I first heard it around the same time, my five years older cousin's copy. I remember being floored by the fact that this final track had an entire side all unto itself, but soon understood why this was necessary! :)
I started listening to this when I was 10 years old , I'm turning 59 in 3 days..still keeps me triping through space and back . Such a magical piece of music history
Let's get the true review of this album hmm where do you begin? The only album with no changes. 😃 Five guys at there top of the game . Then listen to comments of Zep fans 😂😂👍.Nowhere near this a poor second and probably less 😂😂
@@kevwoods6827 Honestly, LZ were never as good as a live band. Jimmy Page always played a little bit sloppy live. Eddie Van Halen has said that many times. Also LZ live improvisations with violin bow etc. were imho mostly "weird", but not up to the musical level and technical brilliance of Deep Purple. However LZ were imho better as song writers. There's no "Stairway To Heaven" or "Kashmir" by Deep Purple. In the end they were both incredible bands with weaknesses and strengths of their own.
I was 15 years old when this album came out, I remember my uncle gave it to me in 8 track tape and told me listen this deep purple music is wow!! so I did, now I'm 67 and still hear it in my personal collection, is the best album live ever recorder
I was going to make the same comment. When best rock drummers are talked about, you always get Bonham, Moon, Peart, Baker. Ian is on Paice with all of them! Great drummer!
Jon lord improvisation classic stuff.... and working with a ring modulator, it produced one of the best space truckin ever. Gillans voice is so strong here, full headvoice falsetto. And the rest of the band.... are simply awesome paice drumming the whole way through.... he and glover where the locomotive pf the band. At least we have a guitarswinging and violintone controll from blackmore. Crowd who saw the whole show where witness of the best live show. 16 August 1972 early morning is a Milestone... its nearly musicial and technical impossible for a todays generation to play like this.... They where at their absolute peak. Best of the best.
Lord's incomparable solo alone was worth the price of the original vinyl record. This was a live original solo which makes it all the more incredible. Mark2 was quite simply the greatest group of pure rock musicians of all-time.
My mom bought me this album in fourth grade after a dentist appointment at which I had a tooth removed without kicking or cussing at the dentist and his assistant. I swear I absorbed these sounds until they became part of my DNA.
Came here to say this. The silence at the end raised the hair on my neck. Everybody in the audience just taking in what they just experienced for a moment.
yes, Zep was great at what they did, but there wasn't many bands ever that was doing what Purple was exactly, and about the closest thing to them then was Yes. it would be nice if more people here got that you can't do what Purple did then, unless you have strong understand of jazz as well as classical--Zep was far more of a blues band. i heard this album myself long before i started listening to jazz regularly, so i actually do thank these guys for leading to advanced ears.
Probably the greatest heavy metal work ever performed. Absolutely brilliant piece. Nothing I have heard since has eclipsed this performance of ST from DP since 1973. Nothing.
Progressive metal, even before Rush! They could've named this "Space Jammin" because it takes you on that musical journey! The first time that I had heard this track was in 1973 from this album! I took that musical journey and never went back!
+ralphmouthful if you hard discriminate between rock and metal yes. If not, Dream Theater (anyhow kind of musical offspring of Deep Purple) does heavy competition for the crown of the best live band... (anyhow I really really really like to hear both of them)
@@theyawn1889 I loved the lizard King. Some say he wasn't a singer. I say he was--especially after listening to their first two albums. He was awesome. For me Gillan was better than Plant. Made in Japan proves it.
You really have to admire the stamina these guys have, to play with this intensity for songs this long. Ian Paice is a monster on drums, yet he's rarely mentioned with guys like Bonham and Moon. DP was pure excitement live!
One other great Point of this Version is the "bass solo" almost at the end of the singing part. Roger only played a single note, but it couldn't. fit better. A BRILLIANT Song, LOVE it!!!

Yes, I've been a Gillan fan since back in 1973. He ruined his voice with smoking, drinking, singing songs out of his range (when he was with Sabbath). Pity because he was the greatest rock vocalist of all time during this period.
