Okay, small detail, but I love how in the arranged marriage episode, Robin gets jealous over Star’s betrothed being a handsome Tamaranian, before it’s revealed that she’s marrying a SLUDGE MONSTER, and he gets *pissed,* like, he gets furious simply at the fact that Star’s getting a raw deal here, showing he’s more invested in her happiness than anything.
Yeah! Like he was obviously upset his crush was getting married and didn’t seem too put off at the idea, but from the very beginning his biggest concern as her FRIEND is that she hasn’t even met the guy yet. The jealousy was just a fun cherry on top
I know, it's really emphasized that they're friends FIRST. Best friends, at that. And we see it through the show in small ways how they're always together talking about inconsequential things unrelated to the mission. That's why that episode was really nice because even if they didn't end up together, they just really care for each other as people and friends first, with the potential to be more.
Right?! Like, at first, he's thinking he'll never compete with the handsome Tamaranean, and then when he sees Glerdelschletch, he's like, "I'll be damned if I'm going to let my girl *settle."*
I liked the episode where they reversed the dynamic by having the team visit Starfire's planet. Suddenly she has to ride herd on her friends going, "NO!! Don't sit on that!! That's not a chair, it's the family pet!"
Yeah; it’s my bias bc I am a first-gen American but Starfire obliviousness I’d clearly just cultural differences, where they go to Tamaran the other Titans are the ones who are so out of their depth
@suspici0us_cat There are comics out there that seem to be doing just that, at least - I'd just prefer a show much more. Gabriel Picolo - made popular for his BBRae series which thrills me - heavily focuses on the kind of Teen Titans the '03 show created. I haven't read them yet, but I'm looking forward to his work. Even some new comics meant to come out this spring seem to be reviving that Teen Titans setup with the addition of old OG's like Donna Troy and Kid Flash, likely influenced by the TV show and Kid Flash's popularity in YJ. People also missed Dick's friendship with Wally, so this allows that in the way the '03 show didn't. I think something similar coming as an animated property is likely for once, but I think the safest route they could do is touch up on the old one by finishing up Teen Titans with the content from the comics it's directly linked with - that'd be cool. I don't really trust a full reboot of the same show, and at least the show ended well enough where it was. Making something new in a similar spirit seems like a smarter idea. It'll be able to make its own thing but still carry a lot of what made the original show so good in the first place.
My main gripe with Starfire is that sometimes she’s weak and unsure when they need her to be the damsel in distress, while other times she almost killed the three male titans without access to her starbolts. My personal headcanon is when she’s acting weaker than she really is, it’s because she’s trying not to add to her body count.
@@nervousbreakdown711 To be fair characters being as strong as the plot needs them to be is just a thing in comics in general if not just most fiction, I mean one day Superman will casually take on the whole Justice League and then the next will struggle against a guy who can maybe throw a car
Nightwing is surrounded by emotionally constipated people who live and breathe their work. I like how despite being a hero herself, Starfire gives him a breath of fresh air. He can be funny and not get emotionally backhanded, he can nerd out to her about languages or things he found neat. I like how he speaks to her gently and humanly, while other people might not since she’s visibly extraterritorial. When they’re written well, I love these characters and their happiness.
I'd like to think that the Teen Tiatans and Starfire to be more specific is what made Dick who he is today. He learnt how to work witrh others and understand his emotions better.
While Dick and Barbara were the logical and sentimental couple, the real compliment to Dick is Starfire. Even when they are not together she is the one he goes to for emotional and often sexual healing. Batman's household is notable for an absence of women , and even the female 'bat-fam' members are not really good for him- Batwoman is gay, Catwoman is a criminal, Huntress is not really into him and there aren't really any mother figures at all in the house. Stephanie Brown (Spoiler/Robin) is more like a little sister type. Dick was the first member to venture outside Wayne Manor and live in the real world. Bruce may be the playboy but Dick has the actual charm and relatability that attracts people to him and unlike any of the other Robins, he has leadership quality embedded in him. Starfire, with her people's culture of passion and openess is exactly what Dick needs.
I loved this pairing quite a lot, to the point I went to the original comics. And I found a healthy pairing that only got separated because the writers changed. Seriously they were about to get married and preceded the era where Barbara got aged down for Robin.
That's more of an issue of the universe being rebooted with Crisis on Infinite Earths(undoing basically ALL character development for most of the DC characters)
@@axlorg89 I think it was partly to get Dick and Barbara together because around that time they wanted Dick to be more with the Bat family and he also needed a love interest there
I've seen people say robin/nightwing and starfire are lust while robin/nightwing and Batgirl are love. I haven't read the comics so that might be true, but pretty much every animated robin/nightwing I've seen belongs with starfire no doubt
Fun fact: In the final issue of the New Titans series back in the early 90s, Nightwing and Starfire were supposed to be married as this was planned by Marv Wolfman. But unfortunately, the wedding storyline had to end with Raven being corrupted by Trigon’s dark energy and causing them to break up, because the DC editorials at the time, demanded that Nightwing should be in more Batman books. Which makes sense, because you can tell that after that, DC has been constantly to trying their best keep Dick to be either being in evolve with the Bat family shenanigans, have him teaming up with Bruce, or try to keep him in Gotham, despite the fact that Dick has his own city with Bludheaven.
@@xanderg.1070 And she wasn't just dead but also a villain. It was bizarre how until the cartoon came out that Raven was generally considered a traitor to the Titans, moreso than friggin' Terra.
I SO agree with you. I understand that Barbara x Dick is more popular, but Dick x Starfire just feels the most organic and beautiful to me. It's definitely his best pairing in the DC universe. In most of their depictions their relationship is very healthy and cute, I like how Starfire allows Dick to "cool down" for some time, even acting as his therapist when he's going through a rough time. Dick is a very serious kind of guy who constantly feels like he needs to prove himself, and Starfire is a sweet and strong alien who understands the value of life, emotions and how it's okay to feel sad and weakness is normal. I could really go on and on about what makes this ship so great lol, but you've pretty much spelled out all of the reasons!
@@Gabe600 While Dick and Kori are by and large the more beloved of the two, Dick and Babs have had a longer and more thorough history in media, and expands to far more depictions that Star ever gets (To the point that to this day, even while Dick and Babs are currently still in a romance, whenever Star has a comic to herself she hints at still vaguely remembering her time with Dick, or even mentions being interested, and it never goes anywhere). TLDR: Dick and Kori is more popular, but Dick and Babs has more history and is thus kept as the standard for comics, leaving Kori often an....absolute confusing mess in the comics with seldom any direction.
I will always ship Dick Grayson with Starfire. It makes me sad that they're not together in the comics. Out of the teen titans show, I really like how they're depicted in Teen Titans vs the Justice League and Teen Titans Judas Contract. I like that they were able to grow up. I kinda wish Young Justice introduced Starfire, I really liked that version of Nightwing.
Did young justice ever get into where Starfire was in that universe, though? I stopped around season 3/4 when they first introduced Tara but don’t recall them ever mentioning her.
