    Define Muzzle Brake:
A muzzle brake or recoil compensator is a device connected to, or a feature integral to the construction of, the muzzle or barrel of a firearm or cannon that is intended to redirect a portion of propellant gases to counter recoil and unwanted muzzle rise.[1] Barrels with an integral muzzle brake are often said to be ported. The concept of a muzzle brake was first introduced for artillery and was a common feature on many anti-tank guns, especially those mounted on tanks, in order to reduce the area needed to take up the strokes of recoil and kickback. They have been used in various forms for rifles and pistols to help control recoil and the rising of the barrel that normally occurs after firing. They are used on pistols for practical pistol competitions, and are usually called compensators in this context.[2]
    WHO WE ARE:
    IT’S IN THE MANUFACTURING.
Design and materials are part of the equation, but there is no substitute for thirty years of manufacturing excellence. Every Dead Air suppressor is manufactured in Georgia by highly trained Americans intent on manufacturing the best suppressor on the market. Our standards are simple, “good isn’t good enough” and if a product comes off the line not up to par, then the can gets canned. It’s that simple.

Regarding torque with crows foot wrenches: Do the easy no brain thing. Put the crows foot on at a 90 degree angle to the torque wrench handle. This results in the torque wrench that outputs the correct torque within the accuracy range of the wrench. No math, no website, easy peasy. This works with crows foot wrenches, and similar provided they do not stick out too far and you are using a normal torque wrench. If you need to be using super precise wrenches and torque values its not ok (Ie, don't use this on your home fusion reactor, world domination device, or towel rack). In this case, most torque wrenches have a 3-5% accuracy range, so the difference in output with the above technique winds up in this area anyway, not a big deal and reading this post is more difficult than following its advice.
TL/DR: I gave a tip to make using the torque wrench easier. Yes, this is TLDR trolling, enjoy.

The ID on the 5/8 shims is a bit of a pain to deal with too. On my bergara H14 barrel the ID of the shims was barely small enough to catch the shoulder of the threads. I dont know if it matters but I had a hell of a time trying to keep the shim stack centered on the barrel.
I dont remember if this was an issue on my 556 since it has a flared out shoulder the same diameter as the shims.

@@The10thManRules I do have the proper tools and have done many muzzle devices before. The reason for the question is I have a Nomad 30 and use the Keymo QD mount. I received some info from Dead Air CS that I could not time the device. I did not agree with that and linked this video. But I don't know everything so reached out to Dead Air again and got a completely different response. Information stated that the brake seats on the inside shoulder and not the rear shoulder which made no sense, shims cannot be used which again made no sense. My last rifle I timed the brake with shims, then removed those and mic'd them. Then I machined a single stainless shim and used that in place of the many thin ones. I can control OD that way as well. I always want my brakes timed so the Nomad has the same orientation on every rifle I switch between. Just did not make sense that I couldn't treat a flash hider and muzzle brake the same when this video says I can. Thanks.

Please use Rocksett! I love Mr Pappas but as a Gunsmith who works at a range I see way to many muzzle devices loosen up while shooting their suppressed rifles. Most people do NOT have the proper tq wrench required to seat threads (especially a Snap On ;-). If you use Rocksett and snug it on tight the Rocksett takes the lack of exact tq specs out of the failure scenario (in most cases). Lastly, this only applies to clean threads. Rocksett wont work over dirty, fouled, or greasy threads. If any of this is unclear go see your local certified Gunsmith and pay him/her to do it for you. It shouldnt cost more than $20
Just my two pennies. As Pappas says "To each their own". ;-)

Typically when a suppressor is used the "point of impact" well shift. When installing the muzzle device, what is the process of "timing" the device so when

    • @Tbowie13

Well. I just switched to keymo for my Saker. Costly yes. I ordered 2 flash hiders and neither one included shims. Yet, it says time the flash hider at 12 o’clock.
    What is your thoughts ??

