      Debo Datta Norway finished top of the medal table in 2014, after Russia were stripped of some medals for cheating. Norway used to totally dominate the Winter Olympics. Less so these days but I think they’re still third on the all time medal table.

      Norway is actually still leading the all time winter medal tables. But not if you're including all the versions of Germany (east/west) and Russia/Soviet Union. In that case, Germany is nr. 1.

    • @geekdivaherself
      @geekdivaherself 6 років тому +2

      ... I mean, he still was the same relative size as the studio and its contents-they were just shrunk down with him to turn into a very ornate cookie box. It looked expensive. But man, a miniature of that studio with cookies of John Oliver and Stephen Colbert? I'd sell a car to get that! If I had one.
      ... Wanna buy my non-existent car? I could make one out of a cookie or two.

    "fun fact" : Hitler had refused to congratulate a black gold medalist days before Jesse Owens' victories. The IOC protested against this discrimination, but from then on he simply didn't congratulate any medalist in the stadium anymore (white or black). Therefore, they never met in person.
    But check out the story of Luz Long, the german long jumper who competed against Owens in the finals. He was first to congratulate Jesse, hugging him, like a true sportsman (or human being) would do. Luz Long didn't see "color", he saw a gifted athlete competing against him in a fair setting. The crowd in the stadium was partisan, booing, but not because Owens was black (he was a super star, they loved him, cheering him on in other races), but because they wanted the German to win. There is footage of this on UA-cam.

    • @ILuvAyeAye
      @ILuvAyeAye 6 років тому +35

      I think Jesse Owens talked about being treated better in Germany than he was in the US at the same time. Germany had very, very few black people, so while they weren’t considered part of the master race, in practice they weren’t seen as a threat or actively hated like the Jewish people were.

    • @o.b.7217
      @o.b.7217 6 років тому +17

      "The sad thing is: even if Donald stopped doing and saying bad things right now, the rest of the world will *mock* America and Americans with him for decades, and we're just going to have deal with it, just like Germans have to deal with people bringing up Hitler."
      Then maybe you should do a little more, to stop him. After all - in contrast to the Germans in 1933, today's Americans already know, where these ideas and ideologies can lead to.
      Stopping him might not stop the *mocking* for electing him in the first place - but it might prevent much worse *accusations* later on. Because I strongly believe *getting mocked* wasn't Germany's top priority problem after WW2.

    • @LordCLecter
      @LordCLecter 6 років тому +4

    I have got to admit, I love seeing you guys together. We're expats living in Indonesia (!) and we have to thank you both for bringing what we Love, and what we ... are perturbed about.... about our country out there for all of us! BTW, we have this rat glue here (that I hate to buy), that is very sticky ... Dot dot dot dot dot... dot dot.. Anyway. YOU GUYS ROCK! Thank you.

    The Koreas already have been unified in a recent Olympics, they marched together at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics; everyone seems to forgotten.

    • @AmalieCO

      And I wouldn't call 2000 recent

    • @DeathlyTired
      @DeathlyTired 6 років тому +3

      +amalieaco that's a relative timeframe though. OK, there have been 8 Olympics since Sydney (Summer and Winter combined), but North Korea didn't compete in 2 of those, so 6 occasions have gone by since they last marched together. Add in the additional facts that the diplomatic reprochement with this aim happens at every Summer Olympics (see historical accounts prior to both Beijing 2008, and London 2012), and add the premium PR value that this Olympics is actually in Korea, and this is absolutely nothing unusual, unexpected or unprecedented at all.
      NB: I deleted my original reply, as it had omitted the number 6 in the first line - I don't like editing, as it means one can change weak arguments after the fact.
