were scored by Morricone. Masterpiece in film making and scoring. The Ecstasy of Gold is an iconic piece of music, you can hear it everywhere (even in Modelo beer commercials). Every time I hear it, it ends up bouncing around in my head for days. Also, can you imagine being a (I am assuming) classically trained singer then be asked to sing "wah wah" for a performance?
Italian director (Sergio Leone) hires his childhood friend and classmate (Ennio Morricone) to be film’s composer. “Spaghetti western” indeed, 1960s Italian interpretation of late 19th century American southwest.
Ecstasy of Gold! You missed the reference to the quote. "Blondie: You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
LOVE this music! Absolutely amazing & unmatched, in my opinion. The 3 pieces of music from this soundtrack that are a MUST are 'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' , 'The Trio' , & 'The Ecstasy of Gold.' Glad you heard 2 of them. I really enjoyed this.
I agree. Once Upon A Time in The West is an absolute masterpiece. I believe the only reason why the movie got (undeservedly) less recognition in the US was because Peter Fonda played the villain: That didn't please the audience because people were used to the actor portraying good guys. Anyways, Ennio Morricone's score is immortal.
Killer soundtrack, for sure. My favorite musical trait of Ennio Morricone's film scores is how he builds those quiet crescendos with strings (violins, etc.). Example: the first few moments of the final showdown track "The Trio". The way he builds tension from the quietest moments up to the full volume ending is GREATNESS!!!
I can't even put into words just how much I enjoyed that! It made my day to be honest. I would love to see you do more movie scores. That was an absolute delight! Especially getting to see how it is done live with all the creative vocal pieces and percussions. Really fabulous stuff!
Those "flutes" are ocarinas I believe. Sometimes kids in elementary school are introduced to ocarinas and recorders in 3rd and 4th grades before traditional band or orchestra instruments in 5th or 6th grade. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is a must-watch.
The "Flutes," First one was a Recorder, second one was an Ocarina. They work like whistles. Bass recorder most recent modern song appearance is the the to The Mandalorian. Excellent music as well.
This film and this score are masterpiece, the marriage of the two is just astounding, I've probably seen this film 100+ times since I was a kid, easily, can recite the script (as most fans do) as I watch "...just know this Blondie, any man who crosses me and leaves me alive, knows nothing of Tuco"
Watch the movie, man! It has got so many layers like a cake. I saw it once as a kid and circa once every decade. By time as you grow old it reveals new and new layers, small details that add up to the story giving more and more thoughts. A fucking Masterpiece!
Living in Cuba I was say 5 years old my mother worked in a theater so it means I was babysat in front of a theater and my babysitter was an influx of international movies One was of course the above movie. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I have from back then to rewatching it when I can.
Ocarina And yes, there are voices and whistling in the actual score. As always, I enjoyed your analysis, but I'd love for you to return to this once you have seen the movie. Thanks for using this version, however! Love it!
Another great song on that score is "The trio" that plays when the final 3 guys dual happens. You probably never head a solo trumpet played like this before. A perfect match for that scene.
You chose the best version available - this stunning! Lovely touch having a body hanging from the gallows. You can see the orchestra are having a blast with it
This is the best version overall due to quality of the video/sound/production but Morricone conducting with Susanna Rigacci's vocals is pretty amazing. The sound quality of the video is not nearly as good but just listen to Rigacci's vocals. It's not even close. ua-cam.com/video/rKFpaCMRWgU/v-deo.html
The singing in the initial piece is mean't to mimic the sound of a coyote (followed by the wah - wah - wah) and yes it is sung in the film. I warmly recommend the full Danish Sympony Orchestra's concert of Ennio Morricone themed films, from Fistful of Dollars to the Godfather.
Ecstasy Of The Gold is also amazing! But also the opening theme of Once Upon a Time in The West and try for goodness sake Gabriel’s Oboe and Anything From Once Upon A Time In America, long sentence but All of Moriconne!
ocarina ocarina, (Italian: “little goose”, ) also called Sweet Potato, globular flute, a late 19th-century musical development of traditional Italian carnival whistles of earthenware, often bird-shaped and sounding only one or two notes.
good choice Doug. yes, the vocals and whistles are in the movie version. the whole "Man With No Name" trilogy is great. Fist Full Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
This score is so memorable. I don't remember movie but this music is so characteristic that you cannot forget it. Metallica played second part of this score as an intro on their concerts.
Hi Doug - I cannot believe you have never seen The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. This has been my favorite movie ever! I could never watch it too much. When my ex-wife and I were married and I would watch it, she would leave and go shopping or something. This is because it is totally a guys movie. The movie is an absolute masterpiece. It is a very long movie but every minute of it is dripping with intensity. My ex-wife could not appreciate the intensity of it and just saw it as boring. To me this is the movie of all movies and my second favorite, in case you haven't seen it is "One Upon a Time in the West". You need to set some time aside and watch both of these. Also, I am rarely sick, but when I am home sick and recovering on the couch. These are the movies that I am watching. Hope you get an opportunity to see both of these movies soon. Enjoy!
