Do you prefer 2nd gen over first gen for pilot?
Bought a 2012 Pilot a couple years ago with 107k miles on it. I am in love with this vehicle. Best one I've ever owned. Huge and roomy, just enough tech inside, good in the snow, reliable, and great on gas for the size. I have no point to this post, and I know it makes me sound like a fanboy. Hahaha but I don't care. I love it. Get one if you can.
Considering a 2010 pilot or 06/08 Tahoe. Need space as I’m moving to a different state. Which should I go with?
Im about to buy a 2011 Honda Pilot with low miles. Im getting it for the reliability and the 4wd. One thing I want to get checked out is the rubber timing belt.

I’m a Honda tech there’s no transmission problem on those Honda pilot they known for swaybar links, lower control arm and that’s about it
Sometimes the tb tensioners can leak on those 09-15 pilots , even on oem tensioners I hear.
Ohh also known for engine and catalytic converter failures😂
@@ismailkhan9698 Nah never engine failures , though some did have cam wear issues but they can run a long time sounding like ish. Cat converter issues probably attributed to the crap VCM system
I have a 2006 Honda Pilot ex-L fwd and the check engine light is on so I scan it and it says all my cylinders are misfiring but I changed all my ignition coils and spark plugs and it’s still on and still saying it misfiring. Also the car runs really good but the light is still on

I have a 2004 Honda Pilot I bought in 2022 currently hitting 260,000 miles. I love it. Easy to work on and giving my baby a second life. Just did the entire front end last year along with all the engine seals, water pump, and timing belt. this year working on upgrading my battery cables and connectors along with radio, subwoofer upgrade, and new amp. Currently getting new tires on it, and upgrading all my factory interior lights from halogen to LEDs along with the dashboard. Before I do the full radio upgrade, I’m gonna tearout the interior and install sound deadening material and possibly some new upholstery (we’ll see where the budget will be). Long story short, I love my baby.

I had a Honda Pilot. I pulled a big Grady White boat and never had a problem. The thing was all wheel drive and was a mule pulling the boat out of the ramp and backing it up on the grass. As for the brakes, my 10 year old son changed the brakes all by himself.
The problem is transmission jutter, this is coming from a Honda master tech. When the problem first starting showing up we were putting in rebuilt units from Honda, but as the engineers started looking at the problem they came up with simply changing the fluid helped with the jutter and only replace if drain and filling the transmission 3 time s in a row, driving the vehicle between changes to help break down the varnish on the clutch packs. Built proof vehicles can’t go wrong with a Honda or Toyota that’s for sure!!
Yup! The dealer and many mechanics immediately want to replace the trans. I took the advice from an article I read online about replacing the fluid 3X before making any decisions about replacing the trans. That turned out to be the fix. A hell of a lot cheaper than a new or rebuilt trans. I now do a single trans fluid change once a year (every other oil change) and have not had a problem since. BTW use only Honda Trans Fluid!
My 2009 pilot 355,000km has had no engine or transmission problems. Good info on rubber timing belt.
3 years back bought a 2011 Pilot from the Honda agency here , a pre-owned car well maintained , we are falling in love with this car year after year , not fancy from the inside , no fancy screens , it’s comfortable, when you need to speed up on a slope it gives you all the power you Desiree .. thanks god I made this deal
My 2012 Pilot 176k miles runs like a dream , changed an alternator and regular maintenance. Best thing on the road.
I have an 06 purchased end of 05, 128,000 miles oil & filter change every 4,000 miles. I did change timing belt & water pump, $202 dollars, dealer wanted almost 1700 and a trusted mechanic wanted 1200 so I did it myself as Scotty suggested other than that just tires, brake pads & battery. Runs great & everything works just as it did new when I purchased it.
I have an 05. Was quoted 1800 and low as 1000. I'm currently at 102,500 mi. Had the timing belt done at 60,000. The owners manual suggests another timing belt replacement at 105,000, however I've been told they can last up 60,000 meaning 120,000 mi would be the next suggested replacement. Any thoughts? Did you replace yours at 60,000 mi and then again at 128,000 mi ? Any input helps. Thank u
@@tommym8918 i had an 05, replaced the timing belt at 122k. The power steering rack was replaced under warranty at 64k, under the 12 month, 12k warranty when we bought it used from a Honda dealer. The a/c relay went bad which i replaced. The o- ring on the power steering pump went bad and i replaced that myself as well. Spent under $50 on repairs by the time we traded it in with 226k on it, and i had not done the timing belt again. The sliding power door sensors were going bad and we decided to get rid of it. If you replaced the timing belt at 60k, you are good until 120k.
What about the tranny fluid