    • @pgeorg01
      @pgeorg01 3 роки тому

I can think of only 2 reasons to time a flash hider:
      1. Aesthetics. If you are pinning and welding most people want that weld at the 6 o'clock position so you need to ensure the pre-drilled hole on the flash hider is pointing to 6 o'clock. Also some people may want the tines oriented a certain way or for the can to sit a certain way when tightened.
      2. Functionality. If you have a tine positioned at 6 o'clock and you shoot prone, you may have less gas going straight down into the dirt. Thus, less dust cloud. I feel this is a bit optimistic because you still have jets of gas at 5 and 7 o'clock. Not to mention if you are canting the rifle/yourself, this whole thing goes out the window :). That said Dead Air puts the pre-drilled hole I mentioned in #1 directly in line with one of it's tines. So you can achieve #1 and #2 simultaneously.
      Best of luck to you!

    Crush washers not recommended?

No, they can cause alignment issues with the suppressor.

What orientation do you align the prongs at?

    • @SuperFreshkid06
      @SuperFreshkid06 3 роки тому

I’d like to know this as well. Based off what he said in the video I don’t think there’s any particular alignment as the prongs do not need to be in a specific position. However, seeming the KeyMo only allows you to attach your suppressor to the flash hider on at a single point it may be preferred that this part of your flash hider is aligned somewhere between 12 and 2 O’clock assuming your looking down the barrel from the shooting position. If I’m wrong please correct me.
Edit: The pre-drill pin/weld hole should be at 6 o’clock. This will set your mounting key slot (single point which your suppressor mounts) to 12 o’clock.

Cool device, but Dead Air supplied my local store where I bought it with zero spacing shims in ANY of the packages. So it's not timed correctly and driving me nuts. Pretty big oversight, not happy.

That store is robbing you. Every muzzle device I've ever bought came with shims.
Regardless, buy as as many sets are you need. They're around $6 ea.

By taking the muzzle break on and off to clean your crown. does it not damage your threads over time? Also noticed you are going to the range immediately after rocksetting your device. Are you not going to let it set for 24 hours? Your might have some new buddies watching this. Hate to see you lead them astray.

Why shims vs a crush washer?

Crush washers can cause alignment issues if they don't crush evenly.

Kinda bummed. Purchased a SANDMAN L, paid their price and waited for the ATF. Got the tax stamp, took the can home and bam. No shims set included. No info included in box. Awesome. With other shim set I cant get it to go on correctly. Granted I have a dozen cans, and have put every stinking flash hider on said guns, not my first rodeo. Have all the tools needed for the job but for the life of me cant get it to correctly seat. Attachment is clunky at best. I guess Ill reach out to them and ask what the hell is going on, and in the mean time Ill take the Surefire out of the safe and put it back on. At least Im able to align it.

    🆘🔫Can anyone answer this Q????
I'm running a Dead Air Nomad 30 and purchased a DA Key-Mo & 1/2 x 28 DA muzzle to run on my DD MK18. I upgraded my rail to a Geiselle MK4 Federal rail & my Nomad 30 with Key-Mo won't make full contact with the brake as the rail is 1/4 inch long.
My Q is how many shims are ok before causes issues!? if I can use ALL the shims that came with the DA brake and or more to make up the distance? How many are safe as I understand no crush washer's are recommended. I hate to mill or replace the rail as again it's Mk4 Fed rail!
Any suggestions or ideas I'll send you a PTSD.Help challenge coin😁👮‍♂️
Thanks to here or email me please Joe@PTSD.Help

I would not recommend using all the shims as they are meant for timing the muzzle device, not actually taking up space. Knowing that the ID of the Geissele rail is smaller than the OD of the Nomad, the only thing I would recommend is swapping out your DD barrel for something 1/2" longer. Sucks to spend more money on the setup, but the only other option is to either replace or cut down the Geissele rail.

Find a local machinist and have the rail cut would be the only option unless you want to move up to a longer barrel.

I spoke to both dead air and Daniel's Defense who recommended I shim to fit. I used my alignment rod and also had my local smith look at. Seems good. I appreciate guys.

bought a dead air can and its absolute garbage. Would not buy from them again. Baffle strike within the first few days of owning it. RMA'd it and it took 5 months to fix {waiting on parts} IF youre running an AK platform dont bother with these. Use a 762x39 only can. Multi caliber are just a pain to deal with. Ive spent so much money just trying to make it work on the end of my rifle and not wiggle or be out of timing. Not to mention they dont make Keymount muzzle brakes in 14x1 LH to 5/8x24 pitch. And their Keymount Hubs are out of stock so good luck.
