  • I last repaired this Game Boy Advance four years ago, but even though it’s been nothing but a display piece in that time, it’s again nonfunctional! Just like before, it won’t turn on at all. Could it be the switch? Could it be the capacitors? Watch along in my patented Sunday Quickie formula to find out!

My immediate thought was that it would the power switch, after battery leakage it’s the most common fault on those orig gameboy advances.
Inside that switch are a couple carbon contact lines, they oxidise over time, best not to ever use IPA on those contacts as they wear off easy. Use some good quality contact cleaner such as deoxit. If you’re extra handy with a soldering iron you can actually desolder the top metal plate from that switch to clean better and then resolder.. also if the switch is loose, while it’s hard to explain in text you can bend down the top metal to make it tighter 9theres probs UA-cam videos out there on that)
Also when dealing with corrosion from batteries or caps you want to let the white vinegar sit on the area for a good 5-10min then remove it all with ipa, like literally flood the areas you have vinegar on few times. Because the vinegar over time also will do they same damage battery acid or a electrolytic capacitors dielectric does. And that’s likely what has happened over those few years since you used it last.
Is highly unlikely it’s the capacitors on the gba
For ESR in-circuit testing do keep in mind depending on how the cap is connected to the rest of its circuit you can get false readings or weird reading.
Lastly as a fellow Aussie who repairs and restores vintage gaming consoles and computers alot ,i f you ever need any tips or tricks or just to get pointed in the right direction feel free to drop me message

Next time you're at jaycar grab yourself a can of contact cleaner. The amount of times contact cleaner has saved me is endless. Also a trick with your alligator clips. Put a pin or a needle in each one for probes.. They work well and get into tight places.

What's the difference (and advantage) between contact cleaner and IPA? Guess I should know since I once worked at Jaycar...

@@retrogameon Contact cleaner removes oxidisation and contact dust from contact breakdown. It also dries instantly. Like. Really instantly. If you spray the contact cleaner in a switch or a pot for example quickly flick the switch a bunch of times or turn the pot and the cleaner shines up the contact surfaces again without pulling it apart and cleans at the same time. Its handy stuff to have. Lasts forever. Comes with a straw nozzle so you can direct the spray to where you want it to go. Cuz its a spray can it gets good pressure behind it to spray/jet out the muck.
