Kansas is one of the best Prog Rock bands from the USA. Still out there jamming. RIP Violinist Robby Steinhardt.
'miracles out of nowhere'
perfect bottom line!
Kansas and Styx oooooo boy
And then there was Tool
not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Proves R&R Hall of Fame is an absolute turd of a joke.
THE WALL!!! From Kansas is a masterpiece...this bloke can SANG!!! WHOOOOOEEEEE...
Totally agree! I’m a singer and love to drive in my car and sing along to that and the entire Leftoverture album to this day. Bought the album when it was first released back in the 70’s.
@@IDriveAnAudi the melodies he sings on The Wall are some of the most beautiful I've ever heard...
@@IDriveAnAudi I bought that album when it first came out, when I was just a teenager. I loved it then and love it just as much now!
Please, more Kansas. Kansas is a ridiculously brilliant overlooked band. They are criminally underrated, due to people not ever hearing their stuff aside from a few radio tunes. Please react to some of their non radio songs. They have so many great songs. Here are a few to add to your reactions list. Journey From Mariabronn, Aperu/Death of Mother Nature Suite, Song For America (full album version, not the radio edit), Lamplight Symphony, Incomrudo - Hymn to The Atman, Icrurus - Borne of Wings of Steel, The Pinnacle, Miracles Out of Nowhere, Magnum Opus, Closet Chronicles, Sparks of The Tempest, Nobody's Home, Hopelessly Human. Okay, gonna shut up now, haha. You guys will be amazed at the musicianship of this band. Simply an amazing group of songwriters and musicians.
Another great song from this album is "Portrait (He Knew)".
Every song on this album is great. If I don't pull out one or two songs on their own then I have to listen straight through. I can't shuffle or I just don't feel right-- messes with my brain. It's definitely one of my top 20 albums.
exactly my first thought. 👍
The remixed version by original producer Jeff Glixman sounds even better, imo. The live rendition from the incredible Two for the Show rocks harder with extended guitar soloing towards the end.
Both musically and lyrically, this song goes well with "Come Sail Away" from Styx.
Yes. Just as Carry On Wayward Son goes well with Renegade.
They toured a lot with each other back in the day.
Come Sail Away........to the Point of Know Return............
Per Songfacts Written by Kansas drummer Phil Ehart, violinist Robby Steinhardt, and frontman Steve Walsh, this was the first track from the band's fifth album, Point Of Know Return, released in October 1977. It was included in the album at the last moment, but became one of their most popular songs, still getting airplay on Classic Rock radio. >>
The lyric is about a seafaring journey, with our hero joining a crew and heading into the ocean. He wonders when the ship will reach the point of no return, when there will be no going back.
Kansas set themselves apart on this song by arranging it like an orchestra, with interplay between violin, guitar and synthesizer. Layering vocals on top, it gave them a signature sound.
"He wonders when the ship will reach the point of no return, when there will be no going back."
Hence the song title using "know", as in when will he know is the point of no return. Yup!
Brad, your hilarious!
and, of course, Steve Walsh has a great voice. I think one of the greatest in rock. Very under rated.
And, btw, Robby Steinhardt passed away last year. RIP Robby. You are missed.
Absolutely! More Kansas! Can't wait for you to move past the Three Big Hits and do some of the early, more prog-rock stuff; Robbie Steinhardt's violin really shines there.
All I ask is "Song for America" and "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)" for a start. I'm not calling for "Lamplight Symphony" straight away.
Yes, this is one of the rare bands with two sets of keyboards (Steve Walsh, bouncing around, and Kerry Livgren, smooth and in control; on some songs, Kerry plays rhythm guitar instead). It makes for interesting instrumentation.
And, yeah…a certain amount of blow. Not just Walsh; bassist Dave Hope was doing $10,000 worth every month, it's said. (Eventually Kerry became a born-again Christian, convinced Dave to get straight and join him…but that broke up the band, because the others didn't want to do that kind of music. Oh, well.)
Played this album til it wore OUT back in the 70's! Have replaced my vinyl copies several times over the years, and of course moved onto cd's later on. Great album start to finish! This side one is one of the best album sides I've ever heard. This record makes up a large chunk of the music soundtrack of my youth! This is the album from which came another slightly famous song of theirs that I believe you guys reacted to already; DUST IN THE WIND.
One of my favorite bands in the 70's, always had them in the car, and on vinyl, and one of the reason's I got into being a rock jock on FM radio after getting out of the army, made a 30 year of playing "my" rock to the huddled masses...Rock ON!!!
