I enjoyed listening to that old man and Steve...I came here cause my water heater leaking from cold walter inlet in the top...Thank you guys for sharing. Now I am going to fix mine...
“I don’t know guy...not looking good for you”. These are classic lines that only Steve could pull off! I personally, would feel like an asshole antagonizing my customers but with Steve, it works and works well.
I have that same heater (installed 2016) and am currently dealing with the same problem. I used blue teflon tape and dope over the tape when I installed it. The nipple on the cold side just disintegrated. I think it’s a metallurgical defect.
Most likely nothing to do with the teflon tape or whether you use dope or not, but rather you are attaching a copper pipe to a galvanized nipple. These two dissimilar metals should NEVER be connected together. It is better to attached copper to a brass nipple like he is doing here in the video, but even better if you use a dielectric union between the nipple & the pipe. I just checked both my hot & cold water connections on my water heater and the connections are pristine like the day it was installed back in 2010. Yup, the plumber used a dielectric union. Check them out...well worth it!
I had a kidney stone when I was 15. I couldn't stop screaming because of the pain. When I was in the hospital, a nurse asked me to scream more quietly because it was disturbing patients in other rooms.
Steve need to do this on my storage tank leaking from the top on the hotside and the cold side unless the tank is not level and is running downhill. You mentioned you don't like doing this sort of thing. Its a 2011 John Wood Storage tank, 50 gal with brass fittings. Any advice?
"I don't know man she ain't looking good. She's a little crusty. She's a crusty one. I had a girlfriend who was a little crusty." Oh man that was to funny.
I just happen to open my cubard door not long ago & seen water spitting out of copper tubing must had been leaking for couple weeks replaced it with new one amazing the water heater is 28 years old still works fine.
I wouldn't use them because they probably aren't as good as the ones sold by plumbing supply houses. Take, for example, toilets that are sold in big box stores. You will typically find cheap steel bolts packaged with that toilet. The same toilet sold in a plumbing supply house will probably have brass bolts. That isn't always the case, I once bought a Mansfield Cascade tall toilet from a supply house and it came with the cheapest steel bolts they could possibly find.
Why don’t you ever use dielectric connections on or whatever the proper name is??????????? Your area doesn’t call for these connections too expensive????
If the nipples have “heat traps” (gaskets to prevent heat loss), you shouldn’t apply heat so that the gasket doesn’t melt. The nipple he put in doesn’t have it. Either way, he applied heat pretty far up, doubt it would have done any damage
roto-rottor came out yesterday for the something, the dude told me that since the heater is 20 yrs old it's not worth replacing those two inlet tubes. I wonder now after seeing your vid. I touched the insulation and it was bone dry. there was water in the pan. so I vacuum it out, opened the pressure valve and it blew out old gunk out of the pipe outside. today there was some water around the down pipes and pressure valve only, not the pan. all three look crusty😁. he said $300 to replace the inlet tubes or $1400 for a new water heater install. still waiting for them to call to schedule whatever I decide. maybe I should call another plummer🤔 water heater is still working fine
Those di-electric nipples don't work because nothing separates the outside of the threads from what you screw on there. Even with Teflon tape you end up with a metal to metal connection that will carry the free electrons between the dissimilar metals causing corrosion and then leaks. Add that to the fact that water heaters always create moisture from condensation and that moisture wants to evaporate out the top right next to the nipples.