As of the end of season 4, no Tamaraneans. And while I like Star, that version of Dick already has chemistry with Zatana more than Barbara, and there are so many characters who compete to even be secondary supporting roles in someone else's journey. So as much as I love Star, there is no room for her. If there's another season, then there are more important story threads to wrap up and characters to get a last chance at the spot light.
I just wish that they were able to have a Season 6 and give Starfire a proper season-long arc like all the other Titans got. They could have done so many cool things like have Blackfire get involved as the main villain, explain what was up with Terra, and show Robin and Starfire as a couple after Trouble in Tokyo. The show had so much more potential than what its network allowed. They had five seasons (albeit only 13 episodes each) but they could have done a lot more great stuff.
I am honestly surprised they didn't make one of the five seasons for Starfire. I am all in for blaming Cartoon network, but maybe we should acknowledge the writers' mistake.
@@valentinkambushev4968 The sixth season that they were planning was actually supposed to be Starfire's, but the show got cancelled before they could make it.
@@GamerSlyRatchet1 shes literally the only one of the official titans in this show to not get a season, how could they not give her a season if season six actually came to be?
I'm still pissed that they teased a later release of season 6, and it ended up being some sh!t with teen titans go and the original teen titans. I still don't care if it was possibly even good. I refused to watch it. All I wanted was the final season they actually planned to make, which I know had to be about Star as it only made sense.
While Robin was trying so hard to become Batman, Starfire made him realize that he could be even better. That's why he chose to become Nightwing. Which is one of the many reasons why I prefer Nightwing/Robin and Starfire over any other pairing.
Something I always liked was that during the "Stranded" episode, when Robin is getting embarrassed and yells "she is not my girlfriend" that like, Starfire is upset about them not being friends more than anything to do with dating or not dating. It's a misunderstanding, and when he tries to clear it up to her he talks about how she's cool and strong and all sorts of OTHER things that make her special, and specifically not really mentioning looks or even feelings really. Like I watched this as a kid and that to me was a really healthy depiction of how you should feel about a crush or a friend. They should be cool and a healthy admiration on both sides is good.
"A mass hallucination that willed itself into existence." Sums up my feelings towards Beast Boy and Raven pretty nicely. Like, growing up, I was big on shipping. Yet I never gave those two a pacing glance, mainly cause Terra was there.
Yeah same when I was younger, I wanted BB & Raven bc everyone else was paired off in a sense, then I rewatched the show & realized BBRae was never intended to be a thing lol (similar to NTT)
I remembered earlier on the producers said they saw BB and Raven as brother and sister. That's why they never gelled to me as a couple. It was never the intention.
When i saw this show as a Child I totally saw beast boy and raven, I despised Terra because I didnt like her as a character and all of her storyline. Some years later I remembered TT and searched for comics of beast boy and raven and seems like they were a couple more or less since the 50s and have been the only couple to one another in most stories. So i kind of think It was planned but very very very slow.
Honestly, this series made me absolutely adore Robstar. I have nothing against Dickbabs, but because I grew up with this series, I just can't see nor care about Dick being with anyone else except Starfire.
Honestly? Hot take. The Judas Contract (2017 film) marries the two different versions of Starfire and feels like a comfortable middle ground for the most part. It feels adult but not overly showy. And it's one of my favorite versions of her, especially for cosplay because her suit is hella comfortable.
I will kill people if the adult versions of them aren’t used more when moments like; “he’s very proficient when we have se-“KOR!” 😏 Like that moment will forever be priceless!
as soon as I saw BBRae is for the future, I squealed and liked. Looking forward to the follow-up. Also, very much agree. There's no one else for Dick. To the point I didn't even know Dick x Barbara was even a ship. I thought Star was his only love interest.
Kinda shows how big of an influence the animated series had on people since Dick hasn't been exclusive for Starfire for years. He is a ladies' man like his dad and gets all the girls.
I love the ending of Starfire’s marriage episode. Where she says to Galfore “Whose to know maybe my groom is somewhere on earth.” And as she leaves with Robin. All Galfore does is smiles he knows those two are meant for each other.
Honestly, Robin and Starfire are one of my all time favorite DC superhero ships! Like many others i waited for them to get together since episode 1 of the original Teen Titans series, And the fact that they went with the classic "will they, won't they" route made them officially becoming a couple made the wait all the more worth it because you know development and tension building and what not.
First of all Tim Drake will always be my favorite Robin hands down. Second I think what really makes this ship work is it accurately depicts that awkward shyness of teen romance made worse when you realize Dick never really got to be a kid. He was effectively trained as a child soldier (something I think Batman does not get called on nearly enough) so not only does he not really have friends (at best Bat family is coworkers) but the Titans are effectively his first friends.
I think Batman is usually forgiven because in most adaptations, the robin children and other sidekicks already have the genuine drive to be a hero, and Batman is afraid of that drive turning down darker paths without guidance. There's a reason why the robins usually turn out very different from Batman himself, and it's because he himself wants them to be different from him, and having been traumatised as a child, knows that these kids need both guidance and someone to help them get closure. Like I'm not denying they're basically child soldiers but Batman IS responsible with them.
The "child soldier" thing. Okay, let's do this. It REALLY depends which versions we're talking about. Take Young Justice. Wonder Woman (wish it was a different Leaguer in hind sight) accuses Batman of basically trying to make a copy of himself. Batman says (and demonstrates through his actions in the show) that this is not true, and that he took Dick under his wing as Robin and a son so that Dick wouldn't end up like him. Then you've got Crazy Steve saying, "On your feet, soldier. You've just been drafted into a war." And making Dick eat cave rat.
@@aussiepuppet5250 I'm not sure you could really call him responsible when he's taking them out crime fighting. Like even considering the kids' drive and natural talents nobody should be taking minors out crime fighting. Even Batman didn't fight crime until his adult life. And we're not even talking about teen heroes with powers like Spider-man or Ms Marvel who have powers and just do it anyway, these are just slightly skilled human kids. I get these are comics and not meant to be 100% realistic and the characters themselves are basically there to market to kids but I think any reasonable person would agree Robins should not be crime fighting. I would honestly even give a pass to Nightwing era Robin and Batgirl since they are both very close to adulthood compared to younger Robins.
@@Xecryo It's responsible in the sense that I genuinely cannot imagine anyone stopping them. The robins are skilled, they are driven, and I don't think anything short of locking them up would ever stop them from being vigilantes, which wouldn't really help them at all.
