Let's test the battery life, the screen brightness and speed, and see if it’s really so different from the last version of iPad pro. So I got one. When I first read the specs my reaction was to fill the space with more battery rather than make it so thin. We don't need it thin. Apple has a fetish for thin for some reason. Well, my M1 Mac was thicker, for more battery, and I liked that. I can use it all day without a problem (for the most part). I go to the coffeeshop without bringing my charger. I used to have to always bring a charger with me. So back to the iPad Pro. I got it on Sunday. Now it's Friday, and it's been unplugged the whole time. This morning I plugged it in again when it was showing 30% battery. I haven't used it a whole lot. Mostly an hour or two a day of watching videos and surfing the net. Still going nearly a week doing that without plugging it in is impressive.
One note about the thinness: the pencil is about 4mm wider than the iPad Pro. That's right. The iPad Pro is thinner than the pencil that sticks to it. So is that a problem? When you lay the iPad down, does the pencil get knocked off? Well, I usually have the pencil attached only when I'm transporting things in my backpack, so no, not really, except that the pencil likely falls off in the backpack or somehow gets filed into a different pocket when placed in the backpack. But back to the thinness. One pet peeve of mine is the cameras on Apple devices. They project outward, so when you lay the device down, you are resting it on the camera. As a photographer, this is anathema to me. The device should be thick enough that the front surface of the camera is recessed. Does that make the device bulkier? Sure. So what? A few mm bulkier is no big deal, and that buys me protection of the camera.
I have a 1st gen 11 inch iPad Pro from 2018....I was waiting for that OLED screen to update, and now I'm watching all the reviews while waiting for it to come tomorrow.

So were you comparing the 2022 12.9 Mini LED screen in the sunlight comparison? Because the NITS are the same. I ask because the 11” M2 2022 Pro screen wasn’t nearly as nice as the 2022 M2 12.9”.
Are the speakers the same as the gen 5 and gen 5, 12.9”?

Thanks for the review, decided to upgrade my iPad Pro 12.9 Gen 5 to the 13.0. Namely because of battery life, screen quality and brightness. Choose the 256gb WiFi version. I bought this principally for personally use (reading, videos) but also does double duty at work for marking up design drawings for collaboration purposes. I do agree this is more notebook adjacent for me vs iPhone, but I would like to buy an AirBook or MacBook and move on from my old windows PC. Maybe this could be used as an extended screen-that would be neat.

The main difference I would expect going from the old mini led display to the new tandem oled display is the dramatic reduction if not total removal of the blooming effect than could be present on mini led. Is that the case? And also thanks for the battery test it seems the new one has better battery life for now

Oh dear. I am going to come clean with you (but keep it a secret)...I was born in England and live in Scotland and so I probably don't fully qualify as being a Scot but I do love living Scotland. Yesterday (For my birthday YAY) I have place my order for the iPad Pro 13" 1TB Regular Glass to replace my existing iPad (Wait for it) yes, to replace my iPad Pro 12.9" 1st Generation 2015.
All the comparison videos all compare the M1, M2 to the new M4 but having the 1st Generation (2015) iPad, my expectations are I will probably see night and day differences ;)

Great review, thank you. I have the 12.9 inch M1 with the keyboard and pencil. I use Final Cut Pro for the iPad, Pages, Numbers, Kindle etc. I would love better software to make use of the M series chips. At this point I am inclined to get the 11" M4 because lighter and a touch smaller makes it easier to travel with.

I was going to run that Final Cut Pro test, but I dont want to waist that first month free on version 1 and will wait until they release version two. Sorry. I am curious to see how Final Cut Pro 2 stacks up again luma fusion and davinkcia. I want to see more macOS on the iPad Pro personally. I updated for more storage, the brighter screen outdoors (thanks for proving that I made a good move) and polarized any direction is great. Battery does seem better, looking forward to that. I guess I’ll find out more later today. As for the anti-reflect nano glass I just ordered one of those paper like magnetic screens so I can use it outside, and remove it when inside. Thanks for the review.

How come the m4 on the right is supposed to be 13 inch but looks smaller then m2?
The new magic keyboard is deeper because of the extra row, so that screen is pushed a little further back so I guess it might look a little smaller
I just received my new iPad Pro 11" 1T yesterday. I want an iPad that is my main computer and editing device. I really hope they enhance the OS to take advantage of all this power. That's why I'm paying a MACbook price for it. FYI, I chose the 11" over the 13" because it's simply more portable. Easily fits in a standard sized medium handbag, backpack or tote. Once you're at 13" it doesn't. Thanks for the video!

