Honestly thanks to you Grimm and Christopher, this was one of the first winters in Northeastern America in 12 years that I thoroughly enjoyed! I made it cozy, had plenty of candles and string lights and your enthusiasm helped me see the beauty! I actually miss the dark! (Our days are growing longer now). So THANK YOU. Whenever I watch your videos, I think “let’s check in on Svalbard!” … I am from Australia and love watching people who live life differently, I watch channels from Alaska, Korea, Japan, Ghana, Russia, Italy, other parts of the US, the UK. Every day I check in on those different parts of the world and think wow, there’s so many ways to live!

3000-3500 ($300-350) for firewood for a whole year is impressive! We just started using a wood stove and to exclusively buy wood to heat the house would cost probably 10x that much for a year here in the US. Thanks for sharing your budget! Good to get on top of at the start of a new year.
As someone who lives in the United States (Bay Area) I can tell you the only time I was paid every week was when I was very young and worked in retail. I work in Education, and my husband is in the high tech industry and we only get paid once a month. You are doing a good job taking care of your spending!

How do you estimate your monthly income. Is it the same every month? Do you have steady clients who pay the same amount monthly.
I’m a fund development officer and have many clients. I have a hard time estimating how much I will bring in monthly.
Svalbard sounds great for those who are healthy, young and need no extra services. Suggestion on future episode: what do the old people do ? parents of special needs children? what about emergencies in health? what services does Svalbard not have ? thanks!!!

Not everyone in US gets paid weekly. It all depends on the job. I used to get paid monthly but changed it to bi-monthly. Happy New Year! Love your channel

I’d say the majority gets paid semi-monthly (24 payments a year) or bi-weekly (26 payments). Other options are pretty rare.
Yeah. Typically lower-paying service jobs that are paid wages by the hour are paid weekly or bi-weekly (such as working at a grocery store or a garage). Whereas, if you have a professional job where you are paid a fixed income or salary, you get your checks usually monthly or sometimes semi-monthly (the government often pays bi-monthly).
@@matthewluck9077 and it is not true. My husband is a police officer and he is on bi-weekly direct deposits. I work in IT and my current company direct deposits money semi-monthly, all my previous companies paid bi-weekly. His previous departments always paid bi-weekly. When he was in military they paid bi-weekly too.
Pretty sure that lower-paying jobs are the same OR on WK schedule.
My employers get paid monthly. I have always been paid weekly. But now I get paid bi weekly.

Congrats on 500K! Knowing where your money flows out is a great step in learning how to save. I retired from a US University and was paid once a month. It was suggested that I take off the top a percentage into a savings/retirement account (and if needed I could borrow against myself but never did). It was the best advice for me rather than waiting till the end of the month to see what I had left. I was forced to learn how to budget during the month and while I lived frugally, I did everything I wanted learning how not to waste. As life changes, you will learn to change and flow with your needs. Blessings to you, Christoffer and Grim. I knew nothing about Svaldbard before finding your channel. 💖💖💖

This was very interesting. I'd love to hear a little more about how you determined those expenses where you each pay very different amounts, such as for food. This is such a great idea, and more people honestly need to do this. Everywhere around the world things are increasing wildly and budgeting is so important. Here is Canada we also have to wait on the weather to figure out our heating costs. We have had a very mild winter and hardly any snow (which is weird) but we have saved a bit on our heating.
Buffer account is a "contingency fund" for like if a pipe bursts but also if you know you need to re-roof in 4 years.
As an English person I’ve always had a Buffer! When I was employed it was so that I could always walk away from a job that I didn’t enjoy. It was my comfort blanket effectively. 😉

The skies are so amazing….I would be out there watching for as long as I could take the cold! Congrats on 500k+. We budget in a similar way, and when we have extra in a budgeted account, like electricity because of mild weather, we just let it ride, because we know it will eventually be needed.

Having a separate hoard vs savings is such a good idea. I have hoped that my bills account would grow beyond what I spend as a cushion for car upkeep and last min expenses but it hasn’t because I keep dipping. I think I’ll add car maintenance and vacation accounts this year.
Budgeting is absolutely the only way to live if a person / couple want to have a good life. Having savings and a buffer for unexpected expenses makes life bearable and easily managed when they happen. Quite a contrast from seeing you dressed warmly for the winter weather in Svalbard and the shot you showed of you in a red bikini in a swimming pool. I hope 2023 treats you and your family very well. I first read The Year Long Day some ten years ago and always thought about living on Svalbard for a year the way Ivar Ruud did! I would love a video discussing how much that would cost and how to go about that as an american!

Always cool to see how others do their budgeting! Top tip regarding your electricity....Rather than 'waiting and seeing' what the cost will be depending on the weather, just budget for the maximum amount it would usually be during the coldest period and set it there. Then, at the end of the winter, if you haven't had to use it because its been warmer and you have lots left over, then voila! That can go straight into your savings budget, or extra spending etc. It eliminates the guessing and/or stress of not knowing, and turns into a nice little unexpected pot of cash if not needed! Its what we do here in Scotland since the weather is so unpredictable and works well!

I actually love the idea of a monthly paycheck!! It’s most bi-weekly in America. Well entry level/lower paying hourly jobs are sometimes weekly, but everything else is bi-weekly. Monthly pay periods makes so much sense.

Not sure if anyone commented this, but paydays differ widely in the US. Depending on the employer, pay is made either daily..for day laborers..., weekly, every other week or monthly.
Love your home, the way you see things, the way you enjoy life, the way you behave, just everything. I feel so happy everytime I saw your vids, Cecilia so thank you a lot.
Wish I was there too cause I LOVE snow!! I like cold more than warmth to be honest, I live in Europe and do not like the weather here. But my husband does not speak other languages and finds ourself to old (he's 68, I'm 64) to move. Our son is 29 and lives with us cause he is seriously chronically ill (like me, has a muscle and soft tissue disease and also like me, other illnesses!). He can not go out to work so we have to make it with one real income (my husband's pension, also paid monthly), and my son gets a kind of disability benefit (= replacement income) whish is to low to go and live by himself (plus, he can not live by himself, needs a lot of help with about everything, and that's because of his illness!).
So moving is no option, sadly enough. Otherwise I would love to live in Canada (somewhere in a village near a lake) or where you live but closer to the shops (non of us can drive a car because of our illness and my husband never learned it + it's to expensive to mentain a car in our case. Maybe in a next live (I hope) ;-)

I have always kept a budget since I was married many years ago. I keep mine in a paper budget tablet, it’s just what I’m use to. I like it because I know what I have to pay and what money is left for me to do additional savings or splurge on something I want. I am paid monthly so it’s important to have a budget and stick to it. It’s always worked for me, I recommend doing a budget so as not to lose being in charge of your money.