Gamdalf679, me too!! The instrumentation, lyrics and that golden voice. One of the very best!!
Same here!
Brad & Lex, you’ll love their “Play The Game Tonight”!! John Elefante on lead vocals.
Or Perfect lover🤘
Or Fight with Fire
Song for America.
Great song, I still have the old 45 record of that one.
"Windows" is another highlight with Elefante
Closet Chronicles would be a interesting song to react to (same band same album)
The lyric is about a seafaring journey, with our hero joining a crew and heading into the ocean. He wonders when the ship will reach the point of no return, when there will be no going back. (from SongFacts)
The earlier and deep tracks are the way to go
The Wall
Cheyenne Anthem
Song for America
Lamplight Symphony
Miracles out of Nowhere
(Studio versions of course)
Great musically talented band
I've never heard an official reason for it being "know", but a lot of bands had fun with wordplay in their album titles around this time: Rush had the album Moving Pictures where the album art literally showed movers transporting paintings, and REO Speedwagon had the all-time classic title "You Can Tune a Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish".
Know = Jesus...
They believe, the Wayword Son is Christ...
This band is high up there with my top favorites. They got many great tunes and great albums. I think this is about God revealing himself to the point where you know, and you cannot unknow. Thanks, cats.
Icarus, song for America, hold on, he knew, closet chronicles…just a few songs to discover. My favorite band. No one can sing like Steve Walsh. Untrained and fing amazing!!
I saw Kansas during their Leftoverture tour in a small Midwestern town where the ice skating rink was a summer concert venue. Probably 1977 and I was in High School playing lead guitar in a teenage rock band. All the instruments that you don’t know what they are are analog synthesizers by the way. The concert was excellent!
You guys should react to more Kansas…
"Song for America", "Icarus (Born on Wings of Steel)", "The Wall", "Journey From Mariabronn", "Portrait (He Knew)", "Play the Game Tonight", "Hold On", "Miracles out of Nowhere", "Reason to Be", "I Can Fly", "Silhouettes in Disguise"
🎸🤘
Don't forget the rocking "Fight Fire with Fire".
You forgot Angels Have Fallen and Mysteries and Mayhem/The Pinnacle.
One of my all time favorite bands, their catalog is incredible.
So many fantastic songs, it's criminal that they aren't in the Hall of Fame.
Kansas was such a great original rock band with amazing songs and musicians. Great reaction.
Portrait , He Knew off the same album is a strong suggestion here.
Again with a drug reference….just stop
Not even their best song, and neither were Carry On Wayward Son or Dust In The Wind, their deep cuts are where the excellence really is, a top ten(or a bit more) songs from a longtime(1975) fan
The Wall
On The Other Side
Hopelessly Human
Journey From Mariabronn(the version from the live album " Two For The Show ")
Cheyenne Anthem
Icarus-Borne On Wings Of Steel
Mysteries And Mayhem/The Pinnacle(two songs meant to be one)
Apercu/Death Of Mother Nature Suite(two songs meant to be one)
Song For America
Curtain Of Iron
No One Together
Miracles Out Of Nowhere
RIP Robby Steinhardt
🎻
Great song Love Kansas!
KANSAS:
"Fight Fire With Fire"
"Play The Game Tonight"
Check out Portrait He Knew, Glimpse Of Home, Got To Rock On, Relentless, Hold On, Stand Beside Me, and All I Wanted by Kansas.
Kansas is a band of very good musicians. Each one of them was a master. Their song writing was legendary. What always blows my mind is it was in Kansas. Not New York or California but Kansas.
Like the blurb on the cover for their first album said "from one of the most unmusical environments imaginable" or something along those lines. Lent the album to my granddaughter and of course she never returned it, so can't check for the exact quote.
I got a granddaughter that has been checking out my albums. It actually fun watching her discover stuff we have known about for decades.
@@ALD56 Ha! You lent the album and didn't get it back You reached the point of no return.
@@iluvj50 Yeah, but I know where she lives.
A D Funny, AD was the name of Kerry’s next band. They were actually very good!
I’ve seen them live 18 times; they call us “Wheatheads.” Best band ever!
I remember bringing Kansas "Leftoverature" album to show and tell back in elementary school during the mid 70s haha.....Kansas is still one of my all time favorite bands.