@@Xecryo okay but like. almost all the batkids were already out there fighting crime, Bruce just curbed their murderous intent Dick was out on the streets trying to genuinely MURDER Zucco for killing his parents Jason, I think is the only one you could make an argument for not doing it of his own accord but then again this is the “Robin is magic” of the bunch Tim basically forced Bruce into making him Robin, Bruce just trained him up so he wouldn’t get his head busted while doing so Damian was already raised from 0-10 in the League of ASSASSINS, and similar to Dick, Bruce was tasked with trying to curb that killing streak (whether he rlly contributed to it or not is another story) Duke was already part of the “We Are Robin” movement and is actually a meta anyways so he most likely would’ve been roped in eventually Cass was trained as an assassin too, but unlike Damian, genuinely didn’t even know how to speak or understand people other than the raw emotions and intent in their body language both Steph and Barbara went out on their own, Steph already wanted to take down her dad and Barbara basically said fuck you I’m here, you can either deal with it or perish
I have such a nostalgia for this ship not just because it was what my preteen gal self adored in having a pair of more relatable teen self of superheroes slowly fall in love, but because my brother was a fan of the show and the ship itself. The episode of the team stranded on an alien planet will always remind me of fond memories of my brother and I rewinding the first StarRob scenes to pause at every funny frame of Robin freaking out over being teased so we could call him out. So I'm glad to see this video being made so I can self reflect this as an adult and appreciate that while it's not a perfect show nor a perfect ship, it was memorable nonetheless and will not be forgotten. Thank you, and I look forward to sharing this video with my brother for old times sake.
Season 1- Slade and Robin Season 2- Terra and Beastboy Season 3- H.I.V.E and Cyborg Season 4- Trigon and Raven Season 5-Brotherhood of Evil and Beastboy I see your point. Also I see more chemistry between Beastboy and Terra than with Raven.
What's wrong with Blackfire? The show was also good at making unique villains too, they could make some alien threats up. They also don't have to give Starfire her own villain necessarily but could give her a season trying to find her long lost brother. They did a comic about him but it wasn't really him and that's where this series left it lmao. Maybe a season where Blackfire spends several episodes trying to trick Starfire into a trap. Idk if the Wildfire comic was written during or after the show tho. I'm so sad that Starfire didn't get her own season, kinds makes me wanna just write it for her 😂😂
Robin and Starfire will always be a ship that has a special place in my heart. I remember when I first introduced my younger siblings to this show. They always would freak out when Star and Robin had a moment, they would scream “NOOOO! WHY WOULD YOU STOP THEM FROM KISSING!” Whenever the two were cut off from having their moment. They would also pause the tv and look at me whenever Robin did something stupid that ruined his chances because I also did the same things. My hyperfixations would effectively get in the way of possible friendships and whenever I did things for friends that could be seen as romantic (and I’m talking full blown romantic, like going to dinner, movies, art museums, and walking around historical sites to nerd out) they would ask me why I hadn’t asked my friend out yet. Those gremlins knew that pausing those frames on Robin were calling me out and they said “we need to get you a Starfire” it won’t be just the ship I have the fondest memories of, it will always be the most relatable, and got that awkwardness of liking someone but not wanting to ruin what is good about the friendship you have right. It’s a little crazy to watch a cartoon about superhero’s and just go “oh my god that’s me” this is my teen experience just captured on a screen.
Night wing was the only one that freed himself from the batman emotional shut down toxic curse...he deserves Starfire I love LOVE their mature healthy relationship And the best of her personality still shines even in her adulthood ✨️
Robin and Starfire's relationship is one of the highlights of this show for me, their relationship is just so natural and organic and beautiful. Honestly they're still my OTP above all OTPs for me. AND STARFIRE DESERVES HER OWN SEASON AND I WILL NEVER STOP SCREAMING ABOUT IT. They need to make it happen some how, the TT fanbase is still alive and active and wanting a season 6!! Just give it to us already and give Starfire the attention and arc she deserves!!
The main reason why I hate TTG. TT Robin was a goat and chad with rizz. He made Starfire simp over him since Day 1. And he got a whole movie dedicated for his relationship with her in the end. In TTG, he is a creepy child with baby hands and gets disrespected constantly by his team. It is sad.
@@BeastXISRobin gets bullied by his teammates every episode, with his teammates being VERY cruel to him (like in the fools day episode) and he cant do anything due to how the show works. It is very sad.
I don’t know if this was intentional or not, but Starfire’s bittersweet“I like it more than you’ll ever know” line feel very similar to how Batman confessed his feelings to Cat-Woman even though he didn’t believe they had a future in B:TAS Cat-Woman: “So you do care?” Batman: “More than you’ll ever know.” Considering a lot of the same people worked on these two shows, I wonder if that was a nod to B:TAS?
I will never ship Robin/Nightwing with anyone else. No matter what the incarnation, no matter how well crafted they make his relationship with someone like Batgirl, Starfire IS endgame. Fun fact: When I was a kid, I didn’t even realize he was Robin from Batman. I thought he was his own character (along with the other Titans) because I didn’t know about comics as a kid. But since the idea was to separate him from Batman and make him a hero in his own right. Mission accomplished.
As someone who was introduced to Starfire in the comics, I cannot emphasize enough how good the animated Teen Titan’s version is. I absolutely accept the cartoon’s version over the comics as canon any day of the week. And yeah, that includes shipping.
I wish the show did more with her relationship with raven, I love their dynamic in the episode “switched” in season 1 because at the end starfire and raven were able to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for each other despite their differences. It would have been nice to see their relationship explored more.
Personally, I can see the transition from Starfire in Teen Titans to her in some iterations. She's a literal child/teen in Teen Titans, of course she's not making those kinds of jokes. I think as she grows and matures, it makes sense some of her misunderstanding of earth culture leads her to say things VERY bluntly (which also leads to more autism Starfire proof, ayyy). Also I think half the time she's just trolling the people around her. Like, she knows what she's gonna say is sus as hell, but it's funny to see other's reactions, and she can just play it off as "oh no I don't understand I'm an alien foreigner". That's my headcanon, anyway.
@@valentinkambushev4968 EXACTLY she is straight up trolling/teasing her man at this point. That is the entire energy for me, it's her way of playfully bantering with him and others, it's hilarious.
You forget the episode where Star basically goes through alien puberty. Her appearance is greatly altered to the point she considers herself hideous, hiding her various blemishes under heavy clothes. When her cover is blown in the middle of a fight, her mind immediately goes to worst case scenario of everyone laughing at her. But the opposite happens, Robin shows no judgement or detriment and is nothing but concerned for Star. Unable to take the humiliation she’s creating for herself, she takes off and flies away, running into deep space. Robin doesn’t accept that and has Cyborg heavily modify the Titan’s submarine into a spacecraft they can use to go after her. They follow her trail for several lightyears (props to you Cyborg) and though Robin’s determination to find her is strong, you can tell he is worried sick the entire time. When they catch up to her, she’s in the final stages of her changes and is about to be eaten by an alien predator. The Titans fight ferociously to protect their friend, and it’s Robin who first charges in against an alien monster 3 times his size with no plan of attack (very much out of character for him) or regard for his safety. After holding off the creature, Robin goes to her side and when she doesn’t respond to him, he quickly tries to pull apart Starfire’s cocoon in a desperate attempt to get her to safety, despite Star’s efforts to get him to stop as she doesn’t want him to see her. But Robin doesn’t quit, telling her that he’s her friend and doesn’t care how she looks. And when he finally releases her, he’s the first to reassure her that she looks fine, showing her reflection and revealing that she’s back to normal (besides her new eye beams.) She then promptly kicks the monster’s butt with her new abilities, much to the amazement and surprise of the other Titans. Star’s fear of rejection and anxieties about not fitting in is rampant in this episode, to the point she literally begs her friends not to reject her. But Robin himself tells her, “You’re exactly how you should be. Not matter how you change on the outside, you’ll always be Starfire on the inside.” Those words cause her to blush and put to rest her fears and anxieties. Robstar got some serious bonus points that episode…
