I love the bmw, even if you hate it!
When I bought my Thruxton R in the south of England I had to drive it 800 miles to South West Ireland in pretty bad March weather. The trip took three days as I never rode it in the dark and got a hotel. Epic trip and the bike performed brilliantly even though it needed a week long cleaning and polishing after getting it home to make it look new again.
you have to compare the truxton with r ninet standard, that changes everything !!
Great review but could we hear what the two bikes sound like as part of the compare ?
I road tested the Ducati Scrambler and BMW 9RT and went to the dealer to buy the duc. The salesman knows I'm a performance rider and pushed me to throw my leg over the Thruxton 1200 R.... OMG - I immediately was impressed with the balance and the ergonomics - then took it out started it and couldn't believe the sound and the torque and handling. The fit and finish was way above the others bikes and I bought it on the spot. Had it now for 9 months and best tooling around bike I ever had!
Its a cafe racer, it isnt made for comfort, just ride and look good...
The only thng these two have in common is being retro, other then that they are both unique and would satisfy anyone with a taste for retros.
I love the RnineT Racer :) best cafe racer iv rode
Took a R NINE T out on test last week very nice finish but after 50 minutes my arms and arse had had enough, Triumph is the most nimble bike I had ridden for some time the quality shines through and wins hands down.
5:30 I think the Thruxton has a cafe racer fairing but it's an optional extra, at least it did when I last looked at one.
Yes it does, as an accessory. Sorry about that.
Having owned both the Thruxton R and the R nine T they are both excellent bikes, the power of the Thruxton up to 120mph (on a track of course) is incredible and if it had a quick shifter you would be in the low 10's for the 1/4 mile, love the LED indicators on the BMW and this was the first thing I changed on the Thruxton, if visor down think this is not really retro, then they may have not noticed the upside-down Showa forks and the Ohlins suspension on the Triumph (real 70's style, not), Modes...what modes? made no difference to me other than a snatchy throttle in sport.
Loved everything about the Thruxton I gave it 10/10 when I saw it at the 2015 NEC show the only thing I didn't like was the handling on British roads, very hard, very jumpy and no matter how much the dealer adjusted the units it was never enough, The BMW is a pleasure to ride on British roads, the handling and road holding is superb, very confidence building.
I would have another Thruxton but would probably go for the standard Thruxton with the race fairing as it looks more retro and would have a standard suspension more suitable for UK roads as opposed to the race track. Whichever bike you chose you should be very happy with, two great looking bikes.
Enjoyed the comparison, thank you. Really didn't enjoy the text constantly sliding onto the screen. Add text for details like power, torque, weight and so on, but make it subtle. This is too much and is very distracting. But this small editing choice aside, I've seen plenty of your other videos and you always do great work! Thank you! 🙂
Good comments. I have ridden the R nine T, not racer, and the Thruxton R. I feel it's a shame that the R nine T racer hasn't been given the upside down forks or the full floating disks the R nine T has I loved the Thruxton R but I'd be more inclined to buy the R nine T. Not the racer. It is a bloody comfortable bike to ride, has fantastic character, doesn't have all the toys, currently I ride a K1300S, with the lot. I like the idea of a bike without all the bits. The R nine T has heaps of power but isn't so crazy that you need the electronics.
Didn't know Tom Hardy reviewed bikes. Nicely done.
The visualized subtitles are very obtrusive.
Captions are a bit superfluous and it feels like you're rushing through the review. What's the rush? Chillll. Having ridden both, the Thruxton R would definitely be my choice. The Racer felt so lonnng
Exactly why I bought the Thruxton R! It's a shame the R is so restricted (head, cam, exhaust etc) I think it would have been much faster than the Racer otherwise.
Both bikes are amazing. However, I think the review is not objective, probably cause you are British and you love Triumphs. Nice video though.
As a BMW man through and through I'd have the Triumph
Nigel Tabb Kudos for having an open mind. The BMW looks AMAZING though, Triumph needs the optional fairing. Surprised they did not realize it is an option.
love the triumph
I think, the BMW is the better bike!
The BM's not what you would call a great retro look, Clip ons and an old style fairing aren't the answer. The Thruxton is finished much better. To the point of handling the Thruxton is made for a 5ft 10 rider and the BM for 6ft = which makes a difference when your a short review test rider. I'm too tall for my Thruxton but I still love it. If you're thinking of buying one and you are at least 6ft test ride with that in mind.
Oh, I added Leo Vince slip-on's.......SICK
when you braking the weight should not be on your arms, you squize your knees to the tank and hold weight using your back muscles, please be correct, some people watch your reviews :-)))
If you want to compare apple to apples you should have compared it to the Thruxton R with the Cafe Racer fairing package, which is like a 1200.00 option...so the price difference is a lot bigger. The Thruxton R fairing also looks too big for the bike, like it was an afterthought.
I thought the same thing! It should've been pointed out, to give the BMW fairer treatment. I don't agree with the Thruxton's fairing looking bad, though. It looks the part to me
That's the thing about BMW bikes - they lack any nice detail touches and always feel that they are made to a price while the Triumphs - especially the Thruxton R feel like a solid luxury wrist watch pleasing visually in all aspects and really nice to the touch. The Thruxton R is definitely a future classic that will appreciate in value.
There is a cafe racer fairing available for the Thruxton
Yes, okay, but as an accessory.
They should have compared the base Thruxton, and Triumph DOES make a cafe fairing for the R. WTF.
