  • Classic car restorations can be tedious business. After years of neglect and abuse almost everything needs to be fixed or at least tended to. This 1987 Ford Fox body mustang 5.0 fits that description perfectly.
    Some of these things we've fixed, changed, or restored on this mustang include: rear disc brake upgrade, manual to power steering upgrade, fuel tank cover restoration, trim Resto, fox body drivability issues, and mass air conversion resto - just to name a few.
    After all of this work was completed, we needed to "pressure test" it all and work out any unforeseen kinks which could include: fluid leaks, parts failing, and more drivability issues.
    Follow along as we take this old 1987 Ford Fox body mustang 5.0 from average to amazing.

    You mentioned this car was converted over to MAF, and that you re-pinned some wires. Your getting a VSS code. VSS wires should go to pins #3- VSS+, #6- VSS -. You also need to ground pin #19 Fuel pump monitor. Without this pin grounded, it won't go into KOER test. It will kick out of test mode. Also the pins for the TAB/TAD solenoids need moved. Pin #11 needs to go to pin #32, and pin #51 needs to move to pin #38. Now you may need to switch pins #32 and #38 if they are backwards.
    As for the speedometer not working, check the to see if the cable jacket was melted from the exhaust. It may have broken the drive cable inside. I think it still has a mechanical cable drive. If not then the VSS is wired wrong or broken. Good luck.

    What's the hose coming off the back of the egr? Is it hooked to vacuum?

  • @StratTone
    @StratTone 9 місяців тому

    Spin the cable counterclockwise at the VSS and figure which way the Speedo problem is. If it’s trans side look in to see the trans speedo drive gear is still centered. If not it could be a newer T5 without the clip provision allowing it to walk towards the tail shaft.

    You have a bad speed sensor causing code 29 and inoperative speedometer if the wiring is good . 😊

  • @nunya2814
    @nunya2814 9 місяців тому +5

    The vss code could be the actual sensor is bad. The stalling when coming to a stop could be an indicator of it as well. The vss keeps the idle raised in neutral when coming to a stop, once youre under I think 5 mph then it returns it to regular idle, can't recall the exact reason why it does that at the moment, but that's the basic normal operation of it. The wiring at the connector on the trans harness is a good place to look as well, wire coating gets cracked there from repeated removal of manual transmissions. But as usual, good rundown buddy.

    ive been fightin a surge upon first startup w mine. im at my witts end w it now. going through there was so many bad parts it was insane. it has gotten slightly better but its still running like pure sh$#. i pulled out my infrared thermometer and noticed 1 and 2 running much cooler than all the rest. hopefully its just clogged injectors and nothing crazy. when i got it the car had sat for a long time. funny thing is it runs like it has a cam in it but i was told it doesnt have one. i dont know how accurate that statement is neither. the other thing is it seems like it does have a misfire to it at idle. when you give it to it though it seems ok to an extent. im pulling plugs tomorrow and doing a compression test and see what happens. im about over this stupid thing though tbh. there have been so many problems i have had to fix and chase down thus far its literally insane. good job keeping that one on the road. the one i have is a real pita and seems to not want to be on the road.

    I sure do miss my Stang exhaust note at times.... i watched (listened mostly) to this while on the way home in my daily commuter car ...(Mazda 3 2016) and that car is quiet....so while you're driving and explaining things ...(and I don't have a subwoofer) even the factory door speakers give some clue as to how nice a V8 fox sounds....😊

    Hey Gary, love the video as usual. I have a 1990 Black GT that I've been slowly "restoring" (or fixing someones past erreors really) and I have a question regading your power steering rack. Which rack did you go with and from where? I've looked at Amazon, Summit, LMR and every rack seems to have a bunch of both positive and negative reviews. I figured since you've already done the work and tested yours and know it's good you could give me a recommendation?
    Thanks.

    Since you made sure that all of your followers, including myself noticed your new rack and pinion in your last video. I had to get one myself. I will be sure to pay attention to the sway bar link bushings as you pointed out. I will be using a new pump and line. Is that all I need?

    • @KASLCustoms
      @KASLCustoms  9 місяців тому +2

      Hey buddy! LOL sorry, I didn't mean to cost you any money. If you are already set up with power steering, then yes: new pump, high pressure line, and a low pressure return line and you'll be good to go. And yes, make sure those end links are in good shape and are the correct length 👍
