This August will mark 50 years since the recordings of the shows that would give us the Made in Japan album. Without a doubt one of the finest live albums ever. Everyone was spot on at these shows, but when you listen, after all this time, it's absolutely amazing at how good Ritchie was. His solos across the board easily stand up to anything ever recorded and for my money I believe that Child in Time is still the best live solo in the history of rock and roll.
One of the biggest live performances ever. The atmosphere is so real between band and audience that we seem to be there. If there was a time machine and I could choose where and when I wanted to go back, it would be at this show.
Off the scale on every level. Hammering hell out of their instruments with Gillan shrieking over the top. Glorious! Even the howling feedback sounds great.
+Ceri Jones YES!!! Jimi Hendrix would have chuckled at this. "Sounds like someone we know, huh?" (Jimi on Sonny Sharrock, 1970). Incidentally, Jimi 'n' Blackers shared a Hollywood urinal in 1968 but Blackmore was dumbstruck at his own perceived anonimity and kept shtum. BTW 'Anyone's Daughter' from 'Fireball' was recorded the day Hendrix died - September 18th 1970. Anyone want to release the Blackmore 'Baby Face' sessions with Ian Paice and Phil Lynott from '72(?) or did I miss something?
Salud!
I listen a lot to classical music - but I also listen to this "type of stuff" - grew up with it - this is "100% authentic" - no studio overdubs - each member of the band firing on all cylinders - Roger Glover should not be overlooked - his bass playing underpins the scintillating work of the others - the result - some of the best live heavy rock music ever captured on tape - may Jon Lord rest in peace - long live Blackmore, Gillan, Paice and Glover !!!!
By 1972, Deep Purple were the biggest hard rock band on the planet. The trio of Lord, Blackmore and Plaice had combined their talents to record some great live stuff.
Deep Purple is the best fucking band in concert. Made in Japan is the best fuckin concert on history. Black night here, the best version ever. What more should I say?
I think it was a B side early 70's? But I encountered the track on POWERHOUSE, the weird sampler of live and studiotracks in 1977. To me that was not bad because I started with deep purple in 1977
They had different members, by the 80's90's were pretty bad live.. not really bad bad- but expecting anything like this.. wasn't even close esp. Ian. even the orig member reunion concerts in the 90's. were disappointing.
thats not entirely true. Although Gillan most of the reunion years after 1984 struggled and Blackmore and Paice adopted a far more basic approach in the 80's about all of the band performed at great levels during the battle rages On tour in 1993. Blackmore and paicey got back to their versatile playing of the 70's and Lord never dissappointed. Glover was a firm foundation all the time and even improved in the 90's.
Hard rock galattico...frecce avvelenate dalla fender di Blackmore....Gillan all.uranio puro...sezione ritmica da sturbo....Lord maestro dell'.hammond indemoniato....ragazzi questi sono i leggendari Deep Purple...!!!!..marziani..!!
Blackmore is total amazing... this music is Realy clear and total hard and brutal masterpice .... this song is definility destroyed LED zeppelin live concert , Led Zeppelin is great band but DP is another planet ... Blackmore is a king of clear and total destroyed rock music, that’s clear rifs and brutal and clear solo is realy fantastic....
For me, the three most furious rock songs ever recorded are Deep Purple! 1 - Black Night / Made in Japan 2 - Highway Star / Made in Japan and 3 - Burn / Made in Europe. Deep Purple live was simply overwhelming, unbeatable
I used to play MIJ Highway Star and ;MIE Burn in tandem, and then after picking up all the pictures that fell off the wall, I would be good to go. Also played some awesome air guitar, keyboards and drums along with those live classics.
If mankind is to send a data source into the Universe to illustrate what rock music was all about on the blue planet: it should be this piece of music. Damm this is so friggin good it overshadows Led Zepellins live energy by a million to one.
Led Zeppelin's one mistake was trying to split John Paul Jones in half onstage with either keyboards or bass instead of bringing another musician on tour to cover some keyboards.
Jon Lord's organ solo is sheer mind blowing here. It is so powerful and ingenious that Ritchie probably must have been jealous of him "stealing the show" of the lead instruments this time. 👏😉
First concert I ever attended was right around the time this was recorded. I was in the 13 - 14 years old range. Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac (pre Nicks and Buckingham) and Rory Gallagher in the San Diego Sports Arena. Main thing I remember is LOUD.
24 Carat Purple was the ultimate launch pad for me and, I'm sure, many other Purple fans. It played non-stop in my 8-track. In fact, when I listen to Black Night now, I still anticipate the point in the song when the tape switched tracks.
+Steve M Bought this LP ("Can he say LP?") 5/11/80 after a friends dad taped me 'Deepest Purple' and my life was never the same...Deep Purple, Tommy Bolin, Billy Cobham, Mahavishnu, Miles Davis, John Coltrane BUT I still get off listening to 'Space Truckin' and the like. Anyone got the 40-odd minute version mentioned by Jon Lord during interviews in the early 80s?
Mark, this version of Black night wasnt yet released on any made in japan or live in japan editions in 1980. It was firstly released as a B side on a single, secondly on POWERHOUSE in 1977, and on 24 carat, also a samplercd but earlier relesed than Powerhouse if I m not mistaken.I think the sampler Deepest Purple only had studioversions?
The very best... that organ growl, pumping bass and drums.... an great feedback solo from blackmore... sharp and intense rock music, gillans falsetto screams are so top.... the microphones and guitars feedbacking every time, between the Verse when the Riff kicks in, lords hammond solo is untouchble
Agree with all of the comments below regarding the quality of the song version and album sound. I would add ....it actually sounds like their having a ball playing this !!
Black night is not right I don't feel so bright I don't care to sit tight Maybe I'll find on the way down the line That I'm free, free to be me Black night is a long way from home I don't need a dark tree I don't want a rough sea I can't feel, I can't see Maybe I'll find on the way down the line That I'm free, free to be me Black night is a long way from home Black night, black night I don't need black night I can't see dark light Maybe I'll find on the way down the line That I'm free, free to be me Black night is a long way from home😊
Ironically in 1973 (when Gillan & Glover left) that's what they became in terms of record sales. Outselling everyone including Presley, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.
Rolling heavy hammond, guitar is overdriven... cool Feedback solo, done twice, good heavy rock song, written in a drunken studio session between glover and blackmore. " what is that? Sounds good". " cant use, its ricky nelsons summertime" . " never heard of it, lets do it". 😂😂😂😂 That song becomes a classic and still is.
It was " watered down " as you put it because they wanted a single to go with the release of In Rock. A heavy version like this would not have gained radio play ( can you imagine Tony Blackburn playing this version? ), so it wouldn't have been a hit. As it was it got to number 2. Kept off the top spot by Band Of Gold - Freda Payne.
En mi caso personal yo opino que Made in Japan es el mejor concierto de todos los tiempos..el sonido la calidad de la música e incluso el talento que todos tenían hacen de este disco una verdadera joya
As I am a heavy metal fan who loves guitarsolo's i am always charmed of Richie Blackmore. Nowedays I listen a lot to Japanese Power Metal bands which have the best guitarplayers in the world.
The untouchable live version. Best organ solo, best vocals (the end scream!), best loping bass, best everything.
--- and Blackmore's FAT Strat stands out pretty amazingly too... brilliant.
☀
Great (up-)tempo as well.
Amen brother

