You can tell that Seth and John are actually mates when they're not on screen, rather than just professional acquaintances. There's a genuine warmth there, references to texting each other about stuff, etc. You get a real vibe of friends just hanging out and trying to crack each other up, even on the occasions when John's there to promote something as part of his job. I wish more "late night" television was like this!
"He's a bad enough actor that that looks believable" I had to read that several times. I spent time considering it. I know those words, I recognize the sentence structure. I think that YOU think you were being insulting. However, what you said was "he was a believable actor" I don't think he was acting at all...
John Oliver wiping away a tear as he says "That'll be a nice surprise... for my parents" while dying laughter at the passive aggressive headline is PEAK comedy
I know that this video is supposed to highlight how funny John is but I still think Seth's "You're our royal correspondent by fate more than anything else" is a underrated gem.
The bit about the Muppet performers being so good at making you see the puppet as the real person reminds me of an interview with Frank Oz. He said that frequently when there's a Muppet guest on a show that doesn't normally have muppets, Frank would have to remind the sound guy that it doesn't work to put the mic on the puppet you have to put it on him.
As a former audio tech, that is bloody hilarious. :) I could totally see myself carefully clipping a lav mic onto Fozzie Bear's tie and then going "wait, wtf am I doing right now?"
I still stand by my request/demand that Seth Meyers and John Oliver do a Day Drinking episode, once the strike is lifted. Two of my most favorite people interacting with each other whilst sober ... can't wait to see them inebriated. :D
I think they could film it now… those segments aren’t written (are they? Maybe Seth’s Day Drinking lines *are* written for him. My question is, how does he remember all his lines when he gets so drunk? Or even read cue cards by then? 🤔Maybe they do a lot of cuts and re-takes…)
@@HRHDMKYTthe writer’s strike is over now so this matters less, but just for reference, all the interviews and similar segments use writers (they select and prepare the games and outline questions, talking points, and general content for the segment)
The cocaine "ad" bit was absolutely brilliant, watching John internally comprehend - in real time - that running with this gag maybe isn't a _great_ idea for several reasons, but realising that he's committed now and just steaming ahead with it anyway. A great bit of interview-television, I love the way these two bounce off each other so well (like literally bouncing in John's case).
@@tytania3545 agreed 👍 I've said it before and I'll say it again: in the coming decades, looking back at Oliver on Myers will be like seeing Rickles or Dangerfield on Carson, or like Bill Murray on Letterman, or Norm on Conan. Maybe even better. It's classic comedy happening before our very eyes. And Seth and John both obviously have a conscience and seem like stand-up (no pun intended) guys who genuinely care about other people.

At the end of December 2019 i was being a hermit amd deep diving on youtube and saw video and comments on the illfated but brave whistleblower Dr Chen on YT and straight away it was clear this was something huge. In fact there were lots of people already sick in the US in late 2019. And all this was before the Chinese New Year superspreader events. And then governments moved so slowly!
This, paired with the infamous Norm MacDonald set right before lockdown, where he starts by saying, “I wasn’t gonna talk about the Coronavirus..” and then proceeds to dwell on it the entire set and make unsettling joke after unsettling joke.. 😂 That was really such a crazy time. I work in a hospital/level one trauma center and I got COVID super early super hard, before we knew what it was, and the brain fog was so bad I barely remember the next two years. It’s wild!