The Teen Titans 2003 comic had one of the most emotional Star and Rob moment where she knew he cried and she comforted him by assuring that him grieving is okay
They way I've always viewed it: Barbara is Dick's girlfriend from back home. The long term girlfriend from his youth. Kori is the woman he's meant to be with. The thing with Barbara is that she's an equal to Dick on just about every avenue. This largely has to do with the fact that they grew up in the same environment, they received the same training, and they both have very similar personalities. This makes them a really fun power couple, but it always kinda feels like at the end of the day they're just the himbo boyfriend and the brilliant girlfriend. It's only when Dick is with Kori that it feels like he has a chance to grow as a person and add something to someone else's life and vice versa. You really get a sense that Kori and Dick improve each other whereas Dick and Barbara just enjoy being together.
Actually, Dick and Barbara have a lot of growth together and when they are apart. Their relationship is written extraordinarily well. I used to like Robin and Starfire as a kid, but I’m now firmly with Dick and Barbara. It’s very sweet how much love Dick and Barbara have for each other, and the writing is able to convey that very well. Kori and Dick feels like a childhood girlfriend and boyfriend scenario. It just doesn’t hit the same. They don’t balance each other well. It’s too hot. Not to mention quite a few storylines surrounding Kori show that her growth is best alone.
I enjoy the fight of Starfire and Nightwing. Nightwing may have been trained by Batman but Starfire have had multiple masters who were all warlords from a different planet. Koriand'r simply just has more experience than Grayson ever had in combat being a galactic warrior princess.
I love Dick & Star, I really wish the modern era would stop pushing Barbara and Dick so heavily. No one in the bat family should date is my stance. Loved the video would love more DC Comic shipping videos.
@@valentinkambushev4968 Look, Peter had something good with MJ for years. They were even going to retire from being in the spot pages and let Ben Reily take over.
Dick and Barbara have kinda become like Peter and MJ in comics. They always come back to each other even when they have new love interests so giving them new pairs just always feels redundant.
Don't worry SC, the picture of Batman kissing Star at the end wasn't Bruce Wayne: it was still Dick dressed up as Batman, back when Bruce died and Dick replaced him.
Nah. Dick Babs is written better, more nuanced, less toxic, and more sweet. I can see why people like Dick and Kori, they certainly were my favorite couple as a kid, but growing up, I realized the relationship Barbara and Dick have is simply better.
7:45 actually i think Star and Cyborg have a really deep relationship, as they bond over having experienced racism and Star is the one who reasures him over his metal body not looking "normal".
One little thing I don't see anyone talking about: that episode where Robin's hallucinating, when Starfire doesn't see it he gets angry at her, and he shouts. She gets very sad about this, because he's never gotten angry at her before. He gets angry at Beast Boy for being immature, Cyborg for going rogue, Raven for keeping secrets, but never Starfire. When it finally happens because he's basically losing his mind, you can see how much it hurts her.
Although I've never seen Robin and Raven are you so much he probably even understands her better than the others when did it show he got angry for her keeping secrets he was pretty supportive of her during her end of the world arc
i just want to add that raven and star actually have a pretty solid friendship, it just didnt get explored ALOT like how bb abd cyborg are. but we see lil episodes and moments dedicated to them. wish they let us see more of them tg. ANYWAY ROBSTAR FOREVAAA
The series was canceled before we had Starfire's season. In fact, it was canceled BECAUSE they wanted to do a Starfire centered season. The excuse was "the show is for boys! They won't buy the toys if its centered around a girl and girls don't buy toys." And this isn't me exaggerating, there is a whole ass podcast with the og creators about this that revealed why so many EXCELLENT shows get canceled, and it's because boys are not the main audience that they wanted.
@@despinasgarden.4100 Ok it's very hard to find so I do not have a direct link. But I can give more information here so maybe someone else can find it. It was an interview between Paul Dini (a show creator) and Kevin Smith. Paul goes into the execs thoughts on it, the bullshit behind the belief of toy sales and how they're marketed, and even how this effects the writing behind characters. Specifically that girl characters must ALWAYS be one step behind the boys and how they market towards boys because of toy sales and how even popular shows will be cancelled if they don't attract the right audience. Its 8-9 years old now but you can still find videos on the topic and posts that directly quote it if you look into it. Hope that helps.
No, they didn't. That podcast was talking about Young Justice, NOT Teen Titans. And also, Paul Dini was just GUESSING that YJ was cancelled due to that reason since he experienced it with the show he was running, Unnatural History. Young Justice's cancellation was due to poor toy sales. Greg Weisman has debunked this again and again.
Robin and Starfire are such a wonderful couple. I really wish we could have gotten a sixth season of Teen Titans so we could see their relationship grow bigger after Trouble in Tokyo. Plus Hynden Walch (voice of Starfire) and Scott Menville (voice of Robin) have great chemistry together. Teen Titans Go will NEVER beat the original Teen Titans TV series.
As a kid this was my first ship. This was the couple I wanted to see happen so badly and it’s nice to not have it shoved down my throat through out the show like so many other shows!
I'm actually really glad the payoff for the ship was spread so far along the series. It feels way more natural than most TV/Movie romances, and you can see a lot of ups and downs on their way to being a ship.
I think Dick Grayson works the best when hes a blend of himbo and edgy TT's robin. Dick is supposed to be the light to bruces darkness, he's first and foremost the boy wonder, he's half of the dynamic duo. But he also wants to be his own man, he forms the teen Titans and leads his own team as an amalgamation of batman's intellect and Superman's inspiration. Imo no other robin should lead a team, whenever there's a team up any batfamily character is the defacto leader and that's really reductive. Jason has to many attitude problems to lead, he's a better lancer in the five man band. Tim is the smart one, the genius among geniuses, but he's not social enough to lead a team. And Damian shares Jason's attitude problem. I think that young justice and DCAMU have the best Dick Graysons even though TT has the best robin. DCAMU Nightwing gets his ass handed to him constantly but I love him in Judas contract where he's fun but still intelligent. Young Justice is so much fun though. That Dick brings that young kid energy and that arrogance that I just love. The only flaw is that Dick kind of steals Tim's thing, with him being this super smart master hacker, but the whole batfamily have the same abilities and shine in certain in aspects.
To be fair, while Tim is really smart, the whole bat clan is made up of geniuses. I think if writers were better about showing different KINDS of genius or making some characters more pointedly well-rounded vs specialized, it’d make it easier to differentiate their strengths and not end up “giving stuff away” in reboots.
Tim is actually pretty social, having a lot of civilian friends in his run and founding young justice with Conner and Bart. He just closes himself off when tragedy happens (and yeah it happens. Most of his loved ones died in a span of two years INCLUDING Bruce)
