just when you thought content would get boring in the off season. best PB video since the all the Cathro stuff. Now we just need Loics video game controller on the bars and see what it does!!
Best video I have seen in a while. Thank you Henry for being brave and asking and thanks Specialized and Ohlins for being awesome and making it happen.
When you enjoy being an enthusiast, then get to taste the pro side of things, you’re either inspired, or dejected. Henry, you’re definitely inspired! Great video, and cheers from Santa Cruz! 😎👍
Wow, ya lucky Bastard ! That was a well put together video, with so much Knowledge shared by Nicco ! Hate on Specialized if ya must, but they Just Work !
This is spectacular. I had goosebumps when he started riding the Bruni tuned suspension and just started raving about how well it rode. So sick of Specialized and Ohlins to hook this up!
Incredibly interesting and informative video. The big disclaimer, however, is that for mere mortals, these settings are probably imparactical with respect to fatigue w/ longer rides and even joint stress. Its like putting an F1 suspension set up on your family sedan. But for bat-out-of hell, high intensity downhill courses, its a Ferrari we'd all love to jump on.
I used to aim for a softer, more comfortable suspension feel. I recently tried firming things up quite a bit, and at first, I was like, it’s too firm. But, after giving it some time, and a few more rides with the firmer setup, I can say, I really like it now! The bike feels so much more composed, and I’m riding much harder and faster. Point being, if you make a big change in suspension, give it a while to really adjust to it then make your decision.
Interestingly, I had an accidental awakening to this way of thinking. I always went for a softer set up with the aim of being smoother, and in my head, faster. I then had my suspension serviced, and my LBS somehow put in another (heavier) rider’s pressures by mistake. I didn’t realise this until later, but I was suddenly riding so much faster with way more control, and was able to keep up with guys who’ve always dropped me. If anything, it was too firm as I was only using about half of my travel. But my god did it make a difference! I’d be interested to know what changes you made to firm things up, as my understanding of suspension set up has now been destroyed 😂
@@hollinsproductions So I had my compression settings on the fork and rear shock set almost wide open, with only a few clicks in on HSC/LSC. That gives a nice plush, comfortable ride, but at the cost of high speed control. The bike just “moves” too much. Hitting jumps also can feel sketchy as the suspension bobs too easily and also landing felt good and soft, but a bit out of control. I thought I had everything dialed, but I decided to try using more LSC to see how it felt. I wanted more stability on jumps and hard pushing trail/DH riding. I adjusted my rear shocks LSC another 4 clicks in, clockwise “firmer”, and tried the jump line again. The bike felt much less kicky on lips, and more controllable on the landing. I thought I would only use this firmer setting on jump lines, and thought it may be too firm on the trails. I then tried my regular trails with a bit of everything like jumps, drops, tech, DH etc, and the bike just felt fast. I was riding sections i would usually ride the brakes a lot, and was now barely even touching the brakes. The bike just felt so much more in control as I pushed harder. The fork and shock were setup to proper sag, I just added more LSC than I’m used to. HSC was still close to open, (a few clicks in), and is only adjusted in more to control bottom outs. I think a lot of people get to obsessed with using full travel all the time. This ends up being with a suspension that is too soft. I only use full travel (170mm), if I’m riding hard and to my full ability, on some drops or jumps. On a more mellow trail I’ll only use 75-80% of full travel. Don’t get caught up on using full travel all the time on every ride. You will use full travel as you ride harder and push yourself harder.
I didn't have a method of measuring dynamic sag, so I'm wondering what the change in static sag looks like. It sounded like they went up 50lbs in the rear. I have a Sprindex that I'll dial up 50lbs and measure the % sag.
Been waiting for a video like this on this bike for soo long! Absolutely amazing video - great work making this happen for us to see Mr Quinney! Hm...and maaaybe Öhlins 🇸🇪 would be a great upgrade on my Specialized 😁
Not surprised that a top level pros setup felt great haha Regarding suspension and compliance it gets brought up on motobikes alot aswell? Riders will often make the mistake of going softer compression when they feel the ride is harsh? When you actually need to go up in compression to keep the suspension up in the stroke. Suspension will often feel hard and harsh if it rides too low in the stroke where the air pressure/spring is bound up
