Cliff Burton was something otherworldly, his magic on bass was just impossible to qualify. R.I.P. CLIFF BURTON
Impossible to qualify? What the hell are you even saying
I think he was trying to say quantify. 🤷🏻♂️
He was just MAGIC!
Your comment tries too hard
Fuck these guys, I'm a bass player and I get you. Truth, my brother.
8 minutes, No words.
Yet a story was told somehow.
This is why metal is the closest to classical music.
Beethoven's 5th symphony has no words. Yet 220 years later it is still instantly recognisable.
Metal is classical music with guitars. You can't be metal without the complexity.
Nah, they where just jaming back than hehe
@@ST1973 Heh, to a degree maybe, but no - there's classical musical theory running through this, and a lot of the rest of their work at this time - this is what Cliff brought to the band. His knowledge elevated these works into what could be considered a form of modern classical music. Which was why he was such a loss to the band. He did manage to impart of lot of that musical theory to the others though, and they worked through it like champs and were able to continue.
I've listened to almost all of the Metallica songs on classic covers (violins, piano, etc) and it's remarkable how it still sounds cool and masterclass.
@@oldb12 Exactly my friend - which proves the point - the S&M album they did with film score composer Michael Kamen also proved how "classical" in nature these works are .
Cliff had the most beautiful, heavy, crunchy, badass bass sound ever. Definitely in his own dimension. Sometimes I wonder how their music would be if he was still alive. RIP Cliff.
🤘
Have been playing guitar my whole life and love seeing younger people going down the Metallica rabbit hole. Rock on brother!🌀
😂
..yea, love welling up for 8 mins while a pubeless numpty essentially shits on your stack by pretending it's brand new on their ears.
Come on bro, these little neeks know exactly what they're doin.
Fuck yes. It makes me happy when people actually feel the breakdown during Orion and understand exactly why I still slobber and drool over it 28 years after finding it
@@notruefaceall three of you guys. Please please do not let this music die. I beg you to please pass this on. Im 15 years old and im in awe of metallicas music. We need to remember who we are.are you guys with me?
Yeah we lived it and the thing keeps going. It's awesome.
I'm nearly 67 and Metallica have been my favourites for as long as I can remember. This song just proves you don't always need lyrics to make awesome tracks
Cliff made them sound really different. I wonder, what would happen if he'd survive...😢
Right on. I'm 55 and have been listening to them since I was 16. Great band.
This is the kind of song that you just put on some headphones, lay back in a chair, close your eyes and let it take you for a ride
Orion is still great after hearing it a thousand times!
The basist Cliff Burton is behind this song. He was the musical brains of the early Metallica, and super virtuous on bass guitar. He died just so young in bus accident during their tour. Such a tragedy.
I really recommend to watch his bass solo from their first album, Anasthesia (Pulling teeth). And preferably the live version from Chicago 1983, to see him in action. He turned the bass into solo instrument in a totally new way, and is still concidered on of the bass legends.
The quality of that live film is very low in todays standards, but still you can see his talents. Really recommend to watch for the experience.
And btw, thanks for these reactions, really pleasure to watch. Keep on the Metallica journey!
100% 🤘🤘
The live video of them in northern California when Cliff does the solo and then they break into "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is awesome as well. 🙂
This and Damage Inc. are peak Cliff Burton. He was taken way to early. We miss you Cliff.
Oh heck yes, damage inc, I'm going there next, totally forgot about that song 🤘
Too soon, my brother..... Too soon....
At 9:35 that is Cliff Burton's solo on bass guitar. I LOVE "Orion"! As James Hetfield said, "That was Cliff's 'baby'."
Cliff Burton (bass) was the main feature in this song. There has never been a bassist that can relate to his caliper of play. RIP Cliff
While I somewhat agree I have to remind you Les Claypool exist
So I straight get goosebumps everytime I listen to this song, been listening since I was 13, I'm now 49 and I nearly cried when you lit that joint 🥲🤘🤘
Same bro, same... I got a nice "J" next to me, enjoying this reaction Video... Metalhead since I discovered Metallica in the early 90'... I was like 10 years old... 30 years later I still listen to trash metal such as Pantera, Megadeth and Metallica.
I love you all ❤️
I love it when people discover Metallica. I'd give almost anything to go back and be able to experience all their albums for the first time. I gave my daughter her middle name after this song. They were only like 22 years old when they wrote this masterpiece. It's by far my favorite song of theirs. Cheers bro. Enjoy the ride and take it all in. Welcome to the Metallica family. 🤘🏻
Just think, they were 22 and 23 years old when this masterpiece was written. Mind blowing!!
I’m so excited to watch this guy’s Metallica journey.