@@tommym8918 Honda recommend interval is 105k or 7 years whichever comes first. Just had the tb done on the ody due to reaching the 7 year mark only had about 60k miles on the belt. Belt still looked pretty good along with everything else ( last tb was done with oem parts). I hear some people having tensioners start leaking though mine wasn't.
$10 grand for a new transmission is absurd, I've heard dealers quoted just that, on a 2nd generation Ridgeline thought to be out of warranty. Turned out the owner had an extended warranty the dealer did not know about.

They have been selling lightly used Japanese origin guaranteed transmissions since the 80s through a couple companies. I used to see these imports nightly by the truckload when I was a CBP Officer. They work well and are all extremely low miles

I actually still have my 2009 Honda pilot. Original purchase. I've changed out the transmission fluid every 20k of miles. Currently 145k miles. No problems. I use it for work mostly but been good to me. Paint job sucks! I know one day soon I'll either sell it while it still runs good or keep it out in the country and beat it up till it dies.
We have a 2014 honda pilot touring. It's a great car we have owned it for 2-3 years had the timing belt redone. Runs like a champ I believe it has 130k on her. Never towed anything with it but does have the hitch incase we need it.
I just had to get rid of my ‘07 Pilot 4WD this weekend. It came from NY and I bought it in FL when it had 80k miles. I got it to 147k miles before the power steeerinf pump was leeking, v tech solinoid was leaking oil, oil pan started leaking oil… just too much to put in for what the car was worth $2k and also would need to change again the timing belt (which was replaced 4 years ago). Other than that, it was pretty solid (except for the P0420 code always coming up)

I bought a Honda Horizon 4x4 SUV.. comes compact with lotus European design/features, is a Izuzu v6 petrol and is such an amazing vehicle.. it's coming close to 30 years old, but still looks modern. Honda has really made some exceptional vehicles.
I have a 09 Pilot and purchased at 160,000. It has now reached 307,000 miles and had only one major issue which was one of the gaskets leaking oil on top of alternator. But other than that just normal maintenance. I so far haven’t had any transmission issues.

I have got a 2006 Honda Pilot. It has 255k miles on the dash, and it’s transmission is going great! I’ve done 4 0-60s on it i just did one yesterday it is a little tired but it runs well for its age!!

If you are buying this used look into TWO things
1. A vcm disbaler which will shut off the eco mode b.s (S-VCM) $100
2. Change the Trans fluid to Valvoline Mac life a a couple times.(Fixes those hard shifts)
Bonus #3. Upgrade front rotors

I LOVE my 2006 Honda Pilot. 150,000 miles and gets pretty good gas mileage for such a big car. I’d like to downsize to a CR-v as parking spaces are pretty small at my condo. I can’t bring myself to do it while the Pilot is running so well.
Same here 2006 Pilot ,186,000 miles, Love it,,, had the transmission rebuilt everything is going good will not give up in this truck,!! Seats 7/8 ..for the family 👍👍👍👍

I have a 2012 honda pilot model and was doing the same thing. I changed the transmission fluid and problem solved 👌
Just came here to say the same thing. I also got a S-VCM love the way it drives now.
Before you condemn the transmission itself I would recommend that you first check the transmission fluid level and make sure it's not too low or too high. Pilot and Odyssey transmissions can be very temperamental when it comes to that. Also make sure you only use the OEM transmission fluid from the dealership. Second I would recommend checking the transmission mount as well. If either one of these are compromised it could begin a habit of hard and/or delayed shifting. Just my .02.
I got a 13 pilot with 158k took it on a lot of road trips still running strong
I have a 2008 CRV. Same tranny symptoms; hard shifts in the morning 1-2, 2-1 shift is brutal. Reset the TCM, shifts a lot better but the engine has to be warm. Also found that if I time it right, disabling VSA as it shifts from 2nd to 1st will smooth out all shifts when cold
I have the last of this generation. 2015 model. Touring trim. Changed the timing belt, transmission fluid and VTM-4 fluid at 60k miles. I don’t take any chances. Runs like new. I love this car.
I also have the 2015 model. Was the timing belt difficult to replace? We bought ours used and wan't able to find out if ours had it replaced.
@@josuemontalvo221 Most likely it hasn't been replaced. Took this to Honda for the replacement. I suggest you do the same if you are not technically inclined.
I thought I was starting to have issues with my 2004 Pilot at about 170,000 with a transmission shudder at about 30 mph and about 70 mph. I did a trans fluid change X3 and the shudder completely cleared up. 191,000 and still going strong.
Had one in blue got 264k out of it