My rule of thumb is that the batboys always work best with A) Paragons who keep them on track B) People physically stronger than them to avoid (or at least be creative with) the damsel in distress tropes. Which is why Batman X Wonder Woman, Dick Grayson X Starfire and Damian Wayne X Superboy are my heavily biased pairings.
Personnaly i find the pairing Damian/Raven from The Apocalypse movie pretty interresting but they never tried it again nor in animated movie nor comics
@@Rom0Des They were wholesome in that one movie but that pairing can't be used in anything else because Raven is an adult while Damian is still only 15. Adult Damian could be paired up with her but so far his only love interest has been Cassie.
In the comics night wing and star fire have one of if not the most healthy relationship in the DC universe Which I think the writer's thought were the problem since there wasn't a lot of drama to be had in it but it was still nice to see them whenever they were together and their daughter was cute And I've said this a million times Batman ex batgirl is such a weird thing Bruce Timm insists on, and it ruins some of the best Batman media to ever exist it's mere presence
I think the only Comic pairing the DC writters dont mess with is Lois and Clark, until the new 52 kinda threw Wondy in the mix for some reason. Usually Lois had to be dead before an alternate pairing is introduce.
@@Dontmindme2mch Yeah that would be pretty cool if they did but I would even settle for exactly how it was before. I don’t understand why they don’t want to give it to us when they just have to know how badly we want it.
Demon slayer, avatar, teen titans, Phineas and ferb, danny phantom, HOLY COW, this trope of romance being built up at the start and climaxing at the end is COMMON
You can ship who you want. Now that’s out of the way, DickXStarfire is the right answer. She does for him what no other ship does. She allows him to be his best self, she has never tried to change him or make him conform into anything he didn’t want to. She’s a cape so you don’t have to worry about her getting shot in the stomach lol and she takes him a little further away from the Bat family which I believe all members should experience (and most of their ships do just that) Plus she’d have a changing effect on the Batfamily as a whole for the positive.
In the comics, they actually wrote these two very well for a relationship just from the best that I have seen. The primary focus seemed to be on StarFire, being very naïve in a current of earth relationship customs, and has her expressed the traditional view of her people, that open expression of feelings is natural. She also seem to have come from a culture that wasn’t very open with things of a sexual nature. Over the course of getting to know, Dick, Grayson, however, she began to better understand the concept of real intimacy, reservation, and restraint that really helps to define relationships. She begins to understand more about the deeper meanings that can be involved with a lot of those feelings and activities, because of the fact that Dick Grayson expresses discomfort with a lot of her openness and lack of restraint. Meanwhile, overtime, she helps Dick Grayson to learn how to better open himself up and express his feelings towards others, and actually begin moving forward to build new relationships with others. They actually framed a storyline and showing that dicks experienced growing up with a Batman made it difficult for him to Develop emotional expression, and he still Harberd a fear of intimacy and closeness due to the loss of his parents. In general, the riders of the titans comic intended on Dick, Grayson and StarFire, to actually get married, and purposely wrote them to have an adult relationship, where they actually helped each other, develop into adults in order to show that this relationship helped Dick Grayson move out of that man’s shadow. They each help each other become better people, and grow in maturity and understanding of each other in the world around them. That’s more than whatever happened between Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon.
I gave up on Teen Titans Go since 2015 or 16 but now I wonder if they have any good episodes because a show that's lasted for 9 years now has to have been doing SOMETHING right.
The musical event episodes are pretty nice as a short film, the ones with "The Night Begins to Shine". They go to an alternate dimension where a specific musical track is magical, and highlight cyborg. The normal episodes are so dreary.
They had this April fools episode that focused on brutal jokes that was low key kind of hilarious. There was some dumb jokes in there too, but one was about all the Titans pretending Robin’s parents were ALIVE AND COMING TO SEE HIM AND HE EXCITEDLY RAN INTO A ROOM ONLY TO GET COVERED IN TAPE. It was cruel, obviously, but then Robin defends his friends WHILE CRYING. It was so ridiculous but you KNOW the writers had fun seeing what they could get away with when no one “mature” is watching their show, so that’s where I eventually saw the appeal lol
RobStar is one of my childhood ships and I have to applaude the show for actually going for it. Watching the show along with Power Rangers, I hated how some of the couples I shipped didn't end up together (Cool idea for a future video). So I was amazed that Teen Titans actually had the balls do that kiss. Can't wait for the BBRae video, I also shipped them when I was younger.
In the Comics they technically have two Kids and their stories are cool... They are from different Stories, but I've seen fanarts that makes the four part of one same worl and is so Precious! Mar'i and Jake Grayson 🫶 As a Nightwing fan and someone at date with the Comic, Even if they keep pushin Dick x Barabara, Kory has my heart. They were so good, Passionate but also Supportive!
It'd be interesting to hear you break down Batman and Wonder Woman's relationship from the JL/JLU animated series. A lot of your points on why Robin and Starfire work together really reminded me of those two, and it's a little funny how both dynamics/relationships mirror each other quite a bit.
They had a child in an alternate timeline This was the case during the Kingdom Come future timeline, where Robin and Starfire had a daughter together who would go on to become a superhero, just like Mom and Pops. She was named Mar'i Grayson, and her vigilante name would be Nightstar.
Honestly when it comes to the older comics... yeah, TT Dick Grayson reminds me of how he actually was before they rebooted his character. He's extremely intelligent and capable and calls the shots with the Titans... and yeah, he's brooding. Especially when he's around characters that aren't the rest of the Bats. He just looks cheerful and silly compared to his Even More Emotionally Constipated family. I think that's part of why it's my favorite animated iteration of him. It reminds me of who he was before writers that explicitly said they didn't like him got a hold of him and gave his friends and skills and personality to his younger brothers.
Oh my god literally 😭😭😭 especially Tom Taylor's current run is like.... that's just some guy... like there's not anything that even identifies him as Dick other than his actual name. Like yeah, he's caring by nature..... is that it??? Where's all his skills and feats and experience and personality??
I personally think the whole sexual aspect of Starfire could be explored with more nuisance in the comics, like really exploring her opinions on Earth and their conservative views on bodily autonomy and relationships considering she comes from a planet which that sees nothing wrong with nudity or sexuality. Maybe that could even bring more topics into the Nightwing and Starfire relationship and how he feels dating a sexually liberated girl and how that's okay despite what Earth's society says, but sadly they just boil down all that cultural background into "she's sexy and that's it"
For the most part in the NTT comics Kori leaned into this characterization. Kori is someone who sees earth as conservative, closed off, and perhaps behind the times. As a former slave she values freedom and the strength she honed to gain it. it’s part of the reason why her and Robin (Dick Grayson) butted heads. In Kori’s opinion Dick is intimately closed off, and offers too much clemency to their enemies. She’s told him to his face that she’s not an idiot and won’t stand to be treated like one. RHatO flanderized her in the opposite direction. Wherein she’s all sex appeal and bloodlusted warrior. it missed the point that NTT Kori was trying to convey. i didn’t like the way she was treated in these. Starfire’s following solo run overcompensated in the opposite the direction of RHatO while leaning into the worse read of her cartoon traits and was worse off because of it.