Suspension tuning is both systematic and holistic, you've got to change one thing at a time to observe the differences but you've got to be aware that changing something will also cause changes elsewhere, with time and experience you can learn the sympathetic changes you'll have to make to keep the balance but it's always important to never assume and to go through the process step by step. The other thing to be aware of is the difference between what feels good and what's fast, sometimes it feels really good but it's slow and sometimes it feels like you're barely hanging on but your sector times are on fire and this is why pro's are pro's, they can keep on top of things despite the bike doing its best to send them into the scenery.
Henry discovers the joy of custom tuning. Having a custom tune to your weight and riding style is light years ahead of trying to setup a stock suspension to you. Having a proper shim stack creates such an advancement in performance.
Amazing. I really do think that Ohlins may be one up on fox and sram for this level of suspension… I do agree though, if you’re on the brakes a lot and come into compressions NOT at warp speeds, a more supple setup is probably more confidant inspiring. Now if you are active using your legs to dampen and rely on your spring as a platform to push against to more “skip” through the compression, then a you’d want a firmer setup, but you do need some composure… hence HSC I actually think more people need less rebound, BUT the way the circuits end up working, often can cause a ballooning effect on smaller chassis though you do want it to return as fast as possible. Probably why people are going to the thicker Stantion forks these days
This gives such a great insight into different setups, it is obviously faster and a true race setup but I just would like to know if a non pro could hold onto it all day without getting major fatigue. I'm Inspired make some changes to my suspension to go looking for that balance point. Thanks for the video
I can understand why its not featured, but I feel a huge thing is missing here - the mystery box and the buttons. Getting access to that would most likely transform the suspension from highend mechanical to ultra highend electronic and a completely different feel = active suspension.
When they swapped the fork air spring, was it to change the ride height to account for the reduced sag? A 180 travel spring perhaps? or was it to increase the negative chamber vol.?
I'm so happy you left his in fucking credible comment in there. That goes to show how sometimes swearing isn't a bad thing but just a result of an emotional expression.
I've got to kids and they will grow up knowing swearing as an expression is fine. Swearing to be a dick never will be. You out fucking in the middle of something it expresses it more. Telling someone to fuck off is just a dick move.
I find it absolutely mental that the pinkbike test rider likes to ride the rebound on the rear wide open on his own bike. I can’t understand how he doesn’t get bounced/kicked off like a pogo stick. I live in the alps and ride Chatel, Morgins, Champery etc all season and I run mine really slow. I’m by no means the quickest rider but I ride most of the black runs and hit most of the big jumps and drops/features and I can’t control the bike if the rear rebound is too fast. He must have some serious bike control.
just when you thought content would get boring in the off season. best PB video since the all the Cathro stuff. Now we just need Loics video game controller on the bars and see what it does!!
It controls the semi active damper. what else would it do? contact an alien race from outer space?
c'mon man, use your head
I came to pink bike for
Levi ( and I miss his humour), but Henry is certainly retaining my interest.. brilliant work team pinkbike 🎉
@@dpaterson42 Same. Quinney and Dario are keeping the spirit of PB alive. Keep it weird. Keep it controversial!
Fresh renewal of energy with this video!
Also huge probs to Specialized for These Deep insights!
Eventually there gonna release the new gen enduro so no need to hide😂
It's only missing Bruni's mystery buttons.
All racers have buttons
And his Magura Break
I was hoping he would get to use the buttons 😢
This definitely elevates Specialized as a brand for me. The honesty was fantastic.
I really like the brand in terms of their r&d department. what keeps me away from them, is their sales department...
@@theycallmebernd sales department? its their legal department thats the problem. (I ride a carbon stumpy)

Thank you Henry, Pinkbike, Specialized, Öhlins! This is thestuffmost of Us like!
Good content Henry, it's been awhile since I saw you ride for real for more that a second long segment.
Gooo Henry 🤘
Best.Vid. Since Ages. Props to Ohlins, Specialized and Pinkbike. More of this please!

This is the best mountain bike content I have ever seen.
How about a round 2 with the commencal and fox?
Bike is beautiful but also a super informative video! Thanks for keeping all the techy details in this one!
maybe up there for the best PB video ever, super cool.

It’s a linkage driven Horst. Literally the same category of the last demo, the shock is driven from the cs instead of the rocker
That’s super cool! I would kill to ride that bike with Brunis settings.
