I get mesmerized by her every time I see and hear Julie's nightingale voice. At the same time I wish I could wring the neck of the surgeon who deprived her of the talented instrument in her throat. The malpractice was a terrible loss for all of us. How could she have been reconciled with him?
Julie Andrews could sing circles around the so called "talent" of these times! What joy she has brought into our lives. God bless her. Thank you for sharing.
Wow. I have always known and loved Julie, from the first time I watched Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music as a child. Only a few months ago when I re-watched the Sound of Music did I realise how completely extraordinary she is. Her voice and acting are one of a kind, and she seems to be a truly kind, fun and generally lovely person. She is also so naturally beautiful, to this day. Julie is honestly my idol, and I admire all of her work, from the superb things she did as a young girl, like the recording above, to the modern acting pieces still coming out today. Julie, I idolise you and can only thank you.
@xander7ful In her memoir she said that her vocal teacher hoped that she would go into opera as she did. But J. said she didn´t find her voice strong enough for it. Who knows.
Julie herself has talked about having had an adult larynx when an young girl. Her teacher taught her to sing this way, trilling every 'r', very old fashioned, but you can understand every word, a hallmark of her singing from then on. Deana Durbin also sang this way. What a great find this recording is. Julie's destiny, to sing show music, took her away from old fashioned ways, and the rest is history. A British songbird for the ages. To me, her Christmas music is her best, arranged by Previn.
Brilliant star with a magnificent voice as clear as a bell! Too bad they dressed her like an 8 year old little girl when she was 12/13! Thanks for sharing~
@@joyk555 I don't think so - I imagine for something like a Royal Variety Performance a little money could have been found! I think it's two factors: firstly, the novelty of a child star looks even more novel if she looks even younger - perhaps not admirable, but that's showbiz; and secondly, I think girls _were_ dressed younger in those days. And she _wasn't_ very busty in her early teens, not like (some of) today's girls of similar ages - see the 3-86 video, so _could_ be dressed younger.
@@G6JPG I think you are right about trying to make her look as young as possible. She was a child star in England at that time. No one could know her career would last life long and not just vanish when she became a teen, as so many do. It's pretty common in show business, even now.
Julie definitely knew the value of practice, unlike other notable singers in the 60s we won't mention here. I remember seeing here on a talk show discussing this exact topic. She was saying that for her, she had to practice to make her performance perfect and it wasn't always easy. For her, there were no short cuts. So, while other singers may not practice and can still turn in reasonable performance, she said she just couldn't work this way. For her, practice did make it perfect.
There are a _few_ multitalented around now - I recently came across Katice Illenyi, who plays the theremin and violin to world class, sings reasonably, and tap-dances. But certainly, there were a lot more good dancers a few decades ago.
@PatriceFitz Oh no no no...! Julie sung all the songs in The Sound of Music by herself! Marnie Nixon never sung for her. She did, however, sung for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. You must be confusing between the two :)
@alisonsdragonfly I seem to recall that in the film "My Fair Lady" Audrey Hepburn's singing was by Marnie Nixon, who too sang for Natalie Wood in "West Side Story."
I am just amazed at the talent she showed at such a young age. I was in love with her and her voice in Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, My Darling Lilly, Arthur,Arthur, etc. etc.
Blown away by Julie Andrews! I wish I can see her onstage performing! Thank God for video posts! Her movies am watching on Anazon, Netflix ! I believe if you research you will find that the singer who dubbed Natalie Wood, Audrey Hepburn, etc. Was the lovely and talented Marnie Nixon who was on screen as one of the nuns in the Sound of Music. Julie was by far too great a star to do dubbing!
As you rightly state,Marni dubbed many peoples voices.Very sadly, till the day she died(July 24, 2016) she never received royalties for her dubbing,it went to the person being dubbed.

From a screen test she was given, when aged just 12, by MGM. I think they were looking for another Deanna Durbin type. Apparently the test went badly and she was dismissed as not photogenic enough. The reputation hung around her for years, even when she was a star on Broadway.
She still sang in one part of Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. The title of the song was Your Crowning Glory, and it's a great one. I read in IMDb that she did great in the first recording of that song, and some of the crew even went to tears after hearing her sing; it was her first public singing after she had her operation.
@PatriceFitz in the movie my fair lady correct i do belive though there is only one song julie andrews did sing in the movie, but marnie nixon did sing or was dubbed over audrey vocals in the film... my fair lady broadway julie did all the singing of course.
This is the first I've heard - are you sure? I thought the movie was entirely (the singing parts, I mean) Marni, with Audrey doing the speaking parts, and I think one or two lines into or out of one of the songs. I've never heard any mention of Julie singing in - or in fact having anything to do with - the film.
What's really amazing is that at at 15, she already sounds like the Julie Andrews that sang in My Fair Lady. She didn't sound like that in her recording of the Polonaise that she made at 12, even though that does sound quite good.
I have always been in awe of the singing talent of Julie Andrews and always will--even after the tragic malpractice with her throat some fifteen years ago. I am glad to hear her nightingale voice in the form like this clip. At the same time, however, I am sad to realize that throat surgery was a great loss for all of us who love Julie Andrews. Why did she have to get victimized by a disqualified surgeon? The photos in which she looked innocent in her youth are treasures as well.
Actually, the operation was a happy misfortune. If she was loved before, her comeback has made her adored. Her reduced voice is nonetheless a beautiful speaking voice, which audiences are most glad to hear. The 50th anniversary of South of Music made her the object of adulation. Much more heart felt than if her voice had simply faded away as other musical stars have,
"Madame (her teacher Lilian Stiles-Allen) hoped very much that I would go into opera, but I always sensed that it was too big a stretch for me." Julie wrote that in her memoir "Home" published in 2007.
