Firstly, the US launched the Korean War which killed at least 20 per cent of the population with 3 cities being completely destroyed. If the Koreans became paranoid, there is a reason. There is no indication in this interview that the cruelty used by the 5th Brigade was taught by the Koreans. In fact there is every indication that Gukurahundi began after Mnangagwa ha made an agreement with the apartheid government and General Sir Edward Jones became commander of the British forces in Zimbabwe. The Koreans trained but did not deploy the 5th Brigade.. Perrance Shiri was rewarded with a scholarship to the Royal College of Defence Studies by te British.

As a white Policeman I had Mr Nkomos house in Pelindaba under my Security watch. We were always respectful towards each other and was in fact friends with some of his Family and top men. We witnessed the rage between Zanu and Zapu during the Entumbane time and realised then that had Zipra (Or ZAPU) and Smiths Government joined forces we would have had a different Zimbabwe today. A pity Mr Nkoma chose to support Mugabe as it was only a question if time before old tribal hatreds would emerge and the shona would use their power to take down the Ndebele and any opposition. Mugabes election was won only on a numbers game, thats all, 80% Shona and 20% Ndebele. Doesnt take a genius to have seen that from the begining. A united Government under Nkomo, Muzorewa and Smith would and could have build a Fantastic country for us all. RIP Mr Nkomo, just a pity you couldnt see the Trees for the forest at the time. Zanla forces were absoluitly no match at all against the Rhodesian army (80% Blacks) and the Zipra forces.

I really appreciate this interview! I've been learning a lot about Zimbabwean history, mainly from fiction books by NoViolet Bulawayo and Novuyo Rosa Tschuma (especially the latter) who wrote about the genocide, and I'm glad to have found your interview! Some of your interviews are in Ndebele and I haven't been able to see the translation, so I particularly appreciate the interview in English. Thank you so much for your work!

The Shona and Ndebele relationship is a little like that of the English and the French. Both tribes have had so many wars, they are never really sure of the others loyalty. Both tribes will stick together against a common enemy but quickly quarrel when no one else is involved. The Gukurahundi was a bad bit of history that was probably inevitable. I still think it would have been better to split Zimbabwe in two. Matableleland will always struggle in a system where they are ruled by people that do not love them. It would be the same if England was ruled by the French. The French would never want England to flourish and vice versa. The Shona would hate Bulawayo to become the capital and be ruled by the Ndebele but are happy for the status quo of ruling over the Ndebele.

Officer, the truth is you were part and parcel of the brigade that committed massive killings in Matabeleland. You cannot exonerate yourself from what happened. You seem to have details of what happened, but surprisingly you tell us you were not at the front. You want to give the impression that you did not kill anyone. My honest response is that I do not believe you. You are telling us the whole truth. Why didn't you resign. If they could not allow you, surely you could abscond. I have had of many cases of soldiers who have done that. surprisingly you did not.I have also heard of cases where soldiers are deployed or transferred from one brigade to another. My sixth sense tells me that if they wanted to remove Ndebele soldiers from the brigade, they could have transferred them to other brigades where they would not be a threat.Right now you are a mature person who regrets what happened. Come out openly and tell us what you did and people will forgive you.

    1. Decimate zapu & zipra to give zanu total control so as to protect British interest in Zimbabwe
    2. Kill off the ANC & Umkhonto wesizwe strategy of using Zimbabwe as their strategic springboard to launch their attacks on apartheid South Africa.

I do not have much information on how Ndebeles were killed in the rural areas, but i am worried that Ndebele people avoid touching on the Endumbane uprisings where ex Zipra soldiers were killing Shonas in Bulawayo. I have my own uncle shot down because he was Shona. They had this saying in Ndebele (excuse my spellings i can't write in Ndebele), 'Amasvina lawa babe inyama yemikhonto yabo baba bethu - which meant that these Shonas were meat for our fathers' spears'. This was one of the causes for the fall out. You guys you are biased in your narrations, we want people who tell the truth.

My condolences. I think as Zimbabweans we need to work together to solve this problem of tribalism. To address all these massacres and to work on nation building and building the Zimbabwean identity. To fix the way we teach history and stop marginalising each other. If we aren't to address any of these problems we'll never have national unity or stability.

CIO and fifth brigade are very different. CIO are pretty much the states assassins whilst fifth brigade was on a much larger scale. It may be true that there were Shonas killed by fifth brigade but that was probably through association (live in matebeleland = Ndebele or ZAPU supporter) since afterall, they did operate mostly in rural areas. Tribal cleansing has no place in this country and the stuff which happened is against our culture. People are not killed unless in war. This was a huge affront to who we are as a people and I'm honestly disgusted. We must work to bring peace, to build unity and allow the dead to rest in peace. HAZVIITE!!!