As someone who has seen this movie many times and heard the theme many times it was awesome to actually see it preformed by an orchestra. Having seen this preformed now makes me appreciate the movie even more.
One of the (many) great things about this movie is how the landscape is used. It's brutal and often cruel, but imprinted with the memories of thousands of years of attempts to tame it. Morricone captured this struggle perfectly, it's as if the war cries of long-vanished tribes are still being carried on the wind.
Definitely see the movie. It's a great film, and the score makes it even more epic. The "there are two kinds of people in this world, my friend..." is a recurring joke from the movie (e.g. "...those holding a gun, and those who dig" etc). The flute thing is an ocarina, I believe. Some kind of vessel flute anyway. And it's a pretty good reproduction of the title music, wah-wahs, whistles and all :)
One of the greatest scores of all time, and by God, Sergio Leone knew exactly what to do with it, along with his supreme cast, his cinematographer and script : make a sublime masterpiece of cinema.
The lady who sang "wah wah", her name is tuva semmingson, a classically trained singer in her own right, she sings everything from opera to standards to pop. A diva of the 1st class. If you look closely, for this concert she was wearing little six shooter earrings. PERFECT!!! I watched an interview with the two vocalists.Tuva Semmingsen AKA the Wa Wa Lady, as she has been called by the tube, actually likes being called the Wa Wa Lady. She couldn't believe how this performance took off on the tube. Christine Nonbo Andersen is the solo vocalist in the audience. This was her first performance with the Danish National Orchestra. Both ladies nailed their performances and added a stunning element to this Ennio Morricone masterpiece. Ennio Morricone was a composer of film soundtracks, where he used instruments and objects that are not normally used in an orchestral ensemble. Electric guitars, basses, ocarinas, bongos ... but also whips, gunshots, gusts of wind. Entering Morricone's work is a complete immersion. A moving tribute for fidelity down to the smallest details is what the Spaghetti Werstern Orchestra did to him.
Another recommendation with this orchestra would be "A whiter shade of pale" by/with Procol Harum from their debut album in 1967. It reached number 1 in the UK singles chart and stayed there for six weeks - and went to number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100. - More than 1000 known cover versions! You will recognize the inspiration from Bach in the instrumental melody. The singer and piano player was Gary Brooker. In 1977 it was named joint winner (along with Queen´s "Bohemian Rhapsody") of "The best British Pop Single 1952-1977" at the Brit Awards. In 1998 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, - you can read more at Wikipedia . It is broadcast from Denmark still with Gary Brooker. Thank you for your reactions -

5:51 The Ecstasy of Gold, is the prelude to every Metallica concert since 1982. They understand and appreciate classical music.
Been there, done that. Almost brings a tear to your eye watching it at a live gig. Great comment.
This is not classical, it is epic and orchestral though. Metallica did make a cover on Ecstasy of Gold but it was the Fields of the Nephelim who composed a cover on Morricone's Harmonica Man from the movie Once Upon A Time In The West.

All their western interpretations are just sublime. The Once Upon A Time In The West soundtrack is my favourite.
YES!!!
It’s my favorite soundtrack hands down. It’s beautiful, vicious, melancholic, and lovely.
And the harmonica is sublime.
@@rincemind8369 And the sad thing is Fonda was brilliant as Frank.
@@rincemind8369Henry Fonda, not Peter.
I thought all kids play recorders in elementary schools at least in western countries. Don't remember us playing them quite like this however...
My brother Michael, killed Vietnam in 1968 by sniper. His favorite. We loved the West. This is a masterpiece!!! Thank you
The masterpiece musical score with its various themes takes this Clint Eastwood epic to another level.
Bravo Maestro Morricone … We’ll done sir !!!!
Living in Cuba I was say 5 years old my mother worked in a theater so it means I was babysat in front of a theater and my babysitter was an influx of international movies One was of course the above movie. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I have from back then to rewatching it when I can.
Ocarina
And yes, there are voices and whistling in the actual score.
As always, I enjoyed your analysis, but I'd love for you to return to this once you have seen the movie. Thanks for using this version, however! Love it!
Morricone hearing this in his head, before writing it down, so we could hear it as well.❤
Another great song on that score is "The trio" that plays when the final 3 guys dual happens.
"I've never seen The Good The Bad And The Ugly"
Doug, I may have to rethink my subscription! 😂
Wtf. This music made my daughter nuts. Appreciate!
Ecstasy Of The Gold is also amazing! But also the opening theme of Once Upon a Time in The West and try for goodness sake Gabriel’s Oboe and Anything From Once Upon A Time In America, long sentence but All of Moriconne!
