I remember my first time hearing this album. Sitting in my room with my headphones on, looking at the album cover and reading the inner sleeve. I was 13 and I was hooked on Kansas from that day on. Still rocking with them today!! HAIL WHEATHEADS!!!!
Closet Chronicles, not closest. The late Robby Steinhardt was one of the most underrated violin/vocalists of the seventies. Each one of the first six albums (presumably the set does not include Monolith) are all essential in my opinion. Love the channel and your approach to music Jim.
Wow! Took the entire Leftoverture album and one half of the next album for you to mention “He’s got a real good voice, this guy”. The guy was one of the top five vocalists at the time. Robbie, the violinist is the other guy that sings lead sometimes and mostly harmonized with him. Glad to see you discovered what I prefer to call classical rock, rather than progressive. Classical, not classic rock, though it’s also classic rock. The keyboardist/guitarist Kerry Livgren was the mastermind behind this band but it’s the input from all the members that made this band.
I learned about gambling at a church fair when I was a kid trying to win this album when it 1st came out. I blew all my quarters on the "Big Six" wheel and watched someone else take it home. My favorite Kansas is Leftoverture. Cheers Jim!
Hey Jim! I have seen Kansas several times in concert going back to 1978. My favorite show was when they opened for YES!! Incredible show. Both bands were at their best that night!! Kansas ROCKS!!!!!🎵🎼🎶👍😎
Great album for the bands 5th studio output. (Kansas, Song for America, Masque, Leftoverture). Their next release was their first live album Two for the Show. The 30th anniversary release of TFTS is an expanded version of the original release. Treat yourself to this gem, as it is the original line up at their prime.
Such a wonderful album. It is part of the soundtrack of my life. It was played repeatedly. How many heavy(ish) bands can you think of who incorporated violin regularly and well? So much great stuff in their discography. Some say this is their second best album, but for top to bottom quality, I submit it is their best.
It's not quite Leftoverture, but it's good. I love seeing Jim do full album reactions. Would love to see him do Heart - Dreamboat Annie! That album is surprisingly quite proggy.
Nothing wrong with a fade out from time to time. Live this Chronicles ends with a very staccato fanfare, and Point has a definitive ending. Fade outs can be very effective.
Aha another Jim and me coincidence strikes....was listening to several Kansas albums including this AND I have all 5 in exactly the same set!!!🤗 After 4th go of just about all 5 albums I've really tuned in to them. Love the classic albums sets...got loads of them. They all provide great intros to many famous and overlooked artists. Also got Joan Armatrading set this year and it's also amazing. 👍👍👍
I've been a Kansas fan since 74, my favorite band! 1. Leftoverture 2. Point Of Know Return 3. Song For America, 4. Masque 5. Kansas 6. Audio Visions 7. Absence Of Presence 8. Prelude Implicit 9. Vinyl Confessions 10. Monolith. Power was ok, Steve Morse meh, Billy Grier was a good replacement for Dave Hope on Bass, I think this is where Steve Walsh started to have issues with his voice. I liked David Ragsdale on violin, but Robbie Steinhardt was the best R.I.P. Rich Williams and Phil Ehart are the only originals left. Rich and Phil are probably in their 70's, I don't know if they have enough left in the tank for another album and tour. I would love to see them do a tour where the play songs from every album and have maybe 1 or 2 breaks, I'd love that! I also love what Kerry, Dave, Warren, Michael, and Dennis did with AD! Time Line, Art Of The State, Reconstructions, and Prime Mover are all superb! In my opinion, I would give Leftoverture 5 stars, Point Of Know Return 4.5 stars, great album!
Solid from beginning to end. American prog. So few bands in this country that played and created progressive music as the best of British and Scofizh bands had done in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s!
Good evening Jim, Back to my teenage years when I heard this album for the first time. It’s a good to great album. Dust in the wind is the highlight for me.
'Portrait (He Knew)' per Wiki: "The inspiration for the song came from Kerry Livgren's admiration for Albert Einstein". Also per Wiki 'Closet Chronicles' is "a Howard Hughes allegory".
This album works well as an introduction to Kansas. There are several earlier albums I like better than this one, but this is still pretty great. Top notch musicians all! I sense a lot of affinity with the Gentle Giant of the same era. Complicated compositions.
I think Portrait (He Knew) is a great track, that reviewer needs his ears clearing out ! I remember Steve Walsh (vocals, keys) singing for Steve Hackett solo album "Please Don't Touch" released around the same time. "Closet Chronicles" is probably my favourite track.
Kansas are prog, no question (The keyboards plus tempo and time signature changes prove this), but are they great prog? I'm still not convinced. Steve Walsh, excellent singer though he is, fits snuggly in the classic rock genre and 'grounds' the music too much where Jon Anderson would make it soar, Peter Hammill would drag it to the depths and Peter Gabriel would take it who knows where (Willow Farm probably) I really don't like criticising Kansas as they might well be the best American Prog band - the Prog corner says so below and he knows! - but my British ears look for something a little different. I suspect a UK poll would be fairly different from a US one. Good record though.

