      You could look for another wall or house to take a picture off. Your original test scene gives a more real world test scenario. It's one thing that sets you apart form other lens reviewers :)

      I'd say the new test is too effective xD. (Details shows up well).
      Making (in my opinion), this lens feel too soft and too much fringing in the corners for my taste (even though I know that it is alot better lens in comparison to the ones I have) hahaha.

    i've been using this lens and d750 for property interior shot for half a year now. this lens' surprisingly usable images at f1.4 plus d750's awesome low light performance, the combo is a bloody killer for handheld interior photography.

    I owned this lens for 3 years. Loved it! I sold it and my 12-24 art and bought the 14-24 Sigma art for Sony because of what I do now. Lots of weight shed and I can use filters now. Still, for indoor. This lens is killer! Don’t hesitate if you can get a deal on it.

    I pre-ordered this lens before it reaches the store. I love it so much! It works very well with Lightroom 6.3 to remove distortion and vignetting. It's flaring resistance performance is also impressive. The only 2 things I dislike about it is the bulb front element and super heavy weight.

      +Aaron Yang Compared to Sigma ART lenses a Canon 70-200mm f4.0 feels handy and lightweight ;-) But nevertheless I like the build and image quality very much. I have just tested the Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART, its a lovely lens too.

      You can't go wrong with ART lenses. The 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm f/1.4, the 24-35mm f/2, and the 18-35mm f/1.8 are all superb.

    Hello dear! Very nice review! I want to buy a lens for my Canon 250D . I will use it more indoor video recording but also for photography. Do you suggest this or sigma 18-35 f 1.8 ? This model is cheaper than 18-35 1.8 here I live. But the quality is more important! As my camera is not full frame which is best for me? Sincerely.

    At 2:45 the lack of filter thread and the use of polarize filters is referred. However at 20mm the effect of polarize filter when shooting the sky and clouds isn't uniform. In the case of shooting foliage or reflections the polarized effect is uniform and good.

Don't take this a negative comment, but I'm not diggin the new "wall replacement". it just doesn't do it for me. +Nathan Marcotte Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately there's just nothing suitable nearby. There are a serious of factors, like having a public building, which is attractive, with windows in the right place, and tonnes of space in front of it for testing telephoto lenses...unfortunately, there's just nothing around. The test chart has its advantages, anyway :-)

    Hi Christopher! I have a question for you. I have 2 choices to get Sigma lens for my Nikon aps-c to use in wedding, wide angle images:
    1) only Sigma 20mm f1.4 Art lens or
    2) Sigma 24mm f1.4 Art lens and plus Samyang 12mm f/2.8 lens.
    I want to get nice images with good background, contrast, at least central sharpening on wedding day or wide angle territory photos.
    Which one do you prefer to me?
    Thanks.

  • @luke.v.

    I'm not sure whether I should buy the Canon 18-135mm stm or the Canon 55-250mm stm. The 18-135 is a more appealing all-in-one range but the 55-250 reaches further. I'm also not sure if 55mm is a wide enough minimum focal length (especially on APS-C). The 18-135 is only just affordable for me whereas the other is definitely affordable. I use the Canon 700D and this purchase will be my first upgrade from my 18-55mm kit lens. What do you recommend?

    • @timppatimo6287
      @timppatimo6287 9 років тому +1

      55 mm is not only not wide enough on Aps-c sensor; it's not wide at all. That would be telephoto lens all the way. Go for 35 mm minimum, even though 55-250 STM is a cool inexpensive glass.

      +Dani Timo Thanks for the advice

    • @Zwiesel66
      @Zwiesel66 9 років тому

      +Luke .V. I personally would buy a prime (24mm/35mm if you use an APS-C) with a fast aperture e.g. f1.4 and/or a 70-200mm f2.8 (or f4.0) IS - e.g. Tamron or Canon. But it always depends on your preferred way to take photos - so any suggestion can be completely wrong. I own the 18-135mm Canon, it is a nice lens, but IMHO it makes no sense to buy it, if you already own the 18-55mm Canon.

    • @xFedeXiT
      @xFedeXiT 8 років тому

      I have your same camera, and I am selling my 18-135. I don't really like it. Looking for a 17-50 sigma 2.8 for an upgrade. I also have a 55-250 IS, and a 50 1.8 II
      I would also like a Wideangle but I'm still working on the 17/50 at the moment.

    does it have weather sealing (Dust and Splash Resistant Structure" as Sigma calls it in their other lenses? It doesn't say so on the official website, so that should be confirmation enough. You usually mention it in your videos, but not in this one. Can such an expensive not be sealed? 😭 Why are there no comments about such an important feature?? I have found other websites which confirm it's not weather sealed.