I’ve never seen anybody start from the beginning and go in chronological order. Would love to see him start with the first album and go through. I know he’s shootings for views being a smaller channel…but man that would help him explode IMO
Orion is definitely a must for any new listener of Metallica 😊 R.I.P. Cliff Burton helped make this song possible this is one of many instrumental pieces Metallica has produced.
Metallica was the main reason I was walking around town with a pair of headphones on and a blissed out expression in the late 90’s.
the into at the start when you said “oh those heavy guitars man” was the bass. Same with 3:26, and 9:36! Cliff burton was absolutely amazing and my all time favourite bass player as a bass player myself. 🤘🤘
The intro is not heavy guitar. It’s all bass from the legend himself
CLIFF BURTON
Listen to "Call of Ktulu"😉💯⚔️
It was me that recommended it. The entire album is stellar. Not all Metallica does is fabulous, but the majority of their songs are.
If you're looking for something different, try the Maori band, Alien Weaponry, song Kai Tangata. It's not in English, but i think you'll get out of your chair over it.
I've been listening to rock and metal for 30+ years like a lot of people you'll encounter here. We can keep you busy listening to new tunes for a decade and still not be close to done.
Other great bands to start with: AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Dio, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, Megadeth are all sure to be the perfect introduction to metal.
No one writes music like this anymore. One of the most powerful instrumentals ever written.
One thing I really love, is other people reacting to my personal favourite band. Negative or not, I still love that they at least gave it a try.
Once you started reacting to Metallica, everyone who has a you tube channel that listens to Metallica are getting your videos in their feeds, that's how I found your video it was in my feed a few days ago. So thank Metallica for boosting your channel views! You Tube at work for you! Cheers bro!
Your reaction is priceless, mostly because it is really the same most of us had the first time and, in all honesty, every additional time we hear their music. Love it!
Absolutely this. Whenever I see someone react to this song, and I see that look of bafflement settle over their face as the bass solo kicks in, I’m IMMEDIATELY taken back to my first listen, which was on one of those big ‘ghetto blaster’ dual-cassette boomboxes in this little shed that my mate Jeff eventually insulated, installed a couch and a loft bed within along with a TV and VCR, and more or less moved into at 15 or 16. He and I and 2 or 3 mutual friends used to play guitar, get drunk, and get high in there for whole weekends at a stretch.
The point is, though, I remember well clearly hearing that bass solo, turning my head very slightly to the side, and asked, “Who just played that solo?”
“That was Cliff.”
“What, you mean that overdubbed, harmonised lead solo?”
“That’s the one.”
“Can a bass guitar do that?”
“Clearly; we just heard one do it.”
“Fucking hell. Can we run the tape back?”
Etc.
Over the years, I’ve learnt that a surprising number of people can relate to this story.
But anyway, the
Fun fact, they need 8min of fill time, studio manager said album needed 8 min of more content, and in the studio, Cliff Burton picked up his base and just started playing, the I tro you heard was Cliff on bass with so much distortion, well James heard him, felt the vibe, and just started riffing, Lars and Kirk joined in later, and in a matter of an hour they picked what they liked, and threw it all together, and it became the masterpiece it is today, song was literally made in an hour, and it was just them, having a jam session.
Mate, fuck yeah. You’re hitting some absolute gems.
The whole album is 🔥
Cliff could solo like a lead guitar with a bass. The guy was unreal! That’s why there’s so much pain on Justice. They also treated Newstead horribly. I would have left too!
If you liked this song you would also like Metallica's 'To live is to die' from their "And Justice for All album".
As for something new, you can't go wrong with Led Zeppelin "When the Levey Breaks" or "Ramble On".
Led Zeppelin's Achilles Last Stand should be in the discussion.
@@colonelquack I'll have to listen to that one. I've never heard it before.
@@johncassles7481 Physical Graffiti is my favorite. The B-side, especially. If you're into long instrumentals, Achilles Last Stand will be up your alley.
@@colonelquack I'll look all those up, thanks.
I don't know where this masterpiece begins or ends,... All I know is I'm grateful that I captured at least these brilliant 8 minutes..😢
Metallica had a mysterious musician with classical music influences, it was he who introduced them to that type of harmonies. He was a very virtuoso musician, we owe him that bass intro with effects pedals simulating a synthesizer. Tragically he died on the tour to promote that album. R.I.P. Cliff Burton 😔
One of Metals horrific news of loss. Rip Cliff Burton 🎸💔 One bad ass bassist in history!! Taken too young I believe 24 yrs old! I remember I was shook! I've had the honor of watching Cliff play, with his massive hands and no pick!! A Beast on the bass! Cliff was chill, I remember he was in jeans n a t-shirt just Slayin that bass!! 🤌 He'll be forever missed & never forgotten. Rest in Rock Cliff ♥️🤘🤘🎸💥
I can barely play parts of this on my bass and it gives me shivers it's so amazing
I been listening to metal for 40 years and id say Metallica is definitely a top 10 for me. I havent listened to much of what they have done past the black album. Everything prior to that is simply pure gold.