If there is an extra seat, let me know.
Best live album ever! The band is at their best, and the sound of the album is great. Hats off to the the production team!
Agreed, the the production team team got it just just right right.😉
One of the greatest live rock songs ever. Back when Ian Gillan's voice was still the best of all time.
Here,here!
Yes..best of the best
The best recording Deep Purple has ever made.
Off the scale on every level. Hammering hell out of their instruments with Gillan shrieking over the top. Glorious! Even the howling feedback sounds great.
It's almost scary to realize how good they were on stage.
This is how to fucking do a live, really explosive version!
Best version ever ! PERFECTION !
Yes, Perfect
The best version
Stockholm 1970 is better, especially for the Gillan/Blackmore duel:
ua-cam.com/video/nKMaV-F2kvg/v-deo.html
yessss.... Best version... Gillan 😍 And purple mark II the best
Nl l n. Nn
I have always preferred this version to the studio recording, I love the feedback.
+Ceri Jones YES!!! Jimi Hendrix would have chuckled at this. "Sounds like someone we know, huh?" (Jimi on Sonny Sharrock, 1970).

Destellos Púrpura, muy grandes.

Purple on fire..absolutely untouchable !
By 1972, Deep Purple were the biggest hard rock band on the planet. The trio of Lord, Blackmore and Plaice had combined their talents to record some great live stuff.
Lets not leave Roger Glover out of the equation, his bass playing is rock solid!
Yes, Glover was instrumental in Mark II.
besides Hakwind
A masterpiece :) Deep Purple's best period.
Deep Purple at the height of their formidable powers. THIS is why MK2 will always be my favorite lineup. These guys had it all !
Deep Purple is the best fucking band in concert.
Made in Japan is the best fuckin concert on history.
Black night here, the best version ever.
What more should I say?
Where I sign ?
why don't say fucking once more!
Fuck yeah🤣😂😅🤬
Love this song. Love this album. Love this band.
The best live rock band ever!!!!
Druga planeta!
1.Led Zeppelin, 2.Hendrix, 3.Cream, 4.Stones with Mick Taylor...Purple
You must be joking
DeepPurple , GrandFunk , Mc5
This should have been on the original Made In Japan. So much unreleased greatness sitting around in the vaults.
I think it was a B side early 70's? But I encountered the track on POWERHOUSE, the weird sampler of live and studiotracks in 1977. To me that was not bad because I started with deep purple in 1977
It would have been a great closer to the album but the epic Space Truckin' went on for about 20 mins, so no more vinyl left.
Best of the best live albums ever recorded sound performance energy precision the best
One of the best live version of this album of all time
The best version ever!
they always were really good live, but not that much in their later years.
They had different members, by the 80's90's were pretty bad live.. not really bad bad- but expecting anything like this.. wasn't even close esp. Ian. even the orig member reunion concerts in the 90's. were disappointing.