LCDs have polarizers built in, it’s how they work to block/allow light from the backlight layer. OLED emits light directly from the pixels and doesn’t use a polarizer layer. That’s why your polarized glasses conflicted with the older iPad model.
Great review! I'm torn between this iPad Pro and the MacBook Pro for video editing since they seem to be in a similar price range. I'm doing video editing on a 4 year old MacBook Pro and the fans are kicking on, so it's definitely time for me to make a decision!

I will say on the polarization most screens aren't too friendly with sunglasses unless you tilt your head/phone 45 degrees because your screen has the same polarization filter as glasses. If screens weren't somewhat polarized, glossy displays would pick up way too much glare.
I'm guessing that because of Apple using 2 layers for OLED, they can have them running in opposite directions mitigating the problem. They are the first to do this dual layer OLED so this could finally be the tech that works with polarized glasses.

Battery life is very important to me the full chip seems overkill/overrated for the price required to get it. So I’m just curious if having 1 less performance core nets you any battery life gain.
My M4 iPad Pro 13 with 1 TB and apple pencil Pro will be here tomorrow. I have worn out my M1 iPad Pro with 1 terabyte. It's been overheating and the battery don't last long because I use it on an average of 8 to 12 hours a day for my business. I bring it everywhere and it's slowing down. So it's time for an upgrade and I love that it has a new OLED screen. I recently picked up the Samsung S9 Ultra with 1tb and the screen is phenomenal on that tablet but the color accuracy is not as good as the iPad Pro. It's no big deal at the tablet is thinner I could care less it's going into a case. But I do hope the tablet cools better like it says with the thermals. But I'm looking forward to the new Apple Pro pencil for photo editing and video editing. But it will be nice that it is brighter and when I'm out on photo shoots with my clients I like to show them the photos at the end and sometimes when it's real sunny out it's hard for them to see. But I do plan on posting a video on how the M4 iPad Pro 13 compares to my M1 iPad Pro 12.9 and my Samsung S9 Ultra
I’m just waiting for my 13”, 1 TB with Nano screen to arrive later this month. My keyboard shows up tomorrow. I’ll get the pencil later. I’m actually moving form the M2 to the M4 because of the features. I use Resolve mostly because until now you could only edit once you import files into the iPad. I was not going to do that. Now, We can work a project with the files still on an external drive so I may use FCP again but probably side by side to Resolve. I also work in Photoshop as well. Now we have the power, Apple give us a powerful iPad OS!! Also Developers give us apps worthy of the hardware. Oh Yeah, the iPad Pro is my main work machine (yep, I do have an iMac as well.).

Great review - I’ve decided to get the M4 on the basis that I’m just doing too much work on my iPhone and want more screen real estate. I’m with you on that macOS would be ideal on the iPad - who knows…

4:12 It may seem trivial at first being thinner and lighter...but if you have experienced putting ipad and magic keyboard on your lap which easily topples over, this solves that

The M4 benchmarks are almost double compared to the M2, with the new multi cores. Meaning it can process graphics quicker and easier.

Yes, I would love if the iPad and the Mac merged and all the apps like pixlemator and Final Cut from Mac and procreate and procreate dreams from iPad merged so I only needed one device.
yours is the only one i found that actually tested the battery life. All those tech guys have got dozens of ipads and they somehow forgot to do so.

Well, I tested my M4 iPad Pro 13 with one terabyte against my M1 12.9 iPad Pro with one terabyte and uploaded the same nine gigs of raw image files and the M4 was two minutes faster and uploading images to Lightroom. Then I took the same nine gigs of image files and converted them into JPEG and exported them And the M4 was over three minutes and 30 seconds faster. I am truly impressed. Even all the functions in Lightroom just move so much smoother and almost instantaneously. You can remove blemishes off of my clients faces and buffer for a second or two like the M1 iPad Pro. And let me tell you about that screen. That OLED screen is beautiful. I do like the new Apple Pencil Pro. It’s taking me a little bit to get used to, but I’m learning it’s new features.

But the switch to landscape theory saved you at the end. iPad sales are down, so maybe finally turning it into a yoga/MS Surface whatever, running native Mac OS makes sales sense to them eventually… but I’ll believe it when I see it. If it does happen, we’re probably looking at an across the board FCP subscription model too - nooooo!!!
Yes that’s all that a lot of us have been wanting and asking Apple for years to implement. Why not give us macOS on the iPad pros and leave iPadOS for the non pro iPads.

Pricing is crazy . Just get the m2 pro 12.9! It’s like 900$ and much better than the air ones . I really don’t understand how someone can buy the air for 600/800 $ , no logic ! The new pros are too pricy . Just get m2 pro 🤩😍
