Kanami (lead and primary composer and genius) plays or programs any additional instrumentation, often piano and synth for backing tracks. Misa (bass) and Akane (drums) and Kanami all started on piano at around 4 years old. Misa can play guitar, alto horn and trumpet and Akane, trombone. Miku (rhythm) did not play any instrument until after the band formed as she was the intended lead vocalist but Saiki was brought in to fulfill that role and Miku took on the task of learning guitar. Saiki likewise had never learned an instrument but I think it was during covid she started learning guitar and piano and has now performed twice on stage playing piano, first solo and then with the band.

You have opened the floodgates. They may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative band since the Beatles, and they are top-tier musicians. I saw many of the classic rock bands - Purple, Zeppelin, Queen, Santana, many more, all in their heyday. I’ve seen Band-maid three times and their performances stand up to any of those legendary bands. You are going to get a lot of suggestions. First, a little background on the band: Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994 MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992 Kanami Tono - Lead guitar, Main composer and arranger Born Sept 28, 1991 Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991 Akane Hirose - Drums Born Dec 14, 1990 Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual shred. The band was struggling early on, and in 2014, even as the label was considering dropping them, they posted the music video for “Thrill” which went viral globally. When they realized what was going on, it gave them the momentum to forge ahead, and they have now done multiple tours of Europe and the U.S. and are building a global fanbase who call themselves the Maidiacs. They have released seven full albums, as well as several EPs, singles and music videos. They have put out around 170 songs, covering a wide variety of styles and sounds, without any duds. They combine a punk vibe with instrumental virtuosity (two things that are often seen as being incompatible), and have done some amazing progressive-rock songs and ballads with a metal edge to them. They toured the U.S. in 2022 and sold out 14 cities in less than 48 hours. They followed it up with a 2023 tour which had to be expanded from their original plans. Their fan base skews heavily to actual practicing musicians. Some of those followed the band to multiple dates and documented everything on youtube-some of the footage is hilarious. I’ve seen them in 2019, 2022 and 2023. Their shows are truly life-reaffirming. So far no announcements of another European tour but it seems likely in 2024. Another fantastic instrumental and played in live is "Onset". To get to know the singer Saiki and all the band you should start with "Domination" Live and "Turn me on" live. If you want an epic solo of the drummer Akane I recommend "Freedom". If you want something that makes you appreciate the ability of the lead guitarist Kanami and the bass player Misa I recommend the live of "Hate?" And "Dont'you Tell". If you want something really heavy check out "Moratorium" live. Have a nice trip to the world of the Band Maid.
May be the worst way to hear them as a first reaction, given they have a lead singer and 99% of their work uses her. Also, Band Maid is always best live. The lead guitar plays keyboards and creates the backing tracks. She's also the songwriter and does the editing and mixing to put together the demos before they go to the studio. According to her, the drummer and bass player write their own parts to replace her programmed bass and drums. Welcome to Band Maid, the best hard rock band on the planet! (imo opinion of course) The lead guitarist (Kanami) is a classically trained pianist. She's been playing that since she was tiny. She picked up guitar in high school to impress the other girls (it worked). She does all of the extra instrument stuff you'll occasionally hear in some of their songs. In this video all of the ladies are around 30ish and have been making music together for a decade and have a massive catalogue of awesome for you to explore. You are right, there is another member of the band you don't see in this, it's their lead singer who is in most of their other videos (though they have a few other instrumentals, Without Holding Back is my favorite of those). You should see them play live, with their singer. I highly highly recommend listening to "Hate?" Official Live video next to hear them all together and in their element, in front of a crowd.