I installed the vcm tuner 2 and it completely solved my problem no more shudder and using all cylinders all the time no more eco mode for me causes too many problems for me, I have a 2010 and runs like new.
I have a 2008 Pilot SE, have had for few years. Over 220,000 miles. Runs strong but put about $1,000 into the brake system total & couple other minor things. Looking to get a newer one & keep the old one.
Love Hondas and own a 2021 pilot such a beast and 29 mpg, but I just bought a 2010 Nissan Xterra X with 200k miles and it shifts like brand new. Tranny, engine all shift like brand new.
I just got one at auction EX version for 9800 with only 30k miles feels pretty strong pretty solid suv😊
I just bought one of these for my winter beater. My tranny was shifting a little weird, It felt like it was going in and out of overdrive. Anyway I brought it into the Honda dealer and had the tranny fluid changed. Long story short it is 90% smoother. I would highly recommend this as the first course of action if your tranny isn't shifting as smooth as it should.

Have a 12’ Honda Pilot with the same issue from first to second -second to third. Only does it when it’s cold outside -gets better as it warms up. I’ve took it to two different shops and told me that it shifted fine for a 10 year old Honda. Only at 77,000 miles, so I’m just gonna baby it
mines at 150 k miles and runs still runs great (2012) wishing you the same luck🙌
Try some Lubegard red, sometimes it can fix sloppy shifting and it oesnt have seal swellers soitwont do any damage
Scotty, there isn't a lot of guys like you left in this world! They all seem to have outrageous quotes even if its just basic brake jobs! I was quoted around $1500-1800 dollars for front brake work on a 2008 Toyota Sequoia!

Touring Recording Artist purchased a 2012 with 29000 now 250+ thou and it’s running like a charm with regular intervals of maintenance. Always reliable in any weather. Don’t be scared of high miles if the owner has the paperwork to back up the maintenance. My third Honda two prior CRVs. No major repairs over $1250 perfect for touring the USA with a full 4piece band.

I have a 2003 Honda Pilot and it has 371 000 miles, and the transmission is still functioning. It does make noise but it hasn’t failed me yet
I got a 2011 Honda Pilot with 180k miles on it and its been through 3 kids it has a bunch of dents but its ran pretty well with little mantaince, it is only a town car that we bring to the beach or once in a blue moon on vacation. Great car!

Upgraded from a 2007 CR-V LX base model to a fully loaded 2011 Pilot Touring 4WD. The difference in size and drive feel is worlds apart. The pilot feels like luxury in comparison. I think I got a good price on it after checking maintenance records - 1 prior owner who kept it well maintained. Timing belt and water pump changed at 97,000. Other recommended maintenance all done as well, except transmission flush. I got that done after I bought the Pilot. She's good as new to me and I hope to keep her for many many years. I wanted a 2012 for the updated grill and bumper styling but dealers kept marking up that year for thousands more and I decided I didn't really NEED the 2012.
You can replace the grill with one from a newer model, or pick up one of the aftermarket ones to jazz up the appearance. There's a bunch out there. Same thing with the headlights (upgrade to blacked out headlights with LED "bulbs").

I bought a 2005 Honda Pilot .
It had a slight vibration at about 35 - 40mph .
I noticed if I drove it in " 3rd Gear "
when I wasnt going to go on the highway , that it didnt do it .
Id only use the regular " OD " position when at higher speeds .
I sold it pretty cheap and told the new owner about it .
He mostly drove around town so he didnt care .
Lots of V6 Hondas/ Acuras with automatic trans , back in the early 2000's , had trans issues.
I had an 05 Acura TL with the automatic , that was starting to act weird , too.
My '06 TL Acura killed 2 transmissions in the 100k km while with me( appr 60k miles) . But gotta give credit, that engine would probably tear any automatic in pieces, so strong
@@sarudi51980 Yeah , I sold my 05 tl w that automatic and found another 05 with the 6 speed manual , with factory limited slip and Brembo front brakes .
It's all I need .
Had a similar issue that a trans-flush completely cleared up.

