Miele C3 vacuum cleaner cable reel / spool repair ( zero dollar solution )

- My Miele C3 vacuum cleaner had an issue with the cable reel. The problem was that the cable stop didn’t work and that the cable kept spooling into the cleaner in stead of locking in position.
The problem was caused by a broken leaf spring in the locking and release mechanism.
The solution I’ve chosen and show in this video is to completely remove the latch that regulates the locking and releasing the reel. Result is that you have to keep the button pressed to fully spool the cable. Good news is: it works, you don’t have to buy a new cable reel and the mechanism won't break in the future :)
To see how to disassemble the Miele C3 in order to get to the reel/spool is excellently shown in a video of Steve @madabouthoovers9767

I feel like I owe you a beer Pete, this worked like a charm. However did you work out that removing that part would make the reel work again? As someone has said below, the leaf spring in my Miele was intact but it still didn't work properly. You are an absolute diamond sharing this with the world sir... thank you
Funny that you mention it, because I did fiddle about with the thing first and when I found out this piece of plastic / spring was causing the problem and actually not being crucial at all… I thought about filming it as it might help some other people saving the money for a new spool thing. Glad it helped you and once I’m over in the UK we’ll catch up on that beer and some live music 👍🏼😀👍🏼
This is absolute genius. Thank you so much. I had lived with our Miele after that tiny and brittle little part had broken after a couple of years of use. I finally decided to take it all apart, assuming I’d have to waste 30 pounds or euros on a full flex reel replacement. Thank you thank you!
You're welcome! and thanks for the feedback!
I have the save screwdriver😂. O my god! I bought it in Russia! Same chineese stuff.😂
Genius ! You saved me a lot of time and 175 € . Illustrates how Germans like to complicate simple things . Thank you very much !
Tnx for your message! Glad to be of help :)
Thank You. this is briliant solution-although it took some time to understant why this works
@@남기헌-l8y You’re more than welcome! Yes I do get your point here. This is a first-try-one-take-uncut video ;) and looking back at it I’m also surprised so many people actually understand what’s going on 🤣🤣 Anyway glad you got it and your vacuum is good to go again!
thanks for this solution! What was the designer’s intended function of this - now removed - part?
Welcome Time! The intend of this piece (the latch) was so you’d only have to push the reel button only once and the cord would spool fully. That why the spool button says something like “Comfort”. With the latch removed you have to keep the button pressed until the cord is spooled fully. A bit like the mechanism in a ball pen … Hope this helps 👍🏼
TTTHHHHAAAANNNKKKK YYYYOOOOUUUUUUU very very very very much
MMMOOOSSSSTTT WWWEELLLCOOOOMMEEE. 😂 you made my day 🤣👍🏼
You are a legend...saved me so much money and frustration...I did chuckle when I was replicating and had the spring in my hand and you then threw away....before this I was thinking it would be a bugger getting this plastic part back in
Yes! Glad to make you smile :) But jah... getting that piece of plastic back in would have been a bugger! Good think we could loose it :)
Hello Dutch Pete,
great video! Exactly my problem with the vacuum cleaner. The cable stop didn't work, but in my case the leaf spring was fine.
I removed the leaf spring part as in the video.
Everything works again! Thanks very much!
Boris
Thanks for your feedback! I'm glad you could work it out from this rather messy sunday-morning-film-while-you-do video 😂 Another 30 bucks saved! 👍
I will have to report back but I have the feeling this is the exact video and exact fix! @@PeteMGTF
Let me know! I hope it will save you a beer or two ;) @@ravenheart0609
Not quite sure what you did! Haha
Hi, does your vacuum cleaner have the problem that it keeps winding the mains cord?
same problem, as i like to tinker erm what is going wrong with the leaf spring itself, not enough bend in it, such a simple little part, what is wrong with that part so as not to do it's job, i bought a c3 with a bust motor, the triac thyristor (thats a thermal cutout fuse) was shot, replaced it for $6.00 motor works like new now, but the leaf spring is interesting..
Devil is in the details... like in a tiny leafspring :)
Превосходно 💪