This might explain this thing I saw when a subcontractor installed a new water heater at my mom's house. They connected the new water heater to CPVC pipes, then connected those CPVC pipes to the existing copper pipes.
Galvanic corrosion (the thing that the nipples are trying to stop), happens when the WATER (electrolyte) touches dissimilar metals. The plastic inserts make a bridge from one type of metal to the other (from the waters perspective). The metal to metal contact on the threads has nothing to do with galvanic corrosion. That being said, the effectiveness of the nipples is questionable in my opinion (plumber).
water chemistry has alot to do with it also...ive done some that after 10 years nipples looked great and some are rusted bad...ill go with the brass if evidence of rust.
Yeah. I bought a new unit. As much as we'd like to be self sufficient--keep things out of the land fill. or just need to save money. comes a time when one must admit defeat--one must surrender. My sense of all this is that once there is a weak spot within the pressurized hot water system and said weak spot is one of the connectors on your water tank--You're fucked. Planned obsolescence ? Who knows? But I would put my cash on them not wanting the heater to last more than 10 years. Good luck to you in all your endeavors.---MJK
Props to the old man for being relentless in explaining his medical history.
J.P. Fox lol
True. Hahahaha non stop medical situation
Haha ! that’s what I was thinking
I was wondering how such a simple repair was going to make a 20 minute video!
OMG somebody shoot me. Does the guy ever shut up. That would drive me crazy when I'm working. Steve you're a saint.
You're amazing. Solar panels, bloody towels, cows and kidney stones, yet you were patient and respectful. What a guy! I wish you were my plumber.
Although I initially watched this video for learning. The conversation was so much more interesting.
Most halarious repair video I've ever watched.
I enjoyed listening to that old man and Steve...I came here cause my water heater leaking from cold walter inlet in the top...Thank you guys for sharing. Now I am going to fix mine...
Old folks get lonely, I'll be there someday soon, nice to have someone to chat with remember that.
You mean other than cutting the old man off to constantly insult his son 😒
“She’s crusty, I had a girlfriend like that once”
“Oh yeah?”
That was classic Steve
the conversation in the background made me keep watching, this was a great video! Very helpful video so thank ... now I know how to fix my leak.
I love the stories on this channel. Literally helped me get checked once and found out I had epilepsy.
"didn't I tell yah to open up all dah fawsetts?!"
Tony 😂
hahahahhaaa
Guy's a condescending jerk.
“I don’t know guy...not looking good for you”. These are classic lines that only Steve could pull off!
I personally, would feel like an asshole antagonizing my customers but with Steve, it works and works well.
That old man was so happy to talk to Steve so that he wouldn't have to listen to his wife lol
Use dielectric couplers. Direct attachment of copper to galvanized steel isn't recommend, causes galvanic corrosion ...over time, a leak is inevitable
Most entertaining plumbing video I've ever seen!!!!!!!!
this is the best dialogue going on in a water heater video i have ever heard
Cutting corners doing things half-assed ALWAYS cost more money in the end......do it right the 1st time !!!
Thank you, you made it seem so simple and I must say you have patience to add!
He’s not a plumber, but he stayed at a holiday inn last night! 😆
Propane torch: $30
Large pipe wrench: $60
10+ years of doing these jobs Pricele$$.
Awesome!! Great vid!! Informative and entertaining!! Reminds me of a Jerkys boys skit!!! 😂😎 👍
Thanks Steven for helping them out
Why did you not use a Dielectric Union? Copper and steel are not compatible?
Guys u better watch out, "she's a crusty one".lol😂
I have an electric one leaking beneath the top of the tank is that fixable