I'm a fan of many many metal bands and every Metallica album. That being said the 80s Metallica is the best I've ever heard. Nothing beats it.
Creeping death seattle 89 or Moscow 91 would be a good one to react too
This number is so uniquely beautiful. From one feeling to another.😍🥰🥰😍🤗
YESSSS ORION MADE HIM PULL OUT THE JOINTTTT 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻😂 awesome!
It made me do the same mate 😂❤
It made me do the same mate 😂❤
Orion will always be my favourite metalica song I think it’s the best ever written mostly cuz of cliffs writing it’s just a masterpiece
Pantera , Walk is another oldie banger with a message many can relate to.
I'm a fan of Metallica since 1991 and I'm so happy to see new fans "forming" all the time :)
The intro with Cliff Burtons bass is assume 🤘 R.I.P Cliff, the Bass Hero!
i never get bored of watching reactions to one of my favorite bands
at 2:10 the intro is cliff on bass... he had multible distortion pedals the intro sounds clanky yet gripping and i love that... also at 3:26 and at 9:38 cliff did these bass solos with even more distortion
lol, u hear me. I hope enjoy it. Im sitll hearin after 25 years, and i still loving it.
8:03 love this moment...
Lead bass man, it's something legendary. Cliff's fingers just flew across the fretboard, they had a mind of their own. I played some of it, it's really fun to play, but I could never figure out the final solo with the "devil's trill"
I'm loving your reactions m8. It's good to see younger generations getting into it. Reminds me of myself 40 years ago starting the metal journey. Once you're hooked you're a metalhead for life! Keep em coming. Smoke away!
It's not only "knowing to play" it's very much about the composition, it sounds gooddddd
“Disposable Heroes” will take you apart in the best possible way 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Fuck yes
Gotta listen to The Call of Ktulu now, another great instrumental by Metallica. My two favorite songs of theirs
This song hits every emotion for me. Truly a ride
Absolute masters of their craft.
The best metal instrumental EVER writen. PERIOD
Yes, that part at 9:36 that melted your brain was in fact a bass solo
Metallica's _Orion:_ The shortest eight-and-a-half minutes in heavy metal.
Written sometime around 1985 by a bunch of alcoholic twenty-nothings.
Fucking hell...
'85-'95 was the best time ever to be a metalhead.
This is perfect Thrash. Even Classical Composers have compared the layered composition of Thrash to classical music. I think in years to come, without the prejudices of the day, Thrash will be remembered fondly.
If your going to watch any.... ANY, of their live performances.... You need to see their live videos from Russia. The shear amount of people in that country attending their concert is astounding to say the least. This band has been a major part of my life for the better part of 40 years...... Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is a personal favorite that Hits home
It really depends on what time of metal you eventually lean towards. But if you dig the purest of these, the classic metal, this will definitely remain in your tops. This and Justice are way up there in mine.
To live is to die is another must masterpiece instrumental off of And Justice for all album! But they don't have a bad song through first 4 albums! ROCK ON
My son was named after this song. His name is spelled Oryon. Needless to say, he's in his late 20's
So, James is lead vocals and rythym guitar, the late Cliff Burton was the bassist, Kirk is lead guitar and Lars on the drums. There are a few songs where James and Kirk play together. Good stuff
So good to see a young man discovering the magic of Metalica´s early records. Goosbumps all the way with this songs.
That guitar over the melodic bass line is likr the guitars are crying and weeping . Its soo soulful. This is a masterpiece as the whole album is.
One of the best instrumentals ever.
Dude we like to watch your reactions on Metallica's songs. You should definitely make video on "For Whom The Bell Tolls". I swear you won't regret it🔥🔥🔥
Live Cliff Em All
I love seeing reactions to this song. It lets me relive the feeling of when I heard the song the first time.
Fun fact, Mollyboy, the Orion droning intro is just bass and drums - no guitars. Cliff Burton, the legend, RIP. So cool to watch you appreciate metal; and thrash metal, specifically. Thrash is metal influenced by Black Sabbath (the godfathers!) and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, plus punk rock.
There were songs that were proto-thrash in the late 70’s and early 80’s, but, arguably, the general consensus is that the first proper thrash album was Metallica’s ‘83 debut, Kill ‘Em All.
