    Excellent suggestion!
    If the glass is already broken, covering it with any sort of tape will help a lot in removing everything fast and safe.

    Good suggestions. In our iPad 2 tutorial the digitizer was broken.
    It was lots of off-camera fun removing the glass pieces with the box cutter.
    Best to do it over a garbage can, the glass is extremely sharp,
    you don;t want it laying around on your desk.

    Thank you!
    We made a point to make concise, straight-to-the-point tutorials, because quite often technical videos on UA-cam are not mindful of viewer's time. We are trying to combat that trend :)

    Hi, great you liked it.
    Yes the crystal of the 2 is very like of the 3, but the enchanted ribbon is different, so it wouldn't work directly.

    Thanks for the video!
    I have a question, when my ipad was dropped it fell first on the corner and bent the aluminum backing, the impact cracked the corner and has grown over time. Can you still replace the screen and digitizer and get a good fit with it bent?

  • @Laptopscreen
    @Laptopscreen  12 років тому

    Yup it will. In our iPad2 tutorial, which is identical glass, we removed it without any heating.

    Thank you so much for the "how to put it back together". After a few weeks of battling the company I ordered my replacement screen from after my iPad decided to jump from my lofted bed to the jagged desk chair below, it finally came in, and I can say this was one of the best tutorials for replacing the digitiser that I have seen. Usually videos just show you how to take the machine apart.

  • @Laptopscreen

    Doubt that the plastic clip is affecting it.
    Although we've noticed a quirk with iPads - when the LCD is not properly screwed in (not grounded) it can sometimes lose backlight. Inspect the LCD, wipe all metal edges with alcohol and cross your fingers after tightening the screws.
    Good luck!

    Yes, by it's merit, any strips of electronics appropriate double sided adhesive will work, but may need to be cut to size.

    In your video for ipad 2 screen replacement, you did not use a heat gun and it took alot more time and effort, would it have been as easy as in this video if you had used the heat gun or is there alot more adhesive to deal with in the ipad2

    Do you guys replace back covers for the I-Pad 3 as well? & if so how much would it be?

  • @Laptopscreen
    @Laptopscreen  11 років тому

    With a pair of tweezers, magnifying glass and a bucket of patience.
    Hopefully the plastic pivots are intact on that little pita latch (yes, hands on experience)
    The latch is not integral to the connector operation, the connection can be secured with scotch tape (as best as you can)

    Hmm, that does bring up an interesting point of where exactly does the Apple design happen?

    Usually when i replace glass, what i do is that i apply a whole lot of tape across the visible glass.. I've NOT done that a few times and ended up with a shard in my eye at one point, which is when i started doing it.

    I broke the plastic clip from the LCD where you slide in the film. Does that not allow the screen to turn on?

  • @Laptopscreen
    @Laptopscreen  11 років тому

    We only supply new digitizers with adhesive on them.
    We don't recommend disassembling the iPad if it's not broken.
    In this case, the original adhesive held up OK.

    Well noticed good friend!
    Some replacement parts indeed ship with-out the home button and the camera plate.
    However, parts purchased from our company do :)

    The screen / digitizer connector. I can't seem to flip it up.. I can't really see too well in the video.

  • @machrf1
    @machrf1 11 років тому

    There is much to leave on this video, for example you reuse the screen on hand. A repair requiring "Replacement of the digitizer" will not come with the button nor the camera clamp. These will have to be taken off of the old screen or bought new if damaged and repositioned on the new screen. This video does not mention these key aspects of a replacement.

  • @Laptopscreen
    @Laptopscreen  11 років тому

    Anything can and should be fixed.
    The repair will depend on how it was separated.
    If the cable was ripped - it can be rejoined with a bit of effort and ingenuity.
    If the cable was separated from the board, it can be soldered back on.
    If nether is possible, LCDs for iPad 3 go for $55.99

    depending on your break, this can be a pain in the ass! i suggest a box cutter, just be careful around the wifi antenna and it will make it easier than that flat tool they use.

  • @Laptopscreen
    @Laptopscreen  10 років тому

    It won't be a good fit with the bent corner.
    It is best to straighten it out with manual labor (pliers, file, screwdriver, sandpaper) to achieve the best fit. If the digitizer(glass) is not properly glued, there is a chance that it will come apart at the most inopportune time, and the extra dust on the inside may shorten the life of the device.
    Aluminum is fairly pliable, spend some extra time making the edge straight for the best quality repair.

  • @Laptopscreen
    @Laptopscreen  11 років тому +1

    As repairers, technicians and nerds, we definitely share the same sentiment.
    But as business people, cynics and realists we can see the logic in Apple's decisions.
    Either way, the direction of consumer electronics is clear - time to invest into epoxy dissolver ;)

    How much heat is your gun set to? Worried too much heat might affect motherboard, Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance!

    • @Laptopscreen
      @Laptopscreen  10 років тому

      The heat setting is quite relative - use your finger to make sure that the glass is warmed well - that's all. You shouldn't heat it past the point where you can't hold your finger against the glass comfortably.

    if you're going to do his, make sure you have a fine metal tool to prise the screen off. I bought a screen "with tools" and the tools were plastic and totally useless.

  • @Laptopscreen
    @Laptopscreen  11 років тому

    Yes, it would have been easier to use a heat gun for iPad2.
    Also, not using heat gun on this iPad3 would have been easier than iPad2.
    However in both cases we would prefer to use a heat gun now.
    (One of the main reasons to use a heat gun for the purposes of THIS tutorial was to not break that which is not broken :) )

    Shit, just broke the wifi antennae, is this game over or should i order a new one?

    • @Laptopscreen
      @Laptopscreen  10 років тому

      Game over? Nah, just another opportunity to learn something.
      We've wrecked a power/volume cable on our iPad2 tear down, just ordered the cable, removed extra bits, put the cable in, assembled back up - worked fine!
      Go to eBay or Amazon,
      Look up your iPad's model number i.e. A1416 + WiFi Antenna + Cable,
      and You're (almost) Done! ;)

    • @Laptopscreen
      @Laptopscreen  10 років тому

      Surprised to hear about the iPad3 Wifi antennae though - in our experience it separated much better compared to iPad2 - maybe make sure enough heat is applied in that area when doing the repair next time. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

  • @samirgunic
    @samirgunic 11 років тому

    Wow! This seems like a daunting and painful task. Why didn't they just put in a few screws on the back or something? That would be so much easier. Because you could use normal standardized tools like Philips screwdriver or a security Torx, or a Triwing driver to remove the God damn thing. There would be no need to invent new tools and methods to get to its guts. Like trying to re-invent the wheel God damn it...

  • @samirgunic
    @samirgunic 11 років тому

    Well... that's Apple for you. Every new product they release requires a new specialized tool! And not just one of them! They are really testing the human ability to make tools. It always requires creative thinking, for good and for worse... even if it means you have to use your hair drier for the job! Perhaps even your comb and tooth brush will prove useful. You have to look for tools in your bathroom and kitchen when you need to repair an Apple product, not in the toolbox.