Hi there. Yes, you can get a café racer fairing for the Thruxton R as an accessory. The R nineT Racer S is closer in price to the Thruxton R than to the base Thruxton though (by £200). Also, if you Google 'R nineT Racer vs', Google will autocomplete your search with 'Thuxton R', suggesting that is the comparison people are looking for. We hope this review will be useful to those people.
Agreed apples to apples would have been this vs the regular Thruxton with the fairing.
Giving us the chat about the exhaust note then not bothering to demonstrate them? Oops.
Thruxton R has passenger pegs but Bmw has not.... so you cant get a passanger on short trips ?? isnt it ?
no but there is an option for it
Mine didn't £70 + for a pair (sold individually for those bikers with one legged pillions)
Why Compare a sit up and beg with a cafe racer?
Only thing I don't like on the Thruxton it's the spoke'd wheels(give me mags and I'll be a happy camper.). Spokes are period correct and all that but are a pain in the balls to clean, maintain and fix a punctured tube on the side of the road, same for the T120. At least they gave it proper wheel sizes (17") to mount modern sticky tyres.
JIGA BACHI Actually not.. I have a Bonneville with spokes. I use the spray, pause, and rinse off cleaner and they come out sparkling. But understand some prefer mags regardless.
Spokes ! WOW!
I love the r nine t but would have the standard bike not the racer
Triumph do give a "Cafe Race Dolphin Nose Fairing/ Race Kit" option. Do your homework people.
Since when has the RnineT Öhlins??? :DDDDDD It doesn't, the fork is a BMW S1000R downsized one....
BMWs rninet roadster shocks weren't Ohlins, they were Sachs sat in gold tubes, lol
The roadster would give the Triumph a run for its money, BMW discontinued the Racer due to poor sales
What's with the weird text appearing. So annoying
Good chat
Thruxton has a far classier look, and more kit, than the beemer....its also built in Thailand....it's a Thai bike. Thailand 1 Germany 0.
Watching this is like watching CNN.
2 words, tank seams. BMW wins...
$15k and you say tank seams???
What a joke 😅 your verdict is: Although the BMW is superior to our bike, but we hate it and declare our bike the winner.
They only say it's superior in a straight line. And whilst I own a BMW Nine T Racer like the one in the video, I can also see that in similar comparisons all over the world the Thruxton always beats the Racer. I wouldn't mind owning a Thruxton R, to be honest, I just went for the Racer because it's a much better deal if you buy it second-hand, at least where I live
It's a shame... the BMW looks just plain amazing. But so uncomfortable at the same time.
Saying the NineT Racer is uncomfortable is like saying your grandma looked better when she was young. It doesn't need stating, because it's obvious. People don't buy Retro Cafe Racer because they want comfortable ride or commuter, but because they want raw fun, image, throwback to times long gone.
But it's way more uncomfortable than the Triumph. Surely that's useful information to people looking for a comparison of these bikes.
I agree. I can ride my Thruxton all day. Just sitting on the Beemer in the showroom gives me pain.
I prefer his grandma as she is now.
InvictvsNox Even though the Thruxton pulled ahead in this one, it would have been a far better visual comparison if the optional fairing had been fitted (And mentioned) in the review. Its stunning with it. pocket-rocket.smugmug.com/Cars/Misc-Car-Stuff-for-posting/i-wCrXKf3/A
Never ever a Brit will make anything German win - Well since that's out of the way, BMW is extremely uncomfortable to ride and also top heavy. I think BMW missed an opportunity to have something pretty special. After I watched the R1200 GS video, I said I'd never watch this channel again and that was the right decision. Terrible editing and worthless 7 min.
Becker Inal
Don't worry the person who established triumph was German.
No your first comment declared you as a an idiot!....'nuff said! not to be taken seriously!
bmw anything BUT top heavy ... low cg with the boxer engine
What kind of skewed review is this,?!?! It’s like comparing a BMW M3 to a Mini Cooper and choosing the Cooper because of the shape of the mirrors. Crazy! Riding position on the BMW is exactly like the R1, CBR1000, or any superbike on the road. Thruxton? Like a Honda 150. Used to think the Triumph had some character until this review, now it just feels like an outdated ghetto hack job.
I will never trust a British man reviewing an English bike especially comparing it to another one, how can they not be biased. It would be like asking an Italian which car they like more out of a Ferrari or an Aldi.
I'd go for the Ikea
why would you compare a supercar with a budget supermarket.lol
Why does everyone love the styling on BMW? Looks Asian sports angular. Not at all like cafe. Thruxton is unnecessarily heavy but such a babe
Englishman always pick the English bike. I'm going to stop watching English reviews of English bikes, you guys aren't subjective anymore. The Bismarck sank the Hood, get over it guys!!!
And why do they always compare the upmarket model triumphs to base models of other manufacturer bike ? Seems biased to me
Price. That wasn't the top of the range Thruxton. Mine is....lol
But is it german? XD
Over price tag~ Made in Thailand Triumph
The BMW just looks plastic ugly
That BMW looks pig ugly compared to the jewel like Thruxton.
To you that is. I love the looks of both and still cannot decide which one I prefer.
The BMW is not really a cafe racer.
If these guys had German accents, instead of British, BMW would have won.
Yup! about the size of it haha!
Next to the BMW the Triumph looks like something you would put on the tree lawn and have the trash men pick up.
You must be an expert then and I must bow to your'e knowledge haha!
By "traditional" styling, this bloke means "boring and outdated".