The aggression, intensity, and multiple movements (like in classical music) within thrash metal make it not only visceral and emotional, but intellectual and pensive as well. To watch you experience that and understand its complexity is cool, man. It hit me the first time i heard this stuff just like it hits you. Your love of music makes your channel a pleasure to watch. Keep it up, little bruv.
What are you hearing? You're hearing musical genius. You're hearing metal mastery!
3 first albums was by far their best work! RIP Cliff ..
"That cigarette looks really thin", I thought, then... enjoy those, and all the amazing music the world has to offer, and especially - enjoy every moment. Life is the greatest adventure
They’re roll ups, you roll them yourself
@@MollyBoyTV I know :) Been to lazy past few years, roll ups are the best (unless someone else rolled it) - you can really control the journey. Thumbs up
lol this is the song i think we should play if we have a rick and morty event where we have to play music to impress a more advanced race to survive. no words, just pure beauty🤘🏼
Jealous of you, enjoying these masterpieces for the first time
Been a life long fan 30 years
\m/💀\m/
Hi, I've just discovered your channel and I'm glad to see young people discovering Metallica. Long live your project from a Frenchman in Paris.
The intro is chords on Cliff's bass. RIP Cliff, you are sorely missed still to this day.
Very possibly my favorite song of life, in life? Of my life? You know wtf I mean, Brilliant!!!!! That one word is sufficient
I'm so happy a young man is getting such enjoyment from old music.
If you listen to any more of the ...And Justine For All songs, you need to listen to them with the bass. Back in '88, when Jason Newstead first joined the band after Cliff's passing, as part of Jason's "initiation", Lars told the mixer to turn the bass all the way down and the final product had no bass in the entire album. Not in vinyl or CD. When you hear the bass in Blackened compared to no bass, it's night and day.
It was Cliff Burton's energy that was put into recording Orion that ultimately gave you the urge to smoke that joint even though you said you had put it down for the time being. For all intents and purposes, you smoked a joint in the name of an absolute legend and didn't even realize it at the time... R.I.P CLIFF BURTON!
Glad to see your further along in kicking the smoking habit..
Great reaction...this song got played at our high school talent show the lead singer and guitar players 8 year old brother came in and played bass...and stole the show..he was absolutely amazing..I'll never forget it
That's how good of a bassist cliff Burton was , Metallica ( the whole band) relocated to San Francisco to keep cliff happy because that's where he lived and he didnt want to leave
Dunno how I found myself here but this was great - glad you recognise this as the masterpiece that it is. It took a few tokes for my mates to understand this too when I introduced it to them a long time ago, so don't blame you for that. Now you're broken in, you can listen to it anytime without enhancement. You also seem like a good lad, so will check out your other stuff. Great to see a younger generation get on board with this.
Theirs a song, on " and justice for all" much like this one, this is one of my favorites, and so is the one on and justice for all
Both are absolutely beautiful songs, it's called
Metallica - to live is to die
a favourite of mine
That whole album is gold. Top ten of all time for me. Love the reaction.
Great vid mate, Keep up the good work. Loved you in East 17, All the best from Australia.
Lol, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry
The channel is awesome, your vibe is off the chain, great content, instant laughs, instantly subscribed! Nice work, good sir!
Welcome aboard!
I made a mixed tape back in the day of just this song so it could just play over and over as I went to sleep as a teen. Yes I said “tape” and I’m showing my age!
Hail Cliff. I've been to the crash side several times. And of course the remembering stone. It's always impressive to see how he still being loved bij the fans
What a masterpiece thank you Cliff🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You should definetely listen to "To Live is To Die" man. That is one instrumental masterpiece of Metallica. Keep up the good work.
Magic
You should check out ' The Thing That Should Not Be ' live 1989 it's their heaviest song in my opinion
Great tune, great reaction! I remember when I was in high school (in the 90's) my Art Class took a trip to the Museum Of Fine Arts Houston, we were told ahead of time there would be a Walkman, mobile cassette tape player with headphones, that had a tape that curates the artwork. So I packed a lunch and a joint plus a Metal Instrumental tape I put together that of course included ORION. So when we got there I peeled off from the class, walked down the street, Burned Down, went back into the Museum, got my Walkman, put in my own tape of Metal Instrumentals and just strolled around, high, rocking out and LOVING all the amazing works of ART, including the ones I was listening to!
Another great song from a masterpiece album. The solo gives me goosebumps like the first solo in Master of Puppets... melodic and harmonious bliss. Thanks for another great reaction 😊👍
Still probably my favourite Metallica song. Ever.
FUCKIN BATTERY!!
It's really a metal orchestra. An amazingly beautiful trip.
Subbed to you. You seem genuine. Keep it up, my friend.
Thank you very much!
Loving your reactions, especially to Metallica, Pantera and Slayer. Feels like I'm listening to it for the first time again
