- Our engineers have come up with the answer to the age old question: Is a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine better? With our new Rotax 600 H.O. E-TEC and 1200 4-TEC engines, the answer is YES.
Our founder, Joseph-Armand Bombardier, was always looking for new ways to make life better through technology. Thats what led him to create his first snowmobile at age 17 from a Model T and the first mass-produced snowmobile, the Ski-Doo, 50 years ago. That same spirit of innovation drives us every day to make snowmobiles that make you a better rider.

Gotta love E-Tec. Better fuel economy than 4-strokes, more power, less weight.
@TheOfficialKC quick question: do those new style speedometers light up at night.....someone told me they are just in black digits or something like that......i noticed something between the speedo and tach. is that the temp gage or fuel gage? .....on all new sleds in general i mean....
That is one of the most beautiful models of an engine
I really wish they would offer the 650 and 850 etec in can am atv’s. How cool would that be
@TheOfficialKC cool. so what are your thoughts on diesel engines in cars? i'm a big fan, but for some reason Europe seems to warm up to them more than north america. also, where do u live?
@TheOfficialKC how bout emissions?
Rotax is known for unreliability in the aircraft industry. Your 2 stroke looks wonderful!
@quincee33 Yeah. The 2-strokes match and beat 4-strokes now. And with DI there is a lot of untapped technology for stop/start, cylinder deactivation, and while cruising running like a 4-stroke in order to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy more.
muito bom
@TheOfficialKC cool, but what are the laws in north america? are 2 strokes gonna be outlawed? hope not, but i've heard that this might happen.
@quincee33 I don't know. I know a lot more about the engine technology than the features. I don't live in an area where I can get into the sport.
wow I hope they make a super sport 600 2 stroke motorcycle with their engine!
Rotax builds better engines. This wasn't compared to their best engines. ( Rotax builds aircraft engines ) I' ll trust those. 2:32 is like Honda's HPP. This is nothing more than a shitty commercial no numbers you can trust in this video.
Looks on...
Rotax aircraft engines are hardly the paragon of engine design. not sure where you got that opinion from
800 e-tec very reliable engine 22000 km no probleme very good on fuel better than 4 stroke!
pierre lemens havent had any good luck with them yet
@quincee33 Their plan was to kill the 2-strokes before the technology came. But the 2-strokes stuck around long enough until the technology is available to make them superior again. Their plan didn't quite work out. It worked in dirt bikes(mostly).
When people start seeing what these are capable of either Yamaha better start making 2-strokes or suffer problems. I heard Polaris might go all 2-stroke(like Evinrude boat engines) but don't know if that is true.
But the smell and smoke is the best part!
These e-tec 2strokes has less smoke than many 4strokes at cold start. I got the 900 ace 4stroke. It's far from smoke less when starting in my cold garage. Still much less smoke than my old fan cooled Polaris. New Polaris sleds still runs very dirty.
I love the smell of 2 stroke. Diesel too... but man nothing smells better than a stroke.
please put this 2 stroke technology back into the Aprilia motorcycles!!!
That would be awesome! Fantastic idea!
what happens with the fuel, is there any need for premix? or does the piston get lubed from a sump
Cannot be premix or the bottom end would seize up, the oil is injected into the bearings, just a more advanced, targeted lubrication system based loosely on what Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki have been doing since the early 70's.
Air is drawn into the crankcase then forced (with oil from the lubrication system) Then forced up through the transfer ports to the cylinder blowing the burned (and some fresh) air out the exhaust port. When the exhaust port is closed ONLY then is petrol injected (No unburned petrol out the exhaust hence better economy) Lubrication is still "Total Loss"
@quincee33 I ride dirt bikes mainly. I also ride street bikes and my uncle has a sick boat. I am also just very interested in the technology(I am a mechanical engineer). I have always wanted to go snowmobiling though.
@TheOfficialKC say what? are you into dirt bikes or ATV's? u seem to know alot about the engines.... are u into PWC?
Is lubrication oil reclaimed from the crank case after used? If not, I wonder how much oil is injected for each cycle. The video says that 1Q of oil per season. Any one know how many hour of use is that equivalent to?
oil injected engines use under 100:1 and often close to 200:1
noooo doubt
Bought a sled yesterday with those black things on the heads and didn’t know what they were . Now i know, RAVE is cool
Pre Audi Lambo sound tho 😍
(At 2:40)
Since when is 8,000 calculations per second powerful? Intel 4004 did 92k, 40 years ago!
Thrasher9905 bexause it dosent calculate zeros and ones its calculating presice valve timing intervals due to a variety of variables such as throttle input, air/fuel mixture etc, and each one of those is a calculation
Thrasher9905 but keep in mind you aint playing fortnite. your running a engine lol
Wickedalpaca23 it still works on binary, running an engine is much easier than running an operating system
Nice
So how many pistons does a average snowmobile engine have?