I have the 2015 SE. The thing runs like a dream. My friend bought a 2020 Pilot with 9 speed AT and he is very unhappy with it.
I love scoty he don't fix anything anymore he is done with fixing ...I might open garage and say yah is very old just live with it and save ur money 💰

Mine is a 2007 EXL 4WD it’s currently at 151k miles the original radiator had a minor leak due to rust. So it was replaced I live in rust belt. I do my own maintenance thanks to people like your sir!
I replaced the rear coil springs & shock absorbers , door blend actuator, tpms sensors during tire replacement, brake pads and rotors, removed rust from underneath and applied a rust protection coat, for the timing belt job I used Honda OEM parts.
I take good care of the fluids and use full synthetics on the engine, transfer case and transmission only the rear differential VTM-4 system fluid is not synthetic because no one makes it. I follow your recommendations 100% things like fuel additives to clean the fuel system,EGR valve and mass air sensor cleaning, AT205 spray on rubber suspension parts, Lucas additives for both engine and transmission as a preventive measure.
I get about 23 mpg on the highway and 14 to 15 on the city. My pilot runs smooth, no oil leaks, oil burning is not a problem no VCM and no codes.

@@shadowman1992 Yes, I remember at least 2 of them were quite tight on the exhaust side, the rest was within tolerance.
@alexandercuello3168 see I'm kinda in a delima here. I have been asking tons of honda v6 owners with high mileage engines if they ever have gotten a valve adjustment and more often than not they say no they never have and most of the people have 230k or more on their engines. I own a 2007 ridgeline and I bought it used it runs perfectly and it's not loud with 155k on it idk if I should get one or not it's very expensive
Scotty, I have owned 4 Hondas, 2 new, and 2 preowned. 1988 Accord, 1998 Odyssey, 2001 Odyssey, 2002 Accord EX. Great vehicles for the most part. My biggest complaint with Honda, road noise. That kept us from buying another one..
Well if you don't like copious amounts of loud music I could see that being an issue. My 95 Del Sol sounds like you're driving an enclosed shopping cart.
Definitely! My only real complaint is the road noise. Especially after I put Light-Truck tires on it. Can't beat the reliability I've had though.
OMG, this was a walk down nostalgia lane. I had a 2006, which was the body style before this one. But I remember all that stuff --- the fold-down TV screen, the backup camera in the rear-view mirror. It was a solid car and great for hauling the kids around. Eventually replaced it with a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder. By that time, the highest trim on the Pilot just didn't compare with the Nissan Platinum trim. You'd have to go Acura to get more luxury, but the MDX is completely different (and more expensive).
Those Pathfinder s were a disgrace though looked like a rental and strapped with the crappy CVT. NEW 2023 PATHFINDER looks good though
@@rudycastellon6360 2023 goes back to conventional automatic so it might be reliable, the 2005-2012 are ok as long as you change the radiator as it will grenade the transmission 2013-2020 are total garbage CVT transmission rental cars
Currently driving 06 Odyssey 320 000 miles, 06 Acura mdx 225 000 miles, Original Transmission in both, Odyssey shifting just fine and my MDX shifting slow from first to second gear until warms up,Changing tranny fluid 20-30 K ,15 minutes job,$40 fluid,No problem yet

This generation of Honda Pilot is my favorite in terms of design. The newest generation is sort of designed like a lot of modern SUVs and just don't stand out as more unique.
Bought an ‘11 Pilot earlier this year with 170K miles. Put on the S-VCM to shut off that annoying VCM system and it not only improved the driving experience but it quit burning oil. Also had a slight shudder at low throttle 20-30 mph that was fixed with Lucas fuel injector cleaner. Now it drives like new!
How much did you end up paying?

@Walter White yes sir i have! I enjoyed it too man! If they had brought some better map selection and the bo2 pick 10 it would have been a great game in my eyes, but the mechanics were fantastic either way so it has it’s novelty for me still for sure. I just miss MW3 and want a full and faithful remake so bad :(

Your opinion on KROWN undercoating ? That’s what I apply to my 2020 Tacoma, living in NE Ohio and pulling my snowmobiles in the winter…
Yeah do what MC said plus Id wash it with a handheld wand at least once a week underneath .
I also lift the hood and wash the inner fenders , brake lines and radiator and lower radiator supports .
Also under the hood itself .

