Jesus Christ are you a wizard? That foam from the package is like the bird from the window from adventure time. Changed my sound completly. Its magical.
Followed these mods and I have to say you nailed it with the case foam being the most important, I dabbled with silicon sheets, denser foam sheets, and another sound dampening material on the bottom layer however the case foam clearly brought out the best tones. All the others were too clacky (if that is your thing) while I get the much better thock out of the case foam. Also, I ordered the prebuilt as it was the only way to get white in stock, and my case foam was different looking. I ended up using case foam from my first GMMK Pro build as it looked very similar to yours in the video. Thanks for the great vid
I just got this keyboard, and I am very impressed. For *only* $179 you get a solid aluminum keyboard that has a nice bit of weight to it, solidly good stabilizers stock (still recommend band-aid and relube), and flawless QMK support. I didn't go for the knob version because I wanted the extra key though. Putting a layer of packing foam was definitely a tight fit, and the pressure would have terrified me if I had chosen a plastic board (such as the V2).
@@MrChocEntrax That's true, though EC11 Rotary Encoders are about $1 so soldering one in later and flashing with the knob firmware is always an option.
Hey I also have a Keychron Q2 and I have experienced the PCB issue where some keys would not actuate. I also used PE foam for my build. I found that removing the plate foam eliminated the issue, but I still got in contact with Keychron to send me a new PCB(which was a pain btw not happy with the customer service) but when i got the new pcb, funnily enough, it had the same issue with the original PCB, just a different key that wouldn’t actuate. Would expect from a big manufacturer like Keychron that they would get quality control on point but it doesn’t seem to be the case. Anyway, sorry for rambling, great work on the video man!
That's really interesting! Thanks for this info man - I was curious as to how many other people this affected. Hope you managed to come to a solution in the end, even with the second PCB! Cheers for the kind words too!
Commenting 2 years from the future, the Q3 Pro also has this issue. Otherwise, I had a great time following along your build and implementing the same mods you used. Thanks for touching on the flaw and mentioning what worked for you! Helped save me some troubleshooting time
Got a Q2, and the packing foam does not come in 3 layers, but 2. Its far to fat to fit, so you need to buy something else as it's really hard to slice it down to the correct height.
@@husainyard2288 it's all personal preference so i'd say yeah? it's a great keyboard for getting into the hobby for sure. if you had time/money i'd wait for another qk65 or zoom65 though
Have you tried changing out the knob? I saw on Reddit you can use a guitar knob (make sure it fits), but I haven't tried it yet since I just ordered my Q2.
Question mate, are your alphas deeper on the left side? I can't figure it out, mine has a more muted and poppy sound on the right side of the board. I've done almost the same mod, except polyfill for the case. Thanks!
Would love to see your office videos and your pc setup now? :D Can you make a video for it. I'm a huge fan of you and wondering that how QK60 review is coming along? :D
Will do!! Might do an office tour vid at 5 or 10k depending on how soon those are haha. Video is going well! Currently working on another video which will come out end of this week but the Qk vid should be done end of next!
I'm having difficulty finding an all black backlit PBT keycap set for my Q2. I can't believe it's so difficult to find a regular black keycap set but any help would be greatly appreciated. Great video and I can't wait to starting modding mine.
tysm for this video. I was having that hotswap socket problem with another keyboard and I just stuffed it with foam so it would create that pressure. like you said, super janky but it works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Jesus Christ are you a wizard? That foam from the package is like the bird from the window from adventure time. Changed my sound completly. Its magical.
I've seen that when people do the forcebreak mod on the Q2 it really helps eliminate the hollow sound too.

I agree
I wouldn’t have guessed you were new to keyboards. Nice and chill vid!
Too kind mate! Thank you!

The knob is technically 3 keys though

I actually left the thin foam because I was told it works as a low pass filter making the soung thockier :)
Ooh! I’ll have to give it a try - tape modding seemed to do that for me but will have to see!
i only did tempest mod and it sounds almost like in the video! added 2 layers of pe foam at the bottom (the stock foam still in)
damn bro these videos are cleaaan, youre going places! :D
Wow too kind mate, really appreciate it!! Love your content been subbed for a while now 🙏🏾

Uh oh, hope mine doesn't have that issue. I ordered mine not that long ago.

bro, where you got that keycaps? looks clean!
The plastic sheet is actually to keep the keyboard from shorting
Oh I had no idea! Cheers for that
is every pe foam non-conductive?
Is the difference compare to QK65 significant?
Yeah they're two completely different keyboards. Sound profile out of the box are waaay different!
@@AvinashKunjamboo in Malaysia, I can get one barebone new with knob for about 109USD. Is it worth it?

No I haven't! Let me know how you go if you're gonna do it!
smoooooooooth
Hey mate, how thick was the PE foam that you used? I can easily buy 1mm PE foam where I live but I'm worried it might be too thick
Yo! I think it was just under 1mm? probably 0.5 - if you grab it from a keyboard vendor though I'm sure it'll work

Hey mate, not from my experience no - could it be the tightening of the screws maybe? Or the polyfil not evenly distributed? Let me know!

@@AvinashKunjamboo hey thanks for looking!
Does the PE prohibit the rgb from showing through the caps?
nope, it actually helps diffuse it a bit nicer
hey thanks this helped alot. on what the best mods are to do and how to do it
keep up the goodwork
Cheers mate!
Sweet vid…im gonna try the foaming mod on my k4…if im happy with that ill try it on my q2
how did you cut the foam to make it thinner ? that's a god skill lol
Pretty easy with a retractable olfa knife
Hm, you could probably have done a force break mod + tape and had the same result.
Only the space bar sounds thocky