2
@rdyjur "whereas a two stroke there is a slight delay in the power until you hit your max rpm"....the word you are looking for is Powerband and it doesn't occur at the max RPM. And scrogy is correct a 2 stroke will always produce more power and torque (yes I said torque on purpose) than a 4 stroke for the same displacement normally aspirated. It's physics.
which is why there will never be competing 4 strokes in the same displacement, my thought was always that this would matter if you could only get 4 strokes in the same displacements as 2 strokes but since the 4 strokes are always made in much higher displacements its a moot point.
wild !!
Ничего не понял но интересно как рев клапана работают.
@SCROGY
a 4 stroke engine generates better power through the whole rpm range whereas a two stroke there is a slight delay in the power until you hit your max rpm. 4 strokes are waay snappier!yes motor has much more to it making it heavy and hard for guys like you to figure out. and once u learn to use compression braking u will rarely have to use your brakes unless you're flying down the mountain at mach 1. suspension is meant to be set up for your style when u buy it, with basic tools
Привет! У меня Skandic SWT 600 E-TEC. Как часто, на каком пробеге необходимо менять, добавлять смазку Isoflex B52 в подшипники коленвала?
rotax the only engine you have to change crank and recoil every season
When you’re pushing out more power through your engines than every other competitor you tend to blow the parts made for those lesser powered sissy sleds.
@quincee33 I haven't been a fan of diesel cars. They never seemed worth it for the price just to save some gas money although if it was that or hybrid I would get a diesel. Diesel is definitely not good for performance cars.
What I would like to see is DI 2-strokes in cars. It would make them cheaper and more efficient.
Thx for replying!! Not sure if i saw your reply from 9 years ago. Different email account. So thank you for answerimg my many questions, lol. Happy holidays!
@quincee33 The only thing that the laws ban are sleds with high emissions. And like I said before the 2-strokes with DI have better emissions than 4-strokes.
The same happened to boats a few years ago. Everyone said 2-strokes were getting banned, but you can't ban technology. They just set a emissions cap so the companies developed 2-stroke Direct Injection and now you see them everywhere.
Now the tech is being passed on to snowmobile. Hopefully motorcycles are next.
@TheOfficialKC i guess Yamaha made a mistake putting all their eggs in one basket. i heard they are gonna go back to some 2 strokes after going all 4 stroke.
@rdyjur I don't know where you got that from but it's false. Two strokes definitely hit harder and make more power. 4 strokes do not generate better power through the whole RPM range (their RPM range is wider). They don't hit as hard and thus just feel like they have a wider power band. Why do you think 4 strokes with double the cc were allowed to compete against 125's (250 4 strokes) and 250's (450 4 strokes) in AMA motocross? Because a two stroke essentially makes twice as much power.
which would matter, if you were comparing the same displacement motors, but you arent.
@TheOfficialKC awesome. i guess Yamaha screwed up big time going all 4 stroke...lol...that's what happens when u put all your eggs in 1 basket.
@Brad Wolf thx man.
🎉

Sure sounds like a converted Evinrude outboard engine.
Didn't Bombardier buy Evinrude to use their technology? Or were u being kinda sarcastic?
@@quincee3376 Any of the 2 stroke engines in the snow mobiles are basically the Evinrude outboard engines converted. Now that Bombardier has cancelled the Evinrude outboard engines (big mistake in my book), I'm curious at their next step in marine propulsion.
@@Tchristman100 ahhhh. I gotcha. Thx. Btw, do u like 4 strokes in sleds? Or are u more into boating?
@@quincee3376 4 stroke are always good. A little tricky in cold weather with oil sump.
@@Tchristman100 thanks. Happy Holidays to you and your family!
But i was raised with 2 stroke smell
the 600 two stroke etec uses less oil over its life than the 4 stroke and gets better fuel mileage and therefore less pollution
yeah...because its life is a quarter the length of a 4 stroke haha.
ya ok buddy , at 10 000 km all u have to do is change the spark plugs, they are as reliable as it gets , haven't ever had a problem with a etec , if u do its cause ur moding it and doing somethings stupid, leave it stock and throw a ggb mountain can on it and it will never let u down, mines started all winter in right cold weather no problem, push the button and it instantly starts.
Thats impossible it lets out some of the lower dens clean air mix each time on its stroke impossible not to because both ports are open at the bottom of the powerstroke. I do agree on one thing they are alot cleaner then the older models for sure really theyre getting to where theyre both going to put out same emissions only a matter of time. Cant beat the smell of a two stroke tho
Which motor does the 3D have? 787?
the RfI has a 782cc enginge and the Di versions have a 951cc
Now if they could just get there 2 strokes to last longer.
relating to quads your motor sucks im sorry but it has no bottom end and it has blown up already in my quad after 20 hours and thats a huge problem but you sleds are awesome...
"Virtually no 2-stroke smoke". 1 sec later there's smoke all over the place 1:22
Our family bought four 2014 800 etec's and they all over heat @ -20 C and conditions that other sleds don't over heat in. 1st new machines in 6 years for us and we are pissed off. All dealerships & Doo's head office claim they have not heard of this problem. Yet it has been going on for years only to get worse this year after their BS fix. The machines are great in every other way, BUT...If you can't ride them for more than 15 minutes without overheating.
we all have etecs 800/600s we don't have any overheating problem even at 0 celcius
almost as perpetuum mobile
Ski doo doesn't mention the engines are designed AND built in Austria.
