  • Yes, you heard me. After a handful of CRTs over the last decade or so, I’m done. Using fantastic technology like the Retro Tink and the OSSC (Open Source Scan Converter) I don’t really see the need for these oversize TVs anymore. Sure, I won’t be able to play light gun games anymore… but I don’t care. Follow me on my journey to becoming CRT-less!

    I did not realise how blessed I was to receive a little 14-in SCART CRT from a family friend back in 2015. They had moved from the UK to Australia, and by 2015 their son had stopped using the PS2, so they had no use for it any more. If the opportunity arises, I'd recommend getting a 14 inch, they're so much easier to move and can fit into much smaller spaces. Also crazy that this video is how I find out there's an Ikea in Cannington lol

      Nice, what brand is the TV? I've always liked the little Sony PVMs you see around but I'm unsure if they come with SCART inputs.
      Also, that Cannington location isn't a full store. It's smaller and only for designing kitchens made to order and stuff like that.

      @@retrogameonThe TV is a Goodmans 1408. Obv not a PVM, but it has served me well in the last decade. just the one scart input tho, so there is some cable switching.
      It's funny to think about how long I spent just using a composite to scart converter before I knew any better

    I’m an older gamer who grew up with CRTs so I just can’t let them go, no matter how good scalers get playing classic consoles on an LCD looks off to me….got 6 CRTs in the collection at the moment….I guess that they can be a pain though especially when they have issues

    I mean its good . but would recommended to atleast 14" CRT to have as backup incase for lighting guns or do workaround some retro consoles. I remember my Mega Drive plugged with RGB Cable from UK one thing where everyone buys, after that I have issues with my Modern TV due of not accepting 240p (whereas RF cable or AV Cable accepts easily fine, weird),but i know its small but hey it works. so no need to have big fancy CRT TV to steal your space. I saw your previous where I commented there, You got nice small gaming room. looks like same exactly size as mine but ill use as Bedroom and PC work from home. if i moved out i definietly expand room as retro gaming room. modern in living room.

    Hey brother! I'm in an similar pickle myself. Having held onto a couple of CRTs (mostly for light gun games), I've fired mine up again and I've been a little conflicted. On one hand, interlaced games like Gran Turismo 3 look way better on my CRT than upscaled on my OSSC - though I could adjust my OSSC settings.
    On the other - the CRT experience is definitely not perfect. Like you said, they take up space and the image on a CRT isn't perfect either. Images are kinda flickery and can warp on the corners and my set has a little bit of ghosting . Standard for the aging hardware, I'm glad it's made it this far but at this point I'm wondering if it's worth it.
    However, I feel like if I'm ditching the CRT, I may as well build a mini PC and go full emulation. Why mess around with scalers, bespoke RGB cables, switchers, layers of menus + settings + adjustments for a significantly more simple experience with flexibility for enhancements (depending on the emulator)? I just don't know. I kind of feel like the CRT is what completes the experience.
    Hope that makes sense. Best to ya.

    Mines got a discolored band down the middle, but it's really only visible when there's like a black background or solid colors. I'll use it as long as it lets me, but I have a few extra stored in a corner, so I'll still be able to use a CRT for some time to come.

    I actually ordered a Retrotink 2X pro just last night. Popped up on ebay for $100 AUD couldn't resist.
    Last shot was funny. Give your writer a raise.

    I get this to be honest. I haven't turned mine on in a long time, these days if I'm going to play an old system it'll be through an OSSC. I am holding on to the CRT for lightgun games for sure though. Plus one day I would like to try gaming on it again just to see if I actually prefer it to the OSSC. Seeing as it has been many year I honestly don't know the answer!

    "stained....by me" Never heard that much pride in a sentence before. Nice!
    OK, a few minutes later, this just makes me smile. So funny. Thanks man.
    I hope you don't have the AC unit over cables or electronics for ever. Some times they drip drops of water.
    I guess that AC works really well lol.
    I like the new setup. I also like blue. The problem with the color is with the carpet, they don't go well together. But I would rather change the color of the carpet.
    Thanks for sharing man, enjoy your new cool setup. :)

      The aircon will only be wheeled in there when necessary. Its more permanent home is the office where it can't really drip onto anything.

    "I was told I could click and collect and pick it up from there right away - but I decided to wait" Translation: "You've gotta be kidding me, you're telling me after driving here that I need to drive another 3 quarters of an hour to 'pick it up now' - I'll pass". Then orders it anyway via click and collect online. I've done the exact same thing heh.
    Edit to add: The blue colour ended up looking great. It reminds me of the 80's random colour all over the place vibe instead of the current boring grey/white/black everything.

    I dumped my two from shed both closing in on 70kg each as well. Only last weekend Panasonic and Grundig both top of the range in their day...

      Do you use a CRT at all for gaming?

    I never like crt's to begin with. They can look amazing but they always gave me a headache. The static sound, inability to adjust the brightness during the day, the flickering... Ugh

      Yeah, I feel people don't mention that whine very often. It also gives me a headache and causes issues when filming.

      this is an interesting point, I have 3 children and they all hate the noise the tv makes before anythings even on, the second i press the power button they go mad until i turn it off, they can hear a frequency that i cant apparently

    Ah, you’re in Perth too! I moved here end of last year. Haven’t enjoyed the super hot days - I’ve never seen our energy bill so high before, and thats with solar!

    • @retrogameon
      @retrogameon  4 місяці тому +1

      It's been a pretty bad summer too, even by Perth standards. I had planned to buy that AC last summer but it was so mild I didn't need to!

    • @JarrydHall
      @JarrydHall 4 місяці тому

      Haha I bet it’s getting a workout now! Good you have something to get you through the hot days. I bet the old consoles don’t appreciate the high ambient temperatures either. On a job a few years ago a mobile data rig went though a heatwave with no AC and one of the machines wasn’t ever the same after that haha.

    Забавно, что я в маленькой комнате 15 квадратных метрах, разместил 36 дюймовый ЭЛТ Sony и 55 дюймовый Panasonic c десятками консолей, а людям живущим в частном доме с гаражом, не хватает места 😅
    SCART разветвитель необходимая вещь, обязательно покупай, я без него очень мучался.
