i was in an accident while driving a Volvo 240 wagon, that car saved my life. 240 was a great car
"Sounded like a tractor"
"Ran like a Swiss Watch"
My first 240 was a 400.00 dollar 87 DL with over 600 thousand miles on the clock.
Drove it five years.
The only time I popped the hood. Was to jump another car.
Don't think I even changed the oil.
Just added.
Nice to hear the Irish accent. I'm Irish & own a 2x 240GL Wagons here in Melbourne. It ticks all the boxes for me and has lots of character. Got it dirt cheap but they seem to be worth a bit of money to now.
P.s: The slope on the rear doors is due to Volvo using the same doors that come on the 244 sedan
I love my 240, also had a 440 and 940, and right now i’ll daily a 850. volvo for life!
Next get a S70, a better 854’
Great video. Fank you. I have an Italian 240 Super Polar.
Ahh, gotta love the 140/240 series. I had three wagons, one four-door and I now have a 2 door oldtimer currently.
Just manual swapped mine, the 5 speed makes all the difference in these cars! Great video 👍
Cheers Julian! :)
Great video! Absolutely love these old Volvos. Had an old V70r from 1998 and looking back I wish I'd never sold it
Thanks Iain, they really are indestructible old cars!
Excellent banter, guys. Keep it up!
Another fun fact: I was going through some old Volvo 240 brochures and realised that Volvo carried out their photoshoot in Ireland back in the late 80's and there's one shot where they have a Volvo 740 parked outside the Father Ted house.
That's class! We'll have to look that up!
@@427Motorsports if only I could send a picture on here
I luv Volvo's and father Ted....I need to see that pic !
@@peterscotney1 it's so worth it haha
FANTASTIC video guys! Thanks! New subscriber as a result of this wonderful video!
Nice job :) so thanks , although we saw NOTHING of the dashboard filmed while you were talking about it ;)
Was talking to a Fireman about the cutter he was using to remove the roof off of crashed cars.
"How about a Volvo! *
Oh you don't need to cut the roof off of Volvos. After a crash they either open the doors and step out, or they're dead!"
Hugely useful cargo area. Among other things it could fit a single bed mattress, and a 14.5 cu ft chest freezer (had to take the door off). Completely flat cargo floor.
I am just as happy with my 1990 745 turbo Intercooler Estate.
588.000 km and counting (app 365.000 miles).
They are great cars, the 140, 240, the 740 and the 940 series (especially the estates in my opnion).
Later Volvos are front-wheel drive and lack the tight turning circle.
Rear-wheel drive Volvos turn on the envelope, the front-wheel drive need a different zip code.
Marcel (Netherlands).
I own one of these now after watching this video multiple times, mine is a 1985 (1986 model year with a B230A and AW70 setup, it's not bad, but could do with abit more power), might improve it over time..
240 For Life!
had two 240's over 6 years, they are built like a tank, rarely if ever broke down.
I remember the 240 wagons back in the days when I was a kid. I clearly remember I was thinking how old, ugly & outdated they seemed even then. But now I am excited about them cause I do understand how cars used to be so simple & functional. Engineering & ingenuity was what excited people. Many times, I wonder how did we lose that and ended up with computers that also function as cars, are bigger on the outside but have a way smaller cabin... Whenever I drive a modern car I realize how our family's old trusty Alfa Romeo 164, and my (modern compared to the 240s) w210 FL are so big and spacious that you just love to have & drive them. Love your work guys!
Totally agree. I remeber thinking these were ugly and outdated when I was a kid. That was until I drove one. Now I daily drive a 1990 240. Funny how things change with age.
Totally agree, if they still made the 240 estate to the old spec I would buy one!
Most amazingly reliable car ever made.
OK it used a bit more fuel, but you saved on everything else.
Look after it, and it will always look after you.
Nice video! Just wanted to add, you also find headight wipers in Ladas ;) not only for the rich, but for those who really need them hehe
I became a Volvo convert after my 1991 MBZ 300 wagon. I now have my 2006 V70R ( original owner) w/148K miles. I’ll keep it until it fails me.
Great. TimeLess 245.
I had one for a year about 15 years ago. Cavernous carrying capacity and cheap in every respect apart from fuel but surprisingly tight and not particularly comfortable for drivers like me over 6'.
41cuft is just with the back seats up. With them flat, it is 76cuft, which is better than even the Mercedes E-Class wagon. It is fab and I speak as a W124 wagon owner.