    Hi Chris. Love your videos. Ive just moved to Sony A7III for wildlife and landscape photography from Canon. I used to use a Sigma 10-20mm on my old Canon 7dmk2 and liked that lens a lot. Although it had its flaws I found it became my go to landscape lens. Ive got a Sony 28-70 kit lens but want something like my old 10-20mm. A friend of mine has bought the lens in your video and his pictures are simply amazing with it. Trying to get my head around the wideness equivalent to the 10-20mm. I use an MC-11 with my Sigma 150-600mm and works like a dream so wildlife is covered. For landscapes had considered Canon wide angle lenses but not much experience with them. What would you recommend? Would 28mm be ok for merging panoramic shots? The 10-20mm used to cut out a lot of post processing work.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 років тому +1

      The full-frame equivalent of an APS-C 10-20mm lens would be 16-30mm, so something in that area would be the direct equivalent. The 28mm might be good for you for panoramas - try it out and see

      @@christopherfrost Thanks for the advice. I think I will get the 20/1.4. At full frame, I shoot concerts, landscape and astro at 20mm and turn on APSC mode, I get to shoot 30mm for street photography and indoors. Sounds like a good idea! :)

      @H4KUN4M3N03D3L 9 років тому

      +Christopher Frost Photography Haha, neat! I used to own one for short time. Just for shits and giggles. In practice 1100 mm is an unusable long focal length. Fun for portrait though, having someone stand 50 meters away.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 років тому

      +Tim Broers I was literally just thinking to myself how to get some portrait test shots with my wife. With a good tripod I've found the lens surprisingly usable...and actually not too soft!

    • @H4KUN4M3N03D3L
      @H4KUN4M3N03D3L 9 років тому

      +Christopher Frost Photography Unusable for me personally! I was using it on APS-C back then, and couldn't find a use for it besides it being fun to have tried once. As for ergonomics, it takes some tricks to make it work, such a mirror lock-up. And yes, image quality, surprisingly, isn't all that bad really. As long as you don't crop. The most satisfying thing about it was just holding the thing. Combined with extending the built-in lens hood, it felt like holding a soviet shotgun.

    CA is more prevalent on APS-C sensors?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 років тому

      +Mr M Yup - the higher the pixel density, the more CA tends to rear its ugly head.

    • @twagn
      @twagn 9 років тому

      +Christopher Frost Photography- Do full frame lenses on a APS-C sensor camera create this problem? Would APS-C specific lenses (Canon EF-S) be a better choice for APS-C

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 років тому

      +Mr M Every lens is different so you'll have to watch my reviews I'm afraid. It's to do with pixel density, how tiny the pixels are in a camera's sensor. You'd have the same problem with a 50mp full-frame sensor

    • @twagn
      @twagn 9 років тому

      +Christopher Frost Photography Not afraid of watching your videos. Pretty much watched most of them. Is there a particular video that would explain this better?I just never heard of this before

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 років тому

      +Mr M It's quite simple really. The tinier the pixels on your camera's sensor, the more they show up a lens's softness and chromatic aberration. So on an APS-C camera, where all the pixels are extra tiny and bunched up, the sensor shows a lens's flaws a lot more. You might have noticed this already in my tests :-)

    Hi Chris, Thanks for this nice review of new Sigma lens. Compared it to 24mm Art what will be your thoughts? I owned 35mm art and 24mm art and now I think it is worth upgrading to 20mm Art because of 24mm softness? What do you recommend? I suppose there is no reason to buy 24 art anymore unless you want to use filters. Thanks!

    I have a question about that new test chart ...
    I'm just wondering how do you take identical images of the same chart using different focal lengths ? I mean when you switched between the 135mm and 20mm the picture looked exactly the same, do you really just move away and closer to the picture ? if so.. how come we don't see any distortion ?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 років тому +1

      +Khaled Zidan I do indeed move forward and back. When it comes to distortion, different lenses have different levels of distortion. If you look at the shape of the test chart in the shots for the 20mm lens you can actually see the barrel distortion, especially in the resolution circles in the corners

    Hi Christopher. A big hello to you from a fellow former English teacher in South Korea! :) Your videos are extremely helpful so many thanks there. I'm looking to upgrade my canon 28mm f1.8 prime on my 600d. Out of the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 or Sigma 20mm f1.4, what would be your preference for a crop-sensor camera? I'm looking to upgrade primarily for video. Thank you in advance, Ruben

      Now I have the results. Not only with the Canon 6D, but also with the Sony A 7 II with Sigma adapter MC-11 in between. How cool is that? :-)

      Tamron has the versatility advantage as Christopher mentioned, Sigma on the other hand has the light transmission advantage. Get the Sigma if you shoot events indoors or in low light, otherwise get the Tamron.

      I'd go for the 20mm since you can crop it down to a 20mm. But that's just me, as always it depends on what you're shooting. I'm doing concert photography, so a wider angle is perfect for crowd shots.

  • @monkehp

    I'm dying to know Chris... the 24mm f1.4 was definitely less sharp than the 35mm. How does this 20mm compare to the 35mm? it's this 20 or the 35 for me... thank you!

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 років тому +1

      +José Cruz They're virtually the same sharpness, really, although the 35mm lens might have a tiny advantage in its corners between f/2.8 and f/4 (maybe). Frankly, you should make your decision based on what focal length you need

    • @monkehp

      +Christopher Frost Photography Unbelievable, how did they do that with a 20mm lens... Wow. I'm a fan of more 'unconventional' non-fisheye focal lengths... this seems like a very unique professional-level lens. Thanks for keeping the reviews going, this one is tempting...

    I'd like to see an old test area like your old videos because a chart up close isn't representative of real world conditions. A lot of lenses up close show field curvature. I'd rather see a shot at infinity because that's how most people use landscaping lenses.