Bombardier should bring back the ZX Chassis Everyone hates the Rev Chassis up North
like Polaris brought back Indy 600
155 HP, seriously? That may be fine for my grandma, but what do you have for the hardcore rider? :)
155hp is a ton, look up power to weight ratio. Maybe you will learn something
ㅜ
2 strokes - More power per cc. More SUDDEN response (They hit harder). Simpler design. Easier to work on. Less compression braking. The only advantages 4 strokes have come BECAUSE they make less power per cc. 4 strokes blow. I hate 'em.
And Honda did this Di two stroke thing 20 years ago. It was called the Honda EXP. It had two injectors on the head and shot raw fuel and raw gas into the combustion chamber. They used in on a Baja dirt bike and then it disappeared.
My buddies and I have gotten anywhere from 265 to 4800 miles on skidoo engines.. that between 6 different sled's. One of them had 2 yes 2 engines with in 4800 miles. Ski doo would do NOTHING about any of these machines!! JUNK!!!! Never again!!!
So a heavier more complicated engine than I had in the early 2000s? I’ve got a 2000 formula deluxe 700 that will keep up with any modern Ski Doo for like 1/10th the price.
Who else thinks that they should start putting two strokes like this in cars instead of trying to boost little engines like an ecoboost
Or a 2 stroke moto like 79 Kawasaki H2. How great would it be to smoke out a red light then blow away a R1 with a 600 twin.
@@danielmook3953 yasss
@SCROGY
I am definitely a 2 stroke guy but i've rode a lot of both in mountains, trails, ditches, praires, etc. you're argument against 4 strokes was awful. stick to your 1980s dirt bikes
I’m good I’ll stick with my 800 p-tek that doesn’t feel like a dog on the throttle
the design for the rave valves with the springs going around the bellows for the e-tec motors is probably the biggest pile of shit Rotax has ever decided to make. The engineers working on the valves definitely didn't graduate first in their class
My 2015 summit carb is better then any 600 etec I’ve ever drove
They should be making cars
@quincee33 If you weigh the advantages of each there is no reason to go 4-stroke now.
An 800cc 2-stroke is cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, makes 25% more power and weighs 80lbs less than a 1200 4-stroke. And gets the same MPG and emissions.
A 600cc 2-stroke is much cheaper to buy and maintain, weighs 100lbs less, gets better gas mileage and lower emissions than an equal power 1200 4-stroke.
and maintain? so when it blows up every 5000miles and the 4 stroke keeps going and going and going......
Not to be confused with "Rotec". A bad name in aviation motors.
@rdyjur It's is not awful. It's physics dude. You can't argue against it. And it has NOTHING to do with being a bike or a snowmobile. It's about the laws of nature. When there's combustion on every turn of the crank you're going to develop more power and a harder hitting power. You need to learn what a logical fallacy is and quite frankly you also need to go back to physics 101.
Sorry Ski Doo but you can't tailor a sleds suspension to everyone. Riders of different weights and skill levels need different set ups. That's just physics and you can't solve that problem without adjusting. FACT.
4 strokes make me want to vomit.
You should test a few of the 4 strokes, I think the AC 7000 have a sexy sound ^^,
Truth BeTold cheap polaris oil and 2 stroke engine with carburators nearly made me throw up for real. 2 stroke exhaust sucks. (except e-tec)
ok
2 strokes are only better for blowing up.
David King - no, that's not the only ting they do well - they also foul up the spark plug quite nicely.
You obviously haven't driven a e-tec !
Rotax the best engines? Are you serious
yup!!
well they are in many ways
1 lowest fuel consumption
2 lowest oil consumption
3 most horsepower and torque
+swemt Proof?
are u serious? yes rotax is the best engine in a snowmachine ......by far, you going to try and prove to us why its not, let me guess u own a artic cat , ya that's reliable....lol fuck off
E-tecs blow up easly do not buy!!!!
so buy a polarisk
Raphael Bernier or an arctic cat
Summit 800 e tec
BlackDragon im not the only one.
BlackDragon if you own a polarisk dragon, ill pray for you an your bank acount
Thats 10 years old. Delete it please.. :-)
2-cycle engines should be phased out. I know they have more hp per lb but they are nasty, harder on the environment, and don't get the fuel economy of a 4 cycle. With forced induction and build quality a 4cycle and outperform a 2 stroke and be cleaner and more reliable.
No, just no. Nothing comes close to the feel of a 2 stroke.
please do some research. you are comparing old tech two stroke to latest tech four stroke. apples for apples and the discussion is much more even
no they get BETTER fuel economy dummy,,research shit before spouting off.
That was pathetically self praising,,
Bought a sled yesterday with those black things on the heads and didn’t know what they were . Now i know, RAVE is cool