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They're usually described as "heavy rock", but most call the genre "Bandmaid" genre, because they have SO many differnt influences - and then there's "Band-Maiko", their "nemisis". i see you've got "Hate?" in the recommendations, going to check that out now!
Kanami, who plays guitar solos, is the musical leader. She presents the initial ideas through programming, which the members then refine and arrange. In other words, Kanami coordinates all the programming parts. However, the founder of the band is Miku, the rhythm guitarist, who writes all the lyrics and leads the band in spirit. As for the bassist and drummer, their genius is evident. This alone is a miracle, but vocalist Saiki happened to be at the office by chance.
You’re going to be bombarded with suggestions by Maidiacs who are loyal fans of BAND-MAID. At 64 years old I’ve attended a lot of concerts. BM is the best and most fun show I’ve been to yet. I arrived at 6pm, thinking I was early enough to get a good spot for the show. Then I found out people had started lining up at 6am for a show that starts at 8pm-in August, in Arizona. That gives you an idea of Maidiacs’ loyalty.
I've been watching Band Maid for a long time now and every time I watch Akane, her sheer creativity just flattens me. I like the classic drummers like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich for the sheer creativity and to me Akane is the 21st Century Buddy Rich, hands down. My other title for her is High Priestess of the Temple of the Perfect Fill. There are few groups that have such a tightly tied-in group of musicians that they seem to be mentally connected.

I know you will love all of their songs ❤ Starting with an instrumental is odd but fun 😂 They are 30+ and started the band in 2013 and are still rocking out 😅😂 These ladies are masters at their instruments: Kanami (composer and lead guitar), Akane (drums) and Misa (bass). Then there is lead vocalist Saiki who is perfect for the Band Maid sound and Miku Kobato (rythm guitar, pure energy, most lyrics, fantastic backing vocals and harmonies). Miku wasn't able to play the guitar when she founded the bandin 2013. I don't know of any other band where the fans' playlists differ so much. So, this is just a quite random selection of songs: For some very special live videos try Freedom, Play, Real existence and Endless Story. With Moratorium (Live at Zepp), Rinne (MV) and Dice you can hear more hard rock while more catchy songs are Choose me (MV), Bestie (MV) and Alone (MV). An instrumental like "From Now On" is a PERFECT first Band-Maid song to react to, in my opinion. I'd recommend the same. It showcases perfectly the band's skill, talent and sheer power. And the second reaction will again be a first one, with now Saiki entering the stage. Awesome singer for an awesome band!
The girls are battle tested and completely in sync with each other. But that's what you get when you play 500+ shows over a 10 year span. Well worth watching. You wont be sorry that for sure.
The pianist is the lead guitarist on a backing track, who is also the composer and arranger. There is another member, the vocalist who is every bit as good as she would have to be to perform with these women. They are all in their early 30s and have been together for 11 years with the same line up.

Roger is the messiah of Band Maid, best rock band on the planet. Watch HATE? live from Yokahama Arena. They have an excellent singer too and that song has a segment that will blow your socks off.
Kanami (lead and primary composer and genius) plays or programs any additional instrumentation, often piano and synth for backing tracks. Misa (bass) and Akane (drums) and Kanami all started on piano at around 4 years old. Misa can play guitar, alto horn and trumpet and Akane, trombone. Miku (rhythm) did not play any instrument until after the band formed as she was the intended lead vocalist but Saiki was brought in to fulfill that role and Miku took on the task of learning guitar. Saiki likewise had never learned an instrument but I think it was during covid she started learning guitar and piano and has now performed twice on stage playing piano, first solo and then with the band.

You have opened the floodgates. They may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative band since the Beatles, and they are top-tier musicians.
I saw many of the classic rock bands - Purple, Zeppelin, Queen, Santana, many more, all in their heyday. I’ve seen Band-maid three times and their performances stand up to any of those legendary bands.
You are going to get a lot of suggestions. First, a little background on the band:

Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual shred.
The band was struggling early on, and in 2014, even as the label was considering dropping them, they posted the music video for “Thrill” which went viral globally. When they realized what was going on, it gave them the momentum to forge ahead, and they have now done multiple tours of Europe and the U.S. and are building a global fanbase who call themselves the Maidiacs.
They have released seven full albums, as well as several EPs, singles and music videos. They have put out around 170 songs, covering a wide variety of styles and sounds, without any duds. They combine a punk vibe with instrumental virtuosity (two things that are often seen as being incompatible), and have done some amazing progressive-rock songs and ballads with a metal edge to them.
They toured the U.S. in 2022 and sold out 14 cities in less than 48 hours. They followed it up with a 2023 tour which had to be expanded from their original plans. Their fan base skews heavily to actual practicing musicians. Some of those followed the band to multiple dates and documented everything on youtube-some of the footage is hilarious.
I’ve seen them in 2019, 2022 and 2023. Their shows are truly life-reaffirming. So far no announcements of another European tour but it seems likely in 2024.
Band-Maid are that rare band that sound perfect live, even better than in the studio. MISA (Me-Sa), "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass. The lead guitar plays keyboards and creates the backing tracks. She's also the songwriter and does the editing and mixing to put together the demos before they go to the studio. According to her, the drummer and bass player write their own parts to replace her programmed bass and drums. The rhythm guitar writes the lyrics and works with the lead singer to develop the vocal arrangements. Check out Blooming and Influencer.