"He's got a great voice this guy ...." said millions of people who first heard the brilliance of Steve Walsh

My favourite album of all time . Musically perfect
I'm loving hearing this again. And I think Portrait (He Knew) is a masterpiece.
I learned about gambling at a church fair when I was a kid trying to win this album when it 1st came out.

Huh! What a story!

I saw that tour, across the river from Philly, in Camden NJ. Great performance from both bands.
Hey Jeff, thanks buddy…. Hope you’re ok.
I saw them my senior year of college in 1976 in a 5000 seat music hall, fantastic show,
Great album for the bands 5th studio output. (Kansas, Song for America, Masque, Leftoverture).

Saw Kansas at the fair for free, it was an incredible performance, and a great time was had!
I wore out several vinyl copies of this album as a teenager.
Dat spider's very spidey!

The greatest of all American bands!!!
They are good
👍😎
Hmmm... we'll find out in a week's time!
I know a lot of these songs, but can't remember listening to the full album in one go before. No time like the present.
It's not quite Leftoverture, but it's good. I love seeing Jim do full album reactions. Would love to see him do Heart - Dreamboat Annie! That album is surprisingly quite proggy.

Dream Theater covered Paradox from this album in concert. There is a recording of it on UA-cam. Look up it up!
No matter what album you listen the there musician always comes thru.......k
KANSASFOREVER.......
I just bought a copy of Leftoverture.....great band.
Song for America is a must, if you love Kansas

They are certainly a brilliant value-centric way to get the music! I’ve also got loads.
You can really hear the Kansas influence on the flower kings in my opinion

To hear an American band from the 70s who really DID sound like Yes, you need to listen to Starcastle!
Beautiful album cover. Decent album. I like Leftoverture and Song for America better, but it has its moments.
Me too though this is up there too.
Seems like we got a similar ranking😊
@@rudolfbecker4313 🙂
Nice choice of album Jim. I do like Kansas
👍😎
I’m starting to!
Solid from beginning to end. American prog. So few bands in this country that played and created progressive music as the best of British and Scofizh bands had done in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s!
Kansas are a great American progressive rock band who put out several fantastic albums in the seventies…Enjoy the journey..
Ha ha! Great fade out!
Good evening Jim,
Back to my teenage years when I heard this album for the first time.
It’s a good to great album. Dust in the wind is the highlight for me.
Hi Will, german radio played it to death, I still switch stations when it's played😅
@@rudolfbecker4313 hi Rudi,
The same in the Netherlands 😅

If you were a kid playing dungeons and dragons in 1980 this album was unbelievable.
Question: how come some channels can play music in their videos but others if they do it they get copyright strikes?!
How do you like "Kansas" now ?