Please discuss the Robin and Slade hero vs. villain relationship in Teen Titans. Especially how the fandom exploded with various thoughts and headcanons about them.
Your breakdown of the first episode (the one that premiered not the first to be produced) is exactly how I felt as a kid. Keep in mind, I didn't know a thing about teen titans or these characters when this show premiered and when they were promoting it showing off the characters I instantly thought that Robin and Starfire were going to be "the couple" of the series, and the mintue Starfire was going off about Robin missing I was like "yep she's in likes him" 😁. Anyways love the way you transitioned between episodes, although there are some smaller moments between them that you could have mentioned. For instances, in the apprentice episode where Robin is forced to work for Slade and fights the titans, I always noticed how Robin never attacked Starfire and in a moment where Starfire refuses to fight him it cause him to nearly disobeys Slade. Moreover, in the how long is forever episode Robin as Nightwing is relieved to see Star again, and she may clearly be attracted to this grown version of him. Furthermore, in the episode Haunted where Robin is seeing and feeling Slade's ghost. He snaps at her (which she remarks he doesn't usually do) and she at one point has to knock him out (which shocked me as a child 😳). Also, in the episode Revolutions she hugs him and I think that's the first time she did that with him where before she had huged everyone else. Last notes: One, they do have interesting opposite personalities like Star puts all of feelings out there and Rob is more closed off and keeps things in. Two, I think most people who watched this show and didn't read comic had they same reaction about Star that you did. Three, other video you could make in light of this one is definitely BB & Rae and Batman and Wonder Women from JLU. They had a similar dynamic with Diana wanting more from Bruce finding him charming and him using the excuse of not wanting to distracted from his work, but there was certainly lots of flirtation and chemistry that I'm still eager to see bloom into romance in other adaptations. Thanks if you've read my essay here. Have a blessed one everyone 😎.
Also at the end of the apprentice episode, even after everything robin did, starfire is the one that apologises for ever doubting him, which shows how much she trusts in him as their leader. There's also the quest episode when robin goes away to train and starfire misses him so much that she becomes sad just thinking about their moments together. Then when she joins in with beast boy in dressing up as robin, she's there roleplaying a flirty conversation between her and robin 😭😭
Not sure what other couples ur gonna talk about in the og teen titans but I hope u talk about either the potential that beast boy and Raven could've had or beast boy x terra I'm fine with u covering either one or both bc our favorite green boy deserves some spotlight with the girls. Great video sarcastic
Starfire is optimistic and sweet and kicks all the butt, and she is also entirely secure in her sexuality and feels no need to hide things or be embarrassed and is not nearly as naive as people think.
I don’t care if the comics don’t have them together currently or what happens with them in the future I am always going to ship these two. Not only are they both interesting and a beautiful couple to look at (because they’re both equally hot), they’ve always had a sweet and fun relationship expand over different types of media. This show just my first anchor to this ship as an OTP for me and like you said I will pick Starfire and Dick as a couple every single time.
Starfire in the og Teen Titans was great, I didn't think her lack of knowledge on earth was annoying until TT Go, they really over done that and made it annoying
Their relationship is just so adorable! Also, yeah, aside from the movie, I do which Starfire got her own season. Maybe if we got that season 6, then maybe Starfire would be the main focus, but other than that, she’s great!!!
Starfire and raven have always been my favorite titans because of the og Cartoon Network series. And every iteration of them that I’ve read afterwards still keeps them in that spot
I see people in the Batfamily as *family* and personally Starfire/Nightwing just have that spark about them despite different writers trying to pull them apart
Is it wrong that after watching this video several times already, and some of the clips, that I can come to the conclusion that the Robstar relationship, being not only cute and wholesome here, but, in a way, Starfire is being a hero herself and saving Robin, not only physically when they're on the job, but saving him mentally and emotionally from himself and his constant need to focus on the job just by being there when he needs someone to talk to?
Why are you asking if it’s wrong? How could an opinion be wrong? Just say the statement and don’t try to make ppl feel bad for you for no reason before you do it to get more likes..
30:39 I mean, we all knew it was coming next, but nice to have him confirm it. Do wonder if Cyborg and BB will get touched on, not sure it was a massive ship, but it was probably the only one with anything teased at all for him in the show
I too was introduced to Starfire by this show. But gods know I love the look of the comics Starfire. And also in one of the comics Barbara came to talk to Dick about something and Starfire answered the door in just a robe and Barbara was pissed that Dick not only got a new girlfriend but an upgrade. StarfirexNightwing forever.
Robin was my fav out of the titans, and I do remember some of the darker episodes that involved him. Like, holy shit, some of the stuff he was involved with when it came to Slade...damn. I vividly remember the episode where Robin was insistent that Slade was there and no one else saw Slade. But Slade was in Robin's mind, taunting him, since Robin couldn't simply believe he was gone.
I heard that if the original Teen Titans animated series wasn´t cancelled BlackFire was going to be the main villain of their next season which means they were probably planning to focus more on StarFire because she was going to go through a tough time just like Robin had with Slade having to face the backstabbing sister deep down she still loves
1:56 THANK YOU! I watched Teen Titans 2003 way before I ever got into comics, and because a fan of Robin through it (more than Batman the Animated Series). But in high school, as I wiki dived into the brand new world of comics, I discovered a lot of the cool shit I dug about Robin was Tim’s. The staff will never not bug me. Tim has it for a reason, because unlike the other Robins he needed a weapon to compensate for not being a physical prodigy like Dick, a born brawler like Jason, or a engineered “perfect” blend like Damian (plus Lady Shiva, but eh, convoluted to explain). Now Dick has surpassed Tim as my favorite in the batfamily, due to how they’ve been using Tim for like….the last decade, but I wish they’d stop distributing all his cool stuff. PS Pre-New 52 Tim Drake is the best
Teen Titans was when I first discovered shipping. ...But, just my luck, the couple I was shipping was Raven and Beast Boy. ...My luck has barely improved since.
That bit was by far one of the funniest moment in the show. I saved the gif even.
@@TrelliessRose Props to spelling that name of all things XD
I liked the episode where they reversed the dynamic by having the team visit Starfire's planet. Suddenly she has to ride herd on her friends going, "NO!! Don't sit on that!! That's not a chair, it's the family pet!"
It’s one of my favorites
@suspici0us_cat We asked for it already, and the monkey's paw curled because we weren't specific enough.
@suspici0us_cat monkey's paw is a story about getting wishes but not in the way you want. Think evil genie. Yeah, I'm talking about teen titans go
Yeah; it’s my bias bc I am a first-gen American but Starfire obliviousness I’d clearly just cultural differences, where they go to Tamaran the other Titans are the ones who are so out of their depth
To be fair, her powers come from her emotions. So if she feels weak, she'll be weak. But she's nothing to fuck with
@@RandoSando. they really should have given her her own season. Have her take down the alien trafficking industry or something.