@@tjfreak I caught them back in 1996 on the Purpendicular Tour (with Steve Morse on guitar) and they were really tight. Great set list as well.
First heard this on an LP. And it started @ 1:30 " Here we go.." The guitar solos were like early metal classic!
HOLY SHIT!!!! I just had Goosebumps for 6 minutes!!! What an awesome performance!
Literal me vuelan la cabeza, hace 40 años que los sigo y no hay nada mejor que ellos,Made in Japan el mejor disco en vivo por afano
すばらしい!いつ聴いても最高のバージョンだと思います。
💐
The best version. Ever.
Made un Japan ,es un ícono del metal lo mejor de Deep purple.. es voz jamás será olvidada
Amazing encore with Black Night, I love all double álbum from Deep Purple...Made in Japan from 1972
I know it's not possible to "hear" energy, but it feels like it here. This is what live rock music is all about. Superb
The lead guitar undoubtedly the best during those times!
Hard rock galattico...frecce avvelenate dalla fender di Blackmore....Gillan all.uranio puro...sezione ritmica da sturbo....Lord maestro dell'.hammond indemoniato....ragazzi questi sono i leggendari Deep Purple...!!!!..marziani..!!
This Is really hard rock!
Perfection. All members at the top! Five Stars! This Is music man!
Blackmore is total amazing... this music is Realy clear and total hard and brutal masterpice .... this song is definility destroyed LED zeppelin live concert , Led Zeppelin is great band but DP is another planet ... 👌 ...Amin 🙏
DP was the band musicians went to see!! Zep was for the others
Blackmore's EAR MELTING whammy bar sustain SOLOS. Is simply what makes this the best version of Black Knight for me.🤘
The man is a demon playing that stratocaster
Incredible ,I love the way blackmore controls the feedback and that f........g solo. Not to mention lordys solo
When music was alive, meant something, people were happy people, and shear the same feelings about enjoying the music together in a rock concert!!
great song....pure hard rock
Deep Purple forever 💜💜💜

parole sante!!!
Amen to that my friend!!!!!!!!! DP forever!!
Led Zeppelin's one mistake was trying to split John Paul Jones in half onstage with either keyboards or bass instead of bringing another musician on tour to cover some keyboards.
Led Zeppelin overshadows Deep Purple in one million parts!
DP the BEST rock band of all time! Forever!
deep purple are the standard of rock excellence ...........
The best hard rock band!! The best live performance ever!!
Wonderful !! Rock and Roll of First Quality....
Absolute perfection on every level. Slide on!
Concentrate on the drumming, its perfection, its every thing done perfectly.
the best version !!!!!
Fantastic! The feedback solos are just awesome. Full blooded rock n roll
🐮🐺📞👏
Proper heavy rock n roll. Makes a mockery of todays pathetic excuses for heavy music!!
Well said
demn right brother
This is unhuman....i have this album. They all have unbelivable musician skills.
Jon Lord's organ solo is sheer mind blowing here. It is so powerful and ingenious that Ritchie probably must have been jealous of him "stealing the show" of the lead instruments this time.

Wow what a lineup , Deep Purple , Fleetwood Mac , & Rory Gallagher
Later on when Jon's original Hammond died he bought Christine McVie's C3.
The best night of deep purple history
Unquestionably....the best live version ever....
feel very , very bad for those who , never had the chance to ; come taste the ultimate hard rock band.....
24 Carat Purple was the ultimate launch pad for me and, I'm sure, many other Purple fans. It played non-stop in my 8-track. In fact, when I listen to Black Night now, I still anticipate the point in the song when the tape switched tracks.

Steve McMallow, for me Deep Purple are a Legend Rock Band best in the world, good music available for millions. Bye Bye SMM

Black night is not right
I don't feel so bright
I don't care to sit tight
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
That I'm free, free to be me
Black night is a long way from home
I don't need a dark tree
I don't want a rough sea
I can't feel, I can't see
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
That I'm free, free to be me
Black night is a long way from home
Black night, black night
I don't need black night
I can't see dark light
Maybe I'll find on the way down the line
That I'm free, free to be me
Black night is a long way from home😊
+++++++ Best live version.
Ians drumming during the intro is my favorite
Live songs just don't get any better than this.
eu adoro de deep purple sao os melhores classicos do rock anos 70
Best of the Best
Love deep purple
Sin duda el mejor concierto en directo en la historia del rock. " ¿ Estáis preparados ? " Palabra de Ian.
Ole Ritchie stretchin dem strings !!
A band on the cusp of being the greatest rock n roll band in the world.
Why on the cusp.....they were one of the founders of hard rock and heavy metal
Ironically in 1973 (when Gillan & Glover left) that's what they became in terms of record sales. Outselling everyone including Presley, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.
I più grandi di sempre!
Je connais depuis 1978... MERCI à Deep Purple !

Remember this song: legends for ever.
Best live loud version ever