1:00 They share so damn many parts that you can update any model year of either with the '91+ improved front/rear windscreens that don't require that seepy, oozy butyl tape shit that gets all over everything after a decade.
Also, that weird little cup shaped washer on the right at 7:05 is to prevent that stud from puncturing the gas tank in the event of a rear end collision.
Also, lovely cloth headrest pads! I've only ever seen vinyl ones! (Those are an OEM addon)
Currently overhauling a poor '88 that's got a lot of deferred maintenance before going on a 3k mile (smidge short of 5k in non-hick units) road trip across the continent.
Awesome video! I bought a black 245 glt with leather interior last year, it unfortunately didn't come with the original turbo engine so i'm swapping it next month to the b21ft which is the engine it was originally delivered with. It will be intercooled with a 3" jt exhaust and a m90 manual
Glad you enjoyed it! That'll be a flying machine when you're finished!
@@427Motorsports i sure hope so, as plane tickets are getting more expensive 😉 haha! It'll be a lot of fun!
The two belts?
Because it also drives the steering pump, and it is almost impossible to turn the wheel if the pump is not running. ( Try it with the engine off!)
And that thing will tow a caravan up the side of a farm house with no problems.....
A working horse, built like a tank. You only have to change oil once a year, and they go on forever.
Gerry Leadbeater in BBCs The Good Life drove a Volvo estate
My 940 Volvo estate has many of the same features as the 240 , I would love a 240 estate but they soon get snapped up before I get to see em
Why a V6 you asked? Well in those days Volvo had co-engineered a V8! Together with Peugeot and Renault... It was called the PRV...
It was 4 litres. Then the oil crisis of 73 kicked in and it was decided to hack off 2 cylinders... a 2.7 PRV was born with a 90 degree angle. They had it on the shelf and that is why they changed it. The old inline b300 was nothing more than an extended b200 and was a bit long in the tooth.
However it wasn't the best engine... actually it was a misfiring V8 without 2 cylinders. It had some moments of fame when DeLorean featured this engine as well. Last time seen? Volvo 760, 2 versions, the upgraded last one was the best... and in a Xantia. Somewhere in the early 2000's. Volvo exchanged the PRV for the Whiteblock 6 I line, wich was a marvelous engine... bittersweet, but of you press it hard, it becomes a beast! And it sounds amazing!
An interesting insight, thank you!
6 feet 4 inches of practicality behind the front seats!
😂solid, reliable, good luggage capacity I had the estate and well designed. Easy to change a light bulb. No squeaks or rattles or leaks, until I got my Volvo I thought it was normal for a car to squeak rattle and leak.
My 850 TDI also has a VW Diesel
VOLVOS ARE AWESOME 👌 👏 👍🏿 SAFETY RELIABLE CARS easy to work on, you can put the different accessories on to make your Volvo your own custom car 🚗 😀 😉
The sleekest Volvo of the V70 era is the S60 with a drag coefficient of 0.28. That is almost Mercedes Benz W203 level.
The V6 in the 260 was shared with Renault or Peugeot and a third marque. It was an attempt to cut development costs. I have read that it was not a great improvement over the red block.
It was not a great improvement in power and corrosion in the engine block (alloy) would create pinhole leaks that were too expensive to repair. The straight sixes before and after the V6 were better engines.
I refer to @fretlessfender for a better explanation of why the V6 was used.
A straight six is the best engine design. A v6 is a compromise 😊
You didn't indicate to turn left in the first shot.
I like the very last square one is it the 900
The diesel 240 wasn’t imported to the uk.
That is a shame!
740.
Yes that is also another type of Volvo
The 245 Flying Brick is the apex of the ICE-car evolution. Nothing after 1993 that is added to cars is necessary, rather annoying.
It is the best estate, blue is great and the pcv v6 was shite.
if you want petrol or lpg you shoud get the volvo if you want an diesel get an mercedes
I love the old Volvo’s. We need reliable and easy to fix cars like these back. Not like the modern problem cars like bmw mercedes Audi’s and so on.

Mine was a lemon and not comfortable.. My V-90 was a better wagon...
Hilarious car. Seems like it was designed by an elementary school kid
I'm sorry, what? Up until 7 minutes in you hadn't said anything directly wrong, just didn't sound very clued up, but claiming push-rods were ever used? I'm out...
Hi, the B18 engine in the 140 Series and B20 in the 240 series was a pushrod design 😇
@@427Motorsports And it was never fitted to the 240.
The B20 was carried over from the 100 series and fitted to the 200 for 1975 and 76 in the US and Canada
@@chilleddriving1455it was for one year....😂