I love that you seemed sceptical at first🤗 Loved this reaction that also had some knowledge. Hugs from Sweden.
ocarina
ocarina, (Italian: “little goose”, ) also called Sweet Potato, globular flute, a late 19th-century musical development of traditional Italian carnival whistles of earthenware, often bird-shaped and sounding only one or two notes.
Every time i heard The Gold of Ecstasy before the Metallica Concert, i have goosebumps and tears in my eyes. Just like here. So beautiful.
Not seen The Good, The Bad & The Ugly??? One of the masterpieces of cinema!
Yes, Doug. This is not some lazy facsimile. This is the real deal, they must have gotten the original score and parts. Fantastic.
Hands down, my favorite movie of all time, simply the best.
To truly appreciate this score, you have to see the movie, and how well the score fits the scenes and the movie itself. This is a great theme.
Please do more Morricone!
Great video 👍Love morricon fabulous composer,I think the added context of film and musical score will change your appreciation of the music.
I am impressed, you recognized the guitar immediately, bravo
good choice Doug. yes, the vocals and whistles are in the movie version. the whole "Man With No Name" trilogy is great. Fist Full Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
And this symphony does all 3
This score is so memorable. I don't remember movie but this music is so characteristic that you cannot forget it. Metallica played second part of this score as an intro on their concerts.
It's called "The Ecstasy Of Gold"
*Metallica still plays
Thank you for your answers 🙂
Listen to The Ballad of Sacco and Vanzetti... music by Morricone, sung by Joan Baez... brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
YES They did it in the movie simply amazing!
One of the best classical composers of the last century full-stop.
Enjoy!
The ENTIRE soundtrack was FANTASTIC! In high school, I played this soundtrack every night before I fell asleep.
Dear Doug, you should absolutely visit this marvelous concert hall in Copenhagen, I am even not Danish and love this hall. Living here since 1996!
La Storia Di Un Soldato is my favorite from this soundtrack.. beautiful piece.
Oh that's such a good version. Brilliantly played, great underlying sense of humour. Love the oboe bit.
Two even better soundtracks are the following:
Ennio Morricone: Once Upon a Time in the West
Basil Poledouris: Conan the Barbarian
IMHO "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is the better soundtrack.
That Basil soundtrack for Conan is one of my all time favs....I have that in my collection of Metal Music.
Also check out the Basil Poledouris soundtrack for Lonesome Dove.
Equally good but not better.
Very good but not better
Wonderful score fantastic movies well worth watching
You'll love the movie!
Another wonderful and evocotive piece of cinema music is the theme for the fim CONAN THE BARBARIAN. I dont think you will be disappointede.
Thank you Doug. R.I.P. MAESTRO ❤
You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those who like these films scores and those who dig. You dig it.
As someone who has seen this movie many times and heard the theme many times it was awesome to actually see it preformed by an orchestra. Having seen this preformed now makes me appreciate the movie even more.
Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain do a killer version.
One of the (many) great things about this movie is how the landscape is used. It's brutal and often cruel, but imprinted with the memories of thousands of years of attempts to tame it. Morricone captured this struggle perfectly, it's as if the war cries of long-vanished tribes are still being carried on the wind.
Beautiful imagery in your comment!
@@davespicer3647 Thanks, but I have to admit that Camel got there first with their song Echoes from the album Breathless.
A nice analysis of this greatest of themes .
Not only is it my favourite score of all time , it’s also my favourite movie .
Cheers !
Can you imagine being known as the "Wah, wah" girl for the Danish National Symphony Orchestra?
Definitely see the movie. It's a great film, and the score makes it even more epic. The "there are two kinds of people in this world, my friend..." is a recurring joke from the movie (e.g. "...those holding a gun, and those who dig" etc). The flute thing is an ocarina, I believe. Some kind of vessel flute anyway. And it's a pretty good reproduction of the title music, wah-wahs, whistles and all :)
Amazing music, just like the movie
. . . are you going to do a reaction video to the movie? I hope so, that would be so interesting!
that would be quite interesting. They don't make movies like that anymore, especially not the crap we've been getting these past ten years...
@@Trygvar13 I agree! Even the remake of 3:10 to Yuma wasn't good enough to keep me watching after 15 minutes!
Thanks for sharing.
You put it into words the way i'm thinking
One of the greatest scores of all time, and by God, Sergio Leone knew exactly what to do with it, along with his supreme cast, his cinematographer and script : make a sublime masterpiece of cinema.
Ennio, my Master, my composer, my Country. proud of him. All Italy, all italian musicians, proud of him. Thanks Doug.
What a tremendous adaptation of a truly magnificent piece. Now I have to watch my favourite movie yet again!
Love Morricone, excellent movie too, other great Soundtracks : Once upon a time in the West, Chinatown,Bladerunner.
Great great movie, one of my favorites! And great song. I remember when the Hugh Montenegro version was a hit back in 1967…
I still have the 45!
Excellent Work Doug, You are a star..