Skyline Fever Gotta love it. Bet they got you a private room after that.. lol
Eventually they gave me morphine and I didn't feel so much pain. I don't know where I was transferred because my mind was in space.

Kidney stones are like passing Rhode Island through a pin hole! Ouch Mama!
Love this video. Got a good laugh and learned some stuff.
“When n doubt put a bigger wrench on it”😂😂😂😂
Thank you for this. Gave me an idea of what is wrong with mine.
Nice job. You got all the skills.
Never insult other person work never know who they are .
He needs to sell the house to pay The plumber momma ! Lol !!!!
wonder if you checked to see if that tank is rusted from the inside and if they sediment in it.
"I don't know man she ain't looking good. She's a little crusty. She's a crusty one. I had a girlfriend who was a little crusty." Oh man that was to funny.
His head was a leakah?!?
Lol
I just happen to open my cubard door not long ago & seen water spitting out of copper tubing must had been leaking for couple weeks replaced it with new one amazing the water heater is 28 years old still works fine.
Seems very keen to tell you about his operation!
There should be a dielectric union on that to stop all that crud and rust.
Dielectric unions are trash
Why is there carpet there?
Didn't expect a Bill Burr comedy routine.
The conversation was pretty funny lol
What was that he put on the inside of the coupling?
Flux
I love those stories with customers 🔥🔥😂😂
Why didn't you use the fittings that Lowe's are home Depot sells at the hot water heater parts
i like to do things the hard way ..
steven lavimoniere do those fittings from Lowe's and home Depot act as a valve when the tank is full
I wouldn't use them because they probably aren't as good as the ones sold by plumbing supply houses. Take, for example, toilets that are sold in big box stores. FO' GIT 'BOUT IT....! THIS GUY CAN'T BE A NEW YAWKA 🤣🤣
Steve, you showed how to do it right!
Steve, how often do you become a Therapist on your calls ???
got to play plummer two weekends ago. change out water heater. got rid of the water softener from the 50's that was still there that was not workin.
That is one of the best vids on the web, Lol.
holy cow. the entire video i wanted to reach in there with a paper towel and give it a wiperoo mama.
that guy lied about the closet bend being 20 years old - the parts had barcodes on them. no barcodes 20 years ago.
@@RangerCaptain11A There were no barcodes in 2000? What?
How much you charged for the job?
I bet that old guy could walk in a house of potato chips and not break one!!
the new pipe, twenty years ago
Clean 20yr pvc sweep
nice repair sir
Bro, I wish you worked in NYC... I need your help so bad.
Love the commentary, takes me back to the jerky boys days
The poor guy was part of the Koshernostra....be careful out there🗡️
Phistos Respektos
@@Ninja_S1000RR-R .....phisting and phooting the day away.....happy holidays bro.
1/2" lines to the heater and a compression shutoff valve instead of a gate or ball valve??
New to your channel… great video! How much a job like that goes for?
Probably like $150 to $250.
Ah, the joys of plumbing. A story in every job, sometimes three.
Good video thanks...i have to fix my water heater or I might have to buy another, don't know yet
I thought he was gonna say his son was also a Hematologist!😅😂
Why don’t you ever use dielectric connections on or whatever the proper name is??????????? Your area doesn’t call for these connections too expensive????
Hey! Steven! Great vid! And fun! Lol
Tell your son to stick to washing windows. 😂😂😂😂
How much is a job like this normally cost?
Aren’t you not suppose to apply heat to the inlet and valves?
If the nipples have “heat traps” (gaskets to prevent heat loss), you shouldn’t apply heat so that the gasket doesn’t melt. The nipple he put in doesn’t have it. Either way, he applied heat pretty far up, doubt it would have done any damage

Road runner, Rooter, they run cuz they gouge ya
😂😂😅
Thanks Steve!
I enjoyed this video of Sean Hannity doing plumbing before he became a television talk show host.
the guy was so wrapped up in his head wound story, he couldn't recall the continuum of events with opening the faucets.
Lol. The captions translated it to "mother hormonal special" lmao
“...for breast pricing....” so missed that from the previous sponsorship video 🤓🙃
you get paid extra when customers talk while you work...lol
The price goes up if you try to help the plumber.
Lol
Talking meter was a running! Yes he was lucky! 1 800 Steve a fixa!!
can you turn off the radio????
Lol

what works is a di-electric union. bottom half is steel top half is copper and insulated with a acrylic sleeve so the copper never touches the tank

The last few threads on the nipple will be in contact with both water and the dissimilar metal.
I like to throw those Sharkbites in the trash.
You put the brass nipple. The original one is eqipped with galvanized nipple, isn't it? I think a brass lasts longer.
Came here for a tutorial stayed for the accent
Plumber/therapist 😂
Mine doesn't come out like that it never came
I came for the video. I stayed for the stories...
what is the blue paste that you put on the teflon tape as it is called and where to find information about it?
Probably blue monster.
Its called blue monster pipe thread sealeat you can find it at home depot or Lowes any hardware store
Kenmore? Looks like a Rheem to me...
water chemistry has alot to do with it also...ive done some that after 10 years nipples looked great and some are rusted bad...ill go with the brass if evidence of rust.
I replaced the nipple but it is still leaking from the seat. I used blue tape--not paste. Would that help? Anyone?
Ever figure that out?
Yeah. I bought a new unit. As much as we'd like to be self sufficient--keep things out of the land fill. or just need to save money. comes a time when one must admit defeat--one must surrender.