Two days ago on October 7th, 2022, I just bought a black 2010 Honda Pilot that looks exactly like the one in this video, and I loving it so far. It has 129,000 mi, and I am in the process of getting routine maintenance out of the way.
Prior to my purchase, I researched the years not to buy, and online documentation said to avoid 2009, 2011, and 2013. Thus, I restricted my possible vehicles to 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2015. Honda Pilots newer than 2015 were pretty much out of my desired price range, plus the 2016 and 2017 are well known to have transmission problems.
I didn't want to go older than 2010, but for 2010 through 2015, I noticed that most of the vehicles for sale were from 2011 and 2013, so I definitely believe the online documentation. The other years were more scarce and more expensive, but as I was in the market for an older vehicle, it made absolutely no sense to not follow the information already known and shared by previous vehicle owners over the years.
That pilot still has the eco mode, so could be you are feeling the cylinders turning on and off. I have the 2011 pilot and also check the motor mounts, had one that was broken and made the engine shimmy when I gunned it
I have an 06 Ridgeline with 78k miles on her and I do a drain and fill of transmission oil once a year no matter the mileage I drive.$40 good piece of mind!
Just did the yearly drain/fill on my ody also put in 5oz of Lubegard Red

I have honda pilot 2010 Exl it's mentioned on owner manual but on body it's says 10/2009,
Is same as 2009 or 2010,and it has 100,000 mils on.

We love our 2009 and have it for years. Our son is driving it at college now. He is a senior and I am supposedly working on his truck while he drives pilot, His truck has no ac and is always giving us grief, we told just ake the pilot and i will fix his truck. He graduates in Dec and its going with him

Pilot is so much nicer than a Highlander just tested a se plus h/l 2013 and a base ex pilot. Pilot all day only reason I'd say Highlander is well toyota very reliable

I've owned a couple of these vehicles, very reliable. My biggest complaint is the tpms is extremely sensitive so it triggers evertime the temperature swings 25 degrees, the interference engine/timing (I hate them) and the "3rd row" seating is very low on space and cheap. You're not putting teenagers back there comfortably, let alone adults. My wife loves her pilot more than any vehicle she's had, but she's thinking of trading it in for a van or suv with better seats for our growing kids.
I’d recommend “flushing” aka drain and fill the transmission fluid… it fixes most of the “judder” issues… there’s a service bulletin for this issue, if it is what I’m thinking… 👌
My wife drives a 22' Pilot and it might not be as reliable the old ones but it's better than the Buick Enclave that she wanted lol
i had a 2009 honda ridgeline and it had 315 000 km and the transmission did do the same thing... but it had been doing it for a long time and it wasnt too bad so we didnt bother fixing it.

I have the same pilot. However mine got 300k miles. I did nothing more than oil change. However mine burns oil but I couldn’t expect less for a 300k miles

Hondas you have to get the transmission change oil 🛢 chane every 15 to 30 thousands miles the have a high resolution transmission the oil breaks down fast keep it change. It works all I drive are honds.

I have a 2005 Honda pilot no codes it's been having problems starting value covers was leaking so I changed them and changed the knock sensor and the camshaft p sensor and cleared the throttle body and intake and all up really good but it's still doing the same thing it has new plugs in it and it's not the neutral safety switch I put it in neutral and tried starting it and it still does the same thing when trying to start it up just cracks and when it does start it spits and spudders and then stalls out. 🤦Any ideals?
One more thing, $50 for a timing belt? I bought the whole kit including a water pump and changed it myself, my cost was around $300-400. I found a bad motor mount. I had a friend that went to the dealer and paid $1300 for a timing belt replacement.

This might be the best generation Pilot, as far as the looks, because it has more truck like body-lines. The current Pilot looks too much like a mini-van.

The 2023 looks a lot better than the previous generation. Considering getting the new one or maybe wait until the new Passport comes out. It's hard to let go of my 2004. I keep expecting some major failure to use as an excuse to get a new one but it just keeps on going.

Sometimes minor shudders in these can be remedied with a fluid change , no flushing though just drain and fill 3x. Some tell me if fluid replacement doesn't do the trick sometimes delays in shifting can be remedied by replacing the 1-2 ,2-3 pressure switches
Just had my fluid changed under warranty in my 2016 Pilot that was having a judder around 35-45mph.