To be fair characters being as strong as the plot needs them to be is just a thing in comics in general if not just most fiction, I mean one day Superman will casually take on the whole Justice League and then the next will struggle against a guy who can maybe throw a car
Your head-canon fits with her characterization. She like Superman in that she's powerful but holds back because she doesn't want hurt anyone.

@suspici0us_cat sadly never going to happen, theyd rather DIE than finish the goddamn show they started. also they're teen titans go simps -_-
@@theflaminglitten-fo6jd in all honesty I rather let Teen Titans remain how it is
In today's world it would've been censored or sum
He can nerd out about languages and get kissed on the mouth. Good for him.
I loved this pairing quite a lot, to the point I went to the original comics. And I found a healthy pairing that only got separated because the writers changed. Seriously they were about to get married and preceded the era where Barbara got aged down for Robin.
Barbra should have stayed his older sister, but the incestuous fucks ruined it.
That's more of an issue of the universe being rebooted with Crisis on Infinite Earths(undoing basically ALL character development for most of the DC characters)

I hated how that ruined Raven. Her last canon appearance for a decade was her dying as a villain.

Dick and barbara is mor popular than dickkory? nah they arent.
Where did you that DickBabs is more popular? Dickory is the one many people who doesn't read comics know because of the adaptations

It’s probably better that they didn’t. You know it would drive fans absolutely mad with the love triangle
@@nervousbreakdown711 that is very true
Did young justice ever get into where Starfire was in that universe, though? I stopped around season 3/4 when they first introduced Tara but don’t recall them ever mentioning her.
As of the end of season 4, no Tamaraneans. And while I like Star, that version of Dick already has chemistry with Zatana more than Barbara, and there are so many characters who compete to even be secondary supporting roles in someone else's journey. So as much as I love Star, there is no room for her. If there's another season, then there are more important story threads to wrap up and characters to get a last chance at the spot light.
@@bthsr7113 Dick and Zatana being a ship was gross. I guess it was Dick's payback on Bruce.