Yes! Another band that came to town every 6 months and always rocked out best LPS were Leftoverture and Point of know return not a bad song on them
magnum opus and miracales out of no where give them a shot.
The "point of no return" is the point where it's faster to continue on, rather than going back. Such as when you're traveling in a circle, or sailing around the earth. But this song is "point of *know* return". Which seems to be related to returning with knowledge you didn't have when you left.
When the point of Knowing Returns.
Miracles out of nowhere.
You need to hear , Dust in the wind, it's great 👍.
His voice is like a trumpet. Incredible vocal ability. A consummate belter. One of my biggest influences.
Kiss- War Machine
Try "Miracles Out of Nowhere" next. It will be a chance to see Robby Steinhart sing lead as well.
Kansas the Wall is a great song.
Check out Sparks of the Tempest from the same album. The lyrics speak volumes about current times.
This song was about a tragedy that happened on a previous tour. Kids were killed in a car accident after a Kansas concert. They wrote this song!
Ahhh! Another draught of cool water on a hot summer’s day. Kansas is one of my favorite bands. I never needed drugs, I had groups like Kansas to transport me. “Closet Chronicles “ please! Fun fact: the album cover this song is from has a ship falling off the Earth.
Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide
Know return means a return to knowledge when many may have forgotten that knowledge is the road to true compassion.
My favorite concert opening was the way Kansas opened their show when I saw them in 83 at the Spectrum in Philly. I still don't really know how they did it. Initially, an empty stage, with four stools lined up at the front center edge. An apparent string quartet, in formal attire, file out and take their seats. They begin tuning up, as if to begin playing. At this point, we're wondering, "What the hell is this?"
Suddenly, we're blinded by flashpots, the stage is hidden by smoke. As we're blinking our eyes recovering from the flash, and the smoke begins to clear from the stage, we hear the opening guitar notes, and then see Kansas on stage, playing away, and no sight or sign of the apparent "string quartet" or their instruments. Fastest stage change I've ever seen.
All of the so gs others mentioned are great. I'll add "Song for America".
One of the best voices in rock.
I just love Kansas and their lead fiddle player...
one of the best bands ever........................ period
Icarus/Born on Wings of Steel!!!!
Kansas released their 4th album "Leftoverture" in October 1976 (it launched them into the spotlight). If that wasn't enough to fill the airwaves Boston had released their first self titled album, "Boston" just a few months earlier in August 1976! Not only did you have to have both of these monster albums on vinyl but the cassettes as well for cruising in the car!!! "The Wall" and ""Miracles Out Of Nowhere" are Kansas must hears!!!
Greatest band of all time...
Still recording new music.
Always good to see you both, hello feom Brazil!
Great song.
The violin note at 3:09 is epic.
True musicians! They had it all in spades. Grew up with them and loved every minute of it. Thanks for reviewing them.
Love your reactions! Lex, has there been a song that you don't like yet? Love to watch you youngsters review all these hair bands.. That I remember getting to know for the first time. Amazing how the talent evolved in the 80's! I don't know? But music seemed to really have great musicians and song writers evolving during that era. I don't think you have reacted to my favorite band yet? But if you get a chance? Could you please react to ( Dokken ) " In my dreams " you might know it from " Nightmare on Elm Street " ? Thank you for your wonderful reactions I enjoy them so much!
Another fantastic song from Kansas.
the power of that lead singer's voice ...wow
Miracles Out of Nowhere
Point of NO return.....lol
The irony of a band named after a flat, landlocked state doing songs about seafaring.
This band had some amazing albums.
Great reaction. I encourage you to listen to "The Wall" by Kansas. Beautiful song. Thanks!
Lex you have the
Ability understand the 70s music 🎶 great 😂😂
I loved this when it first came out. Honestly, although I have the album, I never realized the spelling in the title. It's a song about sailing but it also came out about the same time as a movie called "Vanishing point" that ends with the guy and his muscle car slamming into the blades of two bulldozers parked on the highway. He is topping out at about 110 and the cops have been trying to stop him for several hours, so they put the bulldozers right over the crest of a hill. He hit his point of no return as well.
It's the fact a long time ago, sailors thought you sailed till you fell off the edge of the world. Because some ships never came back, lost at sea to storms.
Point of “know” return was to make the song more profound.
"The Wall"
I can't believe I never noticed, before they
mentioned it: The Point of KNOW Return.