The most wonderful voice I have ever heard for such a young girl, that has carried on all through the years. It is such a pity that her voice has been wrecked as I am sure she has still such a lot to offer. A very gracious lady and a superb actress. My wish in life is to meet her.
Amazing singer then and now! And absolutely gorgeous person then and now!! She is the epitome of true singing talent and will always be one of my biggest inspirations!
This is amazing !!such a range of soprano voice!! ..a real coloratura at such a young age and what a beautiful piece of music ..... Strauss ! Julie Andrews is absolutely inspirational . She influenced our lives for the better in a huge way . Love her !!
I honestly have trouble believing that she's 15 here. Her voice just...didn't change too much! It was already so mature by the time she reached this age!
Julie has been rather ambivalent about her early recordings, not to mention self-deprecating (needlessly I feel). “But Strauss? Oh, my. When I was very, very young and in vaudeville I would belt out those numbers and do all the coverage lyrically. If you want to go online and have one hoot of a laugh, I think my doing ‘The Blue Danube’ at age 15 is there. It’s just out of the stratosphere, and I’m surprised these days that I ever managed it.” I think she is embarrassed by the clunky lyrics she had to sing (her bastardized arias as she calls them). Well, not everyone was an Alan Jay Lerner and it IS a historic recording by a nascent superstar! ☺ Other soprano singers often obscure their lyrics with their vocal pyrotechnics. Julie's diction was always clear and was to become her trademark (so even awkward lyrics show up). This is what she was singing as I hear it [the recording is from the "Educating Archie" radio series, broadcast 30th Oct 1950]. Danube divine, my heart's at your shrine So full of romance, the world you entrance From brook to the shore, you flow as of yore While singing your song, sweet and strong Wondrous river all adore 'Tween the mountains high, snow-capped in the sky How you hurry, how you scurry Till you reach the plain, set with golden grain Then you tarry, tarry, on your way From town and hamlet green, serious voices sing your praise Loyal sons all proudly gaze, at their beautiful Danube winding free Hallowed mysterious stream, flowing through the years Memories of days you bring, filled with joys and tears The beautiful Danube winding free O beautiful river I worship you, Danube blue, Danube blue Go on forever, so staunch and true While singing your song, sweet and strong, wondrous river
Thank you Chris! This is a wonderful input and comment. I always laugh with tenderness when Julie talks about "bastardized arias" . She never gives credit to herself and her unique wonderful voice. Maybe the lyrics were not the best ones, but Gosh, her voice made it up for everything else! She's SUPERB!
Thanks for the lyrics - and the precise date. (You say "broadcast" on that date [which I'm sure you're right about], but I suspect it was live too, i. e. actually _happened_ on that date.)
@@G6JPG - No. In her first biography Home she writes about this time on the Educating Archie show: "I was thrilled to have the opportunity to sing with a big orchestra on a regular basis. Though not broadcast live, the programme was recorded in front of a live audience, and I was able to sit in on many of the read-throughs and the show itself." "As we only recorded one day a week and I was not in every episode, I was able to continue touring with Mum from time to time."
From the surface noise at 0:07 to 0:09: this recording was on a 78! (I guess that was still the default in 1950/1951 [anyone know which year it was?]. But it makes you think!) [From reading the comments - it was 1950-10-30.]
It says in the title, she's 15 here. What an amazing set of pipes and such a huge tragedy that botched vocal cord surgery took it away. But I still hear you, Julie, thanks to recordings!
Omg this is amazing i wich i could sing as good as that im a singer im 16 going on 17 and i work in theater know and if i had her voice thatwould be amazing lol xx
My jaw just dropped. I knew she was a great singer, but that last note...I never heard her or anyone else sing this high before... and so flawlessly.
Listen to her at 12 to the King; her top note is audible over full orchestra and massed chorus.
She is so pretty, so natural!
Julie Andrews should not have to age. Her talent and beauty should give her a pass from Mother Nature.
She does not age, have you seen her?
I wonder how it feels to have such beautiful music flowing out of my throat

@@G6JPG - No. In her first biography Home she writes about this time on the Educating Archie show:
"I was thrilled to have the opportunity to sing with a big orchestra on a regular basis. Though not broadcast live, the programme was recorded in front of a live audience, and I was able to sit in on many of the read-throughs and the show itself."
"As we only recorded one day a week and I was not in every episode, I was able to continue touring with Mum from time to time."
@@chrisnorton4382 Thanks for that info.
From the surface noise at 0:07 to 0:09: this recording was on a 78! (I guess that was still the default in 1950/1951 [anyone know which year it was?]. But it makes you think!)
[From reading the comments - it was 1950-10-30.]
STUNNING. at first i thought it was an adult singing ._.
SHE HAD SUCH A TALENT SINCE SHE WAS A CHILD OMG
It says in the title, she's 15 here. What an amazing set of pipes and such a huge tragedy that botched vocal cord surgery took it away. But I still hear you, Julie, thanks to recordings!
Oh Good!! I hope it works!!
Awwww I love the picture at 0:33, I wish I could get it in hd
If you look just above her head in the mirror, you might be able to make out the name of the agency who have the picture. (I can only see "phot".)
What a great voice she has.
I like the vid.. you did a great job :-)
Thanks for sharing so her fans can enjoy it.