Africans should start to have a mind shift. The point I like to make here is, the people who run for office they should choose to unite their people, first starting a culture of Ubuntu in word and action. If Africans are to survive it's important to have one voice for the benefit of all Africans. There is enough evidence that solving problems along the tribal identity was,is and will be wrong. In order to survive Africans should solve their problems along the lines of Ubuntu. The patriarchal systems had failed the world, especially Africans.Africa is being exploited while they are busy fighting each other. This has to stop.

The fact of the matter much like what the Selous Scouts did, they killed and massacred innocent, unarmed individuals just because they came from an opposition hotspot. It happened, as Zimbabweans we need to accept it happened so we can fix it and move on. It's important and deserves attention. Imagine if it had happened kumusha kwako. Waizobvunza here kuti what about mauto vakafira muhondo usingazivi kana kuhwisisa kuti chiyi chaitika nehama dzako. The Zambezia plateau has been subject to so much blood-shed and atrocities. Mzilikazi's Nguni systematically sought to annihilate the Rozvi of Great Zimbabwe as well as the Shona and other ethnic groups during the time of Mfecane. The Matabele impis showed no mercy under Mzilikazi or Lobengula. They routinely 'washed their iklwas' in blood. Eventually, after the Rhodesian Bush War, the 'boot was firmly in place on the other foot', and the Matabele felt the full wrath of Mugabe's 'Mfecane'. Africa is as ruthless a Continent as Europe. It's true the ndebeles will never talk about entumbane where Zipra forces massacred the (shonas) Zanla forces. They have natural hatred for the shonas. At one time I supported Highlanders football club which by then was comprised of the ndebeles and it's support base ndebele as well. I was warned not to support Highlanders because I'm a shona.

Mugabe wanted a one party state, so the well trained Nkomo's ZIPRA forces were a threat to his reign, so obviously all the Ndebele people supported him by ethnic default, so it was elimination and intimidation to suppress any uprising / coup deta by the ZIPRA & Ndebele forces then. Generally, before and after the war, the Shona and Ndebele naturally disliked and were cynical towards each other.

@@foxbat473 I think your account is more representative of what actually happened. Even Dabengwa agrees that there was this arms shipment through Tanzania, but in order to protect himself, he says it belonged to the ANC fighters whom they were helping - what else can he say when caught red handed. ANC never had a military base in Zimbabwe and any such base should have been authorised by the govt. So even if i was Mugabe at the time, there was every reason to suspect that Zapu was up to something. Dissidents would hide in the civilians but hit and run at night, that left no option for the 5th brigade, except to unfortunately torture the villagers. One guy who was in the operations told me that initially the 5th brigade went through many villages searching peacefully for dissidents and the answer they got was we never was any here. Later on gunfire was heard from the villages that they had searched and that is when the game plan changed, they realised that the dissidents were among the people, that is when they started going back and torturing people, and indeed there are cases where they were told where guys were hidden. Where torture is used it cant be good at all, its sad that honest women were at the receiving end if their husbands were suspected to be involved. The other worrying thing is that the number of deaths keeps growing. For many years this number based on CCJP report was estimated at 20 000, but recently the number has doubled to 40 000. This is because in recent years there has been a lot of talk about it with some throwing in the idea of compensating the affected families - and its no surprise the number suddenly short up to 40 000. But it may be necessary to actually identify all the mass graves and extrapolate these numbers. It doesn't make sense to just thump suck numbers as is now happening, Its not an easy task to bury a person, especially where people had to bury a number of people at once. what i see is reluctance from the Ndebeles of any wrong doing, they want us to believe that the army just went out killing Ndebeles, If that was the case, that army should just have lined on the boarder of Matland and move in killing people - but that is not the case, there were specisfic areas where the killings happened where the dissident activity was identified.

@@foxbat473 Just for the record, maybe you made a typo error there. currently the estimated population is 17m, Ndebeles make 20%, which is about 3.4million. But having said that, 20 000 is not an easy number to just bury, one would need excavators to bury such a number, in my view it is way overstated, but that is not to justify the events that took place.

+gamelihle mpofu don't pay attention to him. He's clearly a divisive character, I don't know if he's trying to serve ulterior motives or what but in essence he's gone through a lot of comments to go out of his way and insult any Ndebeles he sees, call people rats and say it's good that this happened and they should go to SA. It's sad our people have been allowed to get to this state, I think as a people we need to find new interesting ways to combat tribalism (as the government clearly has no intent to) so as to make it less likely for people with this mentality to come out like this. It's an incredibly sad display.