You're welcome 👍
Thank you from New Zealand!! Not a word spoken, just straight to the point… genius This was my exact problem. We were quoted $230NZD to fix (£120)….feel like you helped my family beat the man🎉
Glad my "between breakfast and coffee"-movie making saved you the money! Tnx for your response!
Brilliant solution; you've saved me a ton of time and effort! ❤️
Thanks for your feedback Sean! It makes me super happy that my silent movie helps people around the world save some money and keep some waste from the environment.
Perfekt 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
@@nataliafetisova3797 dankje!
Anyone know how to get the tension back in the reel? i cant get the cord to retract?
Works well. So simple. Thank you.
Glad it worked!
Works perfectly. Very smart. Saved a lot of money and frustration. Good thing with the links for opening the machine.
@@larsdagson7822 Glad I helped you to give your vacuum cleaner a few more years! Yah putting in those links seemed usefull… but also because I was too lazy to put the machine back together and then film the dismantling again 🤣
Hello Pete, thanks from Germany. Saved my Vacuum for hopefully the next 10 Years ;)
Danke fur ihre nette respons! Schon das es auch fur Sie funktuoniert had. 👍🏼
Thanks alot. This video enabled me to fix mine. I'm delighted to have saved the money not needing to replace or get repaired.
Glad I could be of help here!
Merci ✋👍
S’il vous plaît :)
simply perfect. - Thank you from Germany.
Bitte 👍🏼
Bedankt! Top dat je dit hebt gedeeld. Loste voor mij ook het probleem op!
Graag gedaan Rogier , bedankt voor je reactie!
So far so good with that wee fix. Good man. Thanks
You're welcome! 👍
Thanks this is great.
You're welcome Vincent. Thanks for your response!
Does allowing the cord to auto retract and slam into the stop at the end cause the stress in the part that makes it fail prematurely? I have one Miele that's failed, and one that's still working; wondering how I can forestall the failure of this failure prone design on the one that's working.
The only thing I can figure is to hold the cord at the end and slow down the retraction, the way I would do with a retractable tape measure.
@@dubmob151 hey Dub, that is a very interesting thought for sure… I tried to reproduce in my mind how the system works and if there was an obvious path through which the impact could travel to the spring/latch. To me it doesn’t seem very obvious as the latch only holds the button (that on its turn holds the small rubber roller that is floating free during the winding process) On the other hand, the plug at the end of the cord does slam rather aggressively against the mechanics to unlatch the latch and for sure some of this impact might influence lifetime of the spring. Add to that that the leaf spring is of a rather flimsy quality… for sure it would have been a lot better if they had used a small coil spring there.
Anyway, let me know if you see a substantial lifetime difference between your 2 vacuum cleaners 😁👍🏼
@@PeteMGTF the ones I have are two different types of retraction mechanisms though, the one that failed is one that is supposed to retract only while the button is pushed, while the other one continues retracting on its own after the initial push, labeled 'comfort' for some reason.
The one requiring the active push is the one that failed, but it's the older one too which has seen more use.
Hahaha ik lig dubbel, één onderdeel verwijderen en het werkt weer. Thnks Pete🎉
Graag gedaan maat! (over-engineered duits spul ;)
Thanks very much, worked a treat, took no more than a hour to do👍👍👍
Got you mate! You’re welcome 👍🏼
Reparation du dérouleur Miele C3. Fonctionne bien.
Encore merci.
Tnx Thomas! Yes I thought about putting a sticker over “comfort” 😂
Whats that part suppose to do? I pulled mine out as shown and it seems to work the same.
Hey Chris! The part is meant to enable the "Comfort" function as it says on the spool button. The comfortable aspect is that you only have to push the button once to spool the full length of the mains cable. When you take out this part (the latch), it will no longer spool automatically but you have to keep the button pressed to spool the full mains cable. Hope this helps.
@PeteMGTF thanks. I realized that later. Not a deal breaker seeing as it is more important to have the cord stay out and retract as needed.
You saved my marriage
You're welcome scott! Actually the only reason I made this video :) Say hi to Monica for me ;)
Genius!
Thanks!