Technically it was Superman who made Dick realize he could be better.
I always enjoyed these two. Starfire’s childish innocence and pure heart was a shining light in a world of villains and corrupt heroes run amok.
Where were the corrupt heroes in this show? Even in DC as a whole, corrupt heroes don't tend the be the big ones unless they're written poorly.

Ironically, we moved on from Starfire being heavily sexualized to Raven being heavily sexualized cause her leotard really got us that much.

@@Xecryo okay but like. almost all the batkids were already out there fighting crime, Bruce just curbed their murderous intent
Dick was out on the streets trying to genuinely MURDER Zucco for killing his parents
Jason, I think is the only one you could make an argument for not doing it of his own accord but then again this is the “Robin is magic” of the bunch
Tim basically forced Bruce into making him Robin, Bruce just trained him up so he wouldn’t get his head busted while doing so
Damian was already raised from 0-10 in the League of ASSASSINS, and similar to Dick, Bruce was tasked with trying to curb that killing streak (whether he rlly contributed to it or not is another story)
Duke was already part of the “We Are Robin” movement and is actually a meta anyways so he most likely would’ve been roped in eventually
Cass was trained as an assassin too, but unlike Damian, genuinely didn’t even know how to speak or understand people other than the raw emotions and intent in their body language
both Steph and Barbara went out on their own, Steph already wanted to take down her dad and Barbara basically said fuck you I’m here, you can either deal with it or perish
Season 1- Slade and Robin
Season 2- Terra and Beastboy
Season 3- H.I.V.E and Cyborg
Season 4- Trigon and Raven
Season 5-Brotherhood of Evil and Beastboy
I see your point. Also I see more chemistry between Beastboy and Terra than with Raven.
Got any evil villain in the comic that would make the best foil to Starfire?
Raven and Beast boy have such a sibling-relationship in the show I feel a bit uncomfortable when anyone ships them romantically lmao
i didnt realize it but BB got 2 whole ass seasons damn 😂

It is sad.

I don’t know if this was intentional or not, but Starfire’s bittersweet“I like it more than you’ll ever know” line feel very similar to how Batman confessed his feelings to Cat-Woman even though he didn’t believe they had a future in B:TAS

@@scribbles3721 Batman the animated series
Especially if it involves humiliating Dick.
The reason why I still ship dick and kory bcuz their relationship is so much healthier
this was one of the cutest ships from my childhood ^^ mainly because they had little drama and were great friends

7:45 actually i think Star and Cyborg have a really deep relationship, as they bond over having experienced racism and Star is the one who reasures him over his metal body not looking "normal".
And it must be admitted to the screenwriters that in recent films about Teen Titans they paired the couples appearing there (almost) perfectly.
"But if you ask me where dick should be, don't bother because it's Starfire."
One of the best quotes I've heard
They won't buy the toys if its centered around a girl and girls don't buy toys."
And this isn't me exaggerating, there is a whole ass podcast with the og creators about this that revealed why so many EXCELLENT shows get canceled, and it's because boys are not the main audience that they wanted.
Do you have a link? Of the podcast.

Ok it's very hard to find so I do not have a direct link.

Ah. My bad.
Closest we got to that is Harley Quinn version of Rick
To be fair...having Jason lead a team of zombies was fun😂
Dick didn't steal anything, he was a genius and a hacker before Tim ever existed lol. The other Robins steal from him, not the other way around.

I think the best part of the ship is she exist beyond being the "love interest". She has her own mini arcs beyond her love for him.
In the comics night wing and star fire have one of if not the most healthy relationship in the DC universe Which I think the writer's thought were the problem since there wasn't a lot of drama to be had in it but it was still nice to see them whenever they were together and their daughter was cute
And I've said this a million times Batman ex batgirl is such a weird thing Bruce Timm insists on, and it ruins some of the best Batman media to ever exist it's mere presence
I think the only Comic pairing the DC writters dont mess with is Lois and Clark, until the new 52 kinda threw Wondy in the mix for some reason. Usually Lois had to be dead before an alternate pairing is introduce.

Fr, like I dont care how well written for dick and barbs.. I just still dont see them as a couple..
I gave up on Teen Titans Go since 2015 or 16 but now I wonder if they have any good episodes because a show that's lasted for 9 years now has to have been doing SOMETHING right.
Not really.
The only episode I can recommend is "Too serious" because it shows a problem DC in particular has suffered from for years and still does.
I saw a recommended youtube video that Teen Titans Go (the shitty cartoons, not the comic of the 2003 show) is apparently going "downhill" 😂

It'd be interesting to hear you break down Batman and Wonder Woman's relationship from the JL/JLU animated series. A lot of your points on why Robin and Starfire work together really reminded me of those two, and it's a little funny how both dynamics/relationships mirror each other quite a bit.
They had a child in an alternate timeline
This was the case during the Kingdom Come future timeline, where Robin and Starfire had a daughter together who would go on to become a superhero, just like Mom and Pops.

The Tamaranean power to learn languages by kissing is one of the most mundane, yet super helpful powers I've heard of.
Please discuss the Robin and Slade hero vs. villain relationship in Teen Titans. Especially how the fandom exploded with various thoughts and headcanons about them.
This relationship is so wholesome.
Indeed. Genius and crime fighting boy slowly falling in love with powerful and adorable alien girl
Honestly, I always prefered BBTerra over BBRae
The overdid them both in tt go robin tries to be a leader but she’s he’s just an idiotic control freak starfire is just completely ignorant
Man, I was so obsessed with the two of them as a couple when I was a teenager. I was so excited when they finally made it official in the movie lol
Do wonder if Cyborg and BB will get touched on, not sure it was a massive ship, but it was probably the only one with anything teased at all for him in the show
Wasn't Cyborg shipped with Bumblebee and Jinx though?
@@subjectverbargument9871I mean
Zone made a whole animation about that
OTP OF MY CHILDHOOD!!! I love this ship so much, I will not hear of any other Robin ships because of how good this series was.
What does otp mean?
@@audreyharris7643 OTP=One True Pairing
Basically it’s your favorite fictional romantic ship
@@Bridget466 makes sense
The One True Morty!
They were what made me learn to ship 🥺 My first OTP as well!!
20:10 “yet he can’t solve the mystery of getting his head out of his own ass” definitely using that line
The fact that I was just binging your videos and you bless me like this.
I’m still waiting on that Avatar: The Last Airbender video
Teen titans starfire is the best tbh❤. Comics is just wild.