MIRACLES OUT OF NOWHERE -doc about the band-pretty awesome
Phil Ehart--sadly underrated drummer--his snare KILLS...the way he goes to that snare punch is perfection...think of Carry on...(bass drum intro) Da Da Da Da (snare punch)
🤘 🤘 can't even express how appreciative I am of their music.
You have to listen to 5he whole album. In the 70s we didn’t play songs. We played albums. THE BEST CONCERT I ever went to!
React to; "Stand On Your Own" - Joe Torono (Prod by Paul Gilreath)
"No Easy Way Out" - Robert Tepper
Lex's fallback when she has no idea==="It's about drugs." Usually a reliable guess, but as far as I know, not in this case. Love you guys! ❤❤
Pay no attention to the video....it was enhanced well after the song came out....purely for promotional and TV purposes.......to me, the title and song are about "Once you know better, there's no turning back!"
Ever wonder why it's Know and not no? Love Kansas..I'm a bit biased since they're my home town band!! Just got to the part where you touched on the same question..Maybe one day I'll have the opportunity to ask Kerry...
My daughter at 10 years old deliberately asked something she knew I’d say No to, and would not stop asking, after going around and around with her, in exasperation I said quite forcefully “what part of no don’t you understand?” Her response after putting her best cute face on was “why is the K silent?” Just a play on words.
This guy has one powerful voice and this is a good song for sure
The song starts with a metaphor about sailing away. Same applies to flying.Point of no return or Point of Safe Return (PSR) means when you have enough fuel or supplies to return where you came from. If you go past that point you have to commit to the journey and can't turn back Use to play this song, when I worked in Antarctica the last day before the start of winter and the last plane would leave in February and no further planes till end of August.
Point of know
Return was my favorite Kansas song 😊😊😊😊
Memories of this music coming from my middle brother's room. Fantastic. My youngest brother was a member of the Kiss army (not really a fan). Love your channel!
The 1st arena rock concert I was allowed to go to with friends was Kansas Leftoverture. Lots of substances. I was 16. I had been with momma to all sorts of county music concerts before though.
I seen those guys live back in the 70s when I was a little kid at the theme park Six Flags in the St. Louis area. As a little kid I was entranced by there musical virtuosity. Then to top it off after the show I got to ride the Screamin' Eagle rollercoaster twice in ten minutes when usually you had to stand in line for an hour just to get on it..........
The song Point of Know Return is a seafaring song. It means the sailors Know when they reach the point of no going back.
Great album! I remember this song well from 1977. I was 15 then and I went out and bought the album to hear the rest of the album. Dust in the Wind was another song from the album. A little depressing, though.
I got one you will 💕 and I'm sure alot of people will agree ,you have to the video and Watch Steve Perry sing Journey Mother Father!
Their debut album came out in my freshman year of college and it was fantastic. I was walking up 13th Street on the UF campus one afternoon when this bus went by that just said "Kansas" on the front of the bus. At first I thought it odd, because buses usually had their destination city listed on the front, not a state. But it was the band's tour bus; they were playing a concert that night in Gainesville! I noticed as it got closer that the guys were all gathered up near the front of the bus looking at all the college coeds as they passed.
One of the best bands in the entire world. I became a huge fan after learning guitar, appreciating their music on another whole level. Saw them live in about 2000 or so, and they were phenomenal.
One of the greatest songs ever. But if you continue to do that shadow video so you don’t get blocked I will stop watching you
They have a song from one of their later albums which is actually really fantastic. In so many ways. It's called, He Knew.
Hilarious. They formed and were from the town of Topeka only about 25 miles west of me. A roommate in college who was an audio file had a couple of their old amps that he used in various ways. He'd grown up in topeka.
Kansas surprised the hell out of everyone when they appeared. Nobody expected complex progressive rock to come out of that part of the country.
about 30 yrs ago I watched Steve Walsh snort a line 12" long. Handed the straw to my friend and said the rest is for you 2. No shit.
My Favorite Kansas song !
Saw them in the 70’s when it was Styx & Kansas as far as the American Bands were concerned !😀
I think Lex put Kansas on her playlist. She gets so excited when they're on.
I'm not sure where you got the video footage but the sound quality is poor. It doesn't do the song any justice. If you can find another version You can have a better experience.
Not everything was about sex and drugs. A lot was but not everything.
Kansas was my first concert back in 1980 and one of my all time favorites!!
I seem to recall the album cover for this album depicting a wooden sailing ship about to go off the edge of a flat Earth, if that helps understand the Point of No Return.