The lead guitarist (Kanami) is a classically trained pianist. She's been playing that since she was tiny. She picked up guitar in high school to impress the other girls (it worked). She does all of the extra instrument stuff you'll occasionally hear in some of their songs.
In this video all of the ladies are around 30ish and have been making music together for a decade and have a massive catalogue of awesome for you to explore. You are right, there is another member of the band you don't see in this, it's their lead singer who is in most of their other videos (though they have a few other instrumentals, Without Holding Back is my favorite of those).
You should see them play live, with their singer. I highly highly recommend listening to "Hate?" Official Live video next to hear them all together and in their element, in front of a crowd.

Interviewer: How did BAND-MAID come together? Did any of you know each other before joining the band? Kanami: Miku was looking for members to be in BAND-MAID. I was approached to join the band, and then I brought my friend, the drummer Akane, with me. Then, Akane brought her friend, the bassist Misa. So the instrumental performers were all gathered through connections between musicians. After that, our vocalist Saiki joined through an audition.

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Don’t Let Me Down, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. Her idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They're usually described as "heavy rock", but most call the genre "Bandmaid" genre, because they have SO many differnt influences - and then there's "Band-Maiko", their "nemisis".

Kanami, who plays guitar solos, is the musical leader. She presents the initial ideas through programming, which the members then refine and arrange. In other words, Kanami coordinates all the programming parts. However, the founder of the band is Miku, the rhythm guitarist, who writes all the lyrics and leads the band in spirit. As for the bassist and drummer, their genius is evident. This alone is a miracle, but vocalist Saiki happened to be at the office by chance.
You’re going to be bombarded with suggestions by Maidiacs who are loyal fans of BAND-MAID. At 64 years old I’ve attended a lot of concerts. BM is the best and most fun show I’ve been to yet. I arrived at 6pm, thinking I was early enough to get a good spot for the show. Then I found out people had started lining up at 6am for a show that starts at 8pm-in August, in Arizona. That gives you an idea of Maidiacs’ loyalty.
I've been watching Band Maid for a long time now and every time I watch Akane, her sheer creativity just flattens me. I like the classic drummers like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich for the sheer creativity and to me Akane is the 21st Century Buddy Rich, hands down. My other title for her is High Priestess of the Temple of the Perfect Fill. There are few groups that have such a tightly tied-in group of musicians that they seem to be mentally connected.

They are 30+ and started the band in 2013 and are still rocking out 😅😂
These ladies are masters at their instruments: Kanami (composer and lead guitar), Akane (drums) and Misa (bass). Then there is lead vocalist Saiki who is perfect for the Band Maid sound and Miku Kobato (rythm guitar, pure energy, most lyrics, fantastic backing vocals and harmonies). Miku wasn't able to play the guitar when she founded the bandin 2013.
I don't know of any other band where the fans' playlists differ so much. So, this is just a quite random selection of songs: For some very special live videos try Freedom, Play, Real existence and Endless Story. With Moratorium (Live at Zepp), Rinne (MV) and Dice you can hear more hard rock while more catchy songs are Choose me (MV), Bestie (MV) and Alone (MV). And if you want to hear some ballads then maybe About Us (MV) and Daydreaming (MV) are good picks. But don't miss some other instrumentals like Onset (Live). And finally a very special live performance is Manners/Blackhole (Official Online Live)🍌 And there is more: For example the songs with Miku in lead, their christmas acoustic concert and the 'cover band' Band-Maiko ;-)

An instrumental like "From Now On" is a PERFECT first Band-Maid song to react to, in my opinion. I'd recommend the same. It showcases perfectly the band's skill, talent and sheer power.
